Dear Readers, I’m here again with a hearty hello to you my esteemed readers. 2021 is progressing well despite the uncertainties of this COVID-19. But 2020 taught us well. That we should be thankful for every breath we take, should never ever be taken for granted. As you read this, you have been added another precious day so count your blessings one by one and you’ll see what God has done for all of us. I therefore welcome you to read the second issue of The Favourite Magazine for the year 2021. We embrace the second quarter of this year with hope and thankfulness to God even as we continue to take all the precautions as advised by the health experts. As I reflect on this edition, what comes to mind are two key words: resilience and restoration . Most of us have lost so much that we have lost count and have been left numb. Opportunities, dreams, hopes, plans, time, jobs, resources, health and loved ones have been lost. But in everything, however painful, there is a lesson. In every lesson there is wisdom gained. Thus every loss has a gain in re-wiring our expectations, attitudes, strategies, priorities and understanding of life. This builds our resilience. It makes us stronger. It makes us better people. No matter what happens in this life, we cannot afford to give up. We have to look up at that star above from our bottomless pits of despair. We must rise and start moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel. We must pick the broken pieces and put them together and carry on. This is restoration. Both resilience and restoration require patience and willpower. But being strong, we must; moving on, we must. My Prayer once again for you and me dear reader, is that we shall weather this storm and come out better and stronger. So enjoy all the articles we have put together for you as we continue to appreciate your loyal readership. By Suzie The English people have a simile“… to be industrious as a beaver.” This is what came to mind as I got a chance to interview Pastor Paul Kuria of Joy Centre Blue Springs on Thika road. You see, a beaver can thrive both on land and in water and is known to build dams by putting pieces of wood and mud across rivers. This is the man whose story I was keenly listening to. He has been in the land of deprivation but can now say he is blessed in a land of plenty. Yet, he has not stopped being industrious. I could sense he is practical as he uses what resources are around him and in him to make life a better experience. Man Kush as he is famously known was born at Gathiga, Kikuyu Subcounty just next to Westlands. He attended Mahia-ini Primary School in the vicinity from 1970 to 1974. Unfortunately, life was in turmoil at the home front and due to the domestic instability the mother and children had to leave for the maternal home in Gakoe, Gatundu. He joined standard 4 and went upto standard 6. The father came to reclaim his band. Back at Gathiga, he had to rejoin his former school in standard 5. Eventually, he sat his CPE in 1978 and the tribulations of his growing up resulted in a dismal performance of 19 points out of 36 points. He seemed to have reached a dead end as the father was not ready to take him to secondary school. The family shifted from Gathiga to Magumu, Kinangop in Nyandarua County. In 1980, he went to Magumu Secondary and he was given admission forms to fill. That evening, the father came home drunk and declared that he had to cater for his own life as he was the son of a woman. That remark closed the school doors for young Kuria. He gathered his broken pieces and headed to OLoitokitok in Kajiado South Constituency close to the Tanzania and Kenya border. He took up odd jobs like being a shamba boy and eventually started selling kerosene at Ilasit market. He would source it from Tanzania. In 1982 after the coup he relocated to Nakuru, Bahati area, Makongo. He joined an uncle in the construction industry

and he would pay him fifteen shillings per day as his assistant. He did this until 1983 when another uncle in Nakuru Town came for him and left him in charge of his home and children since he was going to the UK. While there, he took up boxing at the Amateur Boxing Club. He also sought ways of earning and was employed by different companies as a casual including Elianto, Everyday, Unga and finally KCC. Life was a continuous struggle but he had hope that tomorrow would be better. Meanwhile, he had met and married the love of his life Esther Wairimu Kuria in 1984. In 1987, the wife wanted to be out of Nakuru and so they relocated to Magumu where they were housed by the mother
in a shack which was serving as an outdoor kitchen. His loving family kept him going as his first born had been born in 1985. The other thing that fired him was his Christian faith. He was a member of the Anglican Church and a choir member under the able choirmaster Mr. Gitata and assistant Jacob. He had committed his life to Christ (gotten saved) in Nakuru in 1986. So on relocation, he produced the Gikuyu gospel song “Rurimi” and it did well in the market. As a man of the home, he had to up his game but chances in Magumu were limited. He did whatever was available and honourable and gave it his best. He dug pit latrines, dug people’s shambas, moulded bricks and built structures for people. He set his sights high and was
determined not to wallow in poverty and self-pity. So in 1988, he shifted to Nairobi in their former village. Since they had nothing there anymore, he rented a place and started looking for ways to get finances. By 1990, he had saved, bought land and built a home for his family who had now joined him. This is his family home upto date. The stars were now brighter and in 1990, he went back to school and did his secondary education informally through correspondence. He is happy he made this decision for it opened more chances and widened his knowledge base. Thus today, he is a PHD holder in counselling. He rose to this level gradually by starting with a Diploma in Psychology and

