INTERNSHIP SUCCESS
Program provides immersive experience to record participants.
T
he Garrett Internship Program (GIP) has proven that The Garrett Companies can not only compete with industry leaders with our products and services, but also with our career development programs. A brand-new class of twenty interns has come aboard for the summer; the program’s largest class yet (eleven college interns and nine high school interns). While our competitors were canceling internship programs altogether in 2020, the GIP was able to continue, and flourish.
In 2021, the college internship program employs two property management interns (Alea Tooley & Jordan Leverett), four construction interns (Earl Bowling, Jimmy Holinger, Nathan Witty, & Ivan Covarrubias), one development intern (Jake Snead), one preconstruction intern (Francisco Cena Zavala), one investments intern (Connor Murdock), one accounting intern (Riley Shives), and one landscape architect intern (Conner Pierce). The high school internship program has seen growth from last year
as well. With nine high school interns this year; The Garrett Companies’ program provides a beneficial experience for students who may not know exactly where they want to be once they enter the workplace. The program gives participants a glimpse inside multiple departments and specialties, allowing participants to spark interest in various fields of study. Not only has the GIP grown in the number of interns it employs, but it has also expanded the program features. With a guest speaker series,

Sierra Hughes; Detail-oriented with a creative flair
S
ierra Hughes joined The Garrett Companies in January of 2019 as a Preconstruction Associate. Sierra has been in the construction industry since graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 2015 and hasn’t looked back. Sierra wasn’t always planning to go into her field but after studying engineering and honing her skills, Sierra landed in construction management. Right out of college, Sierra took an opportunity to move out to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for one of the nation’s largest electrical contractors where her focus was on multi-family housing. After spending three years in California and meeting her now husband, they decided to move back to the Midwest to be closer to family. Upon their return, Sierra worked for a local electrical contractor for five years prior to starting her journey with Garrett. Now, Sierra starts each day off taking care of her dogs and making herself breakfast. According to Sierra, working from home has been “life changing.” Now that she doesn’t have a long commute, she loves to use this ex-
tra time at home as an opportunity to spend more time on herself. This lifestyle change has led her to an overall happier and healthier life. Sierra shared she is eating healthier, working out more, and spending more time with family. No wonder she is always so full of life! Sierra loves that each day is different in her role. Her days are filled with constant communication with potential subcontractors, performing take-offs, creating project budgets, participating in various meetings, and so much more. Being detail oriented and someone who loves budgeting, her role has been a natural fit. The preconstruction team has grown quite a bit since Sierra joined in 2019, but they remain close and supportive to one another. The tight knit team has been very busy, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish this year and beyond. The Garrett Companies is grateful for Sierra’s hard work, dedication, and her creative in-house comic artistry. Check out the cartoon on the back page to see some of Sierra’s handiwork.

Over the past year, many people discovered a new hobby while passing the time in quarantine. From bread-baking to painting, from assembling 1000 piece puzzles to inventing at home work outs, our team found several ways to spend newfound free time. For Ken Koziol, it didn’t take long to find his quarantine Ken Koziol hobby. By combining two of the things that he finds interesting, astronomy and photography, Ken soon found joy in seeing what he and his camera were able to produce. Like most, Ken began with a limited amount of gear. But as his interest for the hobby increased, Ken began to invest in more professional equipment to assist in taking his photos to new heights (no pun intended). To take some of the incredible photos, Ken employs the help of a telescope that has a camera attachment. This allows for Ken to get some
very detailed photography of galaxies that, at a distance of hundreds of millions of light years away, cannot be seen by the naked eye. This process is aided by use of a star tracker that rotates with the apparent movement of the stars to aid with long exposure shots. Sitting on a tripod, his camera can take hundreds of photos per night that he uses to stack and edit in post-processing. Light is not your friend when shooting astrophotography. Light pollution from growing cities makes it increasingly difficult to find dark skies. Ken will often set up at home, on a golf course, or drive south far away from Indianapolis lights to get the best conditions. Clear, cloudless skies are also needed when it comes to shooting astrophotography. In order to pick the best nights for shooting, Ken uses apps on his phone that can determine the cloud cover, the moon phases, and nights that specific galaxies and star formations are best seen.

Garrett Alumni Group events, and department workshops, the program has become a priceless opportunity for the interns selected to participate. With The Garrett Companies being headquartered in Greenwood, Indiana, participation was previously limited to Indianapolis-area based interns. But this year, with the help of some of the Colorado-based employees, the GIP was able to accept four Colorado-based interns. This allows for TGC to grow the internship program into a multistate program, expanding our reach to attract and develop the best talent across the nation. Internships have proven to be increasingly vital to the success of college students in developing their careers, and to the talent acquisition goals of our company. With much of the national work-
force slowly coming back to the office, and some not coming back at all, college students are finding it increasingly difficult to secure internships where they can learn the vital skills of communication, teammate collaboration, and interpersonal professionalism. TGC’s award winning culture creates an environment where young students can learn from the very best example. At the same time, The Garrett Companies’ rapid growth and expansion to new markets demands non-traditional methods to attract and develop top talent. On July 1st, Garrett Residential took over management of Lift at Jordan Creek in West Des Moines, IA. After being managed by a third party company for the first year of operations, Garrett Residential team members obtained the necessary accreditation in affordable housing to manage the community in-house. The Garrett Companies has recently been recognized as a Best Place to Work by the National Apartment Association, in the Top Ten Best Workplaces by the Indianapolis Star, and a Best Workplace for the 4th year in a row by INC Magazine.
