Keep yourself safe by being smart about getting out

Summer is here, and the 100 degree mark isn’t going to go away anytime soon. It’s the time of year for seniors to beware of the heat and make plans to avoid dangerous overexposure. Here are some tips: • Consider sun-blocking drapes for windows on the south and west side of the house. Keep them closed during the heat of the day. • Join afternoon activities at the recreation center. That way you’ll be in air conditioning when the heat is at its worst. If you can get to the mall, go there. Sit in the food court and read a book, or walk some laps for exercise.

• Plan your errands for early or late in the day. • Call your doctor’s office and ask about your water intake. Be sure to tell them all of your medications; some drugs can make it too easy to become dehydrated, especially if you take diuretics. Remember that sugary drinks don’t count as liquid intake. • Keep an eye on your neighbors if they’re out in the yard. If you go out, use a wide-brim woven hat. Check the weather and keep an eye on the heat index. Wear loose cotton clothing. Remember: It’s hard to know when you’re getting overheated. Heat exhaustion or heatstroke can creep up on us because our circulatory system doesn’t work like it used to. Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion: weakness, headaches, dizziness and muscle cramps. The more serious heatstroke can follow only 10-15 minutes later.

CUSTOM DRAPES VETERANS POST After a 15-year scam, the owner/operator of a parking lot company was accused of defrauding the Department of Veterans Affairs of more than $13 million. The owner had a contract to run the lots for the VA, and in return he was to hand over 60 percent of the gross revenue and submit annual reports, as well as document any improvements he’d made, which would reduce the amount he owed the VA. The parking lot owner had someone working with him on the inside of the VA contracting office. Their relationship went on for 11 years, with the owner handing over nearly $300,000 in bribes.

The town of Key Largo, Florida, did not exist before the 1948 film of that name starring Humphrey Bogart made it famous. Due to a series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812, the Mississippi River ran backward for a time. Becoming a sports star is the dream of many young people, so you might think that someone who is signed to a professional baseball contract has it made. You’d be wrong, however. It turns out that only 1 out of every 10 athletes who sign such a contract ever becomes a major-league ballplayer.
