A pastor, scholar, and activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the most influential leaders in history, thanks to his lifelong dedication to fighting racial prejudice and advancing the rights of Black Americans.

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, King rose from a Baptist minister to a prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and ‘60s, playing a pivotal role in ending racial segregation in the United States. He worked closely with political leaders to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, as well as the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which outlawed long-held discriminatory voting practices. King achieved these milestones and more by preaching nonviolent protest and peaceful civil disobedience, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

When King was tragically assassinated on April 4, 1968, he left the mourning nation with a great deal of wisdom to remember him by. Dr, King’s powerful speeches, books, sermons, and letters are full of words and messages that continue to inspire generations of people. Rev. Dr. Victor Hickson Proudly Presents Holy Bible College as an Educational Resource

Dr. Victor Hickson is a man of God who truly and absolutely trusts God. It is that trust and unwavering faith that has guided him throughout his life. Since being ordained in November of 1988 at the age of 26, Hickson has moved forward knowing that God would guide his every move as long as he stayed focused on Him. God has taken him on a journey that included the early wisdom and influence of his grandfather, Mr. Johnny B. Hickson, who would often speak on the importance of education by saying, “If I had an education the sky would be the limit.” That comment found its way deep into the soul of Dr. Victor Hickson. Little did he know that one day God would give him the opportunity to bless others with an education through the establishment of Holy Bible College.

As pastor of Full Deliverance Baptist Church in Florida City, Hickson and his congregation have operated with faithful service to God and to the community. With a background in business he is a man who knows the value of being prepared for effective service. For many years God placed it in his heart to establish a Bible College. On several occasions doors would appear to open only to have the opportunity not to materialize. Hickson did not despair but knew this was an indication that God was still working on his behalf. His faith was rewarded as God fulfilled his desire in an unexpected way by presenting the opportunity to establish the fully accredited Holy Bible College at Full Deliverance.

We recently had the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Hickson all that Holy Bible College has to offer to the Body of Christ:

DR. HICKSON: It is a pleasure to speak with you today regarding Holy Bible College. This is such exciting news for the community. Tell me a little bit about Holy Bible College?

DR. HICKSON: Holy Bible College is a fully accredited digital online school that prepares students to fulfill the Great Commission by showing the path and principles to have a deeper and closer relationship with God.

TGT: What about the student that likes the traditional classroom setting?

DR. HICKSON: We also have a campus located at Full Deliverance Baptist Church at 101 S. Redland Road in Florida City

TGT: What is the mission of Holy Bible College?

DR: HICKSON: Holy Bible College exists to fulfill the Great Commission by educating and empowering students in sound Biblical principals to live out the Word of God.

TGT: What is the vision of HBC?

DR. HICKSON: The vision of Holy Bible College is to fulfill its mission through innovative technology, utilizing online education and discussion forums. HBC will also fulfill its mission with Spirit-filled professors and hands-on practical experiences.

TGT: What are your pillars?

TGT: Tell me a little more about the accreditation?

DR. HICKSON: Accrediting Commission International is an international accrediting commission recognized to grant degrees at the Associate, Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate levels.

TGT: What is ACI’s objective?

DR. HICKSON: It’s primary objective is the encouragement and maintenance of sound scholarship and the highest academic achievement in the areas of private education.

ACI is a non-governmental body and makes no claim to be connected with the government.

TGT: Okay, what about the individual that does not want to take a degree program? You have some individuals that are not really interested in a Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorates, but still want to study God’s word.

DR. HICKSON: That’s a great question. Holy Bible College offers two types of curriculums that will meet the needs of those individuals that are not interested in a degree program.

The first one is the Directed Learning program and it’s designed for believers and none-believers. The individual can learn Gods word, apply it and grow! ( Learn, Apply and Grow!)

The second program we offer is called the Certificate Program and that is designed for church members and ministry leaders.

TGT : Dr. Hickson, did you just say that the Directed Learning program is designed for non-believers also? That sounds interesting, because I personally never heard of a Bible College offering courses for a non-believer?

