AMAZE THE GRANDKIDS WITH A LITTLE SCIENCE Captivate the youngsters with these hands-on projects
Amaze your preschoolers and young school-age grandkids with the exciting world of science and these three simple science tricks. They are safe and fun to do at home when you’re looking for something new to share together. Dry Hankie Trick Stuff a piece of facial tissue or a hankie into the bottom of a tall plastic cup. Turn the cup upside-down and submerge it directly into a sink, bathtub or backyard wading pool filled with water. Push the cup all the way to the bottom of the sink, tub or pool, and bring it straight up and out of the water. Pull the tissue or hankie out. It will be dry! (Remember, the key to success is to keep the cup perfectly straight when plunging into the water and pulling it out again.) Shiny Pennies Your audience will be amazed to see a dingy penny or copper pot transformed magically into a shiny object,

Measure 1 1/2 cups cornstarch in a large mixing bowl. Add about 1 cup water and stir to form a thick paste. Add more water if it’s too thick. Now, roll the goop in your hand to form a ball. As you hold it tightly, it behaves like a solid. Squeeze it, and then let it drip through your fingers to discover its unique properties as it flows into the bowl in ribbons. Or, place it on a cookie sheet, press it flat and then roll it in a ball. It’s amazing!

Apparently your mindset matters
As Americans age, one element seems to be key for their mental and physical health: optimism. That’s the finding suggested by a new Humana survey, which asked Americans age 60 and over how they perceive the importance of various wellness traits. Although the survey uncovered many perspectives, the findings about optimism suggest a possible link between a “glass half full” mentality and mental and physical health: • Older Americans who rated themselves as very optimistic about aging tended to be the most active physically, socially and in their communities.
• They also reported a much lower number of physically unhealthy days per month on average: 2.84 for the most optimistic, compared to 12.55 physically unhealthy days for the least optimistic. • The most optimistic also felt on average 12 years younger than their actual age (those who are least optimistic felt on average 7 years older than their actual age). The survey also asked respondents to rate how they feel about the depiction of people age 60 and over in pop culture: in film, television, commercials and so on. Overwhelmingly, the respondents perceived these media portrayals of their own demographic as inaccurate, rating the accuracy level as, on average, 5 or less on a 10-point scale. Those aging Americans who do feel that media accurately portrays them think about aging more than the average and have a higher level of fear about aging than their peers.

Now it’s taken the next step with Hospice Compare. The website www.medicare.gov/hospicecompare just recently launched online. Right from the front page, it’s helpful: You can search for a hospice agency by

People you love make you feel good and they support your dreams. 10. Express your love to the important people in your life as often as possible. Not only will this make them feel good, but it makes you feel great! 11. Play. Spend time laughing and doing silly things with your spouse, children or friends. 12. Express yourself. There’s only one you. Own it, love it and let yourself shine! 13. Help others. 14. Celebrate. Recognize the little moments as well as the big—that way you won’t miss a thing. 15. Value your time. If something doesn’t bring anything positive to your life, it doesn’t deserve your time. 16. No more negative self-talk. The more time you spend in the negative, the worse it gets, and the longer it takes to climb out of that spiral. 17. Relax and recharge. Take vacations and don’t work too much. October 16, 1773 The first public statement against the British Parliament’s Tea Act, a document known as the “Philadelphia Resolutions,” urges all Americans to oppose the British tax. Two months later, a group of colonists disguised as Mohawks boarded three British tea ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. October 17, 1906 Wilhelm Voigt, a 57-year-old German shoemaker, impersonates an army officer and leads an entire squad of soldiers to help him steal 4,000 marks from the mayor’s office. “Road trip!” To some of you those enthusiastically exclaimed words bring back lots of memories. To others, going on a road trip is still on the to-do list. If the idea sounds appealing, here are some helpful thoughts to get you dreaming. Start by thinking about your vehicle. You can rent a comfy SUV with luxury seats and stereo, and then spend nights in motels. You won’t be putting the mileage on your own vehicle, and if the SUV breaks down, a replacement is only a phone call away. A rental also gives you the option of a one-way trip: You can leave the vehicle at an airport and fly home.
