welcome I
The Best Investment You’ll Ever Make
f you asked me what has had the greatest influence on my life, it wouldn’t be a business book, a mentor, or even the first company I started. It would be my mother. My mother, Irene Neonakis, spent her career teaching French. To her, language wasn’t just about memorizing verbs or passing a test. It was about understanding another culture, another way of thinking, another way of seeing the world. She believed education wasn’t something that ended when you graduated. It was something that stayed with you for life. I grew up with a brother and two sisters, and all four of us heard the same message over and over: learn as much as you can, stay curious, and get out into the world. Looking back, I don’t think we appreciated it as kids. While some families planned vacations around amusement parks, ours usually involved castles, museums, ancient ruins, churches, or walking through old cities where history seemed to be around every corner. My mother wanted us to understand where civilizations came from, why cultures were different, and how people lived outside our own little corner of the world. At the time, I’m sure we complained more than once. Today, I’m grateful for every minute of it. Those experiences taught us that the world
is much bigger than ourselves. They taught us that there is usually more than one way to solve a problem, more than one perspective on almost every issue, and that listening is often more valuable than talking. I didn’t realize it then, but those lessons have helped me in business every single day. After more than twenty years working with f ranchise companies, I’ve noticed something interesting. The very best f ranchise organizations never stop teaching. Yes, they teach people how to run the business. But the great ones do much more than that. They educate. They bring f ranchisees together to share ideas. They encourage owners to learn f rom one another. They invest in leadership, communication, technology, operations, finance, and personal growth. They understand that if their people keep getting better, the business will too. Learning isn’t an event. It’s a culture. The same is true at home. Now that I have children of my own, I find myself thinking about the things my mother gave us that didn’t cost very much but turned out to be priceless. Curiosity. Respect for other cultures. A love of history. The confidence to walk into a place you’ve

never been before and strike up a conversation with someone whose life is completely different from yours. Those are gifts. Like many parents, I want my children to succeed professionally. Of course I do. But more than that, I want them to become interesting people. I want them to read books that challenge them. I want them to visit countries where they don’t speak the language. I want them to wander through museums even if they don’t understand every painting. I want them to stand where history happened instead of only reading about it. Travel has a way of reminding you how much you still have to learn. And that’s a good thing. All of this feels even more important today because we’re entering an era shaped by artificial intelligence. AI is changing business at an incredible pace. It can summarize meetings, analyze contracts, write reports, answer questions, and perform tasks that used to take hours. Every business leader should learn how to use these tools because they are going to make us all more productive. But AI also changes what becomes truly valuable. If information is available to everyone in seconds, then information alone isn’t the
JUDGMENT IS. CURIOSITY IS. CREATIVITY IS. CHARACTER IS. advantage anymore. The ability to connect ideas, understand people, communicate clearly, and make good decisions becomes even more important. That’s why I believe a liberal arts education matters now more than ever. History teaches perspective. Literature teaches empathy. Philosophy teaches you to ask better questions. Art develops creativity. Learning another language teaches patience and helps you appreciate that the world doesn’t revolve around your own experiences.
Those subjects don’t compete with technology—they make us better at using it. Sometimes I think we’ve become too focused on asking young people, “What job will this degree get you?” A better question might be, “What kind of person will this education help you become?” Business skills can be learned. Technology will continue to evolve. But a curious mind lasts a lifetime. As I get older, I realize my mother wasn’t just preparing four children for school or even for careers. She was preparing us to be lifelong learners. That may be the greatest lesson she ever taught us. If we can pass even a small part of that on to our own children—to stay curious, to travel, to appreciate history, to respect different cultures, and to never stop learning—we’ll have given them something far more valuable than money. We’ll have given them a way to navigate whatever future awaits them. And that’s an education that never goes out of style.

THE EDUCATION ISSUE
Education and Children’s Franchises: A Strong Investment Opportunity by Seth Lederman, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company educational services in the U.S. including tutoring, after‑school programs, and early learning centers, is projected to reach $2.7 trillion in 2025. And more than half of U.S. parents (52%) use some kind of supplemental education services outside of their child’s schooling. Clearly, a children’s educational franchise is a solid financial bet.
E
ducation and childrenfocused franchises have emerged as one of the most resilient and rewarding sectors in franchising. As parents increasingly seek supplemental learning opportunities, enrichment programs, tutoring services, childcare solutions, and specialized developmental programs for their children, demand for these businesses continues to grow. Unlike many industries that are vulnerable to economic fluctuations, educational services are often viewed by families as essential investments in their children's future. , The market for

WHY EDUCATION FRANCHISES ARE A STRONG BUSINESS PROPOSITION One of the primary reasons education and children's franchises continue to thrive is the consistent demand for their services. Parents have long demonstrated a willingness to invest in programs that help their children succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Whether through tutoring, STEM education, early childhood development, language instruction, arts programs, or specialized learning support, these services address needs that exist regardless of broader economic conditions. The educational landscape has also evolved significantly over the past decade. Learning disruptions during the
pandemic highlighted achievement gaps and reinforced the importance of supplemental education. As a result, many families now actively seek tutoring, academic enrichment, and skills-development programs to help students stay competitive. At the same time, increasing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has created growing demand for coding, robotics, and technologyfocused learning centers. Demographic trends further strengthen the business case. Families continue to prioritize educational opportunities, and many communities face shortages of quality childcare and enrichment programs. This combination of strong consumer demand and limited supply creates favorable conditions for franchise growth. Additionally, many education franchises operate on recurring revenue models. Students often attend programs weekly, monthly, or throughout an entire school year, creating predictable income streams that can help franchise owners build longterm stability.
ADVANTAGES OF EDUCATION AND CHILDREN'S FRANCHISES One of the greatest advantages of investing in an education franchise is access to a proven curriculum and operational framework. Developing educational content independently can require years of research, testing, and refinement. Franchise systems provide owners with established lesson plans, instructional materials, technology platforms, and teaching methodologies that have already demonstrated success. Many entrepreneurs are drawn to education franchises because they offer the opportunity to make a positive difference in children's lives. Unlike some businesses that focus primarily on transactions, educational franchises often build long-term relationships with families and become trusted community resources. Helping students improve academic performance, gain confidence, develop new skills, or prepare for future careers can provide a strong sense of purpose alongside financial success. Technology has expanded the opportunities available to education franchise owners. Many brands now offer both inperson and virtual instruction, allowing businesses to serve broader geographic areas and provide greater flexibility to families. MULTIPLE REVENUE OPPORTUNITIES Education franchises often benefit from diversified
“A CHILD IS NOT A VASE TO BE FILLED, BUT A FIRE TO BE LIT.” — FRANCOIS RABELAIS revenue streams. In addition to regular classes or tutoring sessions, many brands offer: • Summer camps • Holiday programs • Test preparation courses • After-school programs • Workshops and special events • Online learning options • Private instruction This variety can help smooth seasonal fluctuations and increase overall profitability.. Although no business is completely immune to economic downturns, educational services often demonstrate resilience because parents tend to prioritize spending that benefits their children's development and future success. Families may reduce discretionary spending in other areas before cutting investments in education or childcare.
• Household income levels • School performance data • Existing competitors A market with a large concentration of families and strong educational engagement may provide more favorable growth opportunities. Not all education franchises operate the same way. Some focus on academic tutoring, while others specialize in childcare, STEM programs, arts education, language learning, or youth sports. Prospective franchisees should consider which model aligns best with their interests, experience, and local demand. Understanding the franchise's support systems, training programs, technology infrastructure, and marketing assistance is equally important. Educational businesses rely heavily on quality instructors and staff. Recruiting, training,
WHAT PROSPECTIVE FRANCHISEES SHOULD CONSIDER While education and children's franchises offer significant opportunities, prospective owners should carefully evaluate several factors before investing. Success often depends on local demographics. Before purchasing a franchise, research: • Population growth trends • Number of families with school-aged children WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | JULY 2026
19
and retaining qualified employees can be one of the biggest challenges for franchise owners. Before investing, franchisees should assess local labor availability and understand the qualifications required by the franchise system. Strong hiring and retention strategies are often critical to long-term success. Businesses serving children may face specific regulations related to safety, staffing, facilities, and licensing. Childcare-focused franchises, in particular, often have extensive compliance requirements that vary by state and municipality. Understanding these obligations before opening can help avoid costly surprises. SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL MUSIC One emerging example of the growth potential within the education and children's franchise sector is Simply Delightful Music, a music education brand that began franchising in 2024 and has quickly gained traction among entrepreneurs seeking a business with both purpose and scalability. Simply Delightful Music has differentiated itself through an
inclusive approach that serves students from six months old through adulthood, with approximately one-quarter of its students being adults and seniors. The company teaches all musical genres rather than focusing solely on rock or classical music and emphasizes private one-onone instruction, helping drive an impressive monthly student retention rate of 94%. The membership-based model, which typically includes four lessons per month, creates predictable recurring revenue for franchisees while providing consistency for students. Another key differentiator is the brand's proprietary My Musicology software platform, which streamlines scheduling, communication, and studio management for students, instructors, and owners. This technology supports a semiabsentee ownership model, allowing franchisees to focus on operations rather than dayto-day instruction. Franchise owners do not need a musical background; instead, the company seeks individuals with strong work ethics, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to community involvement. Studios typically range from 1,200 to 1,900 square feet with six to 10 lesson rooms, providing flexibility in real estate selection and keeping startup costs relatively manageable. The brand also places a strong emphasis on supporting instructors through competitive compensation and ongoing professional development, recognizing that talented teachers are central to student success. Comprehensive franchise
support includes site selection assistance, training in Columbus, Ohio, recruiting and onboarding guidance, management resources, and a robust pre-sales program designed to enroll students before opening. As a result, many new franchisees can approach or achieve breakeven performance by the time of their grand opening. Education and children's franchises occupy a unique position within the franchise industry. They combine strong market demand, recurring revenue opportunities, meaningful community impact, and long-term growth potential. As parents continue seeking ways to support their children's academic achievement, personal development, and future success, the need for quality educational services is likely to remain strong. For entrepreneurs who are passionate about helping children learn and grow, an education franchise can offer more than a business opportunity—it can provide the chance to build a successful enterprise while making a lasting difference in the lives of families and communities. THE EDUCATION ISSUE
Why My Generation Needs More Than a Degree by Alex Neonakis, Writer, NYU Class of 2030
N
ext year, I will walk onto the campus of New York University as a freshman. Like millions of students my age, I am excited, nervous, optimistic, and uncertain all at the same time. The world my generation is inheriting is very different from the one our parents entered. We have grown up through a global pandemic, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, political division, economic uncertainty, and a constant stream of information delivered through our phones twenty-four hours a day. We are told that education is the key to success, yet many students question whether the traditional path will lead to the future they want. For most of us, college is still important. Education provides knowledge, critical thinking skills, discipline, and exposure to new ideas. It introduces us to people from different backgrounds and challenges us to see the world from perspectives beyond our own. A university degree remains one of the most valuable investments a young person can make. At the same time, many students are asking difficult questions. Will there be jobs when we graduate? Will artificial intelligence
24
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
replace entire professions? Will we be able to afford homes? Can we achieve financial independence? Will the opportunities available to previous generations still exist for us?
These are not abstract concerns. They are conversations happening every day in classrooms, coffee shops, and group chats across the country. The younger generation has incredible ambition,
but we also face significant uncertainty. According to many studies, Gen Z places a higher value on flexibility, purpose, and entrepreneurship than previous generations. We want careers, but we also want freedom. We want financial security, but we also want meaningful work. We are less interested in simply climbing a corporate ladder and more interested in creating opportunities for ourselves. That is why education alone is no longer enough. The students who will thrive in the coming decades will be those who combine classroom learning with realworld experience. Leadership positions, internships, volunteer work, athletics, student government, clubs, entrepreneurial ventures, and community service all play a critical role in personal development. These activities teach lessons that cannot always be learned in a lecture hall. Sports teach resilience. Student organizations teach leadership. Volunteer work teaches empathy. Part-time jobs teach accountability. Starting a small business teaches problem solving, sales, marketing, and risk management. These experiences help young people develop confidence and practical skills that employers and investors increasingly value. One area that deserves more attention from colleges, universities, and young professionals is franchising.
For many students, franchising is rarely discussed as a career path. Yet it may be one of the most powerful bridges between education and entrepreneurship. Franchising allows aspiring business owners to operate independently while benefiting from established systems, training, support, and proven business models. Instead of starting entirely from scratch, franchisees can leverage the experience and infrastructure of organizations that have already solved many of the challenges new businesses face. For young people, this creates unique opportunities. A student can work for a franchise during college and learn operations, marketing, customer service, hiring, and financial management. A recent graduate can pursue a management role within a franchise system and gain experience running a business unit. Some ambitious entrepreneurs may even become franchise owners earlier in life than previous generations ever imagined. Most importantly, franchising provides education beyond the classroom. Every successful franchise teaches business fundamentals. Owners learn how to manage people, analyze financial statements, develop marketing strategies, create customer experiences, and build community relationships. These are practical skills that remain valuable regardless of industry or economic conditions. As I prepare for college,
I believe my generation's greatest strength is adaptability. We are entering a world that is changing faster than any generation before us has experienced. The careers that will exist twenty years from now may not even exist today. That reality should not scare us. It should motivate us. Education will always matter. Knowledge will always matter. But the future belongs to those who combine education with action. The students who seek leadership opportunities, embrace entrepreneurship, build relationships, and gain real-world experience will be the ones who create the next generation of businesses and innovations. College is not the finish line. It is the starting point. For young people looking toward the future, the goal should not simply be earning a degree. It should be developing the skills, character, and confidence necessary to create opportunity wherever it can be found. Franchising offers one of the clearest paths to doing exactly that. My generation is hopeful. We are ambitious. We are ready to work. What we need are more opportunities to turn education into experience and experience into success. That is where the future begins. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alex Neonakis is a high school student who loves business, history, basketball, and butter chicken. Checkmate for Screen Time:
How Story Time Chess Is Teaching the Next Generation to Think by Steve Sparks, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
W
alk into almost any restaurant today and you'll see the same thing: kids staring at tablets, phones, and screens. Technology has created incredible opportunities, but many parents are asking the same question: How do we help our children develop focus, critical thinking, and confidence in an increasingly distracted world? One franchise is answering that question in a unique way. Story Time Chess is transforming the way children learn one of the world's oldest games by turning chess lessons into engaging stories and adventures that kids actually enjoy. Instead of memorizing complicated rules, children learn through characters, storytelling, and imaginative play, making the game approachable for students as young as three years old. But this isn't really a story about chess. It's a story about helping children develop life skills that will serve them for decades. MORE THAN A GAME Every move in chess requires a decision. Players must think ahead,