Inspiring lives Higher Diploma in Counselling and pastoral care. As for church matters, he joined Chrisco Church on his relocation to Nairobi and in 2000, he sought the blessings of his pastor Gitauwa as he ventured into his own ministry, Home Grown Joy Ministries. He opened a church in Githurai now known as Joy Centre. Thus he became Pastor Kuria. Man Kush has another artistic side. He had joined the famous Vitimbi group first by writing scripts and later acting. When Ojwang died, he was the presiding pastor, and Churchill headhunted him and without any auditions, he joined the Churchill show and his fame was spreading. Meanwhile, he had joined the mainstream media as a talk-show co-host. He had met Sabina Chege, then working as a journalist, in his church. They did a show together at Kameme for five years talking on marriage issues. He worked with Gathoni wa Muchomba and PM. Later, he joined Inooro Radio in a program called “Hutia Mundu” still on marriage issues and this has run for 9 years. At the moment, he is done with formal employment and is now diverging into freelance engagements like giving seminars and MC gigs. He is based at Blue Springs Hotel on Thika Road and can be reached at 0723 905 852. He is now in a place where he can look back the difficult road he has travelled and fully glorify God for the blessings he now enjoys.

What breaks your heart? Seeing someone in need yet I cannot help. .Achievements A family that is doing well and is stable. I thank God for breaking the chain of domestic violence I saw in my father. I am a father of 3, a grandfather of 5 and all my children are married. My loving wife who married me when I had nothing to my name is still with me. Living a positive life. .Greatest challenge Being in the public light and the public has their own opinions and expectations. Many believe I am super rich but this is far from the reality. .Something not known to the public Kuria is a shy fellow, not talkative but to make it in life, there is a public face. I’m not extravagant but I enjoy life. I love treating myself and my family well. I only stay in places where I’m celebrated. .Parting shot As an individual, set your own standards rather than competing and copying others. Always work hard to get what you need. Be humble. The time for the interview was over. Time had flown as I talked with this amazing man. I thought of the many people who have given up in life due to the challenges facing them. I wish to encourage them that every journey begins with one step. We should all keep on moving and trying. Tomorrow will be better than today.

