Great theatre lives here.

BMO is pleased to support the Grand Theatre and the artists that are captivating audiences with exciting, innovative, and entertaining productions.

We’re proud to sponsor the Grand Theatre's 2025/26 Season.

Welcome to the Grand Theatre

We’re so glad you’re here.

The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

WELCOME

I spent Grade 11 in France, giving me first-hand access to what it feels like to be immersed in a language that is not the language of one’s heart; to be isolated within a culture that feels determined to hold you as “other.” Our story starts in 1948 – I can only imagine how being post-World War II can add to those feelings, particularly for a French woman and a German woman.

And then there is fame.

What I love about this story, told originally through the imaginations of German Daniel Große Boymann and Austrian Thomas Kahry, and adapted for our stage by the endlessly talented Canadian Erin Shields, is that it uses music, conflict, and language to transport us. Prior to reading this play, I had no idea that these two icons even knew one another. They seem so different – Piaf wearing her heart on her sleeve and her pain in public, while Dietrich hid everything behind a mask of glamour. But friendship is funny that way, attraction is funny that way. Often, we are drawn by our admiration of that which we ourselves are not.

It is in this mix that our story emerges. A story of female friendship, of love, of fame, of addiction, of immense talent, of self-doubt, of heartbreak, of perseverance.

I confess that I actually came to the music of Édith Piaf through an album by Canadian-American songstress Martha Wainwright – Sans fusils, ni souliers, à Paris. I would listen to that album on my headphones and sing “L’accordéoniste” full voice while walking across the Burrard Street Bridge in Vancouver, weeping openly – the story a soundtrack to my overly romantic soul. Through that gateway, I discovered the powerhouse that is Édith Piaf.

Marlene Dietrich was more remote to me, more elusive. I knew the iconic images, that voice, the control, the wink in her demeanor. But Piaf/Dietrich is the first time that I cracked behind that perfect image to see what lies beneath. And it is always worth looking beneath.

Many of my favourite plays to read are the ones that leave gaps. In reading this script, there were huge chunks of story and staging that were left blank. What is happening in this moment? How did they get here? Who are they speaking to? As a theatre creator, I find that thrilling – it allows staging to be part of writing the story in each individual production.

So join us on this unique journey into the lives of these two women and how their friendship gave each of them the gift to shine a little brighter.

A TRANSLATION SUMMARY OF THE SONGS OF EDITH PIAF

La vie en rose

When they take me in their arms, I see life through rose coloured glasses. Their simple words do something to me. It’s them for me, me for them in this life.

L’accordéoniste

The lady of the night works her corner, but slips away to hear her love, the accordionist, play at the club. She only has eyes for him until the war rips him away. Now there is a new accordionist, but her life is ruined.

Padam, padam

There is a song that haunts me—chases me, overtakes me, never lets me rest—padam, padam. The memories of loves past, life past, all in a song that invades my mind and never lets go.

Mon manège à moi

Love is a merry-go-round, spinning, spinning me—I am always at the carnival when I’m in your arms. What a life we have together when we love one another.

mon dieu

My God, give me my love just a bit longer. Six months, two months, one month. Time to begin, or to finish. Time to make new memories. Dear God, just a bit more time.

Hymne à l’amour

Everything can crumble around us—none of it matters if you love me. I would do anything you asked of me. Do you believe we belong together? One day we will be reunited.

Milord

Come in, my lord, and sit at my table. I am just a shadow from the street—put up your feet here in my kingdom. Smile at me, put in a little effort... bravo my lord.

Bravo pour le clown

Your nose lights up and your hair is full of feathers. Your daughter picks your pocket, and you play the idiot. Bravo. I’m the king and I do my act, throwing my wife from the top of the circus tent.

Non, je ne regrette rien

No, I regret nothing. Neither the good nor the bad—it has all been paid for, swept away, forgotten. I regret nothing —I begin again today, with you.

WHEN OPPOSITES CLASH ... LET US HANDLE THE CONFLICT.

When business disputes threaten your company, you need more than just legal advice; you need strategic representation.

AT LERNERS, OUR FOCUS IS YOU.

THE ANGEL AND THE SPARROW

Marlene Dietrich was born December 27, 1901 to an upper-middle-class family living in Berlin. She was tutored from a young age, attended private school, and spoke multiple languages as a child. Édith Piaf came into the world on December 19, 1915 and was abandoned at birth by her mother, a Parisian café singer. She was raised at first by her grandmother in a brothel, and then later by her father who was a circus acrobat.

Two women born fifteen years and 1,000 kilometres apart, who found fame – and each other – years later in America.

In her years before Piaf, Dietrich was a leading lady of Hollywood, nominated for an Academy Award, recognized with a star on the Walk of Fame, and one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. She lived a glamourous life of love affairs, fame, and politics. Rivalling Greta Garbo, she worked alongside Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and John Wayne – and listed Cary Grant, John Kennedy (Jr. and Sr.), Frank Sinatra, and Ernest Hemingway among her companions. She broke onto the American cinema scene in the film “Morocco,” kissing a woman on the lips on-screen for one of the first times in history. During WWII, she refused to work in Germany. Instead, she raised money to aid the escape efforts of Jewish Germans, helped sell American war bonds, and performed for troops across the United States as an honourary Colonel.

Nineteen-year-old Piaf was singing on the streets of Paris to support herself when she caught the attention of Louis Leplée, the French cabaret owner who

gave her the “piaf” (sparrow) moniker and suggested her signature black dress. A year later, she had her first recordings – and he was murdered, still unsolved.

Piaf’s life was marked by heartbreak and loss, which came through in her raw, emotional vocals. Her passionate, powerful ballads of love, life, and longing – including the internationally famous “La vie en rose” and “Non, je ne regrette rien” – swept away audiences and established her as France’s greatest singer and one of the most legendary voices of all time.

The German American femme fatale of the silver screen and the great French chanteuse are thought to have met in New York City during the late 1940s. Their lifelong, tumultuous relationship is the story set to unfold on our stage.
