Thank you for attending the 25th Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. We are excited about this year’s sale featuring an exceptional offering of horses! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones on sale day. Be sure to join us sale day, as we celebrate 25 years with our buyers!

Come to the sale grounds at 8:00 a.m. for the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity followed by the Ranch Horse Futurity. See sale horses in action starting at 9 a.m. for the Performance Preview and compare foals side by side during the Weanling Showcase. Visit with the breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2026 RQHBA Futurities. Breakfast and lunch will be available on the grounds.

About RQHBA

The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has since evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year; before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.

Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 12 member ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and southeastern Montana that are RQHBA members, there are also high quality invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.

Sale Requirements

All horses sold at the RQHBA Sale are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian sale day. All foals sold in the sale will have AQHA 5 Panel test for both sire and dam (HYPP, GBED, HERDA, PSSM1, MH). Those results of the 5 Panel test for both sire and dam will be posted at the sale.

Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale.

Quality of Horses

As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All 2025 foals are eligible for the 2026 Don Brunner Yearling Futurity and the RQHBA 2 & 3 year old Ranch Horse Futurities as they come of age. Ranch visits are always welcome. All horses will have a clean bill of health and coggins to travel anywhere in the country.

You will find the member, guest consignor and invitational rider names and phone numbers here in the catalog. We encourage you to contact each individual about the horses that interest you.

All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented for sale. Your visit is always welcome!

1. The highest bidder is to be the buyer. If any dispute arises between two or more bidders, sole authority to settle the dispute is reserved by the auctioneer and his decision will be final. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

2. Every effort has been made to ensure correctness in the catalog and in most cases information quoted is taken from official records. However, RQHBA, sales management, auctioneer, announcer assume and will accept no responsibility for errors or omissions. Announced changes in catalog information on sale day take precedence over printed material.

3. RQHBA, sales management, Besler’s Cadillac Ranch and consignors shall not be responsible for any accident that may occur to spectators, buyers, horses or loss or injury in any way to the sale, during or after the sale.

4. Payment in full must be made to the sales clerk immediately after the sale. Terms of the sale are cash, personal check or credit card (US Funds). We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. All credit card purchases will incur an additional 4% fee per transaction.

5. All known blemishes or defects will be called before bidding begins.

6. All horses become the responsibility and the property of the buyer when they leave the sale ring. Buyer must make arrangements for the care of horses at their own risk until delivery is taken.

7. We strongly urge buyers to thoroughly examine horses that interest them. All sales are absolute and final.

8. No horses will be sold before the sale.

9. Registration papers: registration papers will go home with buyer day of sale. 10. Sales management, RQHBA, the auctioneer and the announcer act as agents for the seller, but assume no liability. Any representations made are between the seller and the buyer.

11. Releases: No horses are to be removed until settled for. In order for horses to be removed from the grounds you must show a sales receipt. Make sure all information on receipt is correct. Also, be sure to give the receipt to the person ultimately responsible for removing your horse from the sale grounds.

WHY AQHA 5 PANEL GENETIC TESTING?

As an association that believes in our motto, “The Sale Where You Can Buy With Confidence,” RQHBA has instituted that all sires and dams of weanlings sold through this sale must have an AQHA 5 Panel Genetic Disease Test. Below is a description of what those tests mean. Test results will be available on sale day. We hope this will help you make an informed decision that allows you to buy with confidence. AQHA has just this year added a ‘6th’ disease to their panel this year. Some horses will have that additional test, but most will not. It is a work in progress adding this 6th test to all of our sires and mares.

GENETIC DISEASE RESULTS AND DESCRIPTIONS

Genes come in pairs; each parent contributes one copy to the offspring. With respect to the autosomal dominant genetic diseases listed below (HYPP, PSSM, and MH), only one defective gene is necessary to express the genetic disease in question. Such gene can be inherited from either of the parents or from both of the parents. With respect to autosomal recessive genetic disease listed below (GBED and HERDA), typically, two copies of an abnormal gene (two copies = a pair) must be present in order for the horse to show signs of the genetic defect in question. Horses with only one copy of the defective gene are considered “carriers”.

GBED - Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency. Fatal disease of newborn foals caused by defect in glycogen storage. Affects heart and skeletal muscles and brain. Inherited as a recessive gene.

Possible results:

N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing GBED gene.

N/G Carrier - Heterozygous (one normal and one GBED gene).

G/G Affected - horse has two copies of the GBED gene.

HERDA - Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia. Skin disease characterized by hyperextensible skin, scarring, and severe lesions along the back of affected horses. Typical onset is around 2 years of age. Inherited as a recessive disease.

Possible results:

N/N Normal - horse does not have the HERDA gene.

N/HRD Carrier - horse carries one copy of the HERDA gene.

HRD/HRD Affected - horse has two copies of the HERDA gene.

HYPP - Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. Muscle disease caused by defect in sodium channel gene that causes involuntary muscle contraction and increased level of potassium in blood. Inherited as a dominant disease. Two copies of the defective gene produce more severe signs than one copy. Possible results:

N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing HYPP gene.

N/H Hyperkalemic - Heterozygous (one normal and one HYPP gene).

H/H Affected - horse has two copies of the HYPP gene.

MH - Malignant Hyperthermia. Rare but life-threatening skeletal muscle disease triggered by exposure to volatile anesthetics (halothane), depolarizing muscle relaxants (succinylcholine), and stress. Presumed inheritance as a dominant disease.

Possible results:

N/N Normal - horse does not have the MH gene.

N/MH Affected - horse has one copy of the MH gene.

MH/MH Affected - horse has two copies of the MH gene.

