Robin Reinhold “A Warm Heart
This little calf found a sheltered place to weather out a storm, but he still got pretty chilled. As I watched our daughter, Molly, tenderly check him over, I was blessed by her attentiveness. Upon examination, she decided he needed some warming up, so she scooped him up in her arms and carried him to the shop where he spent some time in front of the wood burning stove. Molly rubbed him down in front of the fire, and soon he was perked up and ready to go find his mama. A little TLC goes a long ways.

ot many would draw a correlation between painting fine art and growing tomatoes.
Even David Graham smiles when explaining how the vocation he has become well known for across the West – cowboy and Western artist – diversified last year to include his latest business – vegetable farming. “There’s really not a huge connection, but they’re both something I love to do,” he said. “I started a vegetable gardening business during high school that helped fund my college education. Ever since then, I’ve always wanted to try it on a grander scale.”

AG Pride 2017
A native of Eastern Montana, Graham grew up in a family with deep roots in the western way of life on both his parents’ sides. He honed his self-taught craft of painting fine art while completing a degree in business management at Montana State University, and helping his father, Pat Graham, manage a large ranch near Terry, Mont. After several years of painting part-time and working part-time with his father, Graham moved to Billings, Mont., to focus solely on his art, and has made his living this way for nearly 10 years. His realistic paintings of cowboys, Native Americans, wildlife and the Old West hang in galleries in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Arizona. But big city life didn’t provide the muse for the beauty he depicts on canvas. “I’ve long had a desire to move to the country in order to gain more inspiration for my art. When the opportunity arose to move back home AND try my hand at large scale vegetable growing, I jumped at it.”

Those who know David Graham know he doesn’t just jump. He leaps all in – with thoughtful, meticulous planning – but all in, nevertheless. The detail he puts into the feathered headdresses and cotton candy Montana clouds in his paintings match the care he gives to laying out his 2-acre vegetable plot. The authenticity of the frosty breath flaring from a horse’s nostrils on the canvas of an early morning sunrise scene parallel the perfection of brimming baskets of colorful vegetables ready for sale. Even his farmers’ market display mirrors an art show exhibition, surpassing other simple tables of produce with a stamp that is mostly artist with a healthy dose of marketing savvy added in. What David Graham does, he does well. Hatchet Creek Farms is located on what was previously a sagebrush flat alongside an alfalfa field owned by his brother-in-law and sister, Will and Jennifer Nielsen, near Fallon, Mont. Inside a professional-grade deer fence Graham constructed with his father lies an intricate irrigation system that pumps water from a ditch and delivers it to row after row of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, squash, pumpkins, beets, carrots, onions, flowers and numerous other crops. Last year he planted more than 2,000 tomato plants and over 1,000 pepper plants.

Graham also constructed a 14’ x 60’ greenhouse in the backyard where he grew his tomato crops during college. Now all his transplants are grown here, starting in March and April. By the end of May, Graham will have all the plants and additional seeds in the ground, with harvest beginning in July. With plant numbers in the thousands that require full-time care during the production season, does Graham consider himself a large-scale gardener or a small-scale farmer? “I think it’s a combination of both,” he said. “I consider it farming in the sense that I’m growing my vegetable crops with the intention of making a profit by selling them. But it looks more like gardening in the sense that I don’t use any large machinery in the process. All my crops are planted and harvested by hand, just as in a smaller homesized garden.” He added that the term “market gardening” has become common among the farmers’ market growers to describe their unique scope of production. In many ways the garden is a family affair, and a welcome project for a family that enjoys working together. Last year Graham’s mother, Lanette, helped transplant plants, harvest and attend

markets. His brother-in-law helped with farming and leveling the plot, and even his 2-year-old nephew got in on carrying tomato plants. This year his sister hopes to contribute more given that her growing project from last summer, a baby girl, is now ready to get in on the action too. “Our love of gardening and working together goes back to our large garden at our parents’ house,” said Jennifer Nielsen. “But now, the family venture has expanded. It has been a wonderful opportunity to teach our son, Landon, how vegetables are grown through lots of hard work. And what a little boy’s dream – digging and playing in the dirt and mud!” With the help of family, Graham sells his produce at weekly farmers’ markets in nearby Miles City and Glendive. Additionally he has a small stand at the local convenience store in Terry, and markets direct from the farm. Top: David Graham’s 2-year-old nephew, Landon helps plant tomatoes. Middle: Graham’s mother, Lanette, helps transplant plants. Bottom: Before launching his vegetable garden business, Graham conducted extensive research on market gardening and various practices and equipment. This led him to special order a unique, large-scale gardening tiller recommended by most market gardeners. 12

“I’ve contemplated the idea of offering CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares,” said Graham, “where customers pay a flat fee up front for the whole season, then they are supplied with a weekly variety of fresh produce throughout the entire 2- or 3-month growing season.” He is also considering expanding his pumpkin patch to open up to the community a “pick-your-own experience,” and would like to drive more on-farm sales. Graham says one of the biggest learning curves of his first year included figuring out which crops and varieties he wanted to grow again and which could maybe be dropped off of the roster. “I grew so many different varieties of tomatoes and peppers, for instance, that it was a great opportunity to rate how well each one did.” With the business acumen of a farmer who wrote a complete strategic plan with detailed

In addition to gallery sales, Graham also markets his art through venues such as the Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City, Western Art Week in Great Falls, and the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City. High quality giclee prints are sold in Billings at Rimrock Art & Frame and at various shows, and also available through his website: www.davidgrahamart.com.
financing, budgets and projections before launching this venture, he adds, “This coming summer, I will be concentrating exclusively on the ones that performed the best last year, which should make production increase and make better use of my space.” He adds the second year will hopefully be less stressful without the challenges of construction and infrastructure and other start-up hiccups, and he will have more time to dedicate to his primary vocation. Admirers of Grahams’ artwork who may have worried the spade has replaced the paintbrush can rest assured that Graham is still first and foremost an artist. “Last summer was difficult for my painting, since the farm required so much time and energy to get it up and going. I’m looking forward to finding more time to create art this year.” Whether the reds, yellows, greens and purples are peeping through the soil, or found in the smear of oil on his artists’ palette, Graham has a passion for creating beauty and sharing it with others. “I find it extremely rewarding to be able to grow and sell a quality food product such as freshly grown veggies, and then to hear from my customers how much they enjoy it. It’s much like creating a painting, and having the satisfaction of knowing that someone is displaying it in
their home years later. It’s very humbling.” With a fan base that stretches across the region and nation, his biggest supporters still live just across the road. “We are so proud of him, and his endless list of talents never ceases to amaze me,” said Nielsen. “But, when I think about it, I’m not at all surprised he loves gardening. The similarities to painting are actually so evident. The ground is his canvas; he starts from scratch with something completely bare, and slowly … with time, the plants and produce complete his ‘painting.’” If you step back and sees the easel and the dirt as one, the colors and the detail in Graham’s diverse work, maybe you’ll agree art and farming really aren’t that different after all.
Graham notes that one of the most rewarding parts of his work is all the great people he has gotten to meet and interact with on a continual basis through selling both art and produce.

