nitially when Favourite was launched, many dismissed it as a passing cloud. They could not start thinking how the magazine would brave the stiff competition in the market. I took the doubting Thomas in my stride. There was no turning back. My resolve was steadfast: forward ever, backward never! It didn’t matter that the field was rather crowded by an ally of magazines. What mattered was a belief in myself. With four issues out and never missing a subsequent monthly copy, no one can accuse me of blowing ny own trumpet. I have proved wrong those who never gave Favourite a chance. But here lies the secret of it’s success: you the reader and the advertisers! Your support has been very valuable and without you the magazine would have died a natural death. Every copy you have bought on the streets has been an inspiration to write and produce a better issue. Every comment you’ve made, every criticism whether positive or otherwise has inspired me to scale the radar and improve on grey areas. It’s you, at the end of the day, who has made Favourite come this far. Words are not enough to express my gratitude. Every advert you have given out has ensured the magazine is printed and delivered in time and in good shape. My promise for 2017 is that Favourite will live up to your expectations and improve with every issue. The articles will be of enduring value. It will be difficult for you to stop reading whenever you pick your copy. With your support, we will get to the top and lead the pack. Have an enjoyable St. Valentine’s Day! Suzie Editor in Chief

Real Life

Victory in the Face of

Adversary Reychelle Wambui Muturi is a household name. The beautiful face graces our sitting rooms a lot of times through Inooro TV. Fans love and admire her professionalism and appearance. Yet behind that beautiful serene face lies a strong, determined woman who has braved a lot to get where she is. She shared her inspiring life journey with Suzie.

H

er smile is infectious. Her jovial mood springs from her golden heart. Her beauty makes many other heads turn. With these and many other attributes on one soul, you would expect Reychelle Wambui Muturi literally walks on cloud 9. But far from it, Reychelle is a down-to-earth lady. Her humility is unequalled; she spares an ear to all and sundry. Reychelle’s voice has rent the airwaves for donkey years, first as a radio presenter at Kikuyu vernacular Kameme FM. Her prime shows Canjamuka ( rise and shine), Gitugi Kia Mwihoko (Pillar of faith) and Therera (flowing downstream) mainly for diaspora fans are prime shows that endeared Reychelle to many fans.

Walking us down memory lane, Reychelle recalls spending her early childhood in her rural home in Kangema, Murang’a until she was nine. She moved to Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate with her parents where she grew up. After her forth form at Banana Hills High School in Kiambu , she enrolled at Majenta Training Institute to pursue Mass Communication and Journalism and successfully graduated. With that streak she had achieved her dream of working in the media. “I was lucky to get an internship opportunity at NTV and later KTN for broadcast journalism. Later I was fortunate to be picked for voice over at Capital FM before moving to Kameme and finally Inooro FM.” She explains. She is quick to add that

these were opportunities she never took for granted. She put her all in it and came out shinning. Her road to success and fame was wide open and she walked it majestically. It was while doing voice over at Capital FM that her mentor, the then Kameme FM boss Rose Kimotho identified her rich broadcasting talent. She picked her out to work at Kameme F.M. “I was so determined that when I was enrolled at Kameme Language and Cultural Centre to train writing and speaking in Kikuyu, my mother tongue, I seized the opportunity with gusto,” she recalls. She quickly won the hearts of her listeners with carefully planned and researched entertainment radio programs: Canjamuka, gitugi kia mwihoko, Therera gracing the air for seven uninterrupted years. Whatever goes up comes down… Just when she was at the top of her act, the unexpected happened. It was no longer business as usual. She

encountered what she prefers to call hiccups at work and had to bow out. Nonetheless, Reychelle was determined to take full control of her life. She turned another leaf by venturing into self-employment. She invested her savings in a matatu van. And it wasn’t just sitting by to watch her business grown, Raychelle is action-oriented person; she drove the matatu herself! Forget about the curious eyes of commuters and matatu drivers as well. She was in a job stereotyped for men but she wasn’t cowed and braved the gender discrimination. She adopted the maxim: I am unstoppable and it doesn’t matter what others think.. It’s my life at stake not theirs. This attitude worked in the midst of adversary and with every passing day she …was suppressed by the challenges on the road until she caved in.

