WELCOME
J
ust over a year ago my father faced a sudden, debilitating illness. The twists and turns of the complications that followed brought the subject of Medical Assistance in Death to the table. My sister and I are both readers – researchers – so we instantly read everything we could get our hands on and interviewed everyone we knew who knew anything about MAID. I spoke at length with a good friend who had medically assisted his own mother’s death, but outside of Canada and sidestepping the law. It all seemed impossible to believe and yet, life is full of sudden impossibilities.
There are complex beliefs on every side of this argument because the question is deeply, unfathomably complicated. Religion, morals, beliefs about death, beliefs about the measure of a human life – all play into this issue. Every case is different and yet rules and laws must be universal. At the end of the day, there is just a person, their individual situation, the family who surrounds them, and love. Needless to say, from material this complex is where great theatre is born! In the hands, and pen, of Jordi Mand both sides of the debate are achingly clear to us. Through her humour
and her perspective not just on life, but on what it means to leave a mark on the world, we experience the lighter side of the situation while also plumbing its depths. I love new plays. You as the audience are witnessing a small miracle of imagination, diligence, and resources coming together, through time, to birth this completed idea into the world. Never again will it be quite like this. There are no clear answers to these great life debates. But In Seven Days allows us to laugh, to examine the question through the lens of one family, and to leave with some light in our hearts, having experienced something new, together. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds. In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area. Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
I
n Seven Days is a play of fine balance. A balance Between people Between families Between the seriousness of life and the laughter of that same life. As we explored this piece, I was continually amazed by its depth, its heart and how it enfolds us into the lives of these very human people who are all struggling and growing until the end. HAROLD GREEN All the world’s a stage and all of us want to be players. Each of us shapes a unique role in the scripts we write for ourselves. As for Harold, his role was in building safe, family-friendly havens. In addition, his interest in Talmud as well as Shakespeare led him to making the world a better place in many ways. Whether it was the time and expertise he devoted to Mount Sinai Hospital, to the Jewish Community Centre or to the labourers who worked in his industry, he was fully engaged in improving lives. He enjoyed going to the theatre and we suspect that he would have liked to have been on a stage. Vicariously, he is now on one. He would want you to enjoy his legacy. — The Harold Green Family

PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTES
S
everal years ago a family friend qualified for MAID and decided to go through with it. He was my father's childhood friend and an active member of the London Jewish community, so his decision had a significant impact on those around him. I remember talking to my brother about it and he said to me “I don't understand how someone could choose to do something like that.” I asked him if our father (who we both love and adore) was sick enough to qualify for MAID and decided to go through with it, would he feel the same way? He said, "Yes" and part of me understood exactly how he felt. But as someone who has dealt with serious health issues myself as well as having watched my husband, mother, and grandparents deal with serious health issues, I also completely understood why someone would decide to go through with MAID. This is the moment the play was born.
this production, to Dennis Garnhum who programmed this piece as part of his last season, and to the team at the Grand who have been absolutely wonderful to collaborate with. I have loved working with Philip, this cast, this crew, and this creative team who have done the most beautiful work together. And I am indebted to Rabbi Debra Stahlberg Dressler at Temple Israel who has been an incredible resource and to my family who have helped make this all happen. JORDI MAND PLAY WRIGHT
In Seven Days is about how, as children, one learns to say goodbye and how, as parents, one resolves to do what is best for them. I am beyond grateful to the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company in Toronto who first commissioned the play and who are co-producers on

The legacy Bernie left to his family is now finding its way to different sources that will enhance the lives of Londoners and we are delighted to support the Grand Theatre and consider it a mitzvah. Student Spotlight: ruthie rennie
Describe a highlight of your time being in the Student Club: “The best part about Student Club is being able to talk and interact with people who share the same interest in theatre. Getting to catch up with friends about what projects they have been involved in in their community and then getting to share the same thing back with them is something that I always look forward to every month.”
In what ways have you applied your exposure to theatre and love of the arts to other areas of your life? “Through Student Club, I have been able to engage more with other people who have the same interests as me. Not only at the Grand but I find myself more willing to be social at school or work. I feel more confident in myself and my interests. I am also more willing to test my creativity whenever I can.”
What is a goal for you five years from now? “Five years from now I will be doing theatre tech, specifically sound, for a theatre somewhere having the most amazing time doing something that I am passionate about.”

EMERGING TALENT PROFILE: Morgan Cameron Is there an experience you have had that you feel is unique to this program? The most valuable experience that I feel I’ve had within this program is that I’ve learned so much from my cutter and mentor, Liz Mastrandrea. She has tons of experience in both theatre and film, and has given me infinite advice and patience.
Since you started, What are your 3 highlights of the program so far? 1.
I loved being able to mentor and develop the skills of the high school students that worked on The Phantom Phantom of the Opera. of the Opera. 2. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Ins Choi, the writer and star of Kim’s ddd Convenience. abc 3. I played a part in developing and building the Oompa Loompa puppets in Crlie and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Seeing them on the Chocola stage was amazing!
Why did the TD Emerging Talent Program speak to you?

So, how does your gift make a difference, in the GRAND scheme of things? Your donation, at any level, not only supports putting productions on our stages, it also helps provide subsidies for Student Club, Student Matinees, Relaxed Performances, High School Project and funds tickets for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a Grand show.
As a registered charity, Grand donors are not only eligible for tax receipts, but also receive valuable perks through our Donor Benefits Program.
