Ring proposal model

Material: brass and brass mesh. Using 0.5mm brass sheet to create 4 rings, a textured mesh ring is trapped between them. A ring stretcher then enlarges the inside ring, holding the mesh in place securely with tension. 1.2mm band width

Material sample - showing how the vertical edges of the mesh are secured by folding twice; creating a secure seam and avoiding sharpness.

Brooch - proposal: Silver and oxidised copper Alternative materials: could be silver or gold plated. This brooch features a curved form to lift the surface of the material away from the body, allowing light to shine through it, reflecting light with the movement of the wearer. The transparency also allows colours of the wearers clothes to influence the colour that the brooch appears.

Hammer textured fine copper mesh, riveted into a silver frame using 0.8mm silver rivets. The frame is then gently polished and curved. Silver frame with brooch back components is then soldered onto the back of the curved form, before oxidising and gentle polishing to heighten the reflective elements to the piece.

Brooch proposal: Silver, copper mesh (oxidised) 50mm x 80mm x 20mm Tubes joined together onto textured silver backing. Could be lifted off the surface of the silver backing using wire posts, to allow more light behind the tubes.

of proposed catch

Model using components from previous finished necklaces. The proposed necklace would be composed of identical 40mm components, allowing the necklace to sit on the neck evenly.

Necklace proposal : silver plated copper mesh, sterling silver. Alternative materials: silver and copper mesh, oxidised - referencing more directly the shadows and drawings in my primary research.

Fastening detail: held with tension. Component test piece: silver tube and copper mesh. In the proposed design the raw mesh edges shown above will be resolved by folding the mesh prior to assembly, creating a smooth edge that won’t catch on clothing.

The brass is polished in parts and at other points left matte. The surface is untreated meaning that it will tarnish over time, and the varying finishes will tarnish at different rates. This evolving finish of the necklace is a reference to the passage of time, and changeability within nature. As well as its visual qualities I chose brass as it is a relatively ethical metal, as it is an alloy typically made from recycled materials.