evaluate options, consider consequences, and adapt when circumstances change. Those same skills are essential in school, sports, business, and life. Research has long suggested connections between chess instruction and improved concentration, problem-solving ability, memory, and academic performance. Parents recognize these benefits, which is why enrichment
programs focused on critical thinking continue to grow in popularity. Story Time Chess has taken these proven benefits and packaged them into a format that children genuinely love. By combining storytelling with strategic thinking, the program removes the intimidation factor often associated with chess and replaces it with excitement and curiosity.
MEETING PARENTS WHERE THEY ARE Today's parents are investing more than ever in enrichment activities for their children. From STEM programs and coding camps to tutoring and music lessons, families are searching for educational experiences that provide meaningful development beyond the classroom. Story Time Chess fits perfectly into this growing trend. The program is offered through schools, after-school programs, community organizations, camps, and private classes, creating multiple avenues for growth while delivering real value to families. For many parents, the appeal isn't creating the next chess champion. It's helping their child learn patience, confidence, focus, and resilience. A MISSION-DRIVEN FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY For entrepreneurs seeking a business with purpose, Story Time Chess offers something unique: the ability to build a successful business while making a measurable impact on children's lives. Franchise owners aren't simply selling a service. They're helping children develop skills that can influence how they learn, think, and solve problems for years to come. That mission resonates strongly with educators, parents, and community leaders alike. As demand for educational enrichment continues to
rise, Story Time Chess is well-positioned to capitalize on a growing market while remaining true to its core mission. WHY THE TIMING IS RIGHT Parents today are increasingly focused on educational experiences that encourage real-world thinking rather than passive entertainment. At the same time, schools and community organizations continue searching for engaging enrichment programs that provide meaningful outcomes for students. Story Time Chess sits at the intersection of both trends. By making strategic thinking fun and accessible,
the company has created a program that appeals to children, parents, and educators alike. In a world filled with distractions, helping kids learn how to think may be one of the most valuable lessons of all. And for franchisees, that creates an opportunity that's about much more than business. It's about helping shape the next generation, one move at a time. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Steve Sparks is a franchise consultant with The Franchise Consulting Company and a father of two who is passionate about businesses that make a positive impact on families and communities. British Swim School: A Purpose-Driven Franchise Making Waves in Children’s Education by Bob Hays, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
T
he children’s education and enrichment sector continues to attract strong investor interest, especially in concepts that blend purpose-driven services with scalable business models. British Swim School stands out in this space—combining life-saving instruction, early childhood development, and a flexible, asset-light structure that supports long-term growth.
32
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
A MISSION-CENTERED EDUCATIONAL CONCEPT FOR CHILDREN British Swim School is far more than a swim lesson provider. Since 1981, the brand has been rooted in a mission to help children develop essential life skills through a gentle, safetyfirst approach. Its curriculum is designed specifically for early childhood learning, emphasizing confidence, comfort, and survival in the water.
Programs begin with infants as young as three months old, focusing on water acclimation, floating, breathing, and selfrescue before introducing stroke development. This progression reflects how young children learn best—through repetition, reassurance, and structured skill-building. Unlike traditional instruction that pushes technique too early,
British Swim School prioritizes safety and independence, preparing children for realworld situations. This mission is especially critical in the United States, where drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children. Swim lessons are not recreational extras; they are foundational safety education. British Swim School’s focus on early childhood development directly addresses this need. A PROVEN EDUCATIONAL MODEL PARENTS TRUST Parents increasingly seek enrichment programs that blend learning, structure, and meaningful outcomes. British Swim School meets this demand with a curriculum grounded in child-development principles and small-group instruction that supports individualized attention. Its structured pathway moves children through early water acclimation, survivalbased skills, and eventually stroke development as confidence grows. This stepby-step progression creates a predictable, reassuring experience for families. The program’s gentle, funfocused teaching style helps children overcome fear, build confidence, and form a positive lifelong relationship with water. Parents trust British Swim School because it blends education, safety, and emotional development—key priorities in today’s youth enrichment landscape.
STRONG UNIT ECONOMICS ROOTED IN EDUCATION DEMAND From an investment standpoint, British Swim School offers an attractive financial profile supported by consistent demand for children’s education and safety programs. Its asset-light model eliminates the need for facility construction or pool ownership, significantly reducing startup costs and barriers to entry. Recurring revenue from ongoing lessons creates predictable income, while streamlined operations and limited overhead support healthy margins. Because families often enroll children for extended periods— progressing through multiple levels—the model benefits from strong retention and long-term customer value. Franchisees can scale efficiently by adding multiple pool locations within their exclusive territories. This “expand within your territory” approach enables revenue growth without major capital investment. ASSET-LIGHT STRUCTURE: A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE FOR GROWTH British Swim School’s partnership-based, asset-light
model allows franchisees to operate in existing indoor pools within fitness centers, schools, hotels, and community facilities. By eliminating construction and maintenance costs, the model enables faster openings, supports flexible multi-location expansion, and creates mutually beneficial relationships with pool partners—all while keeping the focus on delivering highquality children’s education and water-safety instruction. For franchisees, this means lower risk, simpler operations, and more time to focus on staffing, quality, and community engagement. POSITIONED IN A GROWING CHILDREN’S EDUCATION MARKET The swim instruction industry is large, essential, and underpenetrated—especially in early childhood. Many children in the U.S. still lack access to formal swim education, creating a significant gap in water-safety skills. Parents cite safety as the primary reason for enrollment, and demand continues to rise WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | JULY 2026

as families prioritize structured, skill-building activities. British Swim School sits at the intersection of education, safety, and youth development. Its focus on early childhood learning aligns with broader parenting trends that emphasize confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. FLEXIBLE OWNERSHIP FOR EDUCATION-FOCUSED ENTREPRENEURS The franchise model accommodates a range of ownership styles, from hands-on operators to semiabsentee investors. No aquatics background is required; the franchisor provides comprehensive training and support. Owners can focus on team development, marketing, and community relationships while trained instructors deliver the curriculum. 34

