To help educate older adults about the benefits of volunteering, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) launched a public education campaign to raise awareness of the issue and to prompt older adults to take action. The “Doing Good Is Good for You: Volunteer!” brochure is the centerpiece of the campaign. This brochure provides you with a self-assessment checklist that can help you evaluate the range of issues and activities that you may find most interesting in a volunteer setting.

There are two things that active adults have in spades these days: time and knowledge. And both make them the perfect match for volunteering. By giving back as little as two hours a week, or about 96 hours a year, older adults are discovering how to keep their lives active and healthy.
One prospective volunteer who completed a checklist of his interests was a lifelong musician. He checked “arts and culture” as a favorite and said he loved teaching others. When the local volunteer coordinator signed him up, she had no idea that his instrument of choice was a ukulele. Two years later, his lessons have become so popular, he’s teaching in two senior centers to packed classes.
Research shows that seniors who volunteer can combat depression, stave off chronic pain, and boost brain power. In short, volunteering can promote longevity. Still need another reason to get out there and volunteer? With the number of volunteers age 65 and older expected to double in a few years, chances are you’ll reconnect with old friends and make new ones. “Volunteering gave me a reason to get up in the morning and stimulated my brain as I learned about topics and issues that were completely unfamiliar to me,” says one volunteer.
The point is, there’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone, and it can be found with the simple click of a mouse. November 11, 1918 At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5:00 a.m that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signs an armistice agreement.

Amazing grace The dinner table is a great place to reflect and reinforce our feelings of gratitude. Before you eat, go around in a cricle and give a group-wide grace. Starting at one end of the table, ask everyone to pray a word of thanks to God for at least one encouraging event or one special person that they’re thankful to have in their life.
Focus on what you have Write down three positive things you’re grateful for every night before you go to bed. Research shows that gratitude journaling can put you in a dramatically better mood and even prolong that feeling for weeks and months the more you practice. Gratitude opens up your brain to attract positivity like bees to honey. The write stuff Think of someone in your life who has made a significant positive impact and write a letter expressing how much that person means to you. If possible, meet this person face-toface and read the letter aloud. Notice the person’s reaction and savor those moments to recall in the future. Thankful awareness Try a new experience with the family and look for teachable moments, such as volunteering at a food bank or handing out gifts at a children’s hospital. Sometimes the best way to appreciate all of the good in our own world is to become more aware of those who are suffering. Gratitude in the face of adversity can help us weather the storms, provide a greater perspective to the plight of others and strengthen our social bonds.

An estimated 10,000 disabled veterans are expected to benefit from the $8 million in grants that the Department of Veterans Affairs will award to sports programs for 2018. Groups in all 50 states will get a cut of the money to use in planning, managing and implementing their programs. These programs range from city and regional sports, community groups, and parks and rec to sports clinics, wheelchair games and golf tournaments...even preparation for Paralympic competition. Interested in participating? For one thing, it’s a lot of fun, and you’ll meet others with the same challenges, goals and determination. If you think you’re not quite up to it yet, talk to your clinical team about what you can do to get ready to participate in adaptive programs. To learn more, go online to www.va.gov/ adaptivesports. If you are like most families, the stress of having grandkids and maintaining hectic schedules can heat up the happiest of households in no time—especially when it comes to trying to decide what to have for dinner. With a little planning and some cooperation, however, even the busiest family can find time to sit down and enjoy a meal together. The following tips will give you an idea of how you can streamline the dinner process and maxmize family time. Get the whole household involved Why limit family members to such chores as washing and drying dishes? You can also put them to work on tasting food and choosing the menus.
Schedule a mock cooking class If you want to get family members involved, make time on a weekend for a prepping and cooking session, where everyone can share knife skills, recipes and other culinary lessons. Do a taste test Let’s face it, every family has that one member who is just plain finicky. To combat that, have them weigh in for taste tests. This way, you can plan to cook that dish in bulk. Strive for leftovers Whoever is cooking can make extra of anything that’s a hit with family members and store leftovers in the fridge or freezer.