PSSM1 - Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy Type 1. Muscle disease characterized by accumulation of abnormal complex sugars in skeletal muscles. Signs include muscle pain, stiffness, skin twitching, sweating, weakness and reluctance to move. Inherited as a dominant disease.

Possible results:

N/N Normal - horse does not have the PSSM1 gene.

N/PSSM1 Affected - horse has one copy of the PSSM1 gene.

PSSM1/PSSM1 Affected - horse has two copies of the PSSM1 gene.

MYHM - Myosin-Heavy Chain Myopathy. A genetic muscle disease that can result in two distinct clinical disease presentations that both involve muscle loss or damage and are linked to the same genetic variant. A horse with MYHM is prone to presenting with one or both during their lifetime, while some horses with the mutation may never experience symptoms.

Possible results:

N/N Normal - horse does not have the MYHM gene.

N/MYHM Affected - horse has one copy of the MYHM gene

MYHM/MYHM Affected - horse has two copies of the MYHM gene.

Welcome to the 25th Anniversary RQHBA Sale! We are very honored to be a part of this great organization of quarter horse breeders. Crago Cattle Company was recognized by AQHA as a 50 Consecutive years breeder! What an accomplishment that was! It’s hard to believe another year has flown by! It just keeps getting busier and busier! Our kids, Casen (16) and Kyler (13) are a huge help on the ranch- calving, branding, sorting, lambing, docking, halter breaking, haying, irrigating or whatever else needs done. They have kept us on the go this spring/summer traveling to High school and Junior High rodeos, 4-H rodeo, dance recital and barrel races. Snapchat is a 3 year old bay gelding that we bred and raised. He is by our late Loves Jessie James stud out of MC Lily. MC Lily was a money earner in Reined Cowhorse shown by Mike Nehl. Welcome to the 25th anniversary sale of RQHBA! This is our 11th year being a part of this sale, and we are proud to be a part of its success! What a great start to the year we had! So blessed with great moisture, and got to watch the grass grow!!

Our lives continue to revolve around the western lifestyle that we as a family love so much - brandings, moving cows, preg checking, shippings…all activities that we look forward to as a family! We continue to ride ‘home raised’ horses, but have added a few ‘potential broodmares’ for the future!

Curtis finished his first year at college, and continues to ride colts and help at home. Raelee finished her sophomore year of high school this year, and competed in the girls cutting in high school rodeo. She really loves it, and is working with Dave to try and get 2 of our own finished.

This year was the end of an era, as we laid Boonylensma to rest. He was 26 years old, and it was time. He did get 2 of his mares bred back for 2026! Boony left a lasting impact on our program!! Shield Five Ole Cat has really stepped up and fulfilled the hopes we have had for him as a stud. He crosses really well on the Boony daughters. Boonys Cee is our young stallion, and we have been very happy with what he has produced for us!

The Wetz family purchased the home ranch in 1907. LeRoy and Shirley (Packer) own the Wetz Stirrup Ranch since 1997. It is located 16 miles east of Vale, South Dakota along the Belle Fourche River. They raise horses for the ranch and arena work over 45 years. They like to say they raise one horse trailer horses with Good Bone, Brains, and disposition. The Stirrup Ranch QH was awarded the 2015 South Dakota Producers of the Year. Family is important, they have always tried to keep themselves, kids and grandkids mounted with confirmation, good feet, legs to do a full day’s work. Each year we offer a select group of Invitational Riders as a sale highlight. Once again, our Invitational consignors have brought another set of high quality horses! Many have spent time in the branding pen and doing all of the ranch chores. Whether you are looking for an arena prospect, a barrel horse, a reliable ranch horse, a trail horse, a 4-H horse, or a team roping horse - we have something that will work.

There is also a group of exceptional lead in horses that have all of the basics done with them and are ready for you to take on to the next step.

RIding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale. Come to the preview starting at 9:30 a.m. to see them work. All horses are vet checked for soundness and will have health and coggins to go anywhere in the United States.

SCRATCH

Scratch is our 9 year old bay gelding that we’ve owned since he was a baby. We have raised him and done all the riding on him. He is easy to get on at just under 15 hands tall and is stout enough to get any job done. Scratch is friendly, easy to catch and can handle long periods of time off. He rides one handed and is cowy while still letting you put him where you want him. We have used him to work colts, pasture roping, check cows, brandings and sort on. He has been a quick catch to get something done in a hurry to all day gathering in the breaks. • Original papers are to be presented for show registration to verify ownership.

• Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (Entry fees, stall, etc.).

• Payout will be $600 for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place.

• RQHBA members and weanling consignors are not eligible to compete for the futurity funds.

Jackpot in-hand trail class for yearlings! Enter day of futurity for $25. All entry fees jackpotted back. Obstacles may include: side pass, back through, gate, trot, pivot, picking up feet.

RQHBA RANCH HORSE FUTURITY

Any horse purchased from a member through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2025 can compete for money!! Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against others in their age division for $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place, per class. Entry fees are $100 paid by Aug 1. Following is what the 2 and 3 year olds will be judged on:

1. Gate (Horseback).

2. Bridge (Walk Over).

3. Logs (Trot Thru).

4. Log (Drag Figure 8).

5. Pattern will be posted morning of the futurity.

6. Dismount on the right side and pickup the right rear leg.

7. Exit Arena

• First Place in each class wins $500, second place wins $250, and third place wins $100.

• In the event of a tie, the horse with the highest reining score will win.

• Participants will have three attempts at each obstacle before passing. Participants have the option of skipping any obstacle the rider feels would not do their pattern justice.