A straightforward staffing model and centralized systems help streamline scheduling, enrollment, and operations— making the business both manageable and scalable. A GROWING BRAND WITH STRONG SUPPORT British Swim School operates hundreds of locations across North America and continues to expand rapidly. Backed by Buzz Franchise Brands, the company benefits from strong marketing, operational support, and strategic guidance. Its long-standing reputation, franchisee satisfaction, and mission-driven identity reinforce its leadership in children’s swim education. A PURPOSE-DRIVEN OPPORTUNITY IN CHILDREN’S ENRICHMENT British Swim School offers
a rare combination of financial opportunity and meaningful social impact. Franchisees are not just building businesses—they are delivering essential education that protects children and builds lifelong confidence. In a market where parents value safety, development, and enrichment, British Swim School is uniquely positioned for continued success. THE EDUCATION ISSUE
The New Education Ecosystem: Why Learning No Longer Stops When School Ends by Ozzie Grupenmager, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
HOW SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION IS EVOLVING FROM TUTORING INTO LONG-TERM SKILL DEVELOPMENT For many parents, education used to follow a simple formula. Children went to school, completed their homework, prepared for exams, and gradually moved through the educational system. Today, that formula is changing. Increasingly, parents view education not as something that happens only inside a classroom, but as an ongoing ecosystem designed to build confidence, develop critical skills, and prepare children 38
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
for an increasingly complex future. This shift is quietly transforming one of the fastest-evolving sectors within franchising: supplemental education. TUTORING IS NO LONGER REMEDIAL For years, tutoring carried a stigma. Many families associated it with students who were struggling academically or trying to catch up with classmates. That perception has changed dramatically. Today, supplemental education often begins long
before academic difficulties appear. Parents increasingly view enrichment programs as proactive investments rather than corrective measures. The goal is no longer simply improving grades. The goal is building stronger learners. This includes developing: • confidence • study habits • critical thinking • independent learning skills • long-term academic success As competition increases and educational expectations evolve, many families seek additional support systems that complement traditional schooling.
PARENTS ARE INVESTING EARLIER Another noticeable shift is timing. Parents are no longer waiting until middle school or high school to introduce enrichment programs. Many begin much earlier. They recognize that early exposure to structured learning environments can help children develop foundational skills that benefit them throughout their educational journey. This trend is helping expand the role supplemental education centers play within communities. PERSONALIZATION IS BECOMING ESSENTIAL One of the biggest changes within education is personalization. Children do not all learn the same way, at the same pace, or through the same methods. Families increasingly seek environments that can adapt to individual learning styles while maintaining structured academic standards. Concepts such as Best in Class Education Center reflect this evolution by combining structured academic programs with individualized learning approaches designed to build confidence and long-term success. This model aligns with a broader consumer trend that extends far beyond education itself: personalization. Consumers increasingly expect experiences tailored to their individual needs, and education is no exception. BUILDING CONFIDENCE BEYOND ACADEMICS One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding
“PARENTS ARE NO LONGER SEEKING BETTER GRADES—THEY ARE INVESTING IN STRONGER LEARNERS.” supplemental education is that it focuses exclusively on grades. In reality, many programs are increasingly focused on confidence. Confidence often becomes the bridge between knowledge and performance. Students who develop stronger confidence levels often become: • more engaged learners • better communicators • more willing to ask questions • more resilient when facing challenges These qualities frequently extend beyond the classroom. EDUCATION IS BECOMING A LIFELONG PROCESS Perhaps the biggest shift of all is philosophical. Education is no longer viewed as a finite process that ends with a diploma. Parents increasingly recognize that lifelong learning may become one of the most valuable skills children can develop. The world children will eventually enter is changing rapidly. Technology, artificial intelligence, and new industries continue to reshape the skills employers will value in the future. This reality is encouraging families to focus less on memorization and more on learning agility. The ability to adapt may become one of the greatest competitive advantages children can develop.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR FRANCHISING From a franchising perspective, education continues to be an attractive category because it addresses a long-term need rather than a temporary trend. Parents consistently prioritize investments that support their children’s future. Unlike many consumer categories, education often carries emotional value alongside practical value. Parents are not simply purchasing a service. They are investing in opportunity. THE BIGGER PICTURE The future of education will likely become increasingly collaborative. Traditional schools will remain central, but they may increasingly be supported by ecosystems of enrichment, personalized learning, and skill development programs that help children thrive. Education no longer stops when school ends. And that shift may define the next generation of learning. The Knowledge Economy: Embracing the Surge in Education and Child Enrichment Franchises by Ron Filian, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
T
he modern parenting landscape is defined by a singular, powerful motivation: a collective desire to give children every possible competitive advantage in an increasingly complex world. This drive has fundamentally reshaped the children’s service and education sectors, turning supplemental learning into a major growth category. For prospective business owners
42
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
looking at the franchising landscape, the youth and education market represents a remarkably resilient sector anchored by deep parental commitment and shifting institutional demands. Understanding the robust demand for these concepts requires a look at the modern educational climate. In recent years, public and private school classrooms have faced systemic challenges, including larger class sizes, standardized curriculum constraints, and widespread learning gaps in foundational subjects like mathematics and reading. Parents quickly realized that traditional schooling alone may not suffice to unlock a child’s full potential or guarantee university placement. Consequently, enrolling children in supplemental education programs has shifted from a reactive measure for struggling students into a proactive strategy for enrichment and acceleration. Beyond academic remediation, a profound cultural shift has expanded the definition of youth development. Today's parents
are highly focused on holistic growth, seeking out programs that build critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and technical literacy from an early age. This has paved the way for specialized science, technology, engineering, and math concepts, commonly known as STEM, where children learn coding, robotics, and advanced problem-solving through hands-on activities. Simultaneously, demand has surged for non-academic enrichment franchises, including youth sports leagues, early childhood music academies, and childhood fitness centers, as families prioritize physical health and social development in an increasingly digital world. The dual-income household reality further accelerates this market demand. With both parents working, the need for structured, safe, and enriching environments during afterschool hours and summer breaks is an operational necessity for families. Rather than seeking simple babysitting or unstructured daycare, parents actively look
for programs that maximize this time productively. Franchises that offer reliable transportation from schools, homework assistance, and specialized afternoon activities provide a seamless solution to a daily logistical challenge, embedding themselves as essential components of a family’s weekly routine. Navigating the youth education space independently presents immense hurdles, which is precisely why consumers and educators heavily favor established franchise systems. Parents are fiercely protective of their children and require immediate reassurance regarding safety, curriculum efficacy, and staff vetting. A recognized
franchise brand brings instant credibility through proprietary, research-backed curricula, standardized teacher training modules, and rigorous safety protocols. For the franchise owner, the corporate infrastructure provides a turn-key operating system, encompassing sophisticated enrollment management software, digital progresstracking tools for parents, and localized marketing blueprints to outpace independent competitors. The demand for children’s education and enrichment services remains insulated from broader economic fluctuations. Parents consistently prioritize their children’s future and
development, making these services some of the last items cut from a household budget during lean times. As global economies place an even higher premium on technological proficiency and specialized skills, the need for structured, engaging, and trustworthy youth programs will only intensify, offering entrepreneurs a profoundly impactful way to build a business that shapes the local community. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ron Filian is a trusted franchise consultant, helping executives & families explore vetted children enrichment franchise opportunities. THE EDUCATION ISSUE
Kids Want to Perform, Communicate, and Create
A
sk most parents what they want for their children, and you'll hear familiar answers. They want them to be successful. Confident. Happy. Prepared for the future. For decades, educational conversations have focused heavily on academics. Reading scores, mathematics proficiency, standardized testing, and college preparation have dominated discussions among educators, policymakers, and parents alike. Those subjects are undeniably important. But as the world continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace, another question is emerging: What skills will matter most in a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and technology? The answer may surprise many people. While technical knowledge remains important, employers and business leaders consistently point to a different set of qualities that are becoming increasingly valuable: communication, creativity, collaboration, confidence, emotional intelligence, and leadership. These are the skills that separate individuals who simply understand information from those who
46
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
can inspire, innovate, and lead. And remarkably, many of those skills begin developing long before a child ever enters elementary school. That reality is helping fuel the growth of innovative early childhood education concepts like Building Kidz, a preschool and childcare organization that combines academic learning with performing arts education while dedicating a
significant portion of its profits to helping underprivileged children around the world through its nonprofit initiative, Building Futures Worldwide. At first glance, preschool may seem far removed from discussions about the future economy. In reality, it may be one of the most important places to start. Research consistently shows that the earliest years
of childhood are critical for cognitive, emotional, and social development. During these formative years, children develop foundational skills that influence learning, relationships, confidence, and future achievement. The experiences children have during these years can shape the trajectory of their lives. Yet many traditional early childhood programs focus primarily on supervision and basic educational preparation. Building Kidz approaches the challenge differently. By integrating performing arts into early childhood education, the organization recognizes something many educators have long understood: children learn best when they are actively engaged. Music, dance, theater, movement, and creative expression do more than entertain children. They help develop communication skills. They build confidence. They encourage teamwork. They foster self-expression. Most importantly, they help children become comfortable standing up, speaking out, and sharing ideas. Those abilities may become increasingly valuable in the decades ahead. Artificial intelligence can process information. It can generate reports. It can analyze data.
But it cannot replace human connection. The ability to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, inspire teams, and present ideas remains uniquely human. In fact, many experts believe these interpersonal skills will become even more important as technology continues to automate routine tasks. The future workforce will need technical competency, but it will also need people who can lead, persuade, create, and connect. Those qualities often begin developing through experiences that encourage children to perform, participate, and express themselves. A child standing on stage for the first time is learning far more than choreography or memorization.
They are learning confidence. They are learning courage. They are learning how to manage fear and uncertainty. They are learning how to communicate with an audience. Those lessons extend far beyond childhood performances. They become valuable throughout life. The entrepreneur pitching investors. The executive leading a company meeting. The physician explaining treatment options. The attorney presenting a case. The teacher leading a classroom. Each relies on communication and confidence developed over years of experience. Building Kidz recognizes that these skills are not secondary to education. They are education. The company's model also reflects another growing trend in modern business: purposedriven entrepreneurship. Today's consumers increasingly support organizations that create meaningful social impact alongside financial success. Building Kidz has embedded that philosophy directly into its business model through its commitment to donate 25 percent of profits to Building Futures Worldwide, helping underserved children gain access to educational opportunities. This approach resonates strongly with modern families. 48
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
Parents are looking beyond products and services. They want to support organizations whose values align with their own. They want their children to grow up understanding the importance of community, compassion, and global citizenship. Businesses that combine profitability with purpose are increasingly positioned for long-term success. From a f ranchising perspective, few sectors offer a stronger combination of demand, impact, and relevance than early childhood education. The need is substantial. Parents continue to seek high-quality childcare and preschool options
that provide meaningful developmental experiences. Communities need educational solutions that prepare children for a rapidly changing future. Employers benefit f rom a workforce supported by reliable childcare options. The result is a sector with strong fundamentals and enduring demand. But perhaps the most compelling aspect of concepts like Building Kidz is their long-term impact. Many businesses improve convenience. Some improve efficiency. A select few help shape lives. Every child who develops confidence, discovers a passion for learning, or finds their voice through creative expression carries those experiences forward. The ripple effects can last decades. As business leaders continue debating the future of work, education, and technology, one thing remains clear. The next generation will need more than academic knowledge alone. They will need confidence. They will need creativity. They will need communication skills. They will need empathy, resilience, and leadership. Organizations like Building Kidz are helping cultivate those qualities at the very beginning of a child's journey. And in doing so, they are investing not only in individual children but in the future of our communities, our workforce, and our world. That's a mission worth building.