into the construction industry, to sell construction materials.” She explains. With tears rolling down her face in reminiscent, Reychelle, mother to 6-year-old Jeremy re-lives, “It was like getting out of the frying pan and into the fire. Lucrative as the business was, many clients were dishonest and reneged on payment for delivered goods. I passed through a lot of challenges and had eventually to close shop.” Faith moves mountains…. All seemed lost for Reychelle, she couldn’t understand the turn of events and looked back at her broadcasting career with nostalgia. She felt life had handed her a bitter lemon from which she was unable to make lemonade. She felt like the “Gods were against her,” as the re-known Nigerian writer Chinua Achembe would have it.

She went job hunting Knocking “I rented out my vehicle as a school uncountable office doors but all van. With bubbling energy I ventured 8 The Favourite

in vain. She faced a lot of rejection and slowly and surely slipped into depression. It became so serious that she kept hopping from one counseling psychologist to another without tangible improvement. With all channels of help seemingly closed, she turned to faith, believing in what she didn’t see. That’s a secret she discovered and has never looked back. Reychelle started relating with God-fearing friends and clinging to faith. With every day that passed she achieved higher levels of faith. Life changed dramatically and she had a breakthrough in September 2015. She got a job as a presenter at Inooro TV, her dream career. Her program Ndagirari (Doctor) has catapulted her to the screen limelight and consequently impacted on many viewers. Her fans love her so much and even though she knows how to ward off unwarranted advances it has not always been possible. For instance, she recalls a time when she was preparing her show when an excited fan unexpectedly hugged her and pecked her on the cheek. Yet in another incident, a fan confessed his love and admiration of Reychelle on air! How embarrassing.! Behind the scene… During her spare time… “I love my own company. This helps me to meditate and reflect on my life and my walk with God.” Who is her Celebrity Crush… “Waooh! President Uhuru Kenyatta because of his class, humility, a kind heart and of course he is very handsome.” How to get her attention “By doing something extraordinary for God’s ministry and if you’re someone who can sacrifice for a needy person.”

Her best and worst date

Her favourite holiday?

Best date: “when I was in high school we visited Kenyatta University under the auspices of our journalism club. A KU student had a crush on me. We slipped to the swimming pool area and since I was still very green about love, all I did was brush. He was pissed off and left after we fixed another date only to find him with another girl on the appointed date!”

“A place like Dubai or a holy visit to Israel.”

Can she date a fun?

Who inspires her? “Bishop Harrison Ng’ang’a , Rev. Teresiah Wairimu , Pastor Ruth Wamuyu , Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed and my grandmother.” Her favourite sport… “Swimming and skipping rope.”

“No because there is no love lost, he would only be loving me because he has seen me on T.V.” The Favourite

He approached his friends and potential friends within his network of investors and floated the idea. Within a short time he had 20 interested members and went ahead to registered e farm cooperative. He became the founder and chairman of e.farm. This is a real estate firm that provides affordable housing and investment options by buying plots in various parts of the county. From that humble beginning, e farm has expanded to serve many customers who would otherwise have not been able to invest or buy a piece of plot. Wallace reckons in the next ten years e farm will be able to offer banking services in addition. Apart from managing e fam, Wallace is a formidable farmer currently rearing 2000 pigs and 2000 chicken. It often takes a bold step to move a mountain in our lives. Unfortunately majority dither and postpone this bold step. Some fail before even starting for lack of selfconfidence. They don’t believe in themselves and their abilities. Consequently, they sit on a golden idea living their lives on a jig saw. They sleep on the hen that lays the golden eggs and finally living a miserable life.

He is married and they have two children.

