Welcome tothe Grand Theatre We’re so glad you’re here. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak. In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area. Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together. WELCOME I grew up playing piano and have always had a complex relationship with my own musicianship. There were definite periods of resistance to it (sorry Mum!), but I can’t deny the doors it has opened for me, nor would I ever give up the feeling I get when I sit down to play, losing myself in the act of creating music. I recently met a piano teacher who told me that if a child is having a tough day and just can’t find the energy to practice, in her opinion the act of listening to a great piece of music while getting ready for bed can also count as practice. Life is full of challenges. Her goal as a music teacher is to give young people music as a place to go when life gets hard. A place to slip away to. What a beautiful idea. That by teaching a child to play an instrument, you give them somewhere to go any time things get tough. School of Rock is about an adult getting things terribly wrong and the power of young people to show adults how things should be done. It is a show about how individuality – what makes a person “weird” – can actually be a superpower, as it is what makes them extraordinary. Power comes from being your authentic self. This is one of the great things about the High School Project: not just what the young people involved have to learn, but what we adults have to learn from them. “If you want to rock, you gotta break the rules.” Every year the Grand Theatre High School Project is the show that brings us back from summer, leads us into the season, and sets the tone. What that means for me is that every year I get to start the season inspired by the passion of people discovering theatre, and discovering their voice. This year, they are getting us ready to rock!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Growing up in a family that was passionately immersed in music was nothing short of a blessing. Every event, big or small, was accompanied by the rich melodies of classical, jazz, folk, or rock and roll. By the age of ten, music had woven itself so deeply into the fabric of my life that I dared to write and perform a rock opera about motorcycle lovers for my grade four class at Holy Family. With the Beatles as my muse and a sprinkle of Simon & Garfunkel’s magic, I confidently belted out, “My daddy was the family bassman My mama was an engineer And I was born one dark gray morn’ With music coming in my ears, in my ears” I can still remember the look of shock on Miss Orchid’s face. I liked to imagine I was cool, but in truth, I was an outsider. I only had a few friends, and even I could see that what we had in common was that they were outsiders as well. But who loved outsiders? Rock and Roll! Even as a child, I recognized the bravery, audacity, and revolutionary spirit in lyrics like: “Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in the cage?” - Pink Floyd. I was captivated by the transformation of David Bowie into Ziggy Stardust and the soul-stirring rendition of “Respect” Photography by Agatha Knelson.
by Aretha Franklin, as if her very essence demanded it. I longed for the camaraderie of being part of a band, even if just for a fleeting moment, and over time, I found my tribe. Music possesses a unique power to ignite change, stirring thoughts and emotions in ways that no lecture, podcast, Netflix series, or magazine article ever could. It’s magical how 32 bars of music can seize your heart, transport you to a specific moment, or inspire you to take action. Working on this musical is a profound joy, a tribute to the transformative power of Rock and Roll and its ability to help us transcend the versions of ourselves that others expect. It is a privilege to work alongside this extraordinary cast of talented young individuals. I hope they remain true to their authentic selves through the music and inspire us all to embrace that part of ourselves that was “Born to be wild.”

Theatre is where artistic disciplines (singing, acting, dance, design, craft, and more) converge to create extraordinary experiences for audiences. For 28 years, the Grand Theatre High School Project has provided high school students with the opportunity to engage with these disciplines up close and experience how the pieces fit together to make theatre magic.

Live music is a key component of the High School Project, with a legacy of student musicians having played in the orchestra pit and even on stage (such as in Grease, 2009). School of Rock adds another layer to the mix, with student musicians playing live on stage and taking on the narrative responsibility of several leading and supporting characters in the story.

Julian Fellowes Book
Julian Fellowes is creator, sole writer and executive producer of the worldwide television series Downton Abbey. His theatre writing credits are: School of Rock – The Musical (Broadway/Tony Award nominee, Best Book), Mary Poppins (West End, Broadway/Drama Desk nominee, Best Book), Half a Sixpence and The Wind in the Willows. His film writing credits include Gosford Park, Separate Lies, From Time to Time, The Young Victoria, the Downton Abbey movie, Downton Abbey: A New Era and the upcoming Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. His television writing credits include Little Lord Fauntleroy, The Prince and the Pauper, Titanic , Doctor Thorne and most recently, The Gilded Age. He has authored the international bestselling novels Snobs, Past Imperfect and most recently, Belgravia; the children’s book The Curious Adventures of the Abandoned Toys and Downton Abbey scripts. Fellowes is also a screen and stage actor. He and his wife, Emma, live in London and Dorset, England. They have a son, Peregrine.
Glenn Slater Lyrics
Glenn Slater’s first show (How I Survived High School) was produced off-Broadway when he was just 17 years old. With his frequent collaborator, legendary composer Alan Menken, Slater has written the songs for four Broadway hits: Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Grammy winner, Tony nominee), Sister Act (Tony nominee), Leap of Faith and A Bronx Tale. With Andrew Lloyd Webber, Slater penned the lyrics for School of Rock (Tony
nominee), and both book and lyrics for Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera. Other notable stage works include Newyorkers (Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Drama Desk nominee), and the book for Beatsville (with composer/lyricist/wife Wendy Wilf). For the big screen, Glenn co-created Disney’s Tangled (Grammy winner, Oscar and Golden Globe nominee), as well as films as varied as Disney’s Home on the Range, Sausage Party and Uglydolls. His latest animated film, Spellbound (with music by Menken), is currently featured on Netflix. For the small screen, Slater wrote the lyrics for every song in both seasons of ABC-TV’s musical series Galavant (Emmy nominee), as well as for all three seasons of the Disney Channel’s Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure (Emmy winner, two-time nominee). Slater also wrote the lyrics for “The Compass of Your Heart”, the theme for the popular ride Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage at the Tokyo DisneySea theme park. Slater’s songs have been recorded by a dizzying array of artists including Donna Murphy, Raul Esparza, Sierra Boggess, Tim McGraw, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monae and Nick Jonas. In addition to his Grammy and Emmy statuettes, he has been honored with the prestigious Kleban Award for Lyrics, and ASCAP’s New Horizons Award. Glenn is a member of ASCAP and the Dramatists Guild and lives in NYC.