THE EDUCATION ISSUE
Stanford MBA and Former Consultant Brings Floor Coverings International® to The Woodlands Texas by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates
D
evin Hedgepeth has spent much of his life preparing for highpressure moments. Long before he was walking into homes across The Woodlands with flooring samples in hand, he was lining up at cornerback for Oklahoma State University, where he earned a full football scholarship and learned the discipline of preparation, resilience, and performance. From there, his career took him into some of the most demanding arenas in business — ExxonMobil, Bain & Company, and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Now, Hedgepeth is channeling that same competitive drive, strategic thinking, and commitment to excellence into a new kind of venture: helping homeowners transform their spaces as the owner of Floor Coverings International of The Woodlands. The recently opened business serves The Woodlands, Spring, Magnolia, Kingwood, Shenandoah, Oak Ridge North, Conroe, Humble, Montgomery, Porter and surrounding North Houston communities. For Hedgepeth, the move
52
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
into flooring may seem unexpected. But to him, it is the natural next step in a career built on precision, problem-solving, and trust. “My career before Floor Coverings International spans about 15 years across two very different but complementary worlds,” Hedgepeth said. “I started in the energy industry at ExxonMobil, where I got my first taste of large-scale operations, complex projects and what it means to execute at a high standard inside a major corporation.” That training, he said, has been carried directly into home services. Floor Coverings International is built around a distinctive Mobile Flooring Showroom® model. Rather than asking customers to visit multiple stores, the company brings more than 3,000 flooring samples directly to the home. Homeowners can see options in the actual rooms
where the floors will be installed, under their own lighting and alongside their existing furniture, paint colors, and décor. For Hedgepeth, that model immediately stood out. “I had been evaluating franchise opportunities seriously for over a year before I signed with Floor Coverings International,” he said. “I looked at a lot of concepts. What stopped me cold was how well the model was designed. It is mobile, it is low-overhead and it brings a premium, convenient experience directly to the customer. As someone who spent years at Bain analyzing business models, I could see immediately that this one was built right.” The decision also came at a meaningful personal moment. Hedgepeth and his wife, Jamille, were married in April 2026, just one month before he launched the business. The two met while earning their MBAs at Stanford, and while Jamille is not involved in the day-to-day operation, Hedgepeth says the business is part of a shared vision for their future. “We were both coming
DEVIN HEDGEPETH HAS BROUGHT FLOOR COVERINGS INTERNATIONAL TO THE WOODLANDS IN TEXAS
out of high-pressure, highachievement careers, the kind where you are always performing for someone else’s scorecard,” he said. “Getting married made us ask a bigger question: what do we want to build? Not just a career — a life. Something that is ours.” That desire for ownership was central to his move from the corporate world into entrepreneurship. “I did not leave my career because something went wrong,” Hedgepeth said. “I left because something felt right. I wanted ownership. I wanted to build equity in something I controlled. I wanted to wake up every morning and know that the effort I put in directly determined what I got back. Floor Coverings International gave me the vehicle to do that.”
He also sees strong opportunities in the greater North Houston market, where new construction, renovations and high homeowner expectations are driving demand for quality flooring solutions. In The Woodlands, Spring and Conroe, he expects continued interest in engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and design-forward products that can stand up to local climate conditions and busy family life. “Engineered hardwood is having a moment, and for good reason,” Hedgepeth said. “Houston’s humidity and heat have always made solid hardwood a risky choice. Engineered hardwood gives homeowners that same warm, authentic look, but with the dimensional stability to hold up
better in our climate.” Luxury vinyl plank is also increasingly popular, especially among families with children and pets. “Luxury vinyl plank has completely changed the game,” he said. “Some of today’s LVP is waterproof, incredibly durable, and frankly beautiful. In a market like ours, where humidity, occasional flood concerns, kids, and pets are all part of real life, it has become the smart choice for a huge segment of homeowners.” Still, Hedgepeth believes the true value of the business goes beyond product selection. Homeowners today are not simply choosing a floor, he said. They are thinking about design, resale value, durability and how their homes support the way they live.
That is where his background comes full circle. “Homeowners want someone who can walk through their home and actually help them make a decision, not just hand them a stack of samples,” Hedgepeth said. “That is exactly what our model is built for.” As he introduces Floor Coverings International of The Woodlands to the community, Hedgepeth is focused less on a traditional grand opening and
more on building relationships one home at a time. “The Woodlands is a community I chose,” he said. “I am not a franchise that parachuted in. I live here, I am invested here, and I am building a business I want my neighbors to trust for decades.” From Division I football to global energy, consulting, and Stanford, Hedgepeth’s path has been anything but typical. The Next Great Business Skill Might Start With a Paintbrush

You will likely hear words such as innovation, creativity, communication, adaptability, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Interestingly, you probably won't hear many people mention memorization. That's because the modern economy is changing. Information has become abundant. Artificial intelligence

can retrieve facts, generate reports, write summaries, and analyze data in seconds. Knowledge remains important, but the ability to think creatively and apply that knowledge in new ways has become increasingly valuable. In many ways, the future belongs to people who can imagine possibilities others cannot see. That reality is causing educators, parents, and business leaders to take a fresh look at something that has often been overlooked in discussions about workforce
development and academic success: art education. For decades, art was sometimes treated as an extracurricular activity, a supplement to "more important" academic subjects. Today, however, many experts recognize that creativity may be one of the most important skills children can develop. That growing awareness is helping drive interest in organizations like Children's Art Classes, a studio-based art education concept dedicated to providing children ages three and older with
opportunities to explore, create, and express themselves through artistic experiences. At first glance, a child standing in front of an easel may seem far removed from the future of business and entrepreneurship. Look closer. The connection is stronger than most people realize. Every innovation begins with an idea. Every company starts with imagination. Every new product, technology, or breakthrough solution originates with someone who looked at the world differently and envisioned something better. Creativity is not separate from business success. It is often the foundation of it. Children's Art Classes understands this principle well. By providing young people with a creative outlet, the organization does more than teach artistic techniques. It creates an environment where children learn to experiment, explore, and think independently. These experiences help develop skills that extend far beyond the art studio. When children create artwork, they make decisions. They solve problems. They adapt when something doesn't go as planned. They learn persistence. They learn patience. Most importantly, they learn that there is often more than one correct answer. That lesson may be one of the most valuable of all. Traditional educational
environments frequently focus on finding the right answer. Art introduces children to a different concept: sometimes there are many right answers. That flexibility of thinking is increasingly important in a rapidly changing world. Tomorrow's challenges will not always come with clear instructions. Future leaders will need to navigate uncertainty, solve complex problems, and create solutions that have never existed before. Creative thinking prepares children for exactly that environment. The impact goes beyond innovation. Art also plays an important role in confidence development. Many children struggle to find activities where they feel truly successful. Academic subjects can be challenging. Athletics may not appeal to every child. Some students simply need a different avenue through which to discover their strengths. Creative expression provides that opportunity. A child who completes a painting, sculpture, or artistic project experiences something powerful. They create something from nothing. They see an idea become reality. They experience accomplishment. That feeling builds confidence.
And confidence tends to compound over time. Children who believe in their abilities become more willing to take risks, ask questions, try new experiences, and pursue ambitious goals. Those traits often carry into adulthood. Many successful entrepreneurs share a common characteristic: they are comfortable creating something that did not exist before. In many respects, entrepreneurship itself is an act of creativity. The entrepreneur imagines a solution, builds a business, and brings an idea into the world. Art education helps cultivate the same mindset. This growing recognition has contributed to the expansion of educational enrichment programs focused on creativity and self-expression. Parents increasingly understand that preparing children for the future requires more than strong grades WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | JULY 2026

alone. Academic excellence remains important, but so do communication skills, emotional intelligence, resilience, collaboration, and creative thinking. The future workforce will need both technical competence and human creativity. Artificial intelligence may automate routine tasks, but it cannot replicate imagination, empathy, or originality. Those uniquely human qualities will become even more valuable as technology continues to advance. From a franchising perspective, concepts like Children's Art Classes occupy an increasingly attractive niche. Families consistently invest in opportunities that help children grow and develop. 60
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
Educational enrichment remains one of the most resilient sectors because parents view these experiences not as discretionary spending, but as investments in their children's future. At the same time, entrepreneurs are increasingly seeking businesses that provide meaningful impact alongside financial opportunity. Children's enrichment concepts offer both. Franchise owners are not simply operating a business. They are helping young people discover talents, build confidence, and develop skills that can influence their lives for years to come. That combination of purpose and profitability is powerful. As society continues to debate how best to prepare
children for the future, one thing is becoming increasingly clear. Success will not belong solely to those who know the most. It will belong to those who can imagine the most. The innovators, creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders of tomorrow will need the confidence to think differently and the courage to bring new ideas to life. Sometimes that journey begins in an unexpected place. Not in a laboratory. Not in a boardroom. Not in a technology incubator. But in an art studio, where a child picks up a paintbrush and learns that creativity has no limits. And neither do they.

Why Chess May Be the Ultimate Training Ground for the Leaders of Tomorrow
F
or centuries, chess has been known as the game of kings. Today, it may be something even more important. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, rapid technological change, and information overload, chess is emerging as one of the most powerful tools for developing the skills young people will need to thrive in the future.

Strategic thinking. Problem solving. Patience. Decision-making. Risk assessment. Planning. Adaptability. These are the same qualities that define successful entrepreneurs, executives, investors, and leaders. And remarkably, they can begin developing in children as young as four or five years old. That insight sits at the heart of Story Time Chess, an innovative educational concept that has taught more than 50,000 students, partnered with over 600 schools, and spent more than 15 years helping young children learn one of the world's most respected strategy games. The company's breakthrough lies in recognizing a challenge that has existed for generations. Most children find traditional chess instruction intimidating. The game is often presented as complex, serious, and difficult to understand. For many young learners, the rules seem overwhelming before they ever have a chance to appreciate the fun and excitement behind the game itself. Story Time Chess flips that model on its head.
Instead of teaching chess as a series of rules and moves, it introduces the game through stories, characters, and imaginative adventures that make learning natural and engaging. The result is something much larger than a chess lesson. It is a framework for teaching children how to think. And in today's economy, thinking may be the most valuable skill of all. For much of modern history, educational success was closely tied to memorization and information retention. Students learned facts, formulas, and procedures that could later be applied in school or the workplace. Today, information is everywhere. Artificial intelligence can answer questions instantly. Search engines provide immediate access to knowledge. Technology continues to automate routine tasks at unprecedented speed. The competitive advantage of the future will not be knowing information. It will be knowing how to use it. Employers increasingly seek individuals who can evaluate options, anticipate outcomes, solve unfamiliar problems, and make sound decisions under pressure.
Chess develops these exact capabilities. Every move on a chessboard requires a player to think ahead. Children learn to consider consequences before acting. They learn that decisions have outcomes. They learn to analyze situations, recognize patterns, and adjust strategies when circumstances change. These are not merely game skills. They are life skills. A young chess player learns quickly that success rarely comes from impulsive actions. Winning requires planning, patience, and discipline. The same is true in business. The entrepreneur launching a startup must think several moves ahead. The investor evaluating an opportunity must assess risks and potential outcomes. The executive leading an organization must balance short-term decisions with long-term objectives. In many respects, business itself resembles a complex chess match. That connection helps explain why some of the world's most accomplished leaders have long embraced chess as a tool for developing strategic thinking. But perhaps the greatest value of Story Time Chess is that it introduces these
lessons at an age when children are most receptive to learning them. Young children absorb habits, mindsets, and problem-solving approaches that often stay with them for life. Teaching strategic thinking early creates lasting benefits. Equally important is the confidence that comes from mastering a challenging skill. Every child experiences moments of uncertainty when learning something new. Chess provides a safe environment for children to face challenges, make mistakes, and improve through practice. They learn resilience. They learn perseverance. They learn that setbacks are
not failures but opportunities to learn. These lessons have become increasingly important in a culture often driven by instant gratification. Chess rewards patience. It rewards effort. It rewards thoughtful decision-making. The game teaches children that meaningful success is earned rather than given. That message may be more valuable today than ever before. From a franchising perspective, Story Time Chess sits at the intersection of several powerful trends. Parents are investing heavily in educational enrichment programs that help prepare children for future success. They

understand that academic achievement alone is no longer enough. Children must also develop critical thinking, communication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Educational programs that cultivate these skills are increasingly viewed as investments rather than expenses. At the same time, entrepreneurs are seeking businesses that provide both financial opportunity and meaningful impact. Story Time Chess offers exactly that combination. Franchise owners are not simply teaching a game. They are helping children develop cognitive skills that

can influence academic performance, personal confidence, and future leadership potential. Every student who learns to think strategically, solve problems independently, and approach challenges with confidence represents a meaningful success story. The impact extends far beyond the classroom. As artificial intelligence transforms industries and technology reshapes the economy, society will place greater value on uniquely human capabilities. Strategic thinking. Judgment. Creativity. Decision-making.
Adaptability. These are qualities machines can support but cannot replace. Organizations like Story Time Chess are helping develop those capabilities in the next generation. They are teaching children how to think, not just what to think. And in a future where the ability to make smart decisions may be one of the most valuable assets a person can possess, that lesson is priceless. After all, success in life, much like success in chess, rarely belongs to the person who moves first. It belongs to the person who thinks ahead.