Not so for Wallace Mwaura who learnt the secret of success after several life’s lessons. Wallace was just like many other people grappling with the vagaries of life and wondering how to think out of the box. Wallace would watch helplessly as different entrepreneurs had a field day acquiring whatever they dreamt of. What was the secret? He kept asking himself in those silent moments he chose to enjoy his own company. Then it hit him, he was the best doctor to treat himself as he knew where the shoe pinched. He longed to buy a plot and develop it. Wallace resolved not to let anything get into his way in achieving this dream. He learnt the loops on how to acquire finances, about housing and other investments. As the Chinese proverb rightly says, a long journey starts with the first step. He appreciated that majority of people wanted to acquire plots and put up their homes or invest in rental housing to earn income. The challenge was raising the required capital. So Wallace came up with a solution: if he brought together The Favourite

VALENTINES

1: Get out of your comfort zone In order to avoid repeating the same meet-date-delete relationship pattern, you’re going to need to shake up your dating formula, sign up for some activities, or take up a team sport. If you change up your environment, you’re bound to cross paths with some new faces.

2: Free up your schedule Think about it: between overtime hours at the office and Pilates classes, does your schedule even allow for you to meet and spend time getting to know someone? Keeping a varied and jam-packed calendar can be exciting, but doesn’t bode well for accepting last-minute date invites. Maybe you’ll meet your significant other at a theology class, the gym or market place. But if you’re consistently struggling to pencil in one-on-one time, perhaps it’s time to economise your schedule—like shopping for a perfect sweater instead of trying to knit one yourself.

Unfortunately Mr. Right is not a series of attributes that can be quantified and crossed off like a must-have checklist. From your Prince Charming lookbook, select three non-negotiables, and then let time and their individual personality guide your perception of him. Maybe he prefers cats to dogs, but cooks up a mean veggie chili.

HEALTH & NUTRITION

6 Health Benefits of Milk M ilk is an important part of our diet. We begin drinking it when we are young, but our intake decreases as we get older. Some people shy away from it because they fear that it will add too much fat to their diet. Others leave it out because they believe that they no longer need it. You are never too old to reap the rewards of drinking milk. It is a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and it has several health benefits, such as:

1. Glowing Skin You can drink a few glasses of whole milk each day to get its benefits. Milk has several nutrients which help skin look its best. It has lactic acid which can act as an exfoliant and enzymes to help smooth skin. It also has amino acids that help keep skin moisturized. Milk can help prevent damage from environmental toxins because it has antioxidants. However, if you have a sensitivity to milk or dairy products, milk can actually aggravate your skin.

2. Healthy Bones and Teeth Milk is a great source of calcium, which is essential for healthy bones. Not only do young children need it while their bones are growing, but adults need it to keep their bones strong and to prevent osteoporosis. Milk is also great for strong teeth, and it helps prevent tooth decay and cavities. In order for the calcium to be absorbed by the body, vitamin D must be present. If you have a vitamin D deficiency, buy milk that is fortified with extra vitamin D to ensure that your body absorbs the calcium.

3. Muscles Milk contains protein, which helps to rebuild muscles. Drink a glass of milk

after you exercise to give your body what it needs to recover. It will help to keep soreness at bay while replenishing fluids that you lost during your workout.

4. Weight Loss Studies show that women who drink low-fat or skim milk lose more weight than those who exclude milk from their diet. It is a great appetizer and it makes a healthy snack. Add a glass to your dinner, or drink a glass while eating a piece of fruit.

5. Less Stress Milk is a great way to de-stress at the end of the day. A glass of warm milk will help to relax tense muscles and soothe frayed nerves. Milk has also been proven to reduce symptoms of

PMS and boost energy. The next time you are feeling frazzled, try drinking a glass of milk while you soak in a bubble bath.

6. Healthy Body Milk has properties that lower high blood pressure and risk of strokes. It reduces the liver’s production of cholesterol, and it can act as an antacid. Vitamins A and B in milk can help build good eyesight. Milk has also been show to help lower risk of certain cancers. There are several varieties of milk on the market, such as whole, 2%, low-fat and fat free. If you are concerned about the growth hormones used in milk, choose to go the organic route. With all of the types of milk available, you should be able to find something that fits your diet and nutritional needs.