n 1973, Gary and Amy Cammack opened the doors to their general store in Stoneville, an unincorporated
community in western South Dakota, and when the opportunity to grow their business arose, the Cammacks jumped on it. They purchased the feed mill just down the road in Union Center, opening the doors to Cammack Ranch Supply in the spring of 1979.
“Always, from our very first day in operation, we have been working to solve problems for producers in the livestock business,” said Cammack.
The Evolution of a Ranch Supply Store Around the same time they were setting up shop, Gary and Amy were also starting out with their own ranching operation. Being ranchers themselves gives the Cammacks a unique understanding of the products that work in ranching and has guided the store’s main focus – helping livestock owners, and more specifically, cattle producers.
“Always, from our very first day in operation, we have been working to solve problems for producers in the livestock business,” said Cammack. In a business that pretty much lives and dies with the cattle market, it’s important to diversify and be in a state of constant evolution, coming up with new products that fit customer needs. “Something we recently started selling is a completely foldable field harrow that is run on hydraulics. We’re getting great feedback from our customers and have been selling out of them just about as fast as we can assemble them,” said Cammack. The store has also made a name for itself over the last 10-20 years selling windbreaks, portable corrals, and most notably, water delivery systems. The store moves roughly 300 miles of pipe each year to ranchers who need a way to get water to their livestock. Over the last 38 years, Cammack Ranch Supply has grown from a small local business into a regional business, serving customers in their active trade area that covers as many as six states. With the addition of an online store, they are now able to ship a variety of products nationwide.
Union Center the Unlikely Home of Business With as few as 50 folks living inside its city limits, Union Center, South Dakota, is what most would probably refer to as an unlikely spot to set up shop. But, don’t let this little map dot or its unincorporated status fool you. Union Center is not only the home of Cammack Ranch Supply, but also several other successful, community-minded small businesses.
Gary and Amy Cammack have participated in several Custer State Park buffalo roundups.
“Per capita, gross product moved out of Union Center would likely rival any large city in South Dakota. It’s always good to have a business on a paved highway,” said Cammack. “Of course being a business person in a small town is not without its challenges. You’re always going to have those occasional petty differences of opinion. But at the end of the day you realize, that you need each other,” said Cammack. In addition to their store front and online shop, Cammack Ranch Supply also hosts three major promotional events each year. They kick the year off hosting a booth at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo’s trade show, something they have done for all of the 37 years that the Black Hills Stock Show has been held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Every April Cammack Ranch Supply hosts their Annual Ag Trade Show and Pancake Feed Anniversary Celebration. This was the 38th year for the two-day event that draws nearly 600 visitors and more than 50 vendors to the Union Center Community Center. This year also marks the 15th annual Cammack Ranch Supply Rancher Round-up. The Rancher Round-up includes a trade show, ranch rodeo, free steak fry, and some sort of entertainment whether a cowboy poet like Baxter Black or a dance courtesy of a live band.

Cammack Gives Back “Last year two of or our Union Center residents became ill. Within 30 days of each other, our community held two fundraisers, raising upwards of $30,000 apiece. That type of generosity really speaks to the camaraderie of rural America,” Cammack It’s that type of generosity that Cammack Ranch Supply and several other area businesses and individuals displayed with they sent a semi load of wood posts south, to fire ravaged Ashland, Kansas back in March. Union Center was at the center of the Atlas Blizzard of October 2013. Nearly 20,000 head of cattle were lost within a 40 mile radius of the small town in west central South Dakota. Of that, the Cammacks personally lost 125 head.

“In the aftermath of Atlas, I was asked to do several interviews. And, I don’t think I realized just how much the storm had affected me until I was in front of those reporters. That was the first time I had ever personally experienced devastation like that. And, really we made out fairly good, considering. It was also the first time I had experienced the overwhelming generosity of strangers. It’s pretty hard not to pay it forward after something like that,” Cammack said. Gary has also been involved in county and state government for the past several years. He has served as a Meade County commissioner,
representative to the South Dakota State House of Representatives, and is currently serving his second term as a state Senator. In addition, Gary is the sitting president of the South Dakota Retailers Association. His service and advocacy to small business earned Cammack Ranch Supply the 2016 America’s Retail Champion of the Year award given by the National Retail Federation.

“Gary is a true grassroots advocate and as a leader in the retail industry, he ensures that retail’s voice is heard in a wide range of policy discussions. By staying involved with all levels of government, Gary is helping to advance the public policy agenda for retailers, their employees and customers in communities large and small across America,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay on the NRF’s website. In addition to their store, the Cammacks’ ranch has also been on the receiving end of national awards. In early 2017, the Cammack Ranch was presented the National Association of Conservation Districts Olin Sims Conservation Leadership Award. The ranch has also been the runner up for the South Dakota Leopold award on more than one occasion.
A Growing Family and Community Blessed with four boys, the Cammacks are the grandparents to ten grandkids. It isn’t just the Cammack family that is experiencing rapid population growth. The Union Center community has also seen a significant influx of young people returning to the area, and that has Gary fairly excited for the future. “Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen a fairly large insurgence of young people coming back and settling down in the area. And, it is great! There are 17 kids enrolled in just the kindergarten and first grade – that’s huge for our little rural school and our community!” said Cammack.