Why Music May Be One of the Most Important Investments We Can Make in the Next Generation
I
n a world increasingly dominated by technology, artificial intelligence, and automation, it would be easy to assume that success belongs exclusively to those who can code, analyze data, or engineer the next breakthrough innovation. Yet as business leaders look toward the future, many are arriving at a surprising conclusion. The skills that will matter most may not be purely technical. They may be deeply human. Creativity. Communication. Discipline. Collaboration. Emotional intelligence. Confidence. These qualities consistently appear on lists of the most valuable workplace skills for the coming decades. They help people lead teams, build businesses, solve problems, and connect with others in meaningful ways. The interesting part is where many of those skills begin. Often, they start with music. That philosophy sits at the heart of Musicologie, a music education company founded by Kay and Joseph Barker in 2014 and built around a simple but powerful belief: "Everyone is a musician." At first glance, the statement sounds optimistic. Look deeper, and it reflects
70

a broader truth about human potential. Every child possesses unique abilities. The challenge is helping them discover them. Music has long served as one of the most effective pathways for unlocking confidence, creativity, and personal growth. While many people associate
music lessons with learning an instrument, the benefits extend far beyond notes, scales, and performances. Music teaches life skills. And in today's rapidly changing world, those skills may be more valuable than ever. Consider what happens when a child begins learning
an instrument. Initially, progress is slow. Notes are missed. Timing feels awkward. Frustration is common. But with consistent practice, something remarkable occurs. Improvement becomes visible. Songs become recognizable. Confidence grows. The student begins to realize that mastery comes through effort. This lesson has implications far beyond music. In many ways, learning an instrument is one of the purest forms of personal development. It teaches patience in a world of instant gratification. It teaches discipline in an age of constant distraction. It teaches persistence when success doesn't arrive immediately. Those qualities are becoming increasingly rare and increasingly valuable. Today's children are growing up in an environment unlike any previous generation. Smartphones, streaming platforms, social media, and artificial intelligence provide instant access to information and entertainment. While these technologies create extraordinary opportunities, they also create challenges. Attention spans are under pressure. Patience is harder to develop. Deep focus has become a competitive advantage. Music education helps counterbalance these trends.
Practicing an instrument requires concentration. Students must listen carefully, focus on details, and commit to incremental improvement. They learn that meaningful achievement rarely happens overnight. Those lessons translate directly into academic, professional, and entrepreneurial success. The connection between music and cognitive development has also attracted significant attention from educators and researchers. Music engages multiple areas of the brain simultaneously. It encourages pattern recognition, memory development, listening skills, and coordination. Students learn to process information in creative and analytical ways at
the same time. In many respects, music represents the perfect intersection of art and discipline. It requires creativity. It requires structure. It requires self-expression. It requires accountability. These qualities mirror many of the demands faced by future business leaders and entrepreneurs. Perhaps even more important is music's impact on confidence. Many children spend years searching for something that makes them feel capable and accomplished. Some find it through athletics. Others through academics. For many, music becomes that outlet. an audience experiences something transformative. They face fear. They overcome uncertainty. They take a risk. And they succeed. Those moments create confidence that often extends into every area of life. Future leaders, entrepreneurs, sales professionals, executives, and public speakers all rely on the ability to perform under pressure. The foundations of that skill are often built much earlier than people realize. Music also creates community. Whether through private lessons, group classes, recitals, bands, ensembles, or performances, students learn how to collaborate with others toward a shared goal. In a future where teamwork and interpersonal communication will remain essential, these experiences carry lasting value. Artificial intelligence may automate countless tasks, but it cannot replace human connection. The ability to inspire, communicate, and collaborate will remain distinctly human advantages. Music helps cultivate those strengths. From a franchising perspective, this creates a compelling opportunity. Parents consistently invest in experiences that help children grow, develop confidence, and discover their talents. Music education occupies a unique position because it combines enrichment, personal 72

development, creativity, and lifelong learning. Unlike many industries influenced by changing consumer trends, the desire to help children succeed remains constant. Parents are not simply paying for lessons. They are investing in confidence. They are investing in discipline. They are investing in creativity. They are investing in future opportunity. For franchise owners, that creates a business model built around meaningful impact. Every student who gains confidence, develops a passion, learns perseverance, or discovers a new talent represents a tangible outcome. The rewards extend far beyond financial performance. As the future of work continues to evolve, organizations across every industry are searching for
individuals who can think creatively, communicate effectively, and adapt to change. These skills will define the next generation of leaders. Companies like Musicologie understand that developing those qualities starts long before someone enters the workforce. It starts when a child picks up an instrument, struggles through a difficult lesson, learns a new song, and realizes they are capable of more than they imagined. In a world increasingly shaped by technology, that lesson may be one of the most valuable investments we can make. Because the future will not simply belong to those who know the answers. It will belong to those who have the confidence, creativity, and discipline to create something entirely new. And sometimes, that journey begins with a single note.

Back to School, Back to Purpose: Why Education Franchises Are Built for This Moment by Hao Lam, Founder & CEO, Best in Class Education Center
Every August, something shifts. Parents begin buying school supplies. Students compare schedules. Families try to reset routines after summer. But underneath all of that is a deeper question many parents quietly carry: Is my child truly prepared? After more than 30 years in education, I’ve learned that back-to-school season is not just a retail cycle. It is a decision point. It is the moment many families finally decide to ask for help. Some students need to catch 80

up. Others need confidence. Some are already doing well but need greater challenge and structure. Regardless of where they are academically, parents want the same thing: the belief that their child will have opportunities in the future. That is why education remains one of the most resilient and meaningful industries I have ever seen. Families may postpone vacations, delay large purchases, or cut discretionary spending during uncertain times. But most parents
continue investing in their children’s education because they understand something deeply important: Education creates options. I know this personally because education changed my own life. When I came to North America from Vietnam as a refugee, I experienced instability, uncertainty, and the challenge of starting over in a completely different culture. I struggled with language barriers and with simply trying to fit in. What changed my trajectory
was education. Not just academics — but the confidence, discipline, and opportunity that education created for me. It gave me direction when life felt uncertain. It allowed me to believe that my future could be bigger than my circumstances. Years later, while attending the University of British Columbia, I started tutoring classmates to help pay for school. I discovered something unexpected: I loved helping people learn. I loved seeing students gain confidence once concepts finally clicked for them. That passion eventually became Best in Class Education Center. What started as a single tutoring center in Seattle in 1995 has grown into a franchise network serving families across the United States. But the mission has never changed. We are not simply teaching math and English. We are helping students believe they are capable of more. That purpose is also what makes education franchising unique. Many franchise businesses focus primarily on transactions. Education is different because it is built on trust and relationships. Parents are not simply customers. They are partners. Students are not transactions. They are young people whose confidence and future are being shaped every day. That creates a level of meaning and community connection that few industries
can replicate. At the same time, education must still function as a strong business. One of the lessons I’ve learned over the years is that purpose without structure does not scale well. Franchisees need systems, support, and operational consistency in order to serve families effectively. That is why we built Best in Class around proven curriculum, ongoing coaching, operational support, and multiple revenue streams including enrichment programs, private tutoring, and test prep. Our franchise owners are not left to figure things out alone. And contrary to what many people assume, most successful franchisees do not come from education backgrounds. Some of our strongest owners previously worked in corporate leadership, healthcare, engineering, sales, and other professional industries. What they share is not teaching experience. It is leadership, discipline, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in their communities. The franchisees who thrive in this business are the ones who understand that education is ultimately about people. Over the years, I’ve watched our owners host family literacy nights, sponsor local school events, support STEM competitions, and
become trusted figures in their communities. Their centers become more than businesses. They become places where families feel supported. That is why back-to-school season matters so much to me every year. It is a reminder that education is not simply about grades or test scores. It is about possibility. It is about helping students build confidence in themselves during moments that can feel uncertain or overwhelming. Thirty years after opening our first center, I still believe what I believed back then: Education changes lives. It changed mine first. And today, through our franchisees, we have the opportunity to help change the lives of others as well. If you are exploring your next chapter in franchising, I encourage you to consider not only the business opportunity, but also the long-term impact you want to create. Because while industries evolve and trends come and go, the need for education never goes out of style. To learn more about franchise opportunities, contact us at franchise@ bestinclasseducation.com. Kidology: Bringing Pediatric Therapy Full Circle by Monique Pelle, VP of Operations, Franchise Genesis
How a speech-language pathologist’s personal mission became one of the most compelling franchise opportunities in pediatric care Kidology. More than a decade later, it has grown into a multidisciplinary powerhouse that has touched the lives of over 150,000 families—and is now opening its doors to franchise partners across the country.
W
hen Luba Patlakh launched Kidology, Inc. in Southampton, Pennsylvania, she wasn’t thinking about franchising. She was thinking about kids. As a credentialed SpeechLanguage Pathologist with a front-row view of the gaps in pediatric developmental care, she had a straightforward conviction: families deserved better. They deserved integrated, compassionate, expert-led support that met children where they were, not where the system was most convenient. That conviction became
84
JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
A FOUNDER BUILT FOR THE FRONT LINES Patlakh’s background is inseparable from what makes Kidology work. She didn’t build this company from a spreadsheet, she built it from a treatment room. As a practicing clinician, she understood that siloed therapy rarely produces the best outcomes for children. A child who needs speech support often also needs occupational or behavioral therapy. A family navigating one diagnosis is frequently navigating several. So she built something different: a whole-child, wholefamily model that brings multiple disciplines under one roof and coordinates them around the child’s actual life, not just their clinic schedule. The result is a system that looks elegant from the outside but is, by design, deeply clinical at its core.
AN ECOSYSTEM, NOT JUST A CLINIC Kidology’s service model is one of its defining strengths. The company offers Speech, Occupational, Physical, Behavioral (ABA), and Myofunctional therapies, along with Early Intervention and specialized sensory development programs. Services are delivered across a range of environments: modern clinics, in-home sessions, schools, daycares, and community spaces. Perhaps the most distinctive element of Kidology’s ecosystem is its Mobile Therapy Units, custom-built therapy buses that bring clinical-grade care directly into communities. In a landscape where therapist shortages and long waitlists are the norm, the mobile units represent a genuinely innovative solution that expands access while building brand recognition wherever they travel. The company also operates Sensory Playspaces, pursues active educational partnerships with schools, and maintains a staffing and career platform - Kidology People First - that supports clinician recruitment and retention. Every component
is designed to reinforce the others, creating durable community relationships that generate recurring revenue.
makes the model resilient and part of what distinguishes Kidology from single-service therapy franchises.
THE MARKET BEHIND THE MISSION Kidology is operating in one of healthcare’s fastest-growing segments. The global pediatric healthcare market is projected to exceed $25 billion by 2034, while the pediatric behavioral health sector alone is currently valued at approximately $450 billion and growing at a compound annual rate of 5.5%. Rising diagnosis rates for ASD and ADHD, expanded insurance mandates, and increasing IEP requirements in schools are all driving sustained demand for exactly the kind of integrated, accessible care Kidology provides. For franchisees, the timing matters. Communities across the country are actively searching for providers who can deliver this care at scale. Kidology’s model was purposebuilt to step into that gap.
BUILDING A LEGACY THAT CHANGES LIVES What Patlakh has built is rare: a business model with genuine social utility and genuine financial upside. Kidology franchisees aren’t just opening therapy centers, they’re becoming the go-to pediatric care provider in their regions, building deep community trust while participating in a category that the market continues to demand. “Helping children reach their developmental milestones” is Kidology’s promise to families. For the right franchise partner, it can also be the foundation of a business worth building.
workflows; comprehensive training and hands-on mentorship directly from Patlakh; marketing and local lead-generation support; and ongoing access to new therapy methodologies and technology. The onboarding process spans eleven structured steps across three phases—Exploration, Validation, and Launch, designed to ensure every partner opens with clarity and confidence. Revenue is diversified across multiple streams: clinic services, sensory gym memberships, school and IEP contracts, and mobile therapy unit deployments. That diversification is part of what