Make it Happen fear in the eyes of a mwanachi at the sight of a policeman. While he advocates for adherence to the law, he emphasizes good relationship between an officer and mwananchi. This is a mission he carries in his daily routine. Being a County Commander is no mean task nor has it come in a silver platter for Njue. He started off from the scratch when he joined the police training college Kiganjo, Nyeri in 1984 after his A levels. The training was nothing like a walk in the park but looking back Njue appreciates the versatile training that positively changed his attitude to life. After the six-month training he joined the force as an Administration Police Officer-AP. Little did he know that many years of hard work, devotion, firm and fair treatment of wananchi would eventually catapult him to the high office of County Commander in the district where he trained! Njue, now a husband and father of five children, worked hard from the word go. His devotion did not go un-noticed, he was recognized, given awards and promotions. At one time he was offered an opportunity to train and advance his skills in Botswana. The Botswana experience was a big professional boost, widening his scope and capability. He couldn’t wait to return to Kenya to put into practice what he had learnt. The officer was so efficient in his work that he was promoted to be a trainer of all levels of recruits in the force for six years. Many officers today salute Njue for imparting in them good skills that has seen them shine in the force. Njue boasts of an untainted career in the force.

However, his has not been without challenges. At least no one can expect smooth sailing in the police force all the time. The County Commander recalls the era of the Somali shifta bandits in North Eastern Kenya in the 1980s. The bandits had vowed not to give Kenya a chance and had ambitions to hive out part of Kenya. Your Diary

Avoiding Work Place Drama: 10 Things You Should Never Do By Susan Gitonga Sungit Diaries

F

or peaceful co-existence with your co-workers, there are some major lines you must not cross in order to keep your job and also enjoy a good working environment. Here are 10 key things you should never do at work:

1. Take angry, dramatic, personal calls

Regardless of who has upset you, personal issues should not be brought to work. Hence, when you receive a personal call that is not so pleasant, make sure you quickly retreat to a private place and handle the issue there. Otherwise, handling irritating phone calls in the presence of your colleagues makes you appear very cold and dramatic. Moreover, that negative energy overflows to your co-workers. By any chance this is not a good way of starting the day.

2. Spend hours on social media

It’s unfortunate that many people the world over have at one time of other lost their jobs because of indulgence in social media. In deed scrolling

through Face book to catch up with people’s lives is a tempting pastime. However, done at the expense of working hours is very unfair to your employer. Social media indulgence works better during lunch breaks and at the comfort of your home.

3. Come to work very sick It’s only Jesus who loved us so much that He died for us. Not so when it comes to your job, it’s not worth dying for. When you’re sick or recuperating give your body that deserving rest. Don’t strive to please everyone including your employer by

18

Your Diary

straining your body at the expense of your personal health. Taking care of yourself is as important as working hard at work and producing great results. Your health is as important as your job.

4. Come to work high or drunk I remember my high school days, we had teachers who’d walk into class soaked in alcohol. The class would be a disaster; the teacher stammering to complete a sentence and us laughing our heads off all through. The class would end unnoticed with nothing to show for it. If you must sip something, wait till evening and be professional and sober at work.

5. Disrupt people from their work You could be naturally chatty and finds it difficult drawing the line between time for seriousness and fun. But remember as the name suggests, the main business at workplace is work and bickering is a NO! No! Therefore, interrupting your colleagues from their busy flow of thought and work is harmful to the productivity of the whole organization. So reserve that succulent story for tea or lunch break.

6. Have your phone on anything other than silent There’s nothing more annoying than a phone that keeps ringing on the loudest tone available. It disrupts the

whole office. Keeping your phone on silent is a sign of respect for your colleagues and your work.

7. Wear too much perfume It’s every person’s goal to smell great all the time and to kill any bad body odour that could come inherently from natural causes. Wearing too much perfume, that is very sharp and stingy to the nose is outright over-bearing and uncomfortable. Everyone dreams of inhaling the best of fresh air and considering the limited space you and your colleagues share, fresh air is limited. That said, put on very minimal perfume that is gentle, that only you can smell. Perfume is meant for you, not for everyone.

8. Whine or yell at your colleagues It’s vital to nurture a very professional relationship with your colleagues. So avoid yelling or responding to your colleagues in angry tones. When you can’t agree about something, maintain a calm attitude and respond well, however angry you might be. You would rather talk a few minutes to cool off than have a war of words with your colleagues.

colleagues at work breeds a very uncomfortable environment that makes the other person lose focus, become anxious and unproductive. If you have to throw a pick up line, do it after work on your way home, not at the office.