DAMARIS NJERI IAN RUNNING THE BUSINESS RACE By Suzie It is said that Nairobi is always thriving and the inhabitants know the truth of the English saying, “The early bird catches the worm.” So here I was, like other city dwellers, rising early for work. I settled in an office for an interview with an entrepreneur willing to put in long hours and make it despite the covid cloud. This was a lady full of life, well informed, beautiful, jovial, welcoming and with a great interest in motivating fellow women. Meet Damaris Njeri Kamau, married to a loving supportive husband Ian Mbui Macua, whom she acknowledges to be a strong pillar in her life, family and business. They are blessed with three children. Damaris was born to parents who were teachers in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, as the second born. She has an elder brother and a younger sister. Her parents, now late, who were teachers, took her to school early and she was up to the task. She joined class one at Thogoto Model school when she was 4 ½ years. At 7 years, the family relocated to Thika where she grew up and calls home. She did her class 4 to 8 and proceeded to secondary school which she completed rather young at 16 ½ years before joining college. The world of work welcomed her with its uncertainties but she was out for a good start in the Tours and Travels industry where she worked with a tour related company for 11 years. She gained good experience and the insight led her to registering 16 | The Favourite
Entrepreneurship her own business related to the tour industry in 2007. Her company is known as Africa Best Shuttles and Safaris and has an extension, Kenya Bus Hire. All went well and brought the bread and butter home. As a business woman looking for opportunities, another business idea came her way in July 2019. A friend of hers introduced her to an International Nutritions company from Malaysia known as AG Nutritions. In fact the friend proposed her to be the Country Agency and when she was approached, she looked at what was on offer and liked it. She took the risk and went on board and in August 2019, She was right in the middle of Multi-Level Marketing of supplements and products that would better peoples' lifestyles and health. She now truly believes that everything happens with a reason. In February 2020, she went to Malaysia and had a grand tour of the company’s operations and a view of how the products were made. On her return, she was rearing to go. Then the Covid pandemic became a reality and with the scare and shut downs, her main business venture in tours went down. It was not really doing that well and she still soldiered on even to the present moment. What made her day productive then and now, was her new venture. The products were selling well. These being natural products, people were asking for them. The proper authorization to sell them had been sought from relevant government agencies. They are now selling different products. At the beginning in 2019, they just had one product, a supplement made from fruits and plants. In 2020, they added another product, coffee with additional ingredients. In 2021, they have added three products, one an immune booster, second a colon cleanser and thirdly a Beauty serum and face mist. These diversifications and the demand for their products is a testament that they are good products which can be safely used with positive results. They include AGCERA, AG BROC, AG DrinkButterscotch, AG Fiberee and others. I listened and watched Damaris take me through the details of the various products and could see she was happy with what she was doing. With that passion, she can attend to you and explain all the finer details as she also inspires you in making it in the business world. I admired her business sense and The Favourite | 17

As I left after my interview, I realised that each one of us in the world today must put on a brave face and work even harder amidst the prevailing circumstances brought on by the pandemic. As Mbugua Mumbi says in his book, Excuse Me! Your Dream is Calling You, “Success is about picking bits and pieces to make the whole. It will demand patience, perseverance, resilience, persistence, unwavering faith and a stone solid resolve.”

ACCOMPLISHING BUSINESS GOALS By Suzie It is Napoleon Hill who stated: “Wherever you find a prosperous business, you will come upon some individual who has creative vision.” I was in Westlands for an interview with a Kenyan enterpreneur when these words proved true. The Managing Director of Certified Homes Limited welcomed me warmly in his well arranged office and he had positive things to share. Peter Nyaga was born and grew up in Chuka, Rubate area. Unfortunately, he lost his mom when in Mambi primary class 2 and life changed drastically for him. He was immediately taken to Kira Academy Boarding School but life was hard. More often than not, he would be sent away due to school fees arreas. These challenges inspired him to work hard in school and at standard 8, his KCPE results were good. This earned him a place in a national secondary school but there was a problem. The school fees could not be raised and therefore he stayed home for three months. That meant a lost chance. Somehow after these three months, his siblings came together and raised the amount. They sought the intervention of the District Education Office and Nyaga joined his peers one term later. He thankfully completed school. Life after school was another test. Instead of idling in the village, he joined his brother in Nairobi. This brother was in Real Estate and he became his volunteer cleaner and messenger for three years. He worked very hard. His brother paid for his driving course. Meanwhile, he learnt the ropes of the industry and started being assigned other jobs. It is in this pursuit that they sold a parcel of land at 3 million shillings and his brother gave him his commission of 1 million. He was 21 years old. From this money, he paid for his University education in Procurement and then started his own real estate company. It deals with developments where they build houses and sell land. 22 | The Favourite

