CLINCHING THE MEDALS OF LIFE Sunday 15th July 2018 was here. The grand finale was witnessed the world over. France received the gold medal under rains that washed their sweat soaked bodies after an intense, grueling but exhilarating World Cup competition. The Croatian team stood alongside, touted as underdogs but celebrated as heroes who had put their best foot forward and left such an impressive mark in the world having made it to the finals. So, what lessons did we glean from this mega event? For starters, nothing comes easy. We must work and work yet again to win and be part of winners. Also, life does throw surprises to all our well executed plans and though riding high in greatness, we are often humbled by losing. We saw great players not clinching those coveted goals and their teams eliminated. In addition, competition is not about enmity. Rather, it is about us, all humanity, coming together as one to celebrate the gifts bestowed on us and moving together as a team. Not once did we use bayonets instead of the ball and for that whole season, we all stood behind the
footballers as great fans. We forgot our differences as we thoroughly enjoyed a good game. And finally the end, fireworks exploded and we all put our pence worth contributions of the ‘hows,’ ’ifs’, and ‘I said so’ about the 4:2 goal verdict that defined who took the gold cup home. We then dusted ourselves off and went on with our lives. As we wake up each morning, what is our purpose? As we wind up each day, what do we put in our baskets as harvests from our daily
engagements? As we take stock of our losses and wins, what do we learn in terms of lessons for a greater fulfilling tomorrow? When we display the medals of daily achievements on the shelf of our today’s existence, what story can we give about each of those medals? Do we really deserve them? Do we live to carry on with the struggle for better or just sit back on yesterday’s glory? Do we have empty places on that shelf where medals should be displayed but we let opportunities just pass us by? And most importantly, do we appreciate those who have helped us to become winners? Dear readers, we are now in the last quarter of the year. Let us resolve to end well so that our finale shall be a time of celebration rather than regret. Remember another great match begins immediately the last whistle of that other last match is blown. It takes the effort of many others for victories to come by. Let us therefore be good team players. Enjoy your life and your reading of this edition.

Inspiring Lives Looking around at Ciata City Mall, I felt the energy, serene excitement, beauty and positivity for life. I sat for the interview with a wonderful person on a wonderful morning and this kickstarted my day. As she shared insights in a journey of triumph, the breakfast was a hearty affair. I made a resolve like Glade Byron Addam's has advised us, "Chase down your passion like it's the last bus of the night." Susan Njoki Mburu is a household name in vernacular radio. She made her debut in Kameme and currently reaches us from Gukena FM. Her smile is genuine, and her contentment real, covering well the uncertainties of her formative years. Her faith in God is evident and as I sought to know who this influential lady is, I reflected on the words of Gillan Anderson," I truly believe that we can overcome any hurdle that lies before us and create the life we want to live. I have seen it happen time and time again." Njoki was born as the first born of five siblings to a single mother in Nyeri County, Kigogoini Village. She was brought up in a strong Christian environment by two women who were dynamic and determined to beat the odds. She owes a lot to her strong-willed granny who is her number one mentor. She joined Kigogo-ini Primary School but her K.C.P.E results had a dark cloud over them as her next move was uncertain. There was no money for secondary school fees and apparently her academic journey had reached a dead end. After a while, though, things looked up as the two ladies in her life found
her a school and joining fees. She was shocked to the core on reporting day to find it was a mixed boarding school. This compounded her settling down woes as she had reported quite late. Her progress in the ensuing years was disrupted often by issues of school fees arrears. But deep in her, she knew she was moving closer to realising her dreams. So, she grew up, gathered knowledge and faced her many challenges day by day. Meanwhile she walked with God and fellowshipped at her local P.C.E.A Church. She made a decision to be a good responsible person who sought to make her life better. As Malcom X stated," If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything." Four years elapsed and KCSE was to be the following day in 1999. An assembly was called at school and she looked forward to the messages of hope and assurance the candidates would receive regarding the exam. To her utter dismay a list was read out and all those mentioned, including herself, had to leave immediately for home. Everyone with fees balances had to clear from the compound. This was a hectic low time for her. Gachoki, as she was known, was in a fix. This forced her to do her national exams on the first days as a day scholar. There was no money at home. She sought a place in the neighbourhood where she could put up for the nights. Her exams over, she went home and hustled alongside her family members. When the results were released, she could not access her exam documents for the fees balance was a noose on her neck.

