WHAT IS EUREKA!? Eureka! disciples kids by teaching them the fundamentals of studying God’s Word—not only so they can grow in their faith today but also to equip them with the skills they’ll need to study the Bible throughout their lives. A lot of children’s curriculum tells kids what they will learn at the beginning of a lesson and then utilizes a Bible passage to prove the point. Eureka! reverses that model and teaches kids to read the Bible in a whole new way. Eureka! starts with a Scripture passage, gives students tools to explore the text, and then challenges them to discover what the passage says about God and his love for us.

FIVE FOUNDATIONS OF EUREKA! 1. DISCOVERY Kids are curious. They want to try it out and figure it out, learning and discovering things for themselves. Kids are more likely to remember and embrace discoveries they view as their own. Follow the curiosity of your kids and see where God leads!

The first week in a passage will focus on “What’s This Say about God?” The second week will focus on “What’s This Say about Us?” These discussion times will help kids identify and articulate their discoveries.

Hear It

■ Invite kids to prepare themselves to listen to the passage. ■ Have an adult read the Eureka! Bible Passage on page 3.

Tell It So Much Drama or Word Word ■ As a class, choose one of these two Tell It methods to tell the story. ■ Instructions for each are on page 4. The So Much Drama script is on page 3.

Embrace It ■ Invite kids to quietly read and reflect on the passage on their own using the Eureka! Bible Passage or their own Bible. ■ After 3-5 minutes of quiet reflection, invite a student or leader to read the Eureka! Bible Passage out loud again.

Record Your Discovery ■ Discuss faith discoveries made today. ■ Give kids time to write or draw a faith discovery on their Discovery Relic on page 4 of their DG. Make your own relic while kids make theirs. ■ Invite kids to share their completed relic with the class. ■ Close class in prayer.

Each student writes or draws a faith discovery they made on their Discovery Relic. These are personal faith discoveries, an inspiration they want to remember, or action steps they want to take in their Christian walk.

The Eureka! Bible Passage is an abridged version of the Bible passage for each expedition. Many of the Bible passages we explore can be pretty long, so this gives you a quick and condensed version of each passage, staying true to the most common Bible translations.

So Much Drama Storytelling Script

Cast: God, Power, Creativity, Skills God’s got His Power, Creativity, and Skills by his side. They high five each other. It's time to create!

Genesis 1:1—2:3 Eureka! Bible Passage

A. In the beginning God created the heavens. He created the earth. The earth was empty and dark. The ocean covered everything. The Spirit of God hovered over the deep empty waters. On the first day, God spoke and there was light everywhere. God separated the light places from the dark places. He called the light “day” and the dark “night.” B. On the second day, God made space between the waters. There was water above and water below the space. He called this space “sky.” C. On the third day, God spoke and the water under the sky gathered to one place. Dry ground appeared. God called it land. Plants began to grow on land. D. On the fourth day, God spoke and the stars took order. He made the sun to shine all day and the moon to shine at night. E. On the fifth day, God told fish to fill the sea and birds to fill the sky. He blessed them. F. On the sixth day, God spoke and all kinds of animals came on the earth. He told the animals to fill the land. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image and likeness.” He created people in His own image, both male and female. He blessed them and told them to rule over the sea and land. G. God looked over everything He had made, and it was all very good. By the seventh day, God had finished His work and He rested. He blessed the seventh day and set it aside as holy.

They all huddle up, sway back and forth, and say, “Let’s do this!” God says, “Day 1: Let’s make light.” Skills struts to the wall, flips the switch, and says, “Light!” God says, “Hey, Power. Use your karate skills and split that water!” Power takes a deep breath, chops, and yells, “HI-YA!” Just like that, the sky is created on Day 2. God says, “Now, look what my creativity can do.” Creativity blows wind all over the place! Its cheeks and eyes get huge. Land, plants, and trees appear. Day 3 is done. God says, “Power, grab the CreationCannon. We need a sun, moon, and stars.” Power straps on the gigantic CreationCannon, pulls the creation lever, and says, “Boom! Solar system up!” That’s Day 4. God says, “Skills. Day 5. Birds. Fish.” Skills gives a confident nod and says, “On it.” Skills walks in a circle, reaches up high and says, “Birdies!” It does it again and says, “Fishies.” God says, “Day 6: Let's make some creatures!" They all give a fist pump and say, “Sweet.” God says, “First, Creativity, make some creatures that walk on the ground.” Creativity grabs the CreationCannon from Power. Creativity sets the switch to land animals, looks through the scope, pushes the button, and says, “MOOOOO!” Next, God and His Power, Creativity, and Skills all kneel and mix the earth on the ground. Just like that. Humans. God looks at the humans and says, “In my image. Excellent.” They all stand up and smile big. God says, “Well, this all looks great! Day 7 is a day for rest.” They all softly pat one another on the back and then fall asleep standing up. The end.