Please tell me a little bit more about this program?

DR. HICKSON: Its designed for an individual that wants to get deeper in Gods word.

• Study a certain subject

• Preparing for preaching

• Devotional time

• Non-believers that are working on an essay for school, research end times prophecy, salvation, etc.

TGT: If I wanted to register for the Directed Learning program, do I have to go through the enrollment process to begin the courses?

DR. HICKSON: You will only need to provide an email address and your full name.

TGT: What is the cost per course?

DR. HICKSON: Its only $50 per course.

TGT: Tell me a little bit about the Certificate programs.

DR. HICKSON: The certificate program is designed for church members and ministry leaders. If you are a counselor, deacon, youth leader, usher, worship leader, missionary, pastor, I highly recommend completing a certificate program.

TGT: Can we talk about pricing, if you don’t mind, let’s start with the Directed Learning program. What is the registration fee for the Directed Learning program?

DR. HICKSON: There is no registration fee for the Directed Learning program.

TGT: Are there any other fees associated with the Directed Learning program.

DR. Hickson: No other fees. Registration is free and each course is an average of $50 and the student can download it immediately.

TGT: So, a student can register, purchase the course and get started the same day?

DR. HICKSON: Yes, in a matter of minutes they can get started.

TGT: Is there a registration fee for the certificate programs?

DR. HICKSON: Yes, the admission and registration fee for the Certificate program is only $19 a month, if you choose our automatic payment plan.

TGT: Wait, only $19 a month, but what’s the total amount for the admission and registration fee?

DR. HICKSON: The total amount for the admission and registration fee is only $149 if paid in full. If you choose to use our automatic payment plan, the total will be $190.

TGT: Do you offer the automatic payment plan for the degree programs also?

DR. HICKSON Yes, we do. For the associate program the admission and registration for the Associate program is only $28 a month. The Bachelor’s Degree program is $39, Masters is 59 and the Doctorate is $69 a month.

TGT: How much are the courses?

DR. HICKSON: The average course is $50 and most of our courses will include the eBook.

TGT: What would be the total cost of the certificate program?

DR. HICKSON: I will use the Basic Leadership Training course as an example: It consists of three courses: Basic Bible Doctrine, New Testament Survey and The Old Testament Survey, Part 1.

Registration fee is $149 and each course is $49, totaling $296. The Associate Degree is $249 to register and $980 for 20 courses, totaling at $980.

TGT: I see that one of the benefits of Holy Bible College is paying for each course when you are ready.

DR. HICKSON: The student gets to study anytime anywhere, and it won’t be a financial strain.

What are the effects of not getting enough sleep?

Sleep deficiency doesn’t target one age group — it hap-

pens to children and adults alike. Stress, anxiety, narcolepsy and sleep apnea can all cause sleep deprivation. And that can lead to other problems. Some of the less-obvious effects of poor sleep? Obesity, an increased sense of pain and a weaker response to vaccines.

Chronic sleep deprivation may also increase your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

“Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality can have a direct impact on performance and behavior at school in children,” says Dr. Gilyadov. “Poor sleep quality includes frequent nighttime awakenings.”

So, how can you sleep better?

Hack your sleep and wake up refreshed with a few tweaks:

Set a routine. Get up and go to bed at the same time daily. Even on weekends.

Get up and at ’em. While you’re awake, add movement to your day. “Spending time outside and exercising are great ways to get a better night’s rest,” says Dr. Gilyadov. Both activities help lower stress levels, which directly impacts your quality of sleep.

Don’t sleep too much. If you’ve had enough sleep, don’t sleep more — because oversleeping isn’t good for you, either. It can raise your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Stick to that sleep schedule mentioned above.

Turn off your phone. Put the phone away at least an hour before bed. Exposure to blue light can shorten your slumber.

Benefits Of Getting Up Early

One way to get off to a good start on keeping New Year’s resolutions is to develop the habit of getting up early to start your day.

