Get to know the new look for prescription bottles
Don’t be surprised if your next prescription bottle looks different, especially if you pick up your drugs at CVS. The newest thing is to put lots of information on the label, in big letters on a big label. CVS is calling it ScriptPath. If you take multiple drugs and haven’t been given instructions about what can go with what, ask. Don’t count on the fancy new label to let you know. Tell the pharmacist all the drugs you’re taking and when, and ask when your new drug should be fit into the schedule. Don’t just take them all at once in the morning. There’s one drug, for example, that can’t be taken within an hour of food. Another one works better late at night. You need accurate information. Check the side of the bottle where the label says morning, midday, evening and bedtime, and see which one is marked. Ask, especially, if your doctor or pharmacist has told you one thing and the pill bottle indicates something else. One change you’ll likely see is the size of the bottle itself. Even if you’re only getting a month’s supply of small pills, the label needs to go around the bottle. Your best bet, especially if you have a new prescription, is to not leave the counter until you have a chance to read the label and ask questions.

Ryan Reynolds didn’t fare well with “Life” (2017) co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal, but he has struck gold by co-writing, producing and starring as “Deadpool” (2017), which grossed $731 million, and its sequel, “Deadpool 2,” which is approaching the $500 million mark. Next up is his production of “The Little Stranger” with Domhnall Gleason and Will Poulter, for an Aug. 31 release. That’s followed by the Netflix film “Six Underground,” with director Michael Bay and written by his “Deadpool” co-writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Get pumped about your partner’s accomplishments. While it’s important to be there when hard things happen, it’s also important to celebrate with them when things are going great. Keep yourself safe by being smart about getting out
Summer is here, and the 100 degree mark isn’t going to go away anytime soon. It’s the time of year for seniors to beware of the heat and make plans to avoid dangerous overexposure. Here are some tips: • Consider sun-blocking drapes for windows on the south and west side of the house. Keep them closed during the heat of the day. • Join afternoon activities at the recreation center. That way you’ll be in air conditioning when the heat is at its worst. If you can get to the mall, go there. Sit in the food court and read a book, or walk some laps for exercise.
• Call your doctor’s office and ask about your water intake. Be sure to tell them all of your medications; some drugs can make it too easy to become dehydrated, especially if you take diuretics. Remember that sugary drinks don’t count as liquid intake. • Keep an eye on your neighbors if they’re out in the yard. If you go out, use a wide-brim woven hat. Check the weather and keep an eye on the heat index. Wear loose cotton clothing. Remember: It’s hard to know when you’re getting overheated. Heat exhaustion or heatstroke can creep up on us because our circulatory system doesn’t work like it used to. Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion: weakness, headaches, dizziness and muscle cramps. The more serious heatstroke can follow only 10-15 minutes later.

Rent out your space like a pro
Renting your entire house or even just one room, especially if there’s a big event coming to your town, can be a wonderful way to earn extra income, but it can also expose you to unexpected and potentially costly risks. Here are some helpful hints. Use a vacation rental site Posting an ad is free on some sites and eliminates some of the legwork involved. Some sites will verify users’ identities, provide guest and host reviews and let you set your own rental price. Check your insurance What if someone slips on a wet floor or falls down the stairs? Some sites offer insurance coverage for hosts and landlords, but others may require you to provide your own coverage to protect against these types of losses. You’ll probably need protection if you decide to rent on your
own. It’s important to talk with your insurance agent about how you’re using your home, the potential liability risks and to make sure you are adequately protected against property damage and injuries. Don’t forget the tax According to the IRS, if you plan on renting your space for fewer than 15 days a year, you don’t need to report the money earned as income. Many vacation rental sites, however, will automatically document the income to the IRS, meaning you could get a letter asking you to pay on unreported income. If you fall within that 14-day window, write a letter stating the income is not taxable and attach proof. Budget for extra costs While it’s tempting to think about additional income, make sure you understand the fee structure and costs. Most rental sites charge either an annual fee or a percentage of each booking to cover processing and listing. Depending on how much of your home you’re renting out, you may need to find another place to stay. Also consider the cost of supplies like linens and a cleaning service to tidy up in between guests.

Check out these tips for doing your laundry in a way that keeps clothes fresh and looking new as long as possible. Understand the basics Different stains require different cleaning agents, and unfortunately, there is no one single ingredient that cleans all kinds of stains well. For example, milk and grass stains require enzyme cleaners, while ink or wine stains require peroxides. Of course, clothes also need brighteners and detergents to come out looking their best. Understanding these basic principles can help you treat clothes more effectively. Pre-treat stains Stained clothing should be pre-treated with a tough, multi-faceted solution. Rub in pre-treatment gently and wait three to five minutes. Just be careful not to allow the solution to dry on the fabric. Some garments will need a longer pre-treatment. If so, add the solution to water and soak the soiled clothing in a bucket before washing as usual. Fight odor Select products that keep laundry fresh longer. From baseball cards and sports equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is? “The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old. 1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items. Here are some tips for determining value. Baseball Cards Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely pricey. Do they have sharp corners, no creases and retain original gloss? Do they depict star players and Hall of Famers? A Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner or Mickey Mantle will sell for more than non-stars. With particularly old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Unopened packs from almost any era can be valuable. Memorabilia & Equipment Look for old advertising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. This doesn’t mean ads torn from magazines, but those used as store displays and for other purposes. Tin signs are highly collectible from the 1900s into the 1960s, but low-quality reproductions aren’t. Pre-1950s catcher’s masks, baseball gloves and bats can be valuable, especially those endorsed by star players. Toys Look for famous characters, such as early Walt Disney items, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. The most prized toys are those in original condition with no broken pieces and paint intact. And if you have original boxes, you might strike gold! So, while you’re cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t rush to purge. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable! VETERANS POST After a 15-year scam, the owner/operator of a parking lot company was accused of defrauding the Department of Veterans Affairs of more than $13 million.

The owner had a contract to run the lots for the VA, and in return he was to hand over 60 percent of the gross revenue and submit annual reports, as well as document any improvements he’d made, which would reduce the amount he owed the VA. The parking lot owner had someone working with him on the inside of the VA contracting office. Their relationship went on for 11 years, with the owner handing over nearly $300,000 in bribes. The owner kept two sets of books, showing a phony set to the VA. He failed to report untold millions of dollars in cash but overcharged for repairs. He took $3.1 million in salary, $470,000 in travel expenses and $413,000 in meals and entertainment. He purchased condos, Ferraris, Corvettes, a racing boat, and was found to have $213,000 in change at his house. After a plea bargain, he is likely to get only 70 months behind bars!