From Realtor to 2023 Rookie of the Year:
How Jesse Durham Built a FastGrowing Pillar To Post Home Inspectors Business in North Texas by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates
W
hen Jesse Durham moved from southeast Michigan to Fort Worth, Texas, he was only 27 years old, but he already knew what he wanted: to own a business, stay connected to real estate, and build something with longterm value. Durham had been working as a Realtor before relocating to Texas, and while he enjoyed that career, the move gave him a chance to reconsider his next step. Rather than leave the real estate industry altogether, he looked for a way to use his market knowledge, client-service experience, and entrepreneurial drive in a new direction. That path led him to Pillar

To Post Home Inspectors®, the largest home inspection company in North America with more than 350 locations. “I enjoyed every minute of my career, but when we moved to Fort Worth, I decided to make a leap while still staying close to the real estate market. I wanted to put my skills to the test,” said Durham. “Choosing Pillar To Post Home Inspectors was an easy choice for me. I was able to see firsthand the Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ difference while being a Realtor. It made it clear to me that if I wanted to be successful, then that is the franchise to choose.” Today, Durham and The Durham Team, serves homebuyers, sellers and real estate professionals throughout Tarrant and Johnson counties, with a strong focus on north Fort Worth. Since opening his business in 2023, he has grown from a young franchise owner starting out in a competitive market into one of the brand’s rising success stories. His early performance earned him Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ Rookie of the Year honors for that year, and in 2026, his business now includes five fulltime inspectors. For Durham, the growth did not come from one dramatic
move. It came from doing the fundamentals well every day. “Consistency is number one,” he said. “That’s across the board — customer service, reports and everything.” That philosophy has helped Durham earn trust in a market that is both active and demanding. The Fort Worth area continues to attract buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals with a wide range of experience levels. That creates opportunity but also requires a home inspection company that can communicate clearly, work efficiently, and meet varying expectations. “We have a busy housing market, but we also have a ton of inspectors in the market,” said Durham. “This is a challenging market because there are people from all levels of society here, from new agents to agents with thousands of homes of experience, so expectations are different across the board.” Durham believes that one of the advantages of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is its ability to evolve with the needs of today’s buyers and homeowners. Over the years, the brand has continued adding services as housing demands have changed. Those services are vetted and supported by the training
franchisees need to perform them with confidence. For Durham’s customers, those added services are becoming an increasingly important part of the inspection process. “Our most popular added service is WDI,” he said. “That is inspection for wood destroying insects, often called termite inspections. They are required for certain loan types and thus important to buyers.” Other highly requested services include sewer scope inspections, pool inspections, septic tank inspections and well inspections. Durham said these are no longer extras that buyers can easily overlook. They can be essential to understanding the true condition of a property, especially in a region where homes vary widely in age, style, systems, and land use. “These are extremely important to any buyer,” Durham said. “We have offered all of these since each service was added into Pillar To Post’s service roster along with excellent training. They are all important and have been added along the journey as customer inquiries and demands from the loans side of homebuying have required more thorough inspections. It is great for everyone involved.” Durham’s business has also grown through a strategy known within the company as
a “tuck in” — the acquisition of an existing local home inspection company that is then brought under the Pillar To Post Home Inspectors brand. At the end of last year, Durham acquired a sizeable area inspection company, an effort that expanded his reach but also required careful execution. “We have also done what is referred to as a ‘tuck in,’ which is an acquisition of an existing area home inspection company,” said Durham. “It is a lot of work. ‘Tuck in’ refers to how we want the event to go seamlessly. We tuck them into the Pillar To Post family, and that is the winning formula with these acquisitions.” That process involves much more than changing a name. Existing inspectors must be trained in Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ more advanced systems, technologies, and standards. Realtor relationships and repeat customers must be introduced to the upgraded service model. Most importantly, Durham said, clients need to know they can continue to count on integrity, reliability, and professionalism. That people-first approach extends beyond the inspection itself. Durham has also worked to embed his business in the local community through participation in area charities and events. For a service
business built on trust, he sees community involvement as a natural extension of the brand. In just a few years, Durham has gone from a former Realtor making a bold career move to an award-winning franchise owner leading a growing inspection team in one of North Texas’ most competitive markets. His story is one of timing, discipline, and the willingness to build steadily in a field where reputation matters. For buyers and sellers, a home inspection can be one of the most important steps in a real estate transaction. For Durham, it has become the foundation of a business built on consistency, expanded services, local relationships, and a clear understanding of what today’s real estate market demands. According to Jefferson Livingston, Pillar To Post’s Regional Director for Jesse Durham’s area, “I believe one of the keys to Jesse's success has been his willingness to embrace the system. Many people purchase a franchise and try reinventing the wheel. Jesse has done an amazing job grabbing on to the programs, tools, and support we offer to magnify his success. He shows little fear and bets on himself every day.”

In a World of AI and Unlimited Information, Mastering the Basics Has Never Been More Important
F
or years, the conversation about education has focused on the future. Artificial intelligence. Coding. Robotics. Data science. Machine learning. Parents, educators, and business leaders have spent countless hours discussing the skills children will need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. But amid all the excitement surrounding emerging technologies, an important question remains: What happens if students never master the fundamentals? The truth is simple. Before a child can become a software engineer, entrepreneur, doctor, attorney, or AI specialist, they must first know how to read, write, think critically, communicate effectively, and solve mathematical problems. Those foundational skills remain the building blocks of every future success story. That reality has helped drive the growth and relevance of educational organizations like Best in Class Education Center, a Seattle-based learning company founded in 1995 that focuses on mathematics, English, tutoring, enrichment programs, and standardized test preparation. While educational trends continue to evolve, Best in Class has remained focused on

something timeless: helping students build strong academic foundations that create opportunities for the rest of their lives. And in today's increasingly complex world, that mission may be more valuable than ever. The modern student faces challenges previous generations never experienced. Technology creates incredible opportunities, but it also introduces unprecedented distractions. Students compete for attention against smartphones, social media, streaming platforms, gaming, and a nonstop flow of digital content. At the same time, academic expectations continue to rise. Colleges have become more competitive. Employers increasingly demand advanced skills. Parents worry about learning gaps that may impact long-term opportunities. Many students struggle to keep pace in classrooms where teachers are balancing the needs of dozens of learners simultaneously. The result is a growing demand for personalized educational support. Families are recognizing that success often requires more than what can be provided during the traditional school day. Students need reinforcement.
They need confidence. They need individualized attention. Most importantly, they need a learning environment where they can master concepts before moving forward. This is where supplemental education programs have become a powerful force in modern learning. Organizations like Best in Class focus on helping students strengthen core academic skills while building the confidence necessary to tackle increasingly difficult challenges. That confidence is often the missing ingredient in education. Many students who struggle academically are not lacking intelligence. They are lacking
belief in themselves. A student who repeatedly encounters difficulty in math may begin to think they simply are not good at math. A student who struggles with reading comprehension may become hesitant to participate in class. Over time, small academic challenges can evolve into larger confidence issues. The danger is not merely lower grades. The danger is lower expectations. When students stop believing they can succeed, they often stop trying to reach their full potential. Effective educational support helps reverse that process. As students begin mastering concepts and seeing measurable progress, their confidence grows. They become more willing to ask questions, tackle difficult assignments, and challenge themselves academically. Success creates momentum. Momentum creates confidence. Confidence creates opportunity. The impact extends far beyond report cards. Strong reading and mathematical skills influence nearly every aspect of future achievement. Whether students pursue higher education, skilled trades, entrepreneurship, healthcare, engineering, finance, or technology, foundational academic competencies remain essential. In many ways, literacy and numeracy have become
the universal language of opportunity. Even in the age of artificial intelligence, those fundamentals matter. Perhaps more than ever. AI can provide answers. It cannot replace understanding. Students still need to evaluate information, identify reliable sources, think critically, communicate ideas clearly, and solve problems independently. The future workforce will not simply be rewarded for accessing information. It will be rewarded for knowing what to do with it. That distinction makes educational enrichment programs particularly relevant as the economy continues to evolve. From a franchising perspective, education represents one of the most compelling long-term sectors in the marketplace. Unlike industries heavily influenced by economic cycles, educational investment tends to remain remarkably resilient. Parents consistently prioritize opportunities that help their children succeed academically and professionally. Education is rarely viewed as discretionary spending. It is viewed as an investment with potentially lifelong returns. That creates a powerful foundation for sustainable business growth. More importantly, it creates an opportunity for entrepreneurs to build businesses that deliver meaningful impact. Few industries allow business
owners to witness the direct results of their efforts so clearly. Improved grades, stronger test scores, college admissions, scholarship opportunities, and increased student confidence all serve as visible reminders of the value being created. Every student who overcomes an academic challenge represents a success story. Every family that gains confidence in their child's future represents a meaningful outcome. As America continues to prepare for a rapidly changing economy, educational excellence will remain a critical national priority. The technologies may change. The industries may evolve. The careers may look different than they do today. But the need for strong readers, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and confident problem-solvers will never disappear. That is why organizations like Best in Class Education Center continue to play such an important role. They are not simply helping students earn better grades. They are helping build the skills, confidence, and academic foundations that will shape the next generation of leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and professionals. In a world obsessed with the future, they remind us of an important truth. The future belongs to those who master the fundamentals first. WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | JULY 2026

The Future Isn't Waiting: Why STEM Education Is Becoming America's Most Important Investment
W
alk into almost any classroom in America today and ask students what they want to be when they grow up. You'll hear answers like software engineer, entrepreneur, robotics designer, AI specialist, aerospace engineer, game developer, biomedical researcher, or inventor. A generation ago, many of these careers either didn't exist or were confined to small corners of the economy. Today, they represent some of the fastest-growing and most influential professions in the world. The challenge is that while technology continues to advance at an incredible pace, our educational system often struggles to keep up. Artificial intelligence is transforming industries. Robotics are reshaping manufacturing and logistics. Biotechnology is changing healthcare. Data science influences nearly every major business decision. Yet many students are still learning through educational models designed for a world that looked very different from the one they will enter. That gap is creating one of the most important

