Editorial
I’m here again with a hearty hello to you my esteemed readers. 2021 is progressing well despite the uncertainties of this COVID-19. But 2020 taught us well. That we should be thankful for every breath we take, should never ever be taken for granted. As you read this, you have been added another precious day so count your blessings one by one and you’ll see what God has done for all of us. I therefore welcome you to read the second issue of The Favourite Magazine for the year 2021. We embrace the second quarter of this year with hope and thankfulness to God even as we continue to take all the precautions as advised by the health experts. As I reflect on this edition, what comes to mind are two key words: resilience and restoration . Most of us have lost so much that we have lost count and have and have been left numb. Opportunities, dreams, hopes, plans, time, jobs, resources, health and loved ones have been lost. But in everything, however painful, there is a lesson. In every lesson there is wisdom gained. Thus every loss has a gain in re-wiring our expectations, attitudes, strategies, priorities and understanding of life. This builds our resilience. It makes us stronger. It makes us better people. No matter what happens in this life, we cannot afford to give up. We have to look up at that star above from our bottomless pits of despair. We must rise and start moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel. We must pick the broken pieces and put them together and carry on. This is restoration. Both resilience and restoration require patience and will-power. But being strong, we must; moving on, we must. My Prayer once again for you and me dear reader, is that we shall weather this storm and come out better and stronger. So enjoy all the articles we have put together for you as we continue to appreciate your loyal readership. Don’t fall for the veneer of false images posted on social media. Don’t fall for the flashy lifestyles all around you that puts materialism and public recognition before what is real and humane. Whenever you pose before the mirror of your soul and ask “Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is fairest of all?’’ The true reflection and true answer will be staring at you every second of your life. PENINAH MUTHONI SPRUCING UP THE FARMING WONDER By Suzie I was a local tourist as I travelled to Abardare Gardens Resort in Karatina, Nyeri County. There I met my host and shared wonderful moments with the gorgeous humble and friendly Peninah as we took a sumptuous lunch in this beautiful, quiet and green establishment . As we chatted, I could tell this was a lady with a passion and purpose in her life. As a business lady, she had focus and experience in agribusiness dealership and I sought to know more about her. She is the fourth born daughter of the late Benson Gatei and Grace Wairimu in a family of nine siblings, 5 boys and 4 girls. Since her parents were in business, she assisted them often and some lessons stuck with her . She was born raised and schooled in Karatina and after her secondary education at Tumutumu Girls, she joined the Coast Institute of Technology for a diploma in Tourism Management. As she pursued her career goals, she fell in love and married the love of her life Robert Gathuru at 21 years, after college. They have three children, two boys and one girl – Roy 23, Ryan 16 and Daisy 10. The children have been a divine gift in their lives and are at different levels of the education ladder.

As such, they work closely with farmers in the region giving them advice; encouraging them on better agro-business approaches ; training them on good agricultural practices and providing them with all the farming requirements they need without compromising quality and good customer relations .
Family life has its responsibilities and thus instead of pursuing tourism management which would involve being away from home often, she and hubby opted for the business line. Her in-laws were already in the Agri-business and her husband was in this business too. So in 2000 they started running an agrovet. It was a small establishment stocking farming requirements like seeds and fertilizers.
Peninah soon realized that farming was a gem and all that was needed was to have a passion for what she was doing. She wore her dustcoat and learnt the intricacies of business and the farming world. Their family agrovet became their centre of focus and now , 21 years later, she can proudly say they are doing well. They are somewhere, helping farmers in the region make their farming a better experience. Today they’re distributors for major Agro firms like
Now at 45 years, she is more knowledgeable in her area of work and she seeks to empower young women to become achievers. In her establishment, Jupiter, she has ten women in her team. She values mentorship of young people for she knows this is a generation with great promise. She also knows the rewarding value of working closely with farmers as she believes in the fact that farming is the backbone of the Kenyan economy. She goes out of her way to attend farmers meetings, expos and even visiting them in their farms. The Favourite | 11
Inspiring lives It is Robert Louis Stevenson who stated, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” And so for Peninah, she continues to provide seeds to her farming fraternity and knowing the farmers will surely get a good deal. Thus she also plants seeds of hope and joy and friendship to those she interacts with knowing it is a labour of love for which she must continuously sow seeds and nurture them for a great harvest day after day. . My late husband. Aspire to carry on to higher heights what we started together years back. . A lady friend, the Late Nancy Wanjiru who I met in early years of business and taught me the ropes.