CONTROL FLIES! Use Kay Dee Products with Altosid® IGR
Prepare Your Cattle
• When horn flies reach 100-200 per animal, it’s time to consider controlling them. • Feeding Kay Dee Mineral with Altosid® IGR before infestations occur can save producers money.
Fly Control is Key to Maximize Profit
• The horn fly is responsible for an estimated $700 million loss in the U.S. beef industry. • Flies are responsible for depressed gains, increased feed intakes, decreased feed efficiency, and pinkeye infections.
Did You Know?
• Flies can develop a resistance to fly control agents when using ear tags. IGR provides effective fly control year after year, with no chance of developing a resistance.
When IGR is excreted in the manure, a safe and synthetic analog stops development of horn flies at the pupal stage, breaking the life cycle.

Indian Youth Launch Production Ag Businesses By Amanda Radke
I
n December 2016, hundreds of Native Americans from across the country traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., to attend the Intertribal Agriculture Council’s (IAC) 30th Annual Membership Meeting. Held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo, the event focused on achieving food sovereignty, promoting Indian use of Indian rescues and connecting tribal enterprises and individual producers with federal government agencies and leaders in the agricultural field for opportunities to further develop agricultural businesses. The IAC was established in 1987, “to provide a unified effort to promote change in Indian Agriculture for the benefit of Indian People,” and IAC leaders talked passionately at the annual meeting about ways production agriculture, and achieving independence through food, can address ongoing issues — health, economic and social, to name a few.

TRI-STATE LIVESTOCK NEWS
AG Pride 2017
Helping to put this message into practice is Kelsey Ducheneaux, IAC youth projects coordinator, who hails from Eagle Butte, S.D. “We work hard to foster a relationship with all of our amazing young leaders across Indian Country, and it’s been such a joy Kelsey Ducheneaux, to be able to celebrate their vic- IAC youth projects tories in pursuing their dreams,” coordinator said Ducheneaux. “For many, this PHOTOS PROVIDED BY is something that they attribute KELSEY DUCHENEAUX to the support of the IAC. The IAC has since worked to improve Indian participation in conservation and credit programs that our non-Indian counterparts had regularly used; as well as developed an American Indian Foods export readiness program for those producers who are adding value to their products and are ready for overseas trade; and most recently, the development of a youth leadership development program second-tonone, where Indian youth are inspired to be the change in their communities.”
Ducheneaux listed several examples of Indian youth pursuing sustainable food solutions through production agriculture careers. “There are young ladies in San Diego who are starting a compositing cooperative where they deliver buckets with the ‘do’s and don’t’s’ of composting on the lid and collect them weekly to develop soil along a vacant lot in their neighborhood,” said Ducheneaux. “There’s also a young man from Michigan who has started a farm fresh egg and poultry meat operation to integrate with his brother’s aquaponics and greenhouse system. Both of these young men have begun distributing their products to local schools through the Farm-to-School initiative.” She said there are IAC youth from across the country who are pursuing unique food production careers, and their success goes hand-in-hand with IAC’s message of promoting Indian agriculture and addressing problems in Indian country. “When the Europeans arrived on this continent, they found people who were engaged in 100 percent sustainable food production,” said Ducheneaux. “We’ve found that some of the most replicable and sustainable models descend from our traditional indigenous cultures, surrounding food production. We will continue to empower our tribal producers
with the knowledge, skills, and training necessary to become food producers again. The poverty will be addressed through value-added economic activity on the reservations; locally grown and produced food that is more attuned to the dietary needs of the local community possesses the ability to address the health issues. Ultimately, a reconnection with our food source will rectify the social problems, which are more realistically symptoms of poverty, rather than the self-inflicted problems they are often perceived as. The IAC provides the foundation of knowledge upon which our Indian ag producers can become food producers once again, making our broken food systems a discussion of the past.” While the growing season for fruits and vegetables may be short in locations like South Dakota, one product that grows well here is cattle. Carlyle Ducheneaux, a rancher from the Cheyenne Sioux River Tribe, is passionate about helping the next generation of beef producers get their start. In 2017, he’s assisted five youth with securing Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans to get their beef herds started. “I had a young kid who is good friends with my son, and I asked him one day what he wanted to do when he grew up, and he said he wanted to be a rancher just

I’m very blessed to have this ranch, and I can’t think of a better occupation. I think these kids will learn a lot about managing money, keeping records and the responsibility of taking care of livestock. For kids who get the chance to work in agriculture and spend time on a ranch, they learn a different perspective about life. They see calves being born, and they see cattle die. They learn how to work hard and take risks. I’m hoping it’s a good experience for them, and that they’ll learn important lessons along the way.” “Carlyle is teaching these kids about land and herd management, as well as what it takes to be in an effective partnership agreement,” said Kelsey Ducheneaux. “His project with these kids really stands out.” To learn more about IAC, check out www.americanindianfoods.com.

55 years of veterinary medicine
Dr. Frank Anders
I
By Maria Tussing
f you go to Crawford, Nebraska and ask for Frances Anders, you may get a blank stare. After a few seconds the light will dawn and you’ll likely hear, “Oh—you mean Doc.” “Doc” Anders has been a vet since John F. Kennedy was president. His first vet truck cost a little over $2,000. In the 55 years since, he estimates he’s preg-checked half a million cows and seen about as many changes in the world of veterinary medicine. Anders grew up in Kansas and Wyoming, where his dad worked on ranches and a livestock market, and Armor Creameries, until they closed. There were four in his high school graduating class in Hawk Springs, Wyoming. Uncle Sam gave Anders a two-year stint in Fort Bliss, Texas, during the Korean War, working on guided missiles for the Army. “When I come back from the service I decided then I was going to try to become a vet,” he said. The GI bill paid for four years of higher education. Frank spent two of those years at the University of Wyoming, then four years at Colorado State University. The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)
program, which is still active today, helped pay for his tuition at CSU. “It wasn’t that much. Out of state tuition in Colorado was less than $100. The whole tuition was probably less than $6,000.” Before he finished college, Anders met Alice one night when she was out with his buddy. Anders was out with a different girl, but when he came back one weekend and couldn’t get ahold of his regular girl, he called Alice. It turned out that his regular girl was out with his buddy. The switch worked out and his buddy married Frank’s old flame and Frank married Alice with three years left in vet school. Alice worked in administration at CSU while Frank finished his degree, then had three kids—Art, Kent and Taenia—and helped with book work in the clinic.
Frank and Alice Anders worked together for nearly 50 years, providing veterinary care to western Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. 32