Inspiring Lives One day, facing an uncertain future, she attended a revival meeting in a church in her area. As she walked to the venue, she made a plea to God,"Give me something to do in order to be independent". The power of prayer was being manifested in her life for soon after, her late cousin Njoki sent for her. She relocated to Nairobi and her cousin employed her for 3,000/= per month. Her first job involved selling ladies innerwear at various markets like Dagoreti, Toi and Wangige. It wasn’t easy for a young girl just out of school but it gave her her first shot at independence. The environment helped her to prove her worth in the faith and principles docket. She thanks God that she wasn’t influenced negatively. She learnt her first lessons in sales talk, public relations and business management first hand in the noisy, dusty and muddy market spaces. Her cousin cum employer housed her and she was comfortable. But she yearned to be independent and saved every coin she could. She purchased a few essentials –stove, bed, a few utensils – and moved out to a small room in

Kawangaware. She had achieved a milestone and was proud of herself. One evening as she visited her cousin, she prevailed on her to spend the night. She woke early, passed by her house to change before reporting at the market. On entering the compound, she found neighbours milling around and they assailed her with puzzling questions. "Where did they dump you? Did they hurt you?" she soon discovered that over the night, thieves had broken into her house, carted off everything. All her bare essentials were gone. Talk of disaster, co-incidence and God's grace all rolled into one! She retraced her steps, wore her cousin's clothes, was welcomed back to live there and
went off to continue with her market duties! A neighbour to her cousin later employed her in a boutique in Nairobi CBD. Working at the exhibition stalls was a promotion to her but deep down was a quest that called for fulfillment. She yearned to join college. Unfortunately, her KCSE certificate was still withheld. Financially, she was yet to break even. Her mother had been retrenched and her other siblings were in school. She longed for a brighter future. Over her lunch hours, she would go to Pastor Muiru's Odeon Maximum Miracle Centre for Fellowship. One day, she felt compelled to sow a seed of 500/= on the altar as she prayed for the release of her certificate. Her other prayer was to join college. At this point she cautions of some individuals who may take advantage of this act of faith to mint money from believers. She acknowledges
Inspiring Lives that in the right context, it has spiritual relevance. Soon after, her mother visited her at her Tom Mboya street workplace and surprised her. She had brought her exam documents. This further confirmed that God was real and cared for her. Her mom revealed that her retrenchment dues had been paid. Thus she had cleared the fees arrears for her daughter. Things were looking up. It was just God's timing for the owner closed the business shortly after this. There was a lot of competition from the many hawkers in town. Her mother asked her to look for a college. At this time, she was corenting with a lady she had met while working in the market. Cecilia Wanjiru Njoroge used to sew the petticoats that Njoki would sell. They were later joined by Cecilia's friend Carol. They lived harmoniously sharing the bills and duties and being friends. With time, she and Carol left to live in Kangemi to allow Cecilia to host her sister. Joining college was tricky. She wanted journalism yet those around her thought otherwise . Her late sister, whom she fondly refers to as 'Waithira Witu', got her a letter to join Kamweja Teachers' College in Nyeri but she really had no passion for teaching. One of her friends at the exhibition gave her a brochure that had been dropped there for Kenya Institute of Commercial Management. It was a small college that today is not in operation and she sat an international exam ICS in journalism. Her exam results were good but the real test began. She moved everywhere job hunting to no avail. She offered to volunteer but no one took her seriously. Never one to give up, her heart was fired and she persistently tarmacked. Carol also joined college and luckily found attachment. She would leave her in the house but she refused to give in to despair. Every morning she walked to Thiong'o Road at a Simu Jamii and make calls to potential employees. One call was most persistent. She called Kameme Radio every morning without fail seeking placement. The mantra, push until it happens, was her drive. Njogu wa
Njoroge, the person in charge of production must have wondered at her zeal. Since she had no phone, Carol's contact was cited in her many applications. One evening, Carol came home from work and casually mentioned that she had a message from a lady who requested that Njoki reports at Kameme early the following morning. A miracle had just happened and she was over the moon. That message changed her world and saw her starting as a rookie at Kameme FM. Initially, she was offered attachment for three months. She thanks God that she learnt everything from the basics of the newsroom to production and finally transmission. She cherishes the mentorship she got from the late Njoki Ndegwa who taught her with love and professionalism. It wasn’t easy. A myriad challenges, especially discouragements, came her way but she was determined to excel. The day came when Njogu informed her she would be going live the following Monday morning on her own without the anchor of Njoki Ndegwa. It was petrifying yet exciting. She was in a tricky situation. Some felt she couldn’t make it yet others encouraged her. She remembers Maina, from the production team encouraging her on. He gave her a one hour crash program on solo operation of her work station and the simple magic words, "You can do it! It is not complicated!" She did make it and as they say the rest is history. She has since thrived in Radio during various shows. The most challenging was the evening drive she inherited when PM left for Inooro. Part of the deal was to do beer branding yet she was a born-again Christian. She became philosophical and took it as part of her work. She knew deep down she never imbibed alcohol. The program she looked forward to every week was the Saturday night family show with Bishop JJ Gitahi. This is what actually made her, giving her the convinction that she was walking the right road. As she rose careerwise and cut a niche for herself, an offer came in late 2016. It wasn’t easy to break ties with Kameme. She agonised .
Was it wise to quit Media Max which had actually made her? Would this change really be for the better? Was this offer ordained by God? Ever prayerful, she dedicated time after her midmorning show to seek God and talk over the issue. She also sought advice from key mentors. She credits her consultations with Sabina Chege, currently the women Rep Murang'a county and Lucy Wa Ngunjiri, a colleague and spiritual mother. The two allowed her to make her decision but clearly pointed to her it was time to move on without fear. Those who listened to her say goodbye to her fans in that last lunchhour gospel show know it wasn’t easy. But she transited seamlessly to Gukena FM. She has been in Gukena Radio for two years now. She started with a morning show but currently does the Gukena Express at 3 pm. She is thankful for her fans countrywide for their support. On Sunday mornings, 6-10 am, she has a spiritual program. As she reflects on the role God has played in her life, she knows this is just what God would have her do. She recalls Lucy Ngunjiri telling her that with that kind of program and timing- she at Gukena, Muturi Muiru at inooro and Lucy Ngunjiri at Kameme- they would be christ's ambassadors on the Gikuyu airwaves. Apart from being a Radio Presenter who is Susan Njoki Mburu? With a radiant contented smile, Njoki reveals her other self. She is a wife and mother of three girls. Back in 2004 as she hustled,her circle of friends widened since Carol and Cecilia had prayer partners. She came to know Ken and Mburu at Kangemi. The friendship in the group was mutual but by 2005, Mburu proposed. At first she wasn’t sure how to go about it but she confided in Carol her friend who had been the person who introduced them. Eventually they got married. Mburu is a church elder and a family counselor currently based in China ministering to the Kenyan business community. She values her marriage and gives her family the best.