. Generally anyone who goes out of their way to use their resources to help the poor. . My mother for her strength and business acumen. .The first lady Margaret Kenyatta for her humbleness and dedication in helping fellow women and children.

. Seeing a business grow over the years .Learning the expectations of Agribusiness and their family business being recognized for awards. .2015 - Best Agro-Dealer of the year – Elgon & Ministry of Agriculture. .2018 – Best Agro – Dealer of the year – Sinjenta .2018 – Best growth – Bayer East Africa . Bringing together over 3,000 farmers in June 2019 in Karatina for an expo and training. .Raising a family while attending to business.

. Weather fluctuations which adversely affects farming and thus business . Cut – throat competition from other agro – dealers thus profit margins are challenged.

. Farming is a gem. It is the way to go. Each of us should see beyond the dirt of the soil and exploit the potential of agri-business. Farming is my future and your future. As I wrapped up this interview, I thought of how farming was crucial for every human being's existence and how we often take it for granted. Thus, whether in business like wonderful Peninah, or in the farm tilling and tending the crops and animals, we should all value hard work and do it with passion. I leave you with the wisdom of Theodere Roosevelt: No man needs sympathy that he has to work. Far and away, the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

CREATING BLISS FROM FARMING:
MANDIKIZELLA HAVENS
By Suzie As the annual long rains started and farmers looked at the heavens thankfully, i set out to visit a unique farm on the outskirts of Nairobi. I took the Nairobi-Githunguri road and found myself at Kanyiriri village, Gathaithi, Ikinu , Githunguri subcounty in Kiambu county. This is where the family of Carol Baragu, my jovial welcoming host, has decided to create a haven. They have a typical rural farm operating on mixed farming. However, their venture stands out as a family passion, hobby and project driven by modern agri-business principles. They have thus paired a glorious orchard with beautiful ornamental birds against the background of farm animals (cows, goats and pigs) as well as fish. Carol was born a rural girl in Nyeri and raised in Rumuruti. Her father had a herd of local Zebu cows which she grazed. Meanwhile, she had parents who valued progress so they enrolled her in school together with her sister and brother. She attended primary schools in Nyeri, Rumuruti and Mwatetu before securing a place in Laikipia Girls for Secondary education. Unfortunately boarding life proved a challenge thus a transfer to Gaterwa Secondary Mixed School. She never made the University cutoff points and by then her father had passed on and the burden of raising the family lay on her mother’s shoulders. At this time of transition, her mother felt that she should try the recruitment for prison warder but she really wasn’t for idea. Along the way, she got married young and relocated to Nairobi.

In the big city in the sun, Carol found a job as a cleaner cum messanger at Kasneb offices. She did this job devotedly while still thinking of bigger things. So, she enrolled in college and with time had a diploma, a degree, and a Masters. This educational qualifications opened doors of progress and promotion. Her CEO was a good mentor and when jobs were advertised, she joined the applicants and she landed a marketing job. Her employer deals with exam logistics and now she was no longer the messanger in the bottom ranks but rather bearing the message of the institution’s core values and mission to the outside world. She continued giving her all but in her own words,” As I grew older and was in my 30s, I thought of my retirement. A seminar on the same area was organized at the same time. My focus on life shifted.” She soon stopped taking up extra duties (over-time ) and so weekends would see her at home tending to house chores, her family (hubby and three children) and generally relaxing. Her life in their Nairobi home was fine, but now there was an urge to travel over weekends to their farm in Ikinu. Together with husband, they thought of a side hustle and started rearing chicken. Soon the eggs were more than their family would consume and they would sell to neighbours in Nairobi. With time, new ideas came up. That is how they planted a variety of tress on their farm. Currently they have 65 different types. They added ornamental birds to their chicken brood. Soon they had cows, pigs, and fish on their farm. Their hobby and weekend get-away had turned into a business venture. Every family member was involved in this project. Their teenage children had taken up roles willingly. Whereas the daughters preferred dealing with the cows, their son had a special interest in the bird kingdom. He took care of them with patience and keeness. The mother bought him small incubator where he hatched the birds and was soon an expert. He would bring over his Nairobi 18 | The Favourite
Real Life friends over the holidays and train them. Now a KCSE candidate, he has brought the ornamental birds farming to a new level. Seeing how their farm had transformed, they sat down as a family and brainstormed on a name for their farm. Everyone had ideas that would be inclusive. Eventually, they agreed to honour their eldest daughter .She was Winnie Nelson and the Dad often referred to her as the First lady and during her baptism, She had chosen to be given the name Winnie Mandikizella Nelson.

. Education is very important and farming is noble . You can slay and farm -it is all in the mind.