Frank Anders has served his community as a veterinarian and in various other service capacities for more than 50 years.
Part of the education cost assistance program required Anders to return to Wyoming to practice for a year for every year of assistance he received. When he got a job in Edgemont, South Dakota—10 miles from Wyoming—the state figured that was close enough. He worked with another vet and did mostly horse and cattle work, back when nearly every pasture was dotted with the signature red and white of the Hereford breed, with an occasional Angus or Charolais. The owner of the practice was only five years out of vet school himself, but he’d built his practice up to where he was running day and night—emphasis on night.
Frank recalls one night that was especially memorable, because he couldn’t remember it. “When you get a call and you get up and dress and go to the clinic and get the vehicle out and go down the road a couple miles and wake up, it puts a fear to you. I knew where I was going and I was headed there, but I didn’t wake up until I was headed down the road a ways. When the phone rang you answered it and you got ready to go. After that, if I got a call I would either go drink some coffee or a glass of milk. It would take a few minutes for me to get awake before I’d leave the house. It didn’t happen again because once is enough.”

In a time when the phrase “heifer bull” had yet to be coined and heifer calves were weaned at 3-400 pounds, caesarians were a major component of their work. “We did a couple hundred caesarians a year. This last year I had the biggest year for caesarians in a long time—I think I did nine.
During Frank’s first fall, the practice got a contract with the state to recertify the state in tuberculosis. “We had to test so many cows for TB. I don’t remember how many thousand we tested that fall...” Tuberculosis testing required injecting the whole herd one day, then coming back three days later to check for swelling at the injection site, which would indicate the presence of tuberculosis. Frank remembers a few positives, but once follow-up tests were done, they turned out to be false alarms.

There wasn’t a lot of clinic work, with equipment and medicine close at hand. “You done a lot of mileage. You’d drive 2-3,000 miles a month. It’s a big area out there. We covered 40 miles in all directions,” he said. “At that time there was a lot of night work.”

GIANT RUBBER WATER TANKS In a time when the phrase “heifer bull” had yet to be coined and heifer calves were weaned at 3-400 pounds, caesarians were a major component of their work. “We did a couple hundred caesarians a year. This last year I had the biggest year for caesarians in a long time—I think I did nine. “They didn’t even talk about heifer bulls. You tried to get a bull that threw small ones. Then we did some work on pelvic measurements on heifers. You’d find strains of cattle that had much smaller pelvises than others. We’d find a herd and could figure out the bull that was doing it. We could tell just from the looks of the heifer if it was going to have trouble or not. Some of those heifers, the pelvis was so small you could hardly get your hand in with two feet in the pelvis. There was no way they could have a calf normally. We’d do a caesarian and the calf would only weigh 50-60 pounds.” The ranchers worked with the vets to breed the troublesome pelvises out of the herds, and now they’ve got larger pelvises and smaller calves. “We kind of worked ourselves out of work there,” he said. Another calving ease trait they tried to breed for was flatter foreleg bones, as opposed to big, round ones. “This helped and they worked out of the big calves and little heifers,” he said.

“We started with some virus vaccines at weaning and that seemed to help. They kept finding new viruses and bacteria that was causing these things. They found out if they used a virus vaccine they’d had less troubles with a bacteria. If you’ve got a virus, you can’t treat it. We’ve got no antibiotic or anything that will work against a virus. So we work on the secondary infection and the body has to take care of the virus,” Frank said. Before the introduction of broad-spectrum vaccines, sickness in a herd was fast-moving and far-reaching. “We’d run the whole herd through and give them antibiotics, rather than today going out to treat two or three or four. Even today, though, no vaccine is 100 percent. You get up to about 80 percent, is a real good vaccine. Now, if you get in contact with something going on, you’ve only got to deal with 20-30 percent of the herd.”

In those days, ranchers counted on the vet to doctor anything that was sick. “We done most of the work ourselves. That’s why we did so much running. They’d have two or three sick and we’d drive 30-40 miles. That’s when they didn’t have much for medicine—penicillin and sulfa pills, tetracycline, terramycin.” While the majority of the work was of the bovine and equine variety, in the early decades of his practice Frank worked a lot of sheep. “In the fall you’d write health certs on 25,000 lambs that were going out of state,” he said. Sheep scab—a contagious disease caused by a mite—was a major issue, so dipping sheep was mandatory. “We had dipping vats around the country. The sheep all had to be dipped, which was quite a job. They didn’t like to go in the water at all. You’d be pushing, and even wearing gloves you’d wear blisters on the ends of your fingers. You’d grab them by the wool and push them in the dipping vat.
WINDBREAK that never needs repair

Some old ewes with all that wool would get so heavy you’d have to go in and dig them out. They just wasn’t strong enough to get up and walk with all that water in their wool.”
In those days, ranchers counted on the vet to doctor anything that was sick.
With a consistent dipping program, sheep scab—and sheep dipping—became another of those things that exists only in memories. Frank said in his area of northwestern Nebraska, the sheep are nearly all gone as well, thanks

Today, at age 83, Frank’s practice is mostly preventative–working with producers on vaccination programs—and emergencies like lacerations, something gets in the fence or steps on a nail or hooks a side. “Practice has changed a lot since I started. It has kind of improved, but you’ve got to change with it. You’re going to have emergencies—you can’t eliminate those.”

national program that assists military veterans in launching farming projects now has a program specifically for Montana service members. Armed to Farm provides training, technical assistance, and a network of resources to veterans who are operating or starting sustainable crop and livestock enterprises.
Participants of the first Armed to Farm training in Montana last fall spent half the week learning startup financial planning skills in the classroom, and the other half touring local farms.