Waking up early isn’t necessarily wired into all of our systems — especially, for instance, if there is a particularly bingeable show streaming that week. Still, there have been myriad studies that suggest that early birds can be healthier, more productive, and in many cases, even happier than those who enjoy burning the midnight oil.

The reasons are manifold, and range from the practical to the philosophical. For one, there are often more daylight hours available to early risers, meaning it can be easier to get more done in a span of 24 hours. For another, there’s the fact that waking up with the sun is the way most of our circadian rhythms are intended to operate, so early risers are more attuned to the natural cycles of the earth.

Suffice it to say, there are plenty of reasons to stop hitting the snooze button and just get up. Still, it’s not always easy to break our stubborn habits. These quotes serve as a reminder of the benefits of being an early bird. After all, as Benjamin Franklin once said, “Early to bed

and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH

A lot of factors play a role in staying healthy. In turn, good health can decrease your risk of developing certain conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, some cancers, and injuries. Learn what you can do to maintain your and your family’s health.

Path to improved health

Eat healthy.

What you eat is closely linked to your health. Balanced nutrition has many benefits. By making healthier food choices, you can prevent or treat some conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. A healthy diet can help you lose weight and lower your cholesterol, as well.

Get regular exercise.

Exercise can help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer. It can help treat depression, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure. People who exercise also get injured less often. Routine exercise can make you feel better and keep your weight under control. Try to be active for 30 to 60 minutes about 5 times a week. Remember, any amount of exercise is better than none.

Lose weight if you’re overweight. Many Americans are overweight. Carrying too much weight increases your risk for several health conditions. These include:

high blood pressure

high cholesterol type 2 diabetes heart disease

stroke

some cancers

gallbladder disease

Being overweight also can lead to weight-related injuries. A common problem is arthritis in the weight-bearing joints, such as your spine, hips, or knees. There are several things you can try to help you lose weight and keep it off.

Protect your skin.

Sun exposure is linked to skin cancer. This is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It’s best to limit your time spent in the sun. Be sure to wear protective clothing and hats when you are outside. Use sunscreen year-round on exposed skin, like your face and hands. It protects your skin and helps prevent skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. It should be at least an SPF 15. Do not sunbathe or use tanning booths.

Don’t smoke or use tobacco. Smoking and tobacco use are harmful habits. They can cause heart disease and mouth, throat, or lung cancer. They also are leading factors of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The sooner you quit, the better.

Limit how much alcohol you drink.

Men should have no more than 2 drinks a day. Women should have no more than 1 drink a day. One drink is equal to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. Too much alcohol can damage your liver. It can cause some cancers, such as throat, liver, or pancreas cancer. Alcohol abuse also contributes to deaths from car wrecks, murders, and suicides.

Things to consider

In addition to the factors listed above, you should make time for

whole body health. Visit your doctors for regular checkups. This includes your primary doctor, as well as your dentist and eye doctor. Let your health benefits and preventive care services work for you. Make sure you know what your health insurance plan involves. Preventive care can detect disease or prevent illness before they start. This includes certain doctor visits and screenings.

You need to make time for breast health. Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women. Men can get breast cancer, too. Talk to your doctor about when you should start getting mammograms. You may need to start screening early if you have risk factors, such as family history. One way to detect breast cancer is to do a monthly self-exam.

Women should get routine pap smears, as well. Women ages 21 to 65 should get tested every 3 years. This may differ if you have certain conditions or have had your cervix removed.

Ask your doctor about other cancer screenings. Adults should get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. Your doctor may want to check for other types of cancer. This will depend on your risk factors and family history.

Keep a list of current medicines you take. You also should stay up to date on shots, including getting an annual flu shot. Adults need a Td booster every 10 years. Your doctor may substitute it with Tdap. This also protects against whooping cough (pertussis). Women who are pregnant need the Tdap vaccine. People who are in close contact with babies should get it, as well.