The Tell It methods are interactive methods to explore, reenact, and enjoy the Bible passage. Most Tell It methods involve important storytelling prompts and help kids analyze and internalize different parts of the Bible passage. These activities also give kids an opportunity to Expedition Tips practice their listening, discussion, and teamwork skills.

Before You Explore

Like being a 5-star purple plum pudding chef, explorers do things a little differently. That’s why we put this Before You Explore section on the very last page. We know you understand. Expedition Tips are on the right and Tell It instructions are down below. Now tighten your torso rope and explore on!

■ Challenge Idea: Bust out your best Scottish-IrishBritish accent if you read Niki’s Journal out loud. ■ This Remember Verse reminds us that God created us on purpose. We belong to Him. He loves us like an artist loves her artwork. We were meant to be in relationship with Jesus. That’s why we explore His Word. That’s why we live in God’s love. ■ Your “stage” is simply a clear area in the front of the class. Referring to it as a stage during So Much Drama makes it way more fun for kids and leaders. ■ It’s tempting to just make the storytelling decisions on your own before class. This may save time and feel like less hassle, but it can hinder the learning and formation process from the group decisionmaking process. In short, storytelling preparation is just as valuable as the storytelling itself.

Word Word

Act out a light-hearted telling of the story as it is read by an adult narrator.

Take turns telling the story one word at a time.

1. Select an actor for each role on the script. 2 Don’t practice or rehearse. It’s totally okay for kids to be hearing the script for the first time as you read it for the performance. 3. Actors stay offstage until their character is mentioned. As you read the script, pause when moments of action or dialogue are required. 4. If an actor misses a cue, gently repeat the line until the actor follows the script. Keep it light-hearted. 5. When reading dialogue an actor repeats, say the line with emotion. For example, say whispered lines with a whisper voice, and angry lines with an angry voice. 6. If you need to give direction, keep it in the context of the storytelling method. Stay in character as the narrator. Don’t: “Say that again with more excitement.” Do: “Then he said it again like a cheerleader!”

1. Sit in a circle around a table or on the floor. Briefly discuss what happens in the beginning, middle, and final scene of the passage. 2. Have one person begin the story with one word. Going clockwise, each person takes a turn adding one word to build on the story. It might sound like this: “God. Created. A. Very. Bright. Light.” 3. Keep going around the circle until the story is complete. 4. The first time through will be pretty methodical. On the second try, encourage kids to add emotion and drama to their voice when needed. 5. Try it as often as you like, building confidence, detail, and fun each time. 6. Tip: With new kids who aren’t comfortable participating, just let them observe. 7. Challenge: Have each kid tell two words of the story. This is much trickier than it sounds!

EXPLORING QUESTIONS FOR OLDER ELEMENTARY KIDS These five “what” questions make up the foundation of a strong Bible study strategy (hermeneutic) and form the fabric of Eureka!. It won’t be long before your kids have these down pat. What’s That Word? Explore different words in the passage. Kids have much more confidence when they know the meaning of words. What’s Happening in the Passage? Explore the people, setting, and action of the passage. Understand it and enjoy it. Empathize with and appreciate the people in the passage. What’s Happening in the Bible? Explore a different part of God’s Word as context for our main passage. We see God’s big story unfolding in front of us. What’s This Say about God? God reveals himself through the Bible. God teaches us about himself and his love throughout the Bible. What’s This Say about Us? As we learn about God and embrace his love for us, how do we react? Who are we? How do we live in God’s love? 12

