I
t is easy to see why Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory holds such appeal. But more than that, there is something about the extremes of human behaviour that draw us to this story. The Buckets aren’t just struggling, they have four grandparents confined to one bed and pennies for mouldy cabbage! Mike Teavee will stomp on his own mother to get to a screen, Veruca Salt will face the wrath of militant squirrels for the sake of “I want,” the list goes on. We all know – even as children – that we contain some of these naughty behaviours. The thrill comes in witnessing what happens when the characters succumb to their extremes, and face the consequences of Wonka! Theatre is a place for magic, which means there is no better way to experience this story than here, live. We all know that films use digital tricks and editing to make magic
happen. In theatre it is all happening right before our eyes, and it is our imagination that fills in the gaps. It is for this reason that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory lives at the heart of our Season of Pure Imagination. I grew up reading Roald Dahl and having it read to me. It was at times truly frightening, but there was something about that horror that was deeply gratifying, knowing that the container of imagination would keep me safe. Roald Dahl broke the rules… and I loved it! What child doesn’t want to hear a story of children outsmarting the grown ups? Whether it is Matilda overturning the violent Miss Trunchbull, or Sophie convincing the Queen of England to save everyone from the Giants … or Charlie Bucket, whose goodness and imagination are even more powerful than his love of candy. As we dive into the holiday season, I wish you the delight of magic and a little bit of Charlie Bucket in your hearts. RACHEL PEAKE

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds. In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area. Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

I
n September of 2007, a television special entitled "Roald Dahl's Revolting Rule Book" aired to commemorate Dahl's 90th birthday and to celebrate his incredible impact on popular culture. It identified several directives he applied to all his children's books, including: adults can be scary, bad things happen, keep a wicked sense of humour, and his number one rule, add chocolate.
Dahl’s was a marvellously rich life. Beyond achieving extraordinary success as a beloved children’s author, albeit not so beloved by parents, he was a decorated RAF fighter pilot, a British Security Network spy, and an inventor of medical treatments for Hydrocephalus and stroke recovery. Without going into gory details of some of his hardships, suffice it to say that he endured enough to explain his distinctive, dark, acidic and subjective writing style! And amidst all his life’s fantastic features, the details that charm me most concern his relationship with...chocolate. Alright, I must provide one grim detail of hardship. Whilst a young lad at private boarding school, he sought revenge on the local sweet shop owner, a cruel woman named Mrs. Pratchett, by hiding a dead mouse in her jar of gobstoppers. Once caught, he was so severely caned by the Headmaster that he found it challenging to sit for weeks afterward!
This experience might explain his distrust of formal authority figures and probably laid the groundwork for future characters like Matilda's Miss Trunchbull. But a delightful memory of Dahl's time at boarding school was a dream come true for any child: a nearby Cadbury chocolate factory selected his school’s students to test their new chocolate inventions. So, he regularly received large boxes of delectable sweet innovations. This was the spark that ignited Dahl's imaginings of a mysterious chocolate factory owner, Willy Wonka, who spent his life inventing confectionery delights to entice the world. Welcome to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the funny, adventurous, grizzly, witty, scary, delectable world of Dahl's creation, where ill-mannered children get their just deserts but where dreams can also come true.

Describe a highlight of your time being in the Student Club. My theatre experiences have brought a drastic change to the way that I treat myself. Being an immigrant child, adapting and fitting in to the norms of this culture has been my greatest obsession. Whenever I felt the differences between my friends and I in how we view the world, I used to blame myself for not fitting in enough. However, as I was exposed to theatre, I started to ask more about myself - how I feel and how I think - and value the unique thoughts I have.
HOW have you applied your exposure to theatre and love of the arts to other areas of your life? When I find my friends in the lobby after the show. As soon as I see their eyes, I can tell that they have so many things that they want to share! The moments that we talk about the show and how we felt are such precious experiences to me. In a fast-changing world like today in which we say “nothing is original anymore,” these are the rare moments that we express our unique thoughts with honesty.

What would you say to another student who may be considering coming to student club? Do it! We always say we don’t have time for the things that aren’t considered essential. Arts and theatre may not seem as as important as your academics, but they are an important opportunity for getting to know yourself and ultimately making smarter choices by being able to answer the question: “Is this what I really want, or do I want this because others want it?”

IT’S GONNA BE GREAT White Chocolate Kissed Gingerbread Cookies
3 cups (750 mL) flour
2 tsps (10 mL) Club House® Ginger, Ground 1 tsp (5 mL) Club House Ground Cinnamon

1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
1/4 tsp (1 mL) Club House® Ground Nutmeg
1/2 cup (125 mL) molasses
1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
1 tsp (5 mL) Club House® Pure Vanilla Extract
3/4 cup (170 g) butter softened 3/4 cup (175 mL) firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup (60 mL) granulated sugar 60 white and milk chocolate swirled kiss-shaped candies
1.
Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt in large bowl. Set aside. Beat butter and brown sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add molasses, egg and vanilla; mix well. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until well mixed. Press dough into a thick flat disk. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Shape dough into 1-inch (2 ½ cm) balls. Roll in granulated sugar to coat. Place 2 inches (5 cm) apart on ungreased baking sheets.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges of cookies just begin to brown. Immediately press a chocolate candy into center of each cookie. Remove to wire racks; cool completely. Store cookies in airtight container up to 5 days.

She is proficient in a variety of instruments, and her versatility as a musician extends to various genres. In addition to her career as a performer, Alexa has a passion for teaching, and also does some arranging and transcribing in her spare time. She is committed to pushing the boundaries of her playing and making a lasting impact on the world of music, regularly rehearsing and performing in the London area.

