BMO is pleased to support the Grand Theatre and the artists that are captivating audiences with exciting, innovative, and entertaining productions.
We’re proud to sponsor the Grand Theatre's 2025/26 Season.
We’re so glad you’re here.
The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.
Designed by Katie Wilhelm

Come From Away is an international mega-hit. We know that it speaks to people everywhere – to so many people deeply affected by the horror of September 11, 2001 and to everyone looking to put human faces on the generosity and coming-together that marked its aftermath. But I think it hits a little differently here in Canada. This is a Canadian story. This is a small-town Canadian story. It epitomizes the “help your neighbour” attitude that we Canadians are sometimes teased about but ultimately hold dear to our sense of national identity.
Newfoundland holds a very special place in my heart. I spent four summers working and making art on Newfoundland’s West Coast and, in that time, I got to immerse myself among the people and the culture that make that area so great. When Director Julie Tomaino told me about the images she had seen of red chairs in Newfoundland I was immediately transported to hikes I would do in Gros Morne National Park, taking breaks lounging on one of the iconic red chairs, in arguably one of the most stunning places on earth. From Parks Canada: “In 2011, team members at Gros Morne National Park came up with the idea to place 18 sets of Adirondack chairs in lesser-known… stunning locations… Today, the iconic red chairs can be found in over 100 locations.” This now-iconic Canadian landscape marker was born in Newfoundland, telling all the world, You Are Here.

As I write this, the world feels very fractured. The ideological landscape feels torn apart by chasms between belief systems. That weight can feel extremely heavy as we go about our daily lives. In doing what theatre does best, Come From Away does so much to counter those feelings. It transports us to Gander, Newfoundland and lets us live a moment in the shoes of those who reside there, facing a similarly frightening, dangerous time and meeting it with open arms, generosity, love, and care for their fellow humans.
In programming this show, and in the incredible response I have had from Londoners in their excitement to come and see this brand-new London-made production, I can feel that sense of coming together. In addition to the impact of these incredible stories, tunes, and performances, I believe the sense of community it creates is this show’s greatest gift.
Welcome, London. You Are Here.

Come From Away was originally co-produced in 2015 by La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theater and presented in 2016 by Ford’s Theatre.
Come From Away (NAMT Festival 2013) was originally developed at the Canadian Music Theatre Project, Michael Rubinoff Producer, Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and was further developed at Goodspeed Musicals’ Festival of New Artists, in East Haddam, Connecticut. The Canada Council for the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council, and The Fifth Avenue Theatre, Seattle, Washington also provided development support.
COME FROM AWAY is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com
The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this Production is strictly prohibited.

Come From Away reflects something deeply personal to us at Ahria: East Coast roots, open doors, and the power of human connection.
Inspired by the spirit of Gander, we carry that generosity forward in our work and through our annual Pay It Forward Day.
Each September 11, our team is given time and resources to give back to the community in meaningful ways - through donation, volunteerism and acts of kindness.

Because when people feel welcomed, organizations (and communities) thrive.

When you need a lawyer, nothing is more important than finding the right people to represent you.
AT LERNERS, OUR FOCUS IS YOU.
There are so many things I love about this show – I love the music, I love the craft of 12 people telling a story of hundreds, I love that the show hits you in the gut, and I love that it’s Canadian. When Rachel and I began talking about this show, I said early on that if you want the Broadway production on your stage, I’m not the one, because while I love and appreciate the original production, I have no interest in mounting a similar version.
So, how do you re-imagine a show when the original is so well known? What makes a non-replica production great? These were the questions that lived in my brain when I started dreaming about our production. What to do with this iconic, practically perfect, original production? I wanted to honour the tropes of what makes Come From Away special while reimagining what that looks like.
I spent a lot of time reading about Gander, and Newfoundland, and Canada, and rocks, and trees, and chairs, and 9/11 (and the days following 9/11). I read the script over and over, and I listened to the cast recording about 1,000 times. I was continuously pulled toward the line that Beverley says when she arrives in Gander: There’s a giant map on the wall of the airport and someone has written in red marker, “You Are Here.”
You Are Here – a simple phrase that meant so many things. You Are Here is literally Gander, You Are Here is symbolically every passenger forced into the present moment due to unimaginable tragedy, You Are Here is Canada. I did some more research, and an image came up of a single red chair on a frozen body of water. That image was the

jumping-off point for Scott Penner and I to start conversations. I discovered the Parks Canada red chairs, originating at Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland, and spreading right across Canada. We kept running with this idea and made chairs the centrepiece of the show, representing individuals from all over the world, representing countries, religious backgrounds, and communities. I wanted to honour Gander and Newfoundland while also acknowledging the ones ‘from away’ that contributed to the community during those five days. It is my hope that audiences will see the humanity in this approach and leave feeling more connected to the stranger sitting next to them.
I have so many people to thank. Thank you to Rachel for the opportunity to direct this beautiful piece. Thank you to my collaborators - Nicol, Sarah, Hailey, Scott, Ming, Jareth, Brian, Dani, Erika, Suzanne, Abby, Dariusz. Thank you to our four dialect coaches, the Grand staff, the band, the crew, and most especially to this awesome group of actors breathing life into this story. Thank you for your trust, your humour, and your kindness.