10. Make your personal life the focus Much as you’re human with feelings and emotions, when it comes to workplace, keep all your personal issues at home. No matter what is weighing you down, be strong and focused enough to deliver effectively at work. You might actually find the peace and calm you are looking for when you channel your energy to your work rather than worrying about your personal life issues. Have an on and off button where, when you’re at work you are focused on work and when you go home, you can focus on all the stuff that isn’t right in your life.

HEALTHY LIVING

Benefits of Drinking enough

Water

W

ater is the main component of the human body. In fact, the body is composed of between 55 and 78 percent water, depending on body size. Adequate and regular water consumption has numerous health benefits. As an added plus, it has no calories, fat, carbohydrates or sugar. The amount of water you consume everyday plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body. Experts recommend drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day to maintain good health. Furthermore, the Institute of Medicine has determined the adequate intake of total beverage per day (AI) to be about three liters or 13 cups for men and 2.2 liters or nine cups for women. Water helps keep the body well hydrated, which is essential because almost every cell in the body needs water to function properly.

Here are the top 10 health benefits of drinking water 1. Relieves Fatigue If you often feel tired, there is a high chance that it could be due to inadequate consumption of water which makes the body function less efficiently. In fact, fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration.

When there is less water in the body, there is a drop of blood volume which causes the heart to work harder to pump oxygenated blood out in the bloodstream, and other major organs also work less efficiently.

Thus, drinking adequate water can help your body function better and reduce fatigue.

2. Improves Mood Research indicates that mild dehydration (even one or two percent lower hydration level of

20

The Favourite

HEALTHY LIVING

hydration than optimal) can negatively affect your mood and ability to think. A small study conducted on 25 women and published in the Journal of Nutrition found that being dehydrated can take a toll on your mood and cognitiive function. The color of your urine is a good indicator of your level of hydration. The lighter the color the better the level of hydration and vice versa.

3. Treats Headaches and Migraines If you have a headache or migraine, the first thing that you can do to get some relief is drink plenty of water. Headaches and migraines are often caused by dehydration. In a study published in the European Journal of Neurology, researchers found that increasing water intake helped reduce the total number of hours and intensity of headaches in the study participants.

4. Helps in Digestion and Constipation Water also improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. This helps in digestion and prevents constipation. Inadequate water in the body often results in constipation as the colon pulls water from the stools to maintain hydration, thereby making them harder and difficult to pass. Drinking sufficient water boosts your metabolism and helps the body properly break down food.

This helps your digestive system work well and promotes regular bowel movements. Warm water, in particular, is good for digestive health.

5. Aids Weight Loss In a clinical trial, scientists found that drinking two eight-ounce glasses of water prior to meals can help suppress appetite and hence support your weight loss efforts. When you drink water, it fills your stomach and reduces the tendency to eat more. Plus, it helps increase the rate at which the body burns fat, and promotes the breakdown and elimination of fat cells. Calorie-free water is also a great replacement for high-calorie drinks like alcohol, sugary fizzy drinks and sodas that often contribute to weight gain.

6. Flushes out Toxins Water is an excellent detoxifier as it helps flush out toxins from your body and get rid of waste primarily through sweat and urine. It also promotes kidney function and reduces kidney stones by diluting the salts and minerals in urine that cause kidney stones. Though you need to drink adequate amount of water throughout the day, experts warn against drinking too much water (although uncommon still, it is possible) as it may reduce your kidneys’ ability to filter out waste. Thus, it is recommended to drink the amount of water your body requires. As the amount of water required by the body tends to differ from one person to another, it is usually suggested to drink to your thirst, and also include other fluids and foods with high water content in your diet.

CECILIA WANJIRU MUCHIRI Academic and catwalk giant

S

ome consider modeling as a career for the faint-hearted and others with a questionable moral character. However, Cecilia Wanjiru Muchiri has proved them wrong. Cecilia is not only morally upright but also a university graduate and currently pursuing a second degree alongside her modeling career. Cecilia is a living inspiration to many. 26-year-old Cecilia Wanjiru Muchiri literally walks tall. Her head held high. One look at her and the image of a peacock flashes in your mind. To add to her CV, Cecilia is beautiful, jovial, intelligent and hardworking. You don’t have to stretch your imagination to know what she does with her life- the gait and calculated move on her swift feet tells it all: Cecilia has graced the catwalk uncountable times walking away with awards to prove she leads while others follow. She is a model in a class of her own. Flashing an irresistible smile, Cecilia confesses that being a model is no accident; right from an early age and specifically in high school, colleagues nicknamed her Wanjiru the model. She did not only hold her own like a model but was also always smartly dressed.