opportunities in both education and franchising. Few companies illustrate this trend better than Stemtree, a rapidly growing educational concept focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through handson learning experiences. At its core, Stemtree recognizes a simple reality: children learn best when they are actively engaged. Instead of simply reading about science, students conduct experiments. Instead of memorizing formulas, they solve problems. Instead of hearing about technology, they build, code, create, and explore. This approach may seem obvious, but its impact is
profound. The future workforce will not be defined by what people know. It will be defined by how quickly they can learn, adapt, and solve problems. The World Economic Forum consistently ranks analytical thinking, creativity, innovation, and technological literacy among the most important skills for future employment. Employers increasingly value individuals who can think critically, collaborate effectively, and navigate rapidly changing environments. These skills are difficult to teach through traditional lectures alone. They are developed through experience.
That is why STEM education has become one of the most significant growth sectors in the broader education industry. Parents understand that the future their children face will be more competitive than ever before. They recognize that academic success alone may not be enough. Students must develop confidence with technology, comfort with problem-solving, and an ability to think independently. Programs like those offered through Stemtree help bridge that gap. Through coding, robotics, engineering projects, mathematics enrichment, science exploration, camps, tutoring, after-school programs, and homeschool support, students gain exposure to concepts that increasingly shape the modern economy. More importantly, they gain confidence. Confidence is often the hidden benefit of STEM education. When a child successfully writes a line of code, builds a functioning robot, solves a challenging math problem, or completes a scientific experiment, something important happens. They begin to see themselves differently. They stop viewing science and technology as subjects reserved for "smart kids." They begin to believe they belong. That mindset shift can alter the trajectory of a young person's life. For communities across
America, this matters more than ever. Businesses continue to report shortages of skilled workers in technology, engineering, healthcare, manufacturing, and other highly technical fields. Universities seek students prepared for rigorous STEM programs. Governments invest billions in innovation and workforce development initiatives. The demand for STEM talent continues to grow while the supply struggles to keep pace. Educational enrichment providers are increasingly stepping in to help fill that void. From a franchising perspective, this creates a compelling opportunity. Unlike many businesses that rise and fall with economic cycles, education tends to remain a priority for families regardless of market conditions. Parents consistently invest in opportunities that help their children succeed. Education is not viewed as an expense. It is viewed as an investment. That dynamic has helped create sustained demand for tutoring, enrichment programs, after-school learning centers, camps, and specialized educational experiences. For entrepreneurs looking to build businesses that create both financial returns and social impact,
education franchises occupy a unique position. They provide the opportunity to generate revenue while simultaneously helping shape the next generation of innovators, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and leaders. The broader significance extends beyond individual students. America's long-term economic competitiveness depends on its ability to develop talent. Innovation has always been one of the nation's greatest strengths. From aerospace and computing to medicine and artificial intelligence, breakthrough ideas have fueled economic growth for decades. The next generation of breakthroughs will come from today's classrooms. Or perhaps more accurately, from the students who are given opportunities to explore, experiment, and discover their potential. As technology continues to transform nearly every aspect of society, the importance of STEM education will only increase. The future belongs to problem-solvers. It belongs to innovators. It belongs to those who can adapt to change and create solutions that do not yet exist. Companies like Stemtree are helping prepare young people for that future, one experiment, one project, and one discovery at a time. Nearly 50 Years Later, Huntington Learning Center Is Solving One of America's Biggest Challenges
I
n 1977, when Eileen and Ray Huntington opened the first Huntington Learning Center, the educational landscape looked very different. There were no smartphones. No artificial intelligence tools. No online learning platforms. No social media distractions competing for students' attention every waking moment. Yet one challenge existed then just as it does today: every child learns differently. Nearly five decades later, that simple truth remains at the heart of one of America's most enduring education franchise brands. While technology, careers, and society have changed dramatically, Huntington

Learning Center has built its reputation around helping students unlock their potential through personalized instruction, tutoring, academic support, and test preparation. And in today's rapidly changing world, that mission may be more important than ever. America is facing an education paradox. Students have access to more information than any generation in history. With a few clicks, they can learn almost anything. Artificial intelligence can answer questions instantly. Educational resources are available online around the clock. Yet many students continue to struggle academically.
Reading proficiency remains a concern in many districts. Math scores have become a national conversation. Learning loss from the pandemic continues to impact students years later. Parents increasingly worry about whether their children are keeping pace academically and developing the skills necessary to compete in an increasingly demanding world. The issue isn't access to information. It's access to guidance. Information is abundant. Personalized support is not. That distinction helps explain why tutoring and educational support services have become one of the fastest-growing sectors in education. Parents understand that no two students are alike. One child may excel in science but struggle with reading comprehension. Another may be highly capable but lack confidence. A third may need help preparing for college entrance exams that could shape future opportunities. A standardized classroom, no matter how talented the teacher, cannot always address every student's unique needs. That is where specialized learning centers have become indispensable. Huntington recognized this long before personalized education became a buzzword.
For nearly 50 years, the company has focused on identifying individual student challenges and creating customized learning plans designed to help children improve academically and build confidence. That confidence may be the most valuable outcome of all. Parents often enroll students seeking better grades or stronger test scores. What many discover is something much deeper. Students who once believed they were "bad at math" begin solving problems successfully. Struggling readers begin enjoying books. Teenagers anxious about college entrance exams develop confidence in their abilities. The transformation is not simply academic. It is personal. Confidence has a compounding effect. Students who believe they can succeed become more willing to tackle challenges. They participate more actively in class. They become more engaged learners. They begin to see opportunities where they once saw obstacles. In many ways, educational success is not just about knowledge. It is about helping students believe they are capable of achieving more than they thought possible. That lesson has become increasingly relevant as the future workforce undergoes rapid transformation. Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries. Automation is changing job requirements. Entire career categories are emerging while
others evolve at unprecedented speed. The jobs today's elementary school students will hold twenty years from now may not even exist today. This reality places enormous pressure on families and educators. Academic excellence remains important, but so do critical thinking, adaptability, communication, and lifelong learning skills. Students who learn how to learn will possess one of the most valuable advantages in the modern economy. Organizations like Huntington Learning Center play a critical role in helping develop those capabilities. The company is not simply helping students pass exams. It is helping create stronger learners. And stronger learners become stronger employees, entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders. From a franchising perspective, this creates a compelling long-term opportunity. Education has consistently proven to be one of the most resilient sectors of the economy. Parents may postpone vacations, delay major purchases, or reduce discretionary spending during uncertain economic times. But they rarely stop investing in their children's future. Education occupies a unique place in the family budget. It is viewed not as a cost, but as an
investment with lifelong returns. That reality has allowed education-focused franchise concepts to maintain relevance through multiple economic cycles. For franchise owners, the opportunity extends beyond financial performance. Few businesses allow entrepreneurs to make such a direct impact on families and communities. Every improved report card, every college acceptance letter, every breakthrough moment, and every student who discovers newfound confidence represents a tangible difference in someone's life. That sense of purpose is increasingly attractive to entrepreneurs seeking businesses that deliver both profitability and meaning. As Huntington Learning Center approaches its 50th anniversary, its continued success offers an important lesson. Trends come and go. Technologies evolve. Markets change. But helping people reach their potential never goes out of style. In an age defined by disruption and uncertainty, the ability to learn, adapt, and grow may be the most important skill of all. For nearly half a century, Huntington Learning Center has been helping students develop exactly that capability. And in the process, it has built something far more significant than a tutoring company. It has built a lasting investment in the future of America's next generation. Why the Future of Childhood May Depend on Getting Kids Moving Again
T
he average child today lives in a world dramatically different from the one their parents grew up in. A generation ago, children spent countless hours riding bicycles, playing pickup games, climbing trees, and exploring neighborhoods with friends. Physical activity was woven naturally into daily life. Today, childhood often looks different. Screens compete for attention from the moment children wake up. Entertainment is available instantly. Schoolwork increasingly takes place on computers. Even social interaction frequently occurs through digital platforms. Technology has delivered incredible benefits, but it has also created an unintended

consequence: many children are moving less than ever before. Parents, educators, pediatricians, and community leaders are becoming increasingly concerned about the long-term effects of this trend. Physical activity impacts far more than health and fitness. It influences confidence, social development, emotional wellbeing, academic performance, and lifelong habits. As these concerns grow, organizations like Kidokinetics are helping redefine what youth fitness can look like for the next generation. Focused on children ages one to ten, Kidokinetics combines sports enrichment, movement, fitness, coordination development, and fun into experiences designed to help children build both physical and personal skills. At first glance, it may seem like a youth sports program. In reality, it represents something much larger. It represents a growing movement to prepare children for success by helping them develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and healthy habits at an early age. These qualities are becoming increasingly important in a world where childhood itself is changing rapidly. The conversation about preparing children for the
future often focuses on academics. Parents discuss reading proficiency, STEM education, coding, college admissions, and career readiness. All of these subjects matter. But there is another foundational skill that deserves equal attention: movement. Children learn through movement long before they learn through textbooks. Running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching, and coordinating their bodies are essential developmental milestones. These activities help build physical strength, but they also strengthen neural pathways that support learning, concentration, and problem-solving. Movement and learning are deeply connected. Research continues to demonstrate that physically active children often perform better academically, maintain stronger focus, and exhibit greater emotional regulation. In other words, fitness is not separate from education. It is part of education. Kidokinetics recognizes this reality by creating programs that introduce children to a wide variety of sports and physical activities in a fun, nonintimidating environment. That approach is particularly important because many children never discover athletic interests simply because they are exposed to too few options. Traditional youth sports
often encourage early specialization. Children may be pushed toward one sport before they have had the opportunity to explore others. The result can be burnout, frustration, or a belief that sports simply are not for them. Kidokinetics takes a different approach. By exposing children to multiple sports and activities, it encourages exploration rather than pressure. The emphasis is on participation, skill development, confidence, and enjoyment. That distinction matters. When children have fun moving, they are far more likely to remain active throughout their lives. And lifelong physical activity produces benefits that extend far beyond childhood. The confidence developed through sports and movement often carries into every area of life. A child who learns to throw a ball, complete an obstacle course, or master a new skill experiences something powerful. They experience achievement. Achievement creates confidence. Confidence creates momentum. Momentum creates growth. These experiences teach children that improvement comes through effort. They learn that mistakes are part of learning. They discover that challenges can be overcome through persistence and practice. Those lessons become valuable long after the
game ends. The future workforce will increasingly reward individuals who can adapt, collaborate, persevere, and work effectively with others. Interestingly, many of those qualities are first learned on playgrounds, athletic fields, and sports courts. Teamwork teaches collaboration. Competition teaches resilience. Physical activity teaches discipline. Sports teach leadership. These are not merely athletic lessons. They are life lessons. From a franchising perspective, this creates an exciting opportunity. Parents are investing more than ever in enrichment activities that help children develop physically, socially, and emotionally. They understand that success in life involves more than academic achievement alone. They want their children to be healthy, confident, and capable. Businesses that help fulfill those goals occupy a valuable position in the marketplace. The youth enrichment sector continues to experience strong demand because parents recognize the long-term benefits of early developmental experiences. Unlike many industries that are driven by trends, children's development remains a
timeless priority. Entrepreneurs entering this space are not simply providing a service. They are helping shape future generations. Every child who gains confidence through movement, discovers a love for sports, develops coordination, or learns to work as part of a team represents a meaningful outcome. Few business sectors provide such a direct connection between commercial success and community impact. As society becomes increasingly digital, the value of physical experiences will continue to rise. Children need opportunities to move. They need opportunities to play. They need opportunities to build confidence through action rather than observation. Organizations like Kidokinetics are helping fill that need by making fitness fun, accessible, and engaging for young children. The long-term impact extends far beyond exercise. They are helping create healthier kids, stronger communities, and future adults who understand the value of persistence, teamwork, and personal growth. In a world increasingly defined by screens, that may be one of the most important investments we can make. Because the future doesn't just belong to children who are smart. It belongs to children who are confident enough to get in the game. WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | JULY 2026

The Business of Building Futures
F
or decades, franchising was dominated by categories people immediately understood. Food. Fitness. Home services. Hotels. Automotive. But quietly, another sector has been building into one of the most important and resilient categories in franchising today: children and education. And unlike many industries driven purely by discretionary spending, this one sits at the intersection of something much deeper. Parents will cut vacations before they cut opportunities for their children. That mindset has created one of the strongest long-term growth stories in franchising. The numbers are massive. The U.S. childcare market alone is projected to exceed $100 billion over the next decade, driven largely by dual-income households, population growth in suburban markets, and increasing demand for structured early education programs. At the same time, tutoring and supplemental education continue exploding. The U.S. private tutoring market is expected to grow by nearly $29 billion between 2025 and 2029. Globally, the private tutoring market is projected to eventually surpass $160 billion. Those are not niche numbers anymore. That is major industry territory.