The program is overseen by the National Center for Appropriate Technology, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Butte, Mont., with the mission of helping people by championing small-scale, local, and sustainable solutions to reduce poverty, promote healthy communities, and protect natural resources. Tammy Howard is an NCAT program specialist who oversees the Montana Armed to Farm program. She said the national Armed to Farm program has been in existence for more than five years, and was started by an ag specialist with NCAT who was also a veteran and a poultry farmer. “He found a lot of therapy from his farm and wanted to share that with other veterans. He has since left NCAT to farm full time. Last summer NCAT received a $240,000 grant from the USDA to bring the program specifically to Montana. The goal is to develop, over a three-year time period, a program to work with approximately 100 beginning farmers who are military veterans in Montana and the intermountain west. Along with Great Falls Community College, Montana Farmers Union, Alternative Energy Resources Organization, the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition and the Farmers Veteran Coalition, the project offered its first week-long intensive training last August in Great Falls. The week included classroom learning on business planning, financial records and documents, goal setting, marketing channels, and fiscal management, along with daily tours of local sustainable farming enterprises. Speakers included

specialists in market gardening, pasture management and poultry enterprises, and representatives from credit organizations and USDA offices, including the Natural Resources and Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency. “The training is a week-long program where participants spend about half their time in the classroom, and the other half at area farms,” said Howard. “We focus on products that go into a state’s economy, as opposed to commodity exports. We’re not training people to get involved in commodity-based agriculture – there is already a lot of information on that from Extension. Our focus with technical assistance is sustainable agriculture.” NCAT’s definition of sustainable agriculture is farming that meets

environmental, economic and social objectives simultaneously. The training last fall was limited to 30 participants, mainly to ensure quality one-on-one time and attention to individual development. “The participants came from all different types of backgrounds, and several have been farming for a couple of years,” said Howard. “In our application process we try to choose people who are serious about farming – those who have progressed beyond the ‘exploration stage’ – so we can help them develop and build on their enterprise goals.” Most attendees were at the stage of their business where they have land and/or livestock secured. Projects included dairy cattle and goats, certified
vegetable farmers, and cow-calf and pasture-based enterprises. The tours scheduled throughout the week were planned to provide exposure to different enterprises and allow attendees the chance to see an operation at work. Visits included Prairie Heritage Farm – a diversified, small-scale operation, Groundworks Farm, which grows and sells meat and vegetables without synthetic additives, Granger’s Farm, which produces Certified Angus Beef, and Bird Creek Ranch, a working ranch with diversified heritage breed livestock.

“While the work of farming is not necessarily therapeutic in a physical sense, the lifestyle can be in a mental sense.
“A lot of veterans come from rural communities, and Montana is very rural,” she said. “While the work of farming is not necessarily therapeutic in a physical sense, the lifestyle can be in a mental sense. Our number one goal is to have more veterans farming in Montana.”
Howard said of their current group of participants, approximately 50 percent strive to make farming their full-time career. “Some have other jobs, and some are still in active duty and waiting to retire,” she said. Although the program does not provide capital, Howard said their goal is to provide the training and resources so participants can apply and be
approved for financing.
Mystery Harris, originally from Los Angeles, and now residing in Fort Harrison, Mont., has been in the military for 15 years – six years of active duty in the U.S. Army and the rest in Army Reserves. She said she decided to apply and get involved with the Armed to Farm program because she felt they would give her the tools and knowledge to become successful as a beginning farmer. “I really enjoyed the process and information that I learned in the program, and would highly recommend it to other veterans who would like to start farming as well,” she says. It is my goal to start selling my sheep, chickens, eggs, yak, and beef to consumers.” She said the program was a great fit for her as she works to build her enterprise in an industry she enjoys. “I think farming is a good vocation for veterans because it provides stress relief working with animals and growing things. Being in the service has taught me to have patience and to enjoy the little things in life.” For more information on Armed to Farm, NCAT and ATTRA, visit www.ncat.org.

or more than a century the little quiet community of Platte has enhanced southeastern South Dakota. It’s not a place you’d expect to draw a lot of press or create a big stir, yet the volume of business traffic in and out belies that impression. Much of that traffic is related to Meyerink Farm Service, Platte’s personal “build it and they will come” factor. The family-founded/owned business employs around 40 people full-time, and serves agricultural, construction and transportation needs across dozens of states. They offer everything in parts and service, along with new and used equipment sales including land scrapers, truck boxes, mixer wagons, pallet forks, bale spears, buckets, ear corn feeders, feed bunks and free stalls; plus gates, fencing and other livestock related items, bringing a lot of dollars into the local economy. Dave Meyerink and his brother Duane were born in Platte, and have lived there all their lives. They started out farming, with their father Gerard. Natural craftsmen and

innovators, they were soon building gates for the local sale barn, plus repairing whatever area farmers brought to them, all while still farming. The growing volume of work caused them to start a shop in town – at first “Just a 36’ x 36’ building that had some storage behind it,” Dave says. “In 1977 we moved into the second location and went from two employees to about five.” They added on to that location two or three more times, still doing mainly service work and repair, Dave says. Then in the mid ’80s they started fabricating truck bodies, transports, feeder wagons and all sorts of gates. They kept adding equipment, like turning lathes, old flame cutting pattern torches, etc. In the mid ’90s they moved into building bog scrapers and truck boxes. “We always catered mainly to the ag industry, both livestock and farming,” he said. After that they started rebuilding combine concaves and then also started to rebuild the Case IH

mower heads. As volume increased they outgrew that space and in 2003 moved to their current location, where they now have 40 employees. That many employees with enough equipment to build all those products take up a fair amount of country. Dave says their largest shop today is 45,000 square feet under one roof. “There’s 11,000
Make More Money... square feet in another, and another has about 6,000. We continue to add equipment, like an 8’ x 20’ high definition plasma table and a 600-ton, 20-foot press brake for forming metal.”
BUILD A GRAIN BIN!
“We have extensive machine shop fabrication, and 90 percent of what we do is all in-house,” Dave Meyerink says. Their father, Gerard, passed away in 2004, but the company still includes two generations of Meyerinks. “Duane and I co-own the business and each of us has a son in business with us.” Dave says. The sons in the business are Dave’s Jarod, who has three sons of his own; and Duane’s Jaden, still enjoying the single life. Mark Burket of Platte Hospital talks about one of Meyerinks’ more unusual projects. “About eight years ago we were building a new facility and one of our decisions was to build strong enough to accommodate a helipad on the roof. We didn’t include that in the initial plans but as things progressed we