However, penetrating the modeling world wasn’t like a walk in the park for her: initially around 2013, she had a problem of falling on heels while practicing in and outside her house. Born and raised in Kirinyaga County, the procurement graduate from Chuka Univeristy in Meru first attended an event at Sea-Guall Garden along Thika Superhighway and ended up at the tail-end as the last runners-up. However, with determination and will-power, she didn’t give up and soldiered on.

Taking up the cue, she proceeded to win the 2014 -2015 Miss Academic Kenya and later Miss ghetto Kirinyaga County. Cecilia who alongside modeling is pursuing a second degree in business management at Egerton University says anyone aspiring to be a model must be equipped with a wardrobe with the necessary tools of trade such as make-ups, shoes, dresses and hairstyles to mention but a few. This, she says, is not cheap by any standards. Another drawback, according to Cecilia, is that some people wrongly assume that models are prostitutes. To add salt to injury, some sponsors fail to pay models after an event. Cecilia feels at the end of the day modeling talent is not highly appreciated. More about Cecilia: * A career woman in a managerial position * Former marketing manager for Urithi Premium Sacco. * Enjoys travelling watching movies and swimming.

Natural Ways To Make Your Hair Soft

D

ry, frizzy hair can be one of your worst nightmares. We know how hard it can be to battle brittle hair or even think about stepping out on a bad hair day but not anymore. Regular hair-drying, pollution or over exposure to the sun are just some of the reasons that can make your hair dry. Besides this, some people may have naturally dry hair. The first step to bring back your hair’s shine and moisture is to identify the cause and then work to repair the damage. The hair gets moisture from the roots. Therefore, avoid doing anything that makes your scalp dry especially during cold weather. The good thing is that you don’t always have to depend on expensive salon treatments. Fortunately, there are few natural ways to bring your locks back to life. Here are some great ingredients you will find right in your kitchen and how to use them. 1. Egg and Yoghurt Mask If you have dull and lifeless hair in cold weather then yoghurt and egg white is the perfect solution for you. Eggs can be a great source of protein

for your hair while soothing yoghurt can help reverse hair damage caused by product build up and air pollution.

2. Coconut Milk, Avocado and Jojoba Oil Hair Mask Coconut milk is rich in protein, very high in fats, making it great for moisturising and strengthening. Avocado is rich in fatty acids making it very moisturising for your hair. Jojoba oil promotes hair growth. Mix the three for shiny tresses.

3. Milk and Honey Use a half to a full cup of milk (at room temperature) and add either one or 2 big tablespoons of honey. Allow it about an hour to work and then rinse it off using regular shampoo. This wonderful pack won’t weigh your hair down or make it greasy but give it wonderful shine and softness instead.

4. Papaya Mask Dandruff is a common problem in cold weather because of a dry scalp. Papaya prevents balding as it helps

boost hair growth by strengthening the roots as well as controlling dandruff. Mix together 1 skinned papaya with 1/2 cup of plain yoghurt. Let it sit for 45 minutes before you rinse it out.

5. Apple cider Vinegar, Honey and Almond Oil: Apple cider vinegar acts as a great conditioner. Mix two tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of almond oil and one tablespoon apple cider vinegar. Rub this mix all over your tresses gently focusing on the dry, damaged bit and ends. Leave it on for at least half an hour and then rinse it off. All girls with great hair know the secret of oiling their hair regularly. Massage oil into your hair, section by section starting from the scalp to the ends and then pack in a warm towel for 15-20 minutes. Oil locks in extra moisturiser, hydrates hair in the cold weather and gives you soft and shiny locks. Natural oils are such as coconut, olive, castor and almond oil are great for restoring shine and moisture to the hair.