In 2019 she was awarded the Forest City London Music Awards Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year. She currently plays in smaller jazz ensembles and recently joined the Jazzabelles, an all-women jazz and swing band. Jayne recently formed her own quartet, who play compositions by herself and other jazz women. These groups have performed at venues such as Aeolian Hall's D & S Lounge, the Wolf Performance Hall, and Dundas Place.

Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. He remains one of the world’s greatest storytellers and is celebrated annually by the world’s biggest author-based event, Roald Dahl Day – which is recognised across the globe on 13th September. His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, published in 1961 and was a huge hit. Every subsequent book became a best-seller. Today, his stories are available in 59 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-award winning production of Matilda The Musical.
Marc Shaiman Composer & Lyricist
Marc Shaiman has been writing music, lyrics, arrangements, orchestrations and very lengthy Emails since entering show business at the age of 16, at LaMama, in 1976. He and co-lyricist Scott Wittman have written the songs for director Rob Marshall and Disney's Mary Poppins Returns. He received a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for his score for the film. In addition, Mr. Shaiman and Mr. Wittman received an Oscar nomination for the song "The Place Where Lost

Scott Wittman Composer & Lyricist
Scott Wittman co-wrote (with Marc Shaiman)the lyrics for the Olivier Award winning musical Hairspray, for which the pair received Tony and Grammy Awards. He also served as an executive producer on the hit film starring John Travolta. They teamed up again on Broadway for Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, which he also directed, and Catch Me If You Can, which received a Tony nomination for Best Musical. For their original songs on NBC's musical drama SMASH, Scott & Marc were nominated for two Emmy Awards, a Grammy and a Golden Globe. On SMASH they have composed songs for Jennifer Hudson, Uma Thurman, Bernadette Peters, and Liza Minnelli. Their original score for the Marilyn Monroe musical Bombshell was
released on Sony Records. Scott co wrote the lyrics to Charlie and Chocolate Factory directed by Sam Mendes, which played to sold out houses at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London's West End. For Patti LuPone, Scott has created and directed two Broadway shows, three recordings and three sold-out Carnegie Hall concerts. At La Mama, Scott conceived and directed Jukebox Jackie starring Justin Vivian Bond, Cole Escola, Steel Burkhardt and Bridget Everett. He collaborated with Shaiman on new songs for Disney's Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall. He and Shaiman received on Oscar nomination for the song "The Place Where Lost Things Go", featured in the film.

David is a playwright. His plays include The Events, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, Monster in the Hall, Midsummer, Dunsinane, Yellow Moon, Damascus, Outlying Islands, The American Pilot, San Diego, Pyrenees, The Cosmonaut's Last Message, Dr, Korczcak's Example, The Architect, and Europe. David's adaptation's include The Suppliant Women, The Father, The Lorax, Lanark, Creditors, and Caligula. In 1990, he co-founded Suspect Culture Theatre Co., for whom he wrote Timeless, Mainstream & 8000M. Since 2016, David has been the Artistic Director of The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.
Things are falling from the ceiling!
Ropes, pulleys, and counterweights are used by stage crew to move curtains, lights, scenery, stage effects, and sometimes people, on stage. This is called a fly system or theatrical rigging system.
how are large objects moved around?
Air casters hooked up to compressed air tanks, are used to raise and lower large set pieces to help move them on stage. Air brakes are also used for securing large set pieces and preventing the wheels from moving.
BEHIND THE magic
WHAT WAS THAT FLASH?!
For some magical moments on stage you may see a small flash of light. This is because of flash paper, flash cotton, and flint on the actor’s fingers.
Flash paper is made from nitrocellulose and burns instantly, leaving no smoke or ash!

Fog, haze, pyrotechnics, projections, lights, actor entrances, sound effects, and even disco balls, are all elements that stage management cues throughout the show!

We have a moving circular platform on our stage that is controlled by our tech crew. This is called a revolve!

What’s the best part about playing the iconic role of Charlie Bucket?
How did you prepare for the role of Charlie Bucket?
I studied both movies and read the book at school during independent reading time.
The best part is being able to hang out in a World of Pure Imagination!
I read almost all the Roald Dahl books when I was younger, so the character of Charlie is very familiar to me. I also watched my favourite movie version, the 1971 Gene Wilder one!
He’s constantly curious and amazed by the magic and imagination – and I feel the exact same way about being in this production! I get to experience the wonder and magic of the Chocolate Factory as both an actor, and Charlie!
If you could invent your own crazy candy, what would it be, and what would it do when someone eats it? I would invent bubble gum that never loses its flavour! I would invent a biscuit that could change your hair colour. I love when people have pretty dyed hair, so maybe the different flavours give you different colours. Personally, I would eat a strawberry flavoured one to turn my hair pink any day!
If you could bring one item from WONKA’S factory into the real world, what would it be, and how would you use it?
Definitely the marshmallow peeps that fly! I love birds, and my friends love birds, so how great would it be to have a cute marshmallow-bird friend? I would bring the Lickable Wallpaper into the real world. I would give the homeless endless amounts of Lickable Wallpaper so they would have something flavourful, fun, and exciting to taste – when they don't have many options in this world.
What message do you hope the Grand’s audience takes away from your portrayal of Charlie? The idea that you should never stop dreaming. I want people to see that you should never give up on a dream, no matter how old you are, or what other people think. I hope the audience walks away with a real sense of magic and pure imagination!

an historic gift On March 9, 2017 the Grand Theatre announced an historic donation from Helen and Andy Spriet, philanthropic leaders in London who committed $1,000,000 to support the work of the theatre. This donation marks the largest individual gift in Grand Theatre history and in the arts community in London.
In recognition of this investment, the Grand Theatre main stage was renamed the Spriet Stage.
