FROM THE EDITOR Summer break is almost over, and our kids will be returning to school soon. With the heat index high and the pressure of your “to do” list even higher, we’ve decided to focus on simplicity this month in The Grand Season Family. I have personally been challenged by this month’s theme, and Hans Hofmann’s quote resonates with me: The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary, so that the necessary may speak. As I shift from the mode of crossing off the summer fun list, and transition to preparing for school, I admit it’s easy to lose sight of the things that truly need my attention. Right now, my sons need my attention more than ever as they seek insights about their futures, and are looking for answers on how I can support them as they move closer toward independence.

START WITH WHY Think about what drives you Do you want to live a simpler life? What do you crave about it? Why are you interested in creating a slower life? The best way to make progress when you desire to change your habits is to know the answers before you start. If you’re truly motivated to make lasting change, grab a notebook and start brainstorming. Write down your goals What do you want from this change? Where do you feel the greatest need to slow down and simplify? What do you stand to gain? Write down your strengths Think about what you are good at. Write down your weaknesses What challenges will you face? What circumstances will make change harder for you? Evaluate your answers Make sure you’re changing for the right reasons. You need to understand that your journey won’t look like anyone else’s. Go for it Committing goals to paper helps you achieve them. Keep your notes in a convenient place so when you face challenges you can remind yourself of your WHY. After you’ve established your why, you need to accept your current circumstances, limitations, strengths and weaknesses. If you don’t start out from a place of acceptance, then the work you’ve put in to creating a simpler, slower life will be overshadowed by feelings of inadequacy, guilt and comparison. Remember, simplifying your life is not a sprint—it’s a marathon.

n Spend time alone. Alone time is good for you. It could take practice getting used to the quiet, and making room for your inner voice.
n Evaluate your commitments. Look at everything you’ve got going on in your life. Think about which of these really give you value.

n Evaluate your time. How do you spend your day? Make a list, and evaluate if the time you spend on tasks is in line with your priorities. n Learn to say “No.”
n Limit your communications. Only do email at certain times of the day for a certain number of minutes. Limit phone calls to certain times of the day for specific durations of time. n Limit media consumption.

n Simplify your wardrobe. Is your closet bursting? Simplify your wardrobe by getting rid of anything you don’t wear. n Create a simplicity statement. What do you want your simple life to look like? Write it out. n Free up time.
n Do what you love. Once you’ve freed up some time, be sure to spend that extra time doing things you love.

n Simplify your budget. Many people skip budgeting because it’s too hard or too complicated. n Read the book Simplify Your
Life by Elaine St. James.
n Fill your day with simple pleasures. Make a list of your favorite simple pleasures, and sprinkle them throughout your day. n Learn to pack light.
n Leave space in your day. Leave a little space between things you need to do, so you will have room for contingencies, and you’ll go through your day much more relaxed. n Always ask: Will this simplify my life? If the answer is no, reconsider.

Keep your kids fresh for school
It’s only natural that kids get excited for summer vacation. Parents may be concerned about summer “brain drain,” which occurs when students lose the knowledge they gained during the school year.
Unfortunately, many children show learning losses when they return to school in the fall. According to RAND research, these summer setbacks are cumulative, resulting in increasing levels of learning loss over time. “Parents can keep minds sharp by creating fun summer learning opportunities at home,” says Dr. Clement Chau. To help families avoid summer setbacks, Chau suggests the following ideas:
Visit the library
Many libraries offer summer reading challenges, which can prove to be great motivation to crack open a book. Enlist the expertise of librarians to help children find titles they’ll enjoy.
Learn about a new topic
Has your child been collecting rocks when playing outdoors? Does he or she like to point out different shapes of clouds in the sky? Encourage children to research and learn more about the subjects that fascinate them. If they are passionate about a topic, they’ll be more likely to seek out more information.
Set aside required reading time
On average, children who read more than 20 minutes a day scored above the 90th percentile on standardized reading tests, and reading just six books during the summer can keep your child’s reading ability stable.
Use teachable moments
Going to a baseball game? Show your child how to calculate a batting average or a pitcher’s ERA. Making dinner? Let your child measure the ingredients. Clipping coupons? Show your child how much money will be saved in your grocery budget. Going on a road trip? Look up some fun facts about the different states you’ll see on license plates.