A big thank you to Londoners (and beyond!) who donated 150 wooden chairs to support Scott Penner’s unique set design for the Grand Theatre’s production of Come From Away. What a beautiful example of community coming together for the arts!

TEXT AND PHOTO by ArubA MAHMuD, ArTisT, EDucATOr & ArT PsycHOTHErAPy sTuDENT bAsED iN LONDON, ONTAriO
September 11th, 2001. As a Grade 12 student, I heard about the terrible events of that day from an announcement over the school PA system. I felt the same shock, grief, horror, uncertainty, and fear as my classmates. Yet suddenly, all anyone could see was that I, a Muslim Pakistani Canadian, was different. Othered. One of them.
The shock and hurt when classmates we had known since Grade 6 called us terrorists. Going to Zehrs after school with my mom, wearing her hijab, and being pointed and stared at by two employees on their break. Scrutiny from law enforcement. Violent and hateful attacks on Muslims (and those ignorantly mistaken to be Muslim).
From that day onwards, Muslims knew that we would indefinitely be associated with this despicable attack because of our faith, despite the fact that terrorism goes against the very tenets of Islam.
So I’m grateful for the character of Ali, based on a number of Muslim passengers stranded in Gander post 9/11. He was born in the US but told to go back to where he came from (something I’ve heard countless times, despite being born and raised in Southwestern Ontario), had people watching him pray with “fear in their eyes” and lamented of his fellow passengers that, “...They look at me as if I have committed a crime.”
Thankfully, like Ali, myself and other Muslims also experienced some of the warmth and generosity that’s at the heart of this play. Flowers, sweets, and reassuring messages were delivered to our mosque. When I chose to start wearing the hijab in 2003 as a new student at Western, the kindness and support far outweighed the discrimination.

Yet 25 years later, Islamophobia and xenophobia continue to rise. The terrorist who targeted Our London Family was 20 years old on June 6th, 2021, the day of his horrific attack. He grew up post 9/11, where the normalization and rise of Islamophobia eventually led him to murder an innocent and beloved family, leaving a little boy orphaned and seriously injured, simply because they were Muslim and Pakistani Canadian.
The London Remembers artwork, where community members came together to write messages of love, support, and solidarity in a time of unimaginable grief and fear, is reflective of the beautiful actions of the residents of Gander and nearby towns in Newfoundland after 9/11. I pray that we in London and beyond can be inspired by, and embrace this spirit of generosity and welcoming for all.

“ON THE NORTHEAST TIP OF NORTH AMERICA, ON AN ISLAND CALLED NEWFOUNDLAND...”

North America’s oldest English settlement dating back to John Cabot’s landing in 1497.
The Dominion of Newfoundland, which included Labrador, was its own country until joining Canada in 1949 – after repeatedly deciding against confederation over the course of the previous 80 years.

Home to Indigenous Peoples including the Inuit, the Innu, the Mi’kmaq, the Southern Inuit of NunatuKavut, and, nowextinct, the Beothuk.
“THERE’S AN AIRPORT. IT USED TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD...”
Gander’s airport was the largest in the world, playing a key role in ferrying aircraft to Britain during World War II, with four runways, extensive facilities, and advanced communications.

From everyday travelers to icons like the Queen, the Beatles, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe –many passed through Gander and its famous 24-hour lounge, The Big Dipper.

lIbRaRy

ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 Nav Canada personnel stationed at Gander redirected all westbound North Atlantic air traffic and landed 38 PLANES at Gander, making aviation history.

Today, Gander Oceanic OCA remains one of the busiest airspaces in the world with up to 3,000 FLIGHTS PER DAY and 2.6 MILLION KM² of controlled airspace.
“...AND NEXT TO IT, IS A TOWN CALLED GANDER.”
As an inland community established in the 1900s, Gander differs from the typical coastal towns of Newfoundland that date back as early as the 17th century. Ganderites proudly chose to build their homes and community in this comparatively young municipality not yet even 100 years old.

After moving to London in 2008 from Toronto, Chris and Lesley quickly found the Grand Theatre and were thrilled to find professional theatre that was easily accessible and affordable for their family. They fell in love with the beautiful theatre, the variety of plays, and that “there’s something for everyone in the line-up each year…we learn things from every show and find ourselves talking about it for some time afterward.”

One of their favourite parts of attending a show at the Grand is the moment of anticipation when the theatre goes dark before a play is about to begin. Other highlights over the years include the immersive experience of Cabaret, the 7-minute death scene of the butler in Clue, the powerful impact of The Invisible: Agents of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and the many Grand theatre events that have resulted in lifelong friendships.
As passionate supporters of the theatre, Chris and Lesley show their support in many ways including being monthly donors, attending the annual Grand Gala in support of the Grand Theatre High School Project, and recently they have started purchasing 50/50 tickets. In addition, Chris served as Board Chair (2018-2020) and currently sits on the Grand’s Foundation Board. Chris’ time on the boards have shown what it takes to have London Made theatre, understanding all too well that “we can’t rely on ticket sales alone to make the Grand accessible to everyone. Supporting the Grand is important to us to ensure that the theatre stays viable, sustainable, and able to continue putting on amazing plays”.