NANCY BLESSINGS NGARUIYA:
YOUNG AND SEEKING THE BEST By Suzie The world has been talking of Generation Z who are known as digital natives and ambitious. As Oprah Winfrey has stated, you become what you believe. I knew I had met one of these multitaskers when I sat to interview Nancy Blessings Ngaruiya at Sunside Guest House in Ruai. She came across as jovial and determined to go for what she believed in. She is also beautiful. Nancy Blessings was born to Mr. Ngaruiya and Mrs Wangari Ngaruiya as the 3rd born in a family of five. She attended Karoba Junior Academy for her primary course before proceeding to Gachoire Girls. Currently, she is at KCA University undertaking Accounts and is at level 4 now. This has ignited her passion in business and so trains people in forex stock exchange. She coaches young people and also does modelling. This latter interest came through the coaxing of friends who kept telling her she looked like a model. Eventually she went for auditions and has now taken it up. She loves fashion and keeps up with the trending styles. With all these things being part of her schedule, I could tell she is utilizing her youthful vigour and gearing towards worthy causes. SHINING IN THE DARKNESS BY Menta T
Towns are interesting places at night. For one, neon-lights pop up and create a mystical allure of a thriving place despite the uncertainties of a dark night. And out in the rural settings, a small insect known as the glow-worm, creates its own mystical lighting. The female has no wings and produces a green light at the end of its tail. Such worms create such a fantastic spectacle in the darkest of nights. And now with technology, we have floodlights even in Mashinani that you light your way over areas that would have been afraid to venture for security reasons. In the Holy Bible, Jesus in John 8:12, told the Jews and now us, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light to life.” So dear youth, how is your life progressing? When your life hits dark patches and you need to move without stumbling, what source of light do you use? And most importantly, when people look at you for some positivity, Can you produce a light that others can see shining when they seek a light in dark times? There is this thought someone once put across, “People are most remembered for two things: the problems they solved and the problems they created.” That then begs the question, what are you as an individual known for, darkness or light? God created each one of us in a unique way. We each have our individuality. We each have that something that shines out, stands out, separates us from the crowd. Times also are different. Different times have their
outstanding features. Whatever challenges present themselves in the times we are living in, we must seek that little glow that makes those times memorable. I don’t know about you, but I do love watching the stars in the quiet of the night. There is something so magical, unique, calming and comforting about those glistening constellations. That light in us is what defines life in us. We must never allow ourselves to move around like ghostly shadows without hope and purpose. As a youth, you are a beautiful star. They are making the wrong choices and leaving shattered bulbs and a blurred future. Many parents are crying out from the darkness, “What did I ever do wrong?’’ For many it is not them but the children they sacrificed for, to take to school, only for them to misuse
that opportunity. Why are youngsters taking drugs yet they know their dangers? Why are teens engaging in sexual escapades yet they have the power to abstain and wait for the right time? Why are young people rebelling and denying God yet it is obvious He is the Supreme Power in our lives? Why are the youth so possessed with instant gratification and so have no patience as they seek materialism by hook or crook? Just make the decision to care for others. Do not push your parents to an early grave by your choices and lifestyles. Simply be responsible. As the year progresses, always remember dear youth, that you are the people the world is looking upon to provide logical and practical solutions to all the problems we are facing. It does not matter that those before you did create a mess. But the saying goes that two wrongs do not make a right. By the third day, I was in a bad shape and in a critical condition that led me to the ICU and I was unaware of all that was happening. On 1st of January, a decision was made to transfer me to Nairobi since things were pretty bad. In the ambulance, my sister and the nurses watched over me and I was on oxygen. On the way I convulsed 7 times but somehow life never ebbed out of me. Nothing was changing for the better or worse. I was just hanging there alive but on the brink of death. At the hospital, a heavy downpour detained the ambulance making it difficult to get me out. After 30 minutes, I was rushed to the ICU . The Indian doctor checked me out but could see that everything was pointing towards an inevitable end and even told the nurses so. But on reaching the door, he heard a voice urging him to get back and try yet again. He reorganized his team. They worked on me for 21 days. This is what he confessed to me when I went for my first clinic. I improved somewhat and was moved to HDU for 2 days then the general ward. By then I could recognise my husband, his friends and my mother but other things were a mystery to me. They gave me my phone and I couldn’t tell what it was. But now, in the month of May, 5 months down the line I’m back at work. What else can I say but sing the praises of God and His power. I wish to conclude that there is a God in heaven.