Summer can be hot, sticky and downright uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous if you are not prepared. Cope with the heat this summer and stay healthy and safe with these helpful tips.
Maintain your air conditioner The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely.
Dress appropriately During the summer, lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make all the difference to your comfort. The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the cooler you will be.
Always wear sunscreen Avoid sunburns by always wearing sunscreen. While there are varying opinions on the ideal strength to use, it’s important to make sure everyone has it on when they’re at the pool, taking a walk, gardening or playing outside.
Schedule activities carefully During periods of intense heat, stay indoors and remain in an air-conditioned location (if possible). Limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when it’s cooler.
Stay hydrated Summer fun often means being outdoors, but listen to your body and take breaks to rest, rehydrate and cool off. First, it implies that you’re a month ahead of your bills. Second, it solves the problem of budgeting for irregular income. Use cash Try adopting cash for your discretionary spending. The key to cash is to make the process as intimate as possible. Fund an emergency fund This is most important for peace of mind, having a savings account for the unexpected event will reduce stess. Outsource tasks The truth is that learning the skills to be self-sufficient takes time and practice. Some people are better off focusing their attention on tasks that offer more value. Get rid of two items for every one you buy Once you’ve simplified your consumption habits, it’s important to take measures to maintain them. Make Your Marriage Last Remember the “golden rule”
The fundamental rules for human interaction—kindness, fairness and respect—are taught to us as young children. Unfortunately, many of these lessons are forgotten (or unlearned) by the time we reach adulthood. Treating others the way we’d like to be treated seems simple enough … until we have to do it every day. But what makes the “Golden Rule” golden is it’s simple genius. Relationships aren’t rocket science, but they do call for the same level of patience and dedication. Since most of us haven’t visited a grade school in years, here’s a quick refresher on how to treat your spouse in a way that helps your marriage go the distance.
1. Be kind (not nice) Most of the lessons our kindergarten teachers drill into us as children are also useful in our adult relationships. But niceness is one rule that can actually backfire in a romantic relationship. Some partners can (however wrongly) interpret niceness as weakness. Moreover, niceness is often insincere—it is a coping mechanism taught to us as children to help us deal with people we don’t really like. True kindness, by contrast, doesn’t condescend or pretend. Kindness looks to the core worth of another person and responds accordingly. Kindness doesn’t mean avoiding conflict or even always “playing nice”—it just means processing through issues with a sincere respect for your spouse’s feelings and humanity. 2. Be sexually generous Marriage is not an excuse to be a sexual slacker. When you put your spouse’s sexual needs first, your own are likely to be satisfied as well. If for some reason your needs continue to be unmet, don’t just seethe about it—
communicate with your spouse. Affirm your love for him or her while helping them understand what makes you feel loved. 3. Be there Your presence, both physical and emotional, is critical to the survival of your relationship. Try to be present in the moment and to be sensitive to your spouse’s emotional state. Really listen when your spouse speaks. If your job or other obligations routinely keep you away from your spouse, take a hard look at your options and determine what is best for the overall health of your marriage. 4. Be grateful Before you rush to judge, take a step back and remember what you have in your partner. Is he or she loyal, considerate or kind? What flaws of yours does your spouse patiently endure? 5. Be helpful You shouldn’t be helpful just for the sake of getting what you want. But you’d be surprised at how often helping your partner out—especially when he or she is stressed—can yield the kind of response you crave most. If you feel shortchanged on affection, communication or time, try being more helpful. It’s not a magic formula guaranteed to bring results, but it can help improve your spouse’s mood, and by extension, your relationship. 6. Don’t over-romanticize Drop your delusions of story book love, and see how much room it frees up for real love.

7. Don’t over-dramatize Some people thrive on drama. If you are one of those people, you are bound to be disappointed by any healthy relationship. Where no drama exists, drama-addicts will find ways to provoke or manufacture it.

8. Don’t nag or nitpick You may think your “constructive” criticism or helpful reminders will help mold your spouse into your idealized man or woman. More likely, it will just wear them out. You may or may not get what you want … and you are likely to something you didn’t want: resentment. 9. Don’t lose focus We live in a hyper-saturated, hyperstimulated world. Beauty is distorted, augmented and airbrushed. Willing
sexual partners are around every dance club corner. Pornography is ubiquitous. Destructive behaviors are exaggerated (and glamorized) by “reality” shows. It seems like everyone is misbehaving and if you aren’t, you must be missing out. But the desire for meaningful relationships is at the core of the human heart. You can try to take the shortcut to this kind of happiness by responding to every enticement that comes your way. Or you can choose to focus on a real relationship, and enjoy the enduring pleasures such a relationship provides.
10. Don’t be selfish It sounds simple enough. But selfishness underlies most of our broken relationships—and it is a hard habit to break. Selfishness can take many forms: financial, behavioral, emotional or sexual. We all fall victim to selfishness from time to time, but chronic selfishness can do lasting damage to a relationship. Selfishness presents itself as a way to secure your own happiness, but most of the time, it actually erodes it.

FRESH FUN Make dessert with your kids
WATERMELON AND BERRY PIZZA
(Serves 6)
Ingredients
Have your kids help you prepare this guilt-free, ridiculously simple and naturally sweet “pizza style” version of everyone’s favorite locally grown foods—tasty watermelon and lots of berries. There are a few things in common with the pizza idea ... well, actually only two. The dessert presentation is round, and it has lots of tempting healthy, fresh toppings.
12 Raspberries or strawberries halved 6 mint leaves chopped 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 1 large watermelon slice (1 inch or more thick), 10 inches in diameter 6 ounces natural lemon-flavored yogurt (or 3 ounces creme fraiche) 1/2 cup blueberries Directions
1. In a small bowl, drizzle balsamic vinegar over the strawberries, and stir. Set aside. 2. Let your junior chef wash and dry the whole watermelon. An adult should slice a 10-inch round at the center portion and set on a serving plate. (If your watermelon is smaller or larger, cut the widest portion for this dessert and adjust quantities.) 3. Evenly cut the slice into sixths. Push the cut triangles tightly together on the plate. 4. Ask your child to spread the yogurt or creme fraiche over the round. 5. Spoon the strawberries and blueberries over the yogurt. Serve slices on a dessert plate. Alternative Ideas
Plus, there’s the wow factor when your kids proudly carry their work of culinary creativity to the table at an informal supper with your family and friends. They’ll be so proud.
