There are two things that active adults have in spades these days: time and knowledge. And both make them the perfect match for volunteering. By giving back as little as two hours a week, or about 96 hours a year, older adults are discovering how to keep their lives active and healthy. Research shows that seniors who volunteer can combat depression, stave off chronic pain, and boost brain power. In short, volunteering can promote longevity. Still need another reason to get out there and volunteer? With the number of volunteers age 65 and older expected to double in a few years, chances are you’ll reconnect with old friends and make new ones. “Volunteering gave me a reason to get up in the morning and stimulated my brain as I learned about topics and issues that were completely unfamiliar to me,” says one volunteer.
To help educate older adults about the benefits of volunteering, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) launched a public education campaign to raise awareness of the issue and to prompt older adults to take action. The “Doing Good Is Good for You: Volunteer!” brochure is the centerpiece of the campaign. This brochure provides you with a self-assessment checklist that can help you evaluate the range of issues and activities that you may find most interesting in a volunteer setting. One prospective volunteer who completed a checklist of his interests was a lifelong musician. He checked “arts and culture” as a favorite and said he loved teaching others. When the local volunteer coordinator signed him up, she had no idea that his instrument of choice was a ukulele. Two years later, his lessons have become so popular, he’s teaching in two senior centers to packed classes. The point is, there’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone, and it can be found with the simple click of a mouse. Focus on what you have Write down three positive things you’re grateful for every night before you go to bed. Research shows that gratitude journaling can put you in a dramatically better mood and even prolong that feeling for weeks and months the more you practice. Gratitude opens up your brain to attract positivity like bees to honey. The write stuff Think of someone in your life who has made a significant positive impact and write a letter expressing how much that person means to you. If possible, meet this person face-toface and read the letter aloud. Notice the person’s reaction and savor those moments to recall in the future. Thankful awareness Try a new experience with the family and look for teachable moments, such as volunteering at a food bank or handing out gifts at a children’s hospital. Sometimes the best way to appreciate all of the good in our own world is to become more aware of those who are suffering. Gratitude in the face of adversity can help us weather the storms, provide a greater perspective to the plight of others and strengthen our social bonds.

Phone management means safer driving for us all
Mobile phones have become an essential part of life for most people, helping them stay connected and increase productivity. This technology, however, can also be a distraction when driving, which puts everyone on the road at risk. Distracted driving isn’t just an issue for young adults. Pervasive technology use means this is a multi-generational problem. For professionals in particular, the expectation to stay productive and reachable means a constant temptation to use cellphones when driving. In January 2017, the NSC reported that Cargill was the largest privately held company to prohibit the use of mobile devices. Chairman and CEO David MacLennan just marked the one-year anniversary of following the policy. If he can do it, you can do it. With that in mind, here are five simple steps to make the roads safer for everyone.

1. Auto response Use a free automated response app to let callers know that you’re driving and can’t take the call. You can personalize the response so incoming calls or texts receive a text message saying you’re on the road. 2. DND If you’re driving a vehicle outfitted with communication technology, use its “do not disturb” feature to unplug from calls and texts while behind the wheel. 3. Block drive times Just as you schedule meetings, use shared calendars to block times you’ll be driving. This alerts anyone else connected to your calendar when you’ll be out of touch. 4. Out of sight, out of mind A study by AT&T found that 62 percent of drivers keep their phones within reach in the car. Put yours where you can’t see or reach it, such as in the back seat, trunk or glove box. 5. Pull over If you must take a call while on the road, let it go to voicemail and pull over in a safe location to return the call. Plan “cellphone stops” along your route if needed.

Q: How do I register my older cats as support animals? Do I have to register with the state? A: There is no requirement to register any pet as a support animal, and there is no “official” registry for support and therapy pets. Do not get sucked into paying money to any online “registry” that says you have to do it. You should, however, have something that identifies your cats as support animals, so that you can travel with them and keep them in otherwise pet-free apartments. The most accepted document is a letter from a doctor or therapist stating that you need a support animal. Most airlines will accept this document, as do most landlords or apartment managers. The letter does not need to specify the condition for which you need support. Please note: Support and therapy pets are NOT service animals. They do not fall under ADA rules, so stores, restaurants and airlines do NOT have to let them inside or on board.