.Register for PDH studies . Elevate the farming venture
. Getting and maintaining personnel who are loyal,committed to duty unsupervised and well trained .Ornamental birds maybe disease resistant but they require patience tender care and appropriate structures to keep them warm and safe.
10 Current plans?
. Open farm to the public for sight-seeing, business and training especially for school teams
As I wound up my interview with this amazing lady, I felt relaxed in the beautiful serene environment. I wondered why many in the current generation have looked at farming as dirty work and ended up suffering in our heavily polluted cities. My challenge then to Kenyans is that it is high time we fully embraced farming in the modern way where the digital and technological advances are to our advantage. Kenya is so well endowed with natural resources and we should seriously borrow a leaf from Israel. All of us have our little dynamic roles to play for after all: murimi umwe ndaiyuragia ikumbi (Gikuyu) – One tiller does not fill the granary.

Entrepreneurship By Suzie Everyone who has sat in a Geography class has discussed the great challenge of modern living- the rural to urban migration. Everyone has been scrambling for the ever elusive white-collar jobs even as buildings are being built taller and towns are quickly swallowing up good farming land. Yet, the bottom line of a human being is food, and food comes from farming. And so i wondered, on my long road trip to Laikipia , whether anything good can come from a far away rural place. As we chatted with the Favourite photographer, I was happy to tour my country Kenya and enjoy breath taking sceneries along the way. When we finally reached our destination, I could not help
but think of the garden of Eden in the bible. This home in Laikipia West, Ngobit, Kamura location was breathtaking and homely. The warm welcome, a nice lunch and a farm tour changed our perception about farming. Forget the hours spent in an office hunched over a desk. This was the real thing, the future of our country, the gold mine of our youthful generation. This is the awareness Kate the apple farmer is spreading to the whole world. That Kenya should be the next big exporter of Apples. We ought to give South Africa and Israel a run for their money. This i fully agreed with after the eye-opening interview. Meet Catherine Nyokabi Wambugu wife to Matthew Njenga and a mother. She grew up in Kagongo Ihua, Tetu, Nyeri county. Her father Peter Wambugu Kago and mother Mary Wanja Wambugu had four children 2 girls and two boys. Catherine was the first born and therefore her parents’ deputy and vision bearer. On their 2 acre farm, her parents tried mixed farming to provide for the family. At one time, her father ventured into the Aberdares forest nearby and saw a fruit tree laden with fruit and he got a brilliant idea that would forever change his destiny. He took the step of propagating this tree with others and that is how The Wambugu Apple was born. This was 1978 and by, their two acres were now purely for apple farming. Everyone pitched in to tend to them as this became the family income from the basics to schooling. The apple was doing well in the market in Nyeri, Naivasha and Nairobi. So Peter Wambugu, the family patriach made an investment move. He bought 20 acres of land in Laikipia from his proceeds at 15,000Kshs per acre. He then relocated his family from Nyeri and planted apples on his new farm. His Nyeri farm is still there. He assigned each of his four children 3acres each of apples to tend and the individual effort would be paid through the fruits each harvested and sold. In his wisdom, he knew that the sale of the fruits would motivate his children to work hard, learn to be independent and he challenged them to buy their own farms. Catherine took up this challenge whole-heartedly. This girl who had
attended Ihua Primary in Nyeri and later Waraza Jet boarding Secondary school in Kieni Nyeri made the decision to make farming her career. At Secondary School, she had taken up Agriculture, Biology and Commerce with the intention of adding value to her father’s hustle. At college, she undertook a course in Sales and Marketing and also trained as an Agronomist. All these have come in handy in her current venture. To explore the outside world, she was employed to sell shares in a company for a while but realized it was not her thing. She packed up and went back to her father’s home in Laikipia. She tended her share of apples aggressively and meanwhile, she met the love of her life and settled into marriage life. He became her greatest supporter and as the venture paid divideds, they bought their own farm three Km away from the fathers farm and planted The Wambugu Apple. Everything in this world has its challenges and so as they started to develop their 5 acres, where they are now settled and independent, the challenge of water cropped up. Ngobit in Laikipia East is semiarid, quite dry, yet farming requires water. A parent will always be your source of help and so they sourced water from the father’s farm. On their farm they created a dam as a reservoir. Soon, they thought of how else to utilize the dam and started fish farming. The fish was another

Entrepreneurship source of income and the folia was good for the fruit trees when they irrigated the farm. The apples require two things to thrive- water and mature. And with healthy living being the catchword today, their farm is basically thriving on pure organic farming. A family enterprise is based on teamwork.