JULY 2026 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
What makes the category so interesting is that it has evolved far beyond traditional daycare centers or after-school tutoring. Today’s children’s franchise landscape includes: • Early childhood education • STEM and robotics programs • Coding academies • Learning centers • Sports enrichment • Music education • Art programs • Tutoring • Special needs support • Child wellness concepts • Youth leadership programs • Indoor playgrounds and activity centers The category has become incredibly sophisticated. Brands like The Goddard School and Primrose Schools helped redefine what premium childcare could look like in America. These are no longer simple babysitting businesses. Parents increasingly view them as educational foundations that prepare children socially and academically before kindergarten even begins. Kumon became a global force by proving that parents would consistently invest in supplemental math and reading education outside traditional schools. Mathnasium built an entire franchise empire around
making mathematics less intimidating for children while simultaneously creating recurring monthly revenue models that operators love. Meanwhile, concepts focused on STEM education, coding, and robotics are seeing enormous momentum because parents
increasingly worry their children are entering a world where technology skills will determine economic opportunities. A generation ago, parents pushed piano lessons. Today, many are pushing coding camps and robotics competitions. What makes this category especially attractive inside franchising is that it combines emotional purchasing behavior with recurring revenue. Parents rarely make educational decisions purely based on price. They make decisions based on trust, safety, reputation, and outcomes. That creates unusually strong customer retention when brands execute well. The demographic trends are also extremely favorable. Millennial parents spend heavily on enrichment activities. Many households now view extracurricular education as essential rather than optional. At the same time, working parents continue needing reliable childcare and structured programs that extend beyond school hours. The result is a category with demand coming from multiple directions at once. And unlike some franchise sectors that are highly vulnerable to economic swings, education and childcare tend to hold up well during downturns because parents continue prioritizing their children even during uncertain times. Another reason this category continues attracting
franchise interest is because many operators feel they are building something meaningful. That matters more than people realize. Talk to owners in this space and you often hear something different than you hear in traditional retail or food concepts. Many genuinely feel connected to the mission. They are not simply selling products. They are helping children read, build confidence, improve academically, socialize, or prepare for the future. That creates stronger emotional buy-in from franchisees, employees, and customers. The sector is also becoming increasingly institutionalized. Private equity groups and sophisticated investors have entered aggressively because they recognize the stability and scalability of education-focused models. Large childcare and tutoring brands now operate hundreds of locations nationally with highly systemized operations, curriculum support, technology platforms, and sophisticated marketing systems. At the same time, smaller emerging brands continue entering the market with niche positioning. Some focus exclusively on autism support services. Others specialize in coding, STEM, foreign languages, esports, or leadership development. In many ways, the children and education category is beginning to mirror what fitness franchising
became over the last twenty years. It started broad, then fragmented into highly specialized verticals serving different needs and demographics. What happens next may be even bigger. Artificial intelligence, online learning, hybrid education models, and personalized learning systems are already reshaping the educational landscape. But interestingly, technology may actually increase demand for physical franchise locations rather than replace them entirely. Why? Because parents still want structure, accountability, socialization, mentorship, and human interaction for their children. Technology can supplement learning, but most parents do not want their kids isolated behind screens all day. That creates an enormous opportunity for franchise brands capable of combining technology with in-person engagement and communitybased learning environments. The bigger picture is clear. The children and education sector is no longer a side category in franchising. It has become one of the most economically important and emotionally resilient industries in the franchise world. And for operators looking for a category with longterm demographic tailwinds, recurring revenue, emotional customer loyalty, and meaningful impact, this may ultimately become one of the most important sectors of the next decade. Why Creativity May Be the Most Valuable Skill of the Future For decades, parents have asked their children a familiar question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The answers have traditionally centered around careers. Doctor. Lawyer. Engineer. Teacher. Entrepreneur. Today, however, that question may be harder to answer than ever before. Artificial intelligence is transforming industries at breathtaking speed. Automation is changing how work gets done. Entire job categories are emerging while others are being redefined. Many of the careers today's children will pursue haven't even been invented yet. In a world where knowledge is increasingly available at the touch of a button, one skill is becoming more valuable, not less. Creativity. The ability to imagine, innovate, communicate, and solve problems in original ways may become one of the defining competitive advantages of the next generation. That reality is creating a renewed appreciation for arts education and helping fuel the growth of organizations like Abrakadoodle, a children's art education company that has inspired more than one million children through classes, 112

camps, school programs, and creative experiences since its founding in 2002. At first glance, art education might seem unrelated to future workforce development. The opposite is true. Some of the world's most successful innovators have long understood the connection between creativity and achievement. Steve Jobs famously spoke about the intersection of technology and the liberal arts. Leading technology companies increasingly seek employees who can think creatively, communicate effectively, collaborate with diverse teams, and approach challenges from multiple perspectives. These are not simply artistic skills. They are business skills.
The future economy will reward people who can create what machines cannot. While artificial intelligence can analyze information and generate content, human creativity remains at the center of innovation. New products, new experiences, new brands, and new ideas all begin with imagination. That is why arts education deserves a much larger role in conversations about preparing children for the future. Programs like those offered by Abrakadoodle help children develop far more than drawing and painting techniques. They encourage curiosity. They promote selfexpression. They build confidence. They teach children
that there can be multiple solutions to a single problem. In traditional educational environments, students are often evaluated based on finding the correct answer. Art introduces a different way of thinking. It encourages experimentation, exploration, and creative risk-taking. Those experiences can have a profound impact on personal development. A child who creates a piece of artwork learns more than artistic technique. They learn how to make decisions, solve problems, adapt when things don't go according to plan, and take pride in their accomplishments. Those lessons carry forward into every aspect of life. Confidence, after all, is often built one small success at a time. For many children, art provides an opportunity to shine in ways they may not experience elsewhere. Students who struggle academically may discover creative talents they never knew they possessed. Children who are naturally quiet may find a powerful outlet for self-expression. Young people who feel hesitant to share ideas often gain confidence through creative achievement. That confidence becomes a foundation for future success. Parents increasingly recognize these benefits. As educational priorities evolve, families are looking beyond traditional academic enrichment. They want opportunities that help children become wellrounded individuals capable
of navigating a rapidly changing world. That means developing not only technical skills but also emotional intelligence, communication skills, resilience, adaptability, and creativity. Art education supports all of these objectives. This growing awareness helps explain why creative enrichment programs continue to gain momentum across the country. For entrepreneurs, it also highlights a compelling opportunity within the franchise industry. Unlike businesses driven primarily by trends or consumer fads, children's enrichment programs address enduring needs. Parents consistently seek activities that help their children grow, learn, and develop confidence. The demand is rooted in something timeless: a parent's desire to help their child reach their full potential. Franchise concepts focused on education and enrichment occupy a unique space because they combine financial opportunity with meaningful community impact. Owners are not simply selling a product or service. They are helping shape experiences that can influence how children view themselves and their capabilities. Every painting completed,
every creative breakthrough, and every child who discovers a new passion represents a tangible outcome. Few industries offer such a direct connection between business success and personal impact. The broader significance extends beyond individual students. As society becomes increasingly automated, uniquely human skills will become more valuable. Creativity, empathy, communication, collaboration, and innovation will help define the leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. These qualities cannot be downloaded. They must be developed. Organizations like Abrakadoodle are helping nurture those skills at an early age by giving children opportunities to explore their imagination, express themselves, and think creatively. In many ways, they are preparing students not just for school, but for life. As we look toward a future increasingly shaped by technology, one truth remains clear. The most successful people won't simply be those who know the most. They will be those who can imagine what comes next. That journey often begins with a blank sheet of paper, a paintbrush, and the confidence to create something entirely new. And that may be one of the most important lessons a child can learn. They can support franchise development, vendor relationships, brand awareness, franchisee lead generation, community connection, and network momentum. The key is approaching the event with Clarity, Focus, and Execution from planning through follow-up. Q: WHAT SHOULD A FRANCHISE BRAND CLARIFY BEFORE THE SHOW? Define the win first. A franchisor may attend a trade show to meet franchise candidates, build supplier relationships, increase brand visibility, or strengthen industry positioning. A franchisee may attend to generate local leads, meet community partners, create awareness, or deepen relationships in the market. Both need clarity. What is the target audience? In franchising, alignment is everything. Corporate marketing, franchise development, operations, field support, and franchisees may all have different priorities. That can create confusion unless the plan is clear up front. The strongest franchise brands create one aligned strategy. They clarify messaging, roles, lead categories, booth expectations, and next steps. They also protect brand consistency. Every sign, script, handout, and conversation
Q: HOW SHOULD FRANCHISE TEAMS ENGAGE PROSPECTS AT THE BOOTH? The booth should communicate the brand quickly and clearly. People should know who you serve, what makes the brand different, and what next step makes sense. For franchisors, that may mean engaging qualified franchise candidates, multiunit operators, vendors, real estate contacts, or strategic partners. For franchisees, it may mean connecting with local customers, referral partners, employers, schools, community groups, or business owners. The right people matter. Choose team members based on role and strength. Some are great at welcoming visitors. Some are strong at asking discovery questions. Some are ideal for explaining
A GREAT TRADE SHOW CONVERSATION IS CONSULTATIVE. ASK WHY THE PERSON IS ATTENDING. ASK WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. ASK WHAT MATTERS MOST IN THEIR DECISION. ASK WHAT NEXT STEP WOULD BE USEFUL. the franchise model. Others are best at sharing the franchisee experience or walking the floor to connect with People of Influence. Training matters too. Everyone should understand the brand message, the lead process, the qualification questions, and the handoff plan. A great trade show conversation is consultative. Ask why the person is attending. Ask what they are trying to accomplish. Ask what matters most in their decision. Ask what next step would be useful. Tools work when they add value. A franchise development guide, local offer, brand story piece, checklist, or educational booklet can extend the conversation long after the event. The right tool becomes a strategic gift and a credibility builder. The goal is not random traffic. The goal is qualified engagement that supports system growth and local execution. Q: WHAT FOLLOW-UP PROCESS CREATES THE STRONGEST FRANCHISE RESULTS? Follow-up should be designed before the event opens. This is a major Blind Spot for many teams. Leads come in, conversations happen,
excitement builds, then the post-show process lacks speed and ownership. Franchise systems need clear routing. Franchise development leads should move into the candidate journey. Local customer leads should go to the right franchisee or market team. Vendor relationships should go to corporate leadership. Operational questions should go to support. Media or influencer connections should receive timely communication. Prioritization is essential. A strong franchise candidate, multi-unit prospect, or major local partnership may deserve immediate attention. A general inquiry may belong in a nurture sequence. Both matter. They need different paths. Debrief during the event while details are fresh. Capture common questions, objections, competitor activity, lead quality, booth traffic patterns, and commitments made. These insights help improve future events, franchise sales, marketing, training, and field support. Then follow up fast. Speed
communicates professionalism. It also keeps the relationship warm. Send the promised resource. Schedule the next call. Make the introduction. Support the franchisee. Close the loop. Franchise growth is built through consistent execution. The brands that follow through best create trust across the network and in the marketplace. Trade shows can become growth engines for franchise brands when they are intentional, aligned, and well executed. Get clear. Train the team. Protect the brand. Capture the right leads. Follow up with speed. That is how a franchise system turns one event into stronger duplication, better local execution, and Next Level growth.