began to look at implementing it. That’s when we discovered there are only two companies in the US who build those things,” he says. “Add to that we are very landlocked here, and the pricing and structure and everything involved to implement it looked impossible – totally beyond our ability to manage,” Mark says. “I talked with Dave Meyerink and he said he thought we could make it work. So we hired a consultant and an engineer, all personally read a lot of F.A.A. manuals, worked with Meyerinks, and the result is just remarkable.” “When we kicked off the building we had one of the hospital choppers fly in and land, and I was able to go up inside with the pilot,” Mark said. “I put the headphones on and he said, ‘Wow, what a great helipad!’ Before he left he told me, ‘You know, this is the nicest helipad we land on, in the entire 5-state area we cover!’ ” The Meyerink clan’s popularity and respect are widespread. Just mention their name on the street in Platte and you’ll hear more good things. Local contractor and businessman Tyler Samuelson says, “They’re a lifeline for us, and we attribute a ton of our business success to

them. I started my business about nine years ago and I was young and didn’t know where to go to get what I needed, and from the very first day they were helping me. In fact they got me my first tele-handler. “We do a lot of wintertime work in our shop, and those guys are always helping us get parts and supplies. If we run into an issue it seems like they drop everything they’re doing just to help us out. They’re seriously one of the best businesses in town for our community. I know a lot of other people here would agree with me that they’re a good reason why we all succeed in this community.” Partner brother Duane Meyerink said, “We’re pretty proud of a lot of things in our community, it’s a viable little town. There’s another manufacturing company up on the other side of town that builds trailers, and we do a lot of work for them as well. And we did a lot of work for a company out of Gillette, Wyoming, when one of their machines broke down. They said we were the closest outfit they could find that does this kind of fabricating.” The entire Meyerink clan loves their community and they’re involved in everything that benefits Platte in
any way – from hospital fund drives to swimming pools to furnishing equipment wherever needed. Dave is currently president of a large water district and past-president of the Hospital Board, and is a retired firefighter. His son Jarod is a firefighter and an EMT, and brother Duane is also an EMT. And the whole clan is involved with Pheasants Forever.
If anything can be done, Meyerinks can do it – and they’ll do it well!”
“We’ve been extremely blessed to be in a community with good employees and good honest people to work for,” Duane says. “We just lost an employee this year that had been with us over 20 years, and some others have been here that long as well. We try and treat our employees like family – we’re a family-owned business and that’s where we feel we can give back a little bit because we’ve been so blessed.” Platte is likewise blessed, in many ways, by being home to Meyerink Farm Service. Beyond their community service and support Duane said, “We bring people in to town, and if they’re waiting for a part or some service or repairs to be finished they’ll go
downtown and maybe eat or shop . . . people who might not be in Platte except for coming to our shop.”
Mark Burket echoed that, saying “They’re a pillar to the community, in an economic sense in the goods and manufacturing they do, plus they drum up business with the people they draw here. More importantly they’re an asset through their solid business expertise, their brilliance, determination and drive; and most of all, their great ‘can-do’ attitude. If anything can be done, Meyerinks can do it – and they’ll do it well!” Tom Varilek is another who’ll tell you about Meyerinks; and he’s known them a long time. “There’s three generations of Varileks and three generations of Meyerinks that have worked together, and we’ve done a lot of work,” Tom says. “Our dads worked together and our generation works together, and now our kids do the same. They’re good friends and great people. My Dad used to say ‘if it can be fixed, Meyerinks can fix it.’ And that’s the truth.”

George Yost is one of the original founders and current owner along with his wife, Karen, and daughters, Kellie Kittelmann and Katie Yost. George grew up on a ranch in Montana, and created his liquid supplement product after working with other supplement companies. His first introduction into what was then a relatively new industry was his employment as

a salesman for Agri-Lines Converter Liquid Feed Co., in Billings, Montana more than forty years ago. “It was my first sales experience and I found I enjoyed selling very much. I also enjoyed working for the owner/ manager Richard Rawlings.” Yost said. Then, Agri-Lines sold their Billings plant. Yost ended up working for a succession of new owners as the business changed hands several times in a short period of time. He took advantage of this time of uncertainty to seriously consider developing his own product, with better job security. So, in 1987, with two other partners, Nutra-Lix, Inc. was born. “That is how Nutra-Lix Liquid Feed Supplement was started. Our goal then—and now – was to enhance the feedstuffs that cattlemen already have on hand and, at the same time, to make sure that vital nutrient requirements were met in that ration,” he says. Yost worked with many different ranchers, nutritionists and scientists to design Nutra-Lix Liquid Feed Supplement. He evaluated cows’ performance and studied ruminant nutrition to gain a better understanding of how their digestive tracts work. At that point there were three Nutra-Lix employees—John Cellan, plant manager; Dave LaFurge, mixing technician; and George Yost, salesman. The goal for Nutra-Lix feed supplement was for the best use of on-ranch feedstuffs combined with the added and required nutrients of an effective supplement. The ultimate goal was to get more cows bred, show better productivity, and produce stronger, healthier calves. Nutra-Lix was successful on all counts. It enables cows to clean up grass that they wouldn’t eat before, and produce healthier calves.

“We’ve been able to winter cattle on just straw and Nutra-Lix liquid supplement rather than on more expensive hay. This has played a big role in cutting winter feed costs,” Yost says. “You can increase the cows’ consumption of poor forage that a cow eats in twenty-four hours with Nutra-Lix, and that added intake will increase her body condition and give her more energy.” The savings in using existing forage with NutraLix can be substantial and helps the rancher add an increased margin to his bottom line. With Nutra-Lix, ranchers save money on two major expenses: feeding and morbidity and medical and veterinarian costs for baby calves.
through local dealerships by dealers that the customers had a relationship with. “Nutra-Lix dealers play a huge role in hand-delivering the product and checking it regularly for proper intake. Most of our dealers also provide a visual check of the cattle as they are delivering the product, and communicate with the rancher for problems they might see. And, having the supplement delivered directly to the pasture saves money on fuel, time and labor. There are so many advantages,” he says.
“In developing this product, I knew that controlling intake and palatability was very important,” says Yost. “With Nutra-Lix, the supplement is available to the cattle 24/7 at a guaranteed consumption rate. Because all of the cattle have the opportunity to visit the trough, there are no ‘boss cows’ that get more than their fair share, and timid cows are able to get the supplement they need.” To make Nutra-Lix feed supplement more economical, Yost believed that it had to be sold

THE FAMILY – Members of the Yost fam-
ily, along with several excellent employees make up the Nutra-Lix staff. “It’s great to have our kids working alongside us every day,” says Yost. Daughters Kellie and Katie are huge assets to Nutra-Lix, Inc. with their computer skills and next generation thinking. Katie enjoys traveling and photography in her spare time, but otherwise keeps busy as CFO of Nutra-Lix. Kellie manages accounts receivables and dealer relationships. Her husband, Kaine is plant manager and their two young boys, George and Augustus make it to work at least once a week. “That also explains what Kellie and her husband do with their ‘free time,’” Yost says.