Heavens threw its arms in the air and said, “I’m alive!” Earth flopped its arms up and down and said, “I am soaking wet.” God held up one finger and said, “I think I’ll make light.” Heavens flipped on the invisible light switch with its pinky finger. God said, “Great first day!” Next, Heavens blew three big breaths. The sky appeared. Heavens wobbled around cause it made itself dizzy. God said, “Awesome second day!” Earth held up its arms and the plants grew. Then it spread its feet far apart and tree roots spread. God said, “What a third day!” Heavens wiggled its fingers and the sun and stars appeared. Then it puffed out its cheeks real big and the moon was created. God said, “Amazing fourth day!” Heavens puffed its cheeks again and gave two thumbs up. Earth put its arms down, jumped up, and started wiggling like a fish. Heavens said, “Looks fun!” It did the same thing. Earth blew a kiss toward the sky and birds flew in. God did a fist pump and said, “Fabulous fifth!” Earth stomped its feet. Animals are created. Heavens rode a horse. Earth rode a giraffe. They both had big cheesy smiles. God scratched His chin and said, “One more thing.” God looked at His arms, looked at His legs, looked at His feet, and looked at His hands. He jumped up and said, “People!” Heavens pointed and said, “Look, a man!” Earth pointed and said, “Look, a woman!” God patted them on the back and said, “Best sixth day ever!” They all put their hands behind their heads, leaned back and said, “Aw!” God said, “Day seven. Let’s rest.”

Create a symbol for each section of the passage and put them in order.

2. Invite a student to draw on an index card a symbol that represents that section. Do the same for each section of the passage. 3. Mix up the completed cards and place them face down in the middle of a table. Mix in 3-4 blank index cards to serve as decoys. Invite kids to gather around the table. 4. Start a timer and say, “Go!” One student will choose a card and turn it over. Moving clockwise around the table, each student will turn over a new card and attempt to place it in the correct order. Students can verbally help one another as needed. Blank cards are discarded. 5. Once the cards are in the right order, stop the timer, and record your time. Try again 2-3 times to see if the class’s speed improves.

What’s That Word? is a time set aside to explore a word kids may encounter during the expedition. This makes it easier for kids to understand the passage when they listen to the passage later in the expedition.

1 Here We Go! Hide the Kai and Scout cards (#49-52) from the Story Card deck. Have kids try to find the cards when they arrive. Play The Come Along Song from the Eureka! Jr. DVD or CD. Invite kids to come to your gathering spot (at a table, on the floor, etc.).

2 What’s That Word? Show the Bible picture from page 1 of this lesson. Invite kids to find the hidden word in the picture. Say belong out loud as a class. (Option: Pass out the Discovery Guides (DG) now and let kids find the hidden word in the picture on their own DG.) Chat about the word. Does anyone know what belong means? Belong means we are welcomed and included. The opposite of belong is to be left out. We feel sad when we are left out of a game or not invited to play with some friends. We can feel happy that we belong to Jesus! We are a part of His family! He loves us and always invites us to be with Him! Read the Remember Verse (provided in the next section). Invite kids to stand up when they hear belong and then sit down. Repeat the verse again—faster this time.

7 Exploration Stations Introduce the Exploration Stations you’ll be doing. Review your rules for the Exploration Stations (quiet voices, share items, etc.). Explore Creation Station: Explore nature items with hands, a magnifying glass, or by making a leaf rubbing. Let’s See! Story Station: Re-create the story with the Story Cards. Picture the Story Station: Color the picture on your Discovery Guide. Sculpt the Story Station: Use Play-Doh to make something from the story. Build the Story Station: Use the blocks to build something from the story. Invite kids to choose which station they go to. Kids can stay at one or visit multiple stations. As kids play, visit each station and ask questions about their play and how it relates to the story. Allow 15-20 minutes to explore. Announce when it’s almost time to stop. Bring kids back to the gathering area before cleaning up.

8 Share Your Discovery Invite kids to share what they discovered about the Bible story. Share what you discovered as you interacted with the kids. Remind kids to use their Discovery Guide to keep exploring at home. Pray as a group, thanking God for leading their discoveries. Use a Eureka! Jr. Stamp to stamp each kid’s Discovery Guide to show that they completed today’s expedition. Play Tidy-Up Song from the Eureka! Jr. DVD or CD as the kids clean up the room.