Simple strategies for when flying gets frustrating
Decades ago, taking a flight was truly a privilege. People looked forward to comfy seats, cold drinks and friendly service. Today? Not so much. With cramped seating and impossibly long security lines, flying is the unpleasant grunt work of travel—something you endure to make it to the better thing. But travel pros know the best ways to soothe their nerves in the face of even the most aggravating situations. Here are some smart strategies to help you cool your jets when dealing with travel annoyances. Noisy passengers Whether the toddler in row 15 is throwing a fit, or your neighbor continually wants to strike up a conversation, few things are more annoying than noisy passengers. A pair of noise-canceling headphones is a worthy investment. While dampening the surrounding noise, headphones can help you focus on work, watch a movie or even fall asleep.
Seat kickers Many parents have been on both sides of the “seatkicking” issue. No one wants to feel their chair kicked, but it’s harder to prevent than a lot of non-parents think. The key to staying calm, is dealing with the situation early and politely. Turn around with a smile and ask the child’s parent if they could help their child to not bump the seat in front of them. Finally, be patient. The parents want a peaceful flight just as much as you do. Flight delays There’s no need to get worked up when you get the bad news that your flight will be late due to maintenance issues. Instead of getting frustrated, use the extra time to treat yourself. Grab a favorite beverage or head to one of those chair massages in the concourse. Preparation is key to staying calm, so before the plane takes off, keep your device stocked with movies, albums and books. But the day can also be a meaningful time to reflect on our blessings and remember those who have impacted our lives. Many families have special traditions they use to show gratitude to their friends, family and faith. Here are a few we received from our Grand Seasons family when we asked readers to share a cherished tradition that has helped their family experience real gratitude amidst the food and fellowship of the holiday. Breakfast Club “For our family, Thanksgiving Day begins early, with our family gathered around a card table in the living room to share a special, once-a-year breakfast. Between bites of poppy seed cake and sips of eggnog, we record the year’s blessings on notebook paper: landing a new job, reconnecting with old friends, finding a great sale on kids’ shoes, earning an A in Spanish. No item is too small for the list.” Tree of Thanks “In my family sentiments are usually kept to one’s self, so I knew my siblings and their spouses wouldn’t be comfortable participating in traditions where vocal expressions of gratitude were required. So, I pulled out a craft project I had done with my kids. I made a tree from brown construction paper and taped it to the wall. Then I made leaves out of red, yellow and orange paper. I handed out the leaves to my family, asking them to write something they were thankful for on each leaf. I told them they didn’t need to put their name on the leaves. The kids were enthusiastic. While the adults were reluctant at first, once they read the leaves, they all wrote down at least one thankful thought. I was surprised to see some leaves with detailed, heartfelt lists, and a few relatives filled more than one leaf!” Tablecloth of Memories “One year, I brought a tablecloth and a package of fabric pens. I asked our family and guests to write something on the tablecloth they were thankful for. Everyone took turns writing short notes on the cloth, and we continue the tradition every year. November 11, 1918 At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5:00 a.m that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signs an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. November 13, 1982 The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, D.C. The memorial is a simple V-shaped blackgranite wall inscribed with the names of the 57,939 Americans who died in the conflict, arranged in order of death, not rank. November 14, 1970 A chartered jet carrying most of the Marshall University football team crashes in West Virginia. All 75 passengers are killed, including 37 football players,
the coach, doctors, the athletic director and 25 team boosters. November 16, 2001 “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” opens in movie theaters. The film, which starred Daniel Radcliffe in the title role, went on to become one of the highestgrossing movies in history. November 17, 1968 The Oakland Raiders score two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York Jets—and no one sees it.