Andrew Lloyd Webber New Music
Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals including Sunset Boulevard, School of Rock, CATS and The Phantom of the Opera. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns six London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Reopened in July 2021, the latter was completely restored and renovated at a cost of over $80 million. His mantra is that every penny of profit made from his theatres is put back into the buildings. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. In Britain, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects. In the United States, the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative provides grant funding directly to under-resourced public schools for their theatre programs and provides scholarships to grade school and university students pursuing studies in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992, created an honorary life peer in 1997, and made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles III in 2024.

LINDA & BILL ROSS For Linda and Bill Ross, the title donors for this year’s Grand Theatre High School Project, their giving is driven by a desire to create opportunity for young people, focusing on healthy growth, education, career-building skills, and spaces that encourage creativity, self-discovery, and passion. Linda is no stranger to the Grand Theatre. Growing up in London, she recalls attending shows at London Little Theatre after perusing the beautiful Simpson’s department store windows downtown during the holidays. She even has some experience in the spotlight as a part of the “Purple Patches” ensemble at Western, where she put her tap-dancing skills to good use; and most recently, for one night only, she and her grandson had walk-on roles for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! As for Bill, he served for seven years on the Grand Theatre Foundation Board of Directors and sees the Grand as a shining beacon within the London landscape. Linda and Bill’s daughter, Rachel, participated in two Grand Theatre High School Productions: Oklahoma! and Sound of Music. As parents, they saw firsthand the short- and long-term positive impacts of the project. Rachel remains friends today with many of those castmates, and holds lifelong transferable skills that she has brought into her many endeavours since. Within the Grand Theatre High School Project, Linda sees an opportunity for young people to find a space where they fit in, to showcase talents on and off stage, build self-confidence, and make lasting friendships with others who share the same passions. This program gives the students an opportunity to think outside the box and see that they can do something new or maybe something uncomfortable. For Linda, a highlight of the program is that it has a spot for everyone – the talent on the stage as well as those who aspire to work backstage: “People can be creative with a hammer, some nails, and plywood.” When asked why the High School Project is so important, Linda answered, “The Grand Theatre High School Project is the greatest thing that London has for students. Young people need an outlet to be creative, to get out of the house, and to showcase their talents.”

For each show at our theatre, actors, designers, directors, and more travel to London, Ontario, and take up residence for weeks, if not months, at a time. The Forest City becomes a home for these artists, in very large part thanks to the London households that open their homes and host them during their residencies at the Grand. Grand Theatre Housing Partners can live alongside an artist throughout the creative process, celebrate on opening night, and are an important part of the theatre magic that takes place at the Grand. HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT GRAD R SHE PLACED THE FIRST STITCH
“Since I can remember, I’ve had opinions – on my outfits, other people’s outfits, and putting them together. This was where I was always going to end up.” Meghan Choma sits in the Grand Theatre Wardrobe Department and talks to us candidly about working on her first professional theatre production twelve years ago as a High School Project student, and now mentoring the next generation as Costume Designer on the Grand Theatre High School Project production of School of Rock.

She initially wanted to join the project as a student photographer, but her mom made sure that Meghan brought a pillowcase that she had made in Family Studies class. She was offered a spot in the Wardrobe Department and became a part of the student company of Grand Theatre High School Project 2014 The Addams Family – followed by Hello, Dolly (2015) and Les Misérables School Edition (2016). Meghan went on to study Technical Production and then Costume Production at Fanshawe College, graduated into a pandemic, and returned to the Grand as a Wardrobe Apprentice in 2022. Now as Assistant Head of Wardrobe, Meghan sees the entire season of Grand Theatre productions through to the stage. A show’s Creative Team, including the Costume Designer, will arrive and work on a particular show, and then move on to their next project. Meghan lives here in London and works alongside colleagues in Props, Scenic Art, Lighting, Sound, and more to produce complete seasons of world-class, London Made theatre for the Grand’s stages.

Meghan fits in summers as Costume Designer at the Blyth Festival. She has also seen her designs on the Stratford Festival’s stage as Assistant Costume Designer on Alice Childress’ The Wedding Band. School of Rock marks a major milestone in her career with her debut costume design at the Grand, where her theatre career first took root. “Being the Costume Designer for the High School Project truly is a dream come true, a big full-circle moment. Starting here in 2014 and now designing it, I really feel like this is what the High School Project is for, to come back and teach the students that could be me in fourteen years,” shares Meghan. “I would hope that after the High School Project, the students feel really secure in themselves and secure in what they want to do, and secure in that it’s okay to not make the same choices as the people around you in your school. There are other people in the world who are like you and who will support you. It might not be in the four walls of your high school, but there is a place for you out in the world.”