As their kids were growing up, George and Karen produced team ropings at their own arena every Friday night. Now, their son, Ty and his wife Stacey have taken what was a part-time avocation for George and Karen and made team ropings into a serious and prosperous roping production company, Rancho Rio, headquartered in Wickenburg, Arizona. They promote Nutra-Lix products at their events. The Yost’s eldest daughter, Heather and her husband Larry Baker are dealers for Nutra-Lix in Jordan, Montana. Their feed business, YCross Feeds, sell all types of animal feeds and feed supplements, with Nutra-Lix being a major item for them. They also ranch and run cattle.
“It helps when our dealers have a ranching background because they understand cattle better and can explain to their customers how our supplement works.” Yost says.
When asked by friends when he is going to retire, Yost said, “I tell them that if I were to retire I would probably just sit in a corner and become dusty and then die.”
“We love that our family is all a part of the business. Relationships are huge in managing any business, so being able to work with family members who make the effort to understand each other make working long days and long hours bearable. Our ‘non-relative’ staff and employees have been extremely flexible and supportive of this arrangement and fit right in. We depend upon them for so much.”
Besides the need to stay busy, it’s his love of the ranching industry that keeps him going. “I often end up spending more days in the office than I like so I truly enjoy the opportunity to get out in the country and visit with ranchers. I love working with ranchers because I love what they do and who they are. They love and respect the land, and I am honored to be a small part of it.”
After 30 years running a company, some people would consider retirement not far off. This is not the case for Yost.

or nearly a century, the Sioux Falls Stockyards was a hub of activity for southeastern South Dakota and the surrounding region. Livestock producers would travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to sell their hogs and cattle, eat at the sale barn cafe and visit the local stores with their families.

The Sioux Falls Stockyards For many in the agricultural community, the Stockyards will always hold a special place in their hearts, so when the doors closed in 2009, it quickly became evident that these memories needed to be preserved for future generations. Building a museum to capture the rich history of the Stockyards has been a dream for Jim Woster.
“I grew up on a ranch, and we sold calves at the Sioux Falls Stockyards when I was a kid,” said Woster, who worked at the stockyards and later as a cattle buyer in the stands for 43 years. “With John Morrell close by, there was a processor and a stockyards right in Sioux Falls, and it was really a big economic boost for the Sioux Falls community. Everybody who came

to town bought something; it was a big day for sales for local merchants.” The Stockyards opened in 1917, and at that time, it could accommodate 5,000 hogs and 6,000 head of cattle. The facility had 62 cattle pens, three closed hog sheds and an area for sheep. Over the next 45 years, business grew, and so did the need for expansion. The complex soon covered 49 acres, and at its peak, sold as many as 10,000 animals daily. Livestock Exchange Building, ca. 1940. IMAGE COURTESY CLARE VOLLAN.

“When I graduated from SDSU, I had pretty bad grades and couldn’t find a job,” said Woster. “I managed to get a job at the Stockyards, and I’ll never forget showing up to work at 5 a.m. the day after graduation. I opened up my car door and stepped out, and the smells, the trucks, the cattle bellering, the guys going to work at Morrell — it was all so excited. I never had a Monday because I always really enjoyed going to work. Even after 43 years, I never lost that feeling. You go to any sale barn across the state, and they’ll tell you the same thing. There’s an excitement about being in the marketing business. I was really lucky to work there.” The Stockyards was the largest livestock market in the U.S. in 1976. It earned the number one designation again in 1981, processing more than 2.2 million head of cattle, 1.2 million butcher hogs, 223,000 feeder pigs, and 190,000 sheep that year. In the 1980s, the Stockyards sold animals to nearly 70 packing plants across the United States and Canada.

Stories of the Stockyards have been captured through the Stockyards Ag Experience Plaza and Barn, a regional attraction located at Falls Park in Sioux Falls. Officially opened to the public on March 2, the facility not only focuses on sharing the history and legacy of the Stockyards, but it also features a farm-to-table exhibit that educates visitors about where their food comes from. “We’re located in an 1880s horse barn located in Falls Park; it’s a highly visible location near a tourist destination that attracts one million visitors annually,” said Jennifer Hoesing, Stockyards Ag Experience executive director. “We’ve leased the building from the city of Sioux Falls, and we’ve spent the last year preparing the designs and getting the barn open.” The Stockyards Ag Experience has dedicated 900 sq. feet of the facility to presenting the history of the Stockyards with photographs, artifacts and interactive touch screens that feature oral history interviews and first person accounts of the Stockyards from former buyers, sellers and workers. “Our goal is for ranchers who visit our two exhibits to see their culture and livelihood reflected in a positive way,” said Hoesing. “For our visitors who aren’t familiar with agriculture, our goal is to show them that farmers and ranchers work hard to produce safe, nutritious food, and that it’s grown right here in South Dakota.”

