VETERANS POST

The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing the new Veterans Coordinated Access and Rewarding Experiences (CARE) Act and has sent those ideas to the House and Senate Veterans Affairs committee. This new CARE Act proposes to simplify eligibility requirements, implement new care coordination support, and streamline clinical and admin processes. Said VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin,

“We want veterans to work with their VA physicians to make informed decisions that are best for their clinical needs, whether in the VA or in the community.” VA officials are proposing to change the 40-mile, 30-day difficulty rule that has kept many veterans from getting care. There are other items as well: tools to strengthen VA care, partner with other federal agencies and “business process enhancements to improve financial management.” I suspect this last one means “paying bills on time so community-care providers won’t quit or send the bill to the veteran.” To find out how quickly your nearest facility can see you, go online to www.accesstocare.va.gov.

Tips for staying positive and peaceful this holiday

Christmas should be one of the happiest times of the year. Many times, however, we find ourselves grumbling and arguing during this season more than any other. So what should you do when your seasonal cheer decays into conflict and your Christmas tidings turn to marital tension? 1. Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude Many people focus on the negative aspects of life for so long that they have difficulty seeing anything worth celebrating. Developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most important things you can do to enhance the emotional climate of your marriage. Think back over a day and ask yourself a few questions: “What have I complained about and to whom did I complain? What is it like living with me?” If you are really serious, ask your spouse, your children, and at least one work associate this question: “What have you recently heard me

complain about?” Write their responses down as they share them with you. Often our self-perception is very different from how others see us. 2. Appreciate the Little Things Verbalize gratitude for the little things in your life. Look around you and verbally thank God for the things you see. It’s a simple thing, but it brings to the front of your mind the many physical things for which you can be grateful. Each week during the month of December, express gratitude to your spouse and family for something you appreciate about them. If gratitude is going to become a way of life, we must look for the positive things in all of our relationships. 3. Move Beyond “Bah, Humbug!” Christmas cheer only lasts a few weeks, but the joy that comes from knowing what life is really about, should last yearround. The next time you hear yourself grumbling about something, apologize to those around you. Apologizing for our failures is one of the fastest ways to get rid of a negative attitude. If during the month of December you replace grumbling with gratitude, you will lay the foundation for a more positive and uplifiting new year in 2018.

1. Say “thank you.” Expressing gratitude to others for the things they do for us makes them feel appreciated and validated. That makes them more likely to do good work for us in the future. We then know we can count on them. It’s a win-win. 2. Give out compliments. When we compliment others, we can build rapport and create a meaningful connection with them. DREADING THE HOLIDAYS?

Even if you’re alone, you can enjoy this time of year

• Check senior centers to see what events they might be hosting. Ask if they’re joining with the community children’s fund and will be wrapping presents. If they’re planning a bus trip to a big city to see plays or do sightseeing, chances are the costs will be affordable at group pricing.

Are you already dreading the holidays? If you are, you’re not alone. Many seniors feel the pressures of lack of money at this time of year, or the even bigger burden of loneliness because family has moved away and friends have passed away.

• Find out if any of the local churches will be hosting free holiday dinners, and consider going! Call to ask if they need help setting up beforehand.

While there are no fixes for these, there are some steps you can take to feel better and maybe enjoy the holidays.

• Check out a tall stack of books from the library for your at-home days. You might discover a new author you like. While you’re at the library, offer to sign up for book shelving if others aren’t available on their regular schedule.

• Grab the newspaper, a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list of all the free events in your area and plan to attend at least some of them. Invite a friend you haven’t seen in a long time, or maybe even someone you know is alone for the holiday.

While nothing can take the place of having family and friends with you over the holidays, alternating busy days with relaxing ones at home can help make the holidays less stressful. Remember too, that the holidays are about being grateful for what you do have, so keep your eyes focussed on your blessings.

Q: I have three dogs. My female Schnauzer, “Chloe,” plays great with the other two, but when the time comes to relax, she goes crazy licking their ears and eyes. It doesn’t seem to bother the two males, but the continuous licking sounds really bother me. Is this just a female mommy-thing or is she obsessed? All three dogs have been fixed. A: Chloe’s behavior sounds more like a compulsion than a simple “mommy” or nurturing thing. It also seems to be a way of signaling dominance. Remember, you are the top dog of them all. Give a refresher course in basic commands: stay being the most important. When the dogs are in a “down” position and told to “stay,” watch Chloe. If she starts licking, repeat the “stay” command; if she continues, separate her from the others and practice the “down-stay” commands more.
