As I write this article, there is an estimated 600,000 people embarking on the beautiful Black Hills town of Sturgis. Needless to say, I have not, nor do I have many friends that have attended the rally. For some reason, it does not attract many farmers or ranchers, but after hearing about some rancher friends who decided they would like to go to the rally, and how the missus only made it to the first gas station when she noticed a neighbor couple gassing up their van and she caught a ride back home with them. The husband made the journey solo and the two never planned that type of vacation again. The story gave me fuel for the following poem:

He said heâ€™d heard folks talking about that rally and the hogs and the concerts and the people, why they say they come in mobs! The first thing that she asked him was, â€œHow the heck theyâ€™d go?â€? â€˜Cause a twenty-year old pickup would sure not fit that show.

This sure was no vacation, a worse time sheâ€™d never had and she never knew a sweaty shirt could ever smell so bad. The blowing locks of hubbyâ€™s hair was all that she could see and anywhere besides that bike is where sheâ€™d rather be.

He told her not to worry, he knew just what to do because he found a motorcycle that was just as good as new. It was in a want-ad section in a paper that heâ€™d saw and eight hundred dollars isnâ€™t bad for a good used Yamaha.

She begged to go back home, but her voice? He never heard. And he never would have stopped, if it wasnâ€™t for that bird that hit him in the face just West of Belvidere; . . . it was there that he discovered her no longer in the rear.

He bought that good used cycle and broke it in real good as heâ€™d ride around the barnyard and the whole darned neighborhood. Then he welded up a trailer in his shop one rainy day so they could take their tent along and have a place to stay.

They say a trucker found her when he stopped to check his load; she was laying moaning, groaning in the ditch beside the road. At first he was real startled and thought she might be dead but the only thing that hurt her was a bump upon the head.

Perhaps it was the winter that was bad and too darned cold, or maybe turning fifty made him afraid of getting old. Whatever was the problem that was lodged between his ears, the whim that overtook him nearly drove his wife to tears.

Well, she thought that heâ€™d gone crazy, but it got worse than that; he started growing whiskers and let his hair grow down his back. He said that he should look the part, so he would fit right in, and told her she should buy some clothes that showed a little skin.

When hubby found sheâ€™d left him, he at first went into shock; â€Śthen he met a little â€œdollyâ€? working in a tattoo shop. They say he gave up ranching for the cycle and that dame and he never works a lick â€Śbut it pays about the same.

It happened one spring day last year, when sorting off some cows and when they broke for coffee and headed to the house he told her he was thinking that the two should take a break and he thought a nice vacation was something they should take.

They say she almost killed him with the look upon her face, but it seemed that it was no time when she would take her place behind him on that Yamaha, the trailer hooked behind, and off they went for Sturgis, like the blind leading the blind.

The wife? Sheâ€™s with the trucker and they make a happy pair â€˜tho sheâ€™s still receiving treatment under psychiatric care. Theyâ€™re trucking for a sawmill in the mountains, hauling logs, and are known to mow down cycles, especially Yamahas.

Well, the first thing that she thought of was heâ€™d probably want to go to Cheyenne or to Deadwood to some blasted rodeo, but he said that come next August, when the haying was all done, heâ€™d like to go to Sturgis and take in all the fun.

They hadnâ€™t gone an hour on this seven-hour trip when it felt like rigor mortis had settled in her hips. The sun was bearing down, her skin was turning red, as thoughts of home and air-conditioner were fogging up her head.

The moral of this story is in case you need a break and decide to go to Sturgis, donâ€™t make the same mistake. If you want to save your marriage, youâ€™d better make the trip alone; so let this be a warning gals, â€œleave your husbands home!â€?