Rawhide Portable Corral In most instances, cattle must be brought to a pen in order to be worked, but with Rawhide Portable Corral, the pen is brought to the cattle. Rawhide Portable Corral system is a set of panels that folds up neatly onto a single trailer with squeeze chute. One person can set up and fold down the panels within 10 minutes, with no lifting required, due to the hydraulic jack. “Owner and inventor, John McDonald, was formerly with Bull Riders Only and hauled a portable arena across the country while also working as a stock contractor with bucking bulls. He came up with the idea for the Rawhide Portable Corral in the mid-nineties because there was no easy way to use a portable system with bucking bulls and he wanted his idea to be able to haul down the road at the speed limit while also doing it with one person. In 2002 he relocated his family from rural North Central Kansas to Abilene, Kansas so that his idea could become reality. He sold his first Rawhide Portable Corral in 2003,” said Cassy Wilson, head of marketing with Rawhide Portable Corral. Rawhide Portable Corrals come in three different sizes with the largest able to accommodate 500 head. Each size of the portable corrals, when folded in, fits through any gates a pickup can, and transports at the same speed on a highway. The wheels hydraulically raise and lower and do not need to be removed when using. “The Rawhide Portable Corral, no matter what the size or the design, will always have the following features: one person can use the system, there will be no lifting of panels, and the system may be unfolded and set up for use in ten minutes or less. Additional features include the electric
over hydraulic jack on every model to go from transport mode down in to corral mode. This feature is why John McDonald created the the Rawhide is the first hydrau- Rawhide Portable Corrals for lic corral on the market – no his own use in the mid-nineother corrals on the market had ties. Something you do not get with standard panels.” The pens are made in their facility in Kansas with care being applied to each weld, plasma cut, and paint job. “Rawhide has been selling corrals for 15 years now. The Processor has been available since 2010, at which time the original Rawhide design was retired, and just last summer the new Original was re-introduced to consumers, a modified original corral with permanent transport wheels,” Wilson said. “Our corrals have been very well received and we have even been called the ‘Cadillac of the portable corrals’. We continue to have a waiting list for our corrals, although now it is the shortest that it will ever be due to our increase in production, because we build every corral to order.”

He came up with the idea, he said, over a lot of sleepless nights. “My dad and I are always pitching tumbleweeds, and last year I said I had had enough and was going to build something,” he said.
Tumbleweed Fence Cleaner You may know the song Tumbling Tumbleweeds by Bob Nolan, in which he is “drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds.” Tumbleweeds are romanticized in the song as lonely and free and the writer is tumbling along.
The fence cleaner is still in prototype phase due to legalities and paperwork, but Jordan Reed, of Hanging H Welding, LLC, is hopeful he can offer his product to public later this year.
the chopper was the hardest to get how I wanted,” Reed said. “Tumbleweeds don’t like to shred easy. All the gears and chains to get speeds right took me a little bit of thinking.”
In these days, tumbleweeds are seen in fences more often than tumbling freely, and Jordan Reed, of Hanging H Welding in Lusk, Wyoming, has created a solution for these captured tumbleweeds, which create a wild-fire risk and pull over fences. His tumbleweed machine is an attachment for tractors that has large roller brushes that pulls tumbleweeds from fences and agitates them into small pieces. “There were definitely some hurdles with the chopping of the tumbleweeds. Getting them off the fence is easy part,
He has used the machine on fencelines on their ranch 45 miles north of Lusk with great success. The machine doesn’t operate in rough terrain, though neither does the tractor it’s attached to. The operator does have the ability to tilt the machine to match fenceline angles for those that are tilting under the weight of wind and tumbleweeds. The machine is still in a prototype phase, however, Reed hopes to finish legalities and necessary paperwork to be able to offer his attachment for sale to the public this summer. Bale Handlers Move over skid steer, there’s a different machine in town. The AutoLoad Bale Handler by Pronovost is a trailer that picks up and transports round or square dry hale or silage bales. It uses a patented loading arm designed to turn the bale and load it.
Once the operator is notified by the full load indicator, the load can be transported to the drop-off area and easily unloaded horizontally in less than two minutes. The sides of the bale handlers close in for easy storage or highway traveling.
spend that money to do an operation that he can do with the equipment he already has. They will end up saving time in the short run, but in long run, it pays for itself,” Bouchard said. “The idea is that it saves time and labor.”
“This is still a niche product. People can do without it; not every farmer or operator is willing to
Pronovost’s bale wagon is the most rugged of similar designs, though it does not stack bales
The bale wagon was first introduced by Pronovost in 1993 as a round bale feeder. They have since expanded to several roundand square-bale options. “With its extra robust chassis and tandem axles, the auto-load bale handler helps reduce manpower, fuel costs, time in the field and minimize soil compaction,” the website states. The three sizes of round bale handlers have capacities of 10 to 23 bales, with the option to purchase a loading arm to stack a layer on top. The two square bale handlers have capacities to load eight to 36 bales. “This is an important option because it increases capacity,” said Dominic Bouchard, with Pronovost, a Canadian company. “Another important option is you can have the choice of adding air flotation tires, especially if you will use it for silage bales. There is also a choice of electric or manual controls.” Bales are scooped and loaded in the same direction as the baler without the need to stop, to create ease of use and quick loading.

“Because of the economies of scale, and due to the volumes of plastic tubs sold, the plastic still costs less than biodegradable tubs, but we’ve marketed it so that it’s at the same price as plastic,” Greenfield said. “We want to respect the fact every ranch has a different set of needs and challenges, and we want to provide what they want not what we want to sell, so we make Envirotubs available at the same price as plastic.” To read more about Envirotubs or to order product, visit Rio Nutrition’s website www.RioNutrition. net.Crystalyx’s BioBarrel with Single-Trip Container (STC) technology features a “proprietary blend of ground cereal straw and wood fiber, coated with a soy flour solution that is pressed and molded. Using heaters with Thermosink is unnecessary. Boehm said he experiences no trouble with freezing in the winter, and he has fresh, cool water in the summer. “You don’t need any power to them. I live up in the cold country and have no problem with them at all,” he said. “I have nine in my yard. The water stays nice and cold so there’s no algae buildup; I’ve always got clean, clear, cold water. The calves bypass the dams and go for the waterer. It makes a big difference when you can add another 20 pounds on calves.”

Rob Boehm, owner of Interstate Waterers in Mandan, North Dakota, has used and sold the product for nearly 15 years. “They work; I use them myself and you can’t destroy them,” Boehm said of Thermosink, which is made of heavy-duty polyethylene. “They’ve got a guarantee on them for life. I have sold semi loads the last 15 years. We have feedlots that have 45 to 50 of them, and when they expand the feed lot, they put in more Thermosinks.”