Destiny has been defined in the dictionary as what happens to somebody or what will happen to them in the future, especially things that they cannot change or avoid. By Menta T.

As a young person, what is your take on the term destiny? At one point, an American girl group came up together under the name ‘Destiny’s Child’ and most notable was Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Between 1997-2006, these girls from Texas made their presence known in the music world. They made a choice and influenced their destiny by utilizing their musical talents. Whereas many things in life are predestined and we really cannot change some facts of life, it is important to know that as human beings, we have great control of what happens to us. Many times as we grow up, we leave decisions to our caretakers and we fall into the routine that the adults structure around us. But as the reality of life

springs on us as young people, we come to the realization that we have a major role to play in shaping our destiny. The impact of destiny is a result of the four Ds: Discipline, Determination, Direction and Dependence on God. To capture the importance of these four values is a story of a young child born to a harness maker in France. All was well until he was injured in his father’s workshop at 5 years in the 1800’s. Tragedy had crossed his path for the result was becoming blind and at that tender age. However, direction veered him towards an opportunity. God was in this seemingly awful calamity. A local priest, Father Jacques assisted the boy so he attended the local village school and finally joined The Royal institute of Blind Youth in Paris.
Schooling is a process requiring great discipline and diligence. This blind young man struggled against the odds and developed the raised dot alphabet known today as Braille. It has seen thousands of blind people communicate and proceed adequately with their lives. Yes, he did struggle, and then died in 1852 of TB, but the truth is, he left a mark in the world despite his challenging circumstances. Dear youth, what about you? How are you shaping your destiny? Are you just whiling away precious seconds comfortable in that zone where all your problems will be sorted out by those you depend on? Are you aware that you are the captain of your ship? Whether you safely steer that ship that is your life safely to harbour or you crash it on
the icebergs and violent storms of the sea of life is a decision you must make and act upon. Former Vice President of United States Hubert H. Humphrey once stated: The future has several names For the weak it is ‘impossible’. For the fainthearted it is ‘unknown’. For the thoughtful and valiant it is ‘ideal’ It is time to stand up and stand out like the great man and woman you are destined to be. Do not be a victim of circumstances driven by FEAR which has been aptly described as false evidence appearing real! You have a future that began yesterday and is being nurtured today. In the bible, we read of destiny makers. Three young men of character, Daniel, Misheck and Abedinego, stood out for their hardworking nature (worked at the palace), their wisdom, the knowledge they had acquired, their being principled and their unwavering faith in the living God. They understood clearly the odds were against them but they were sure of their stand in Babylon and in that burning furnace and so they walked our triumphant. To those in secondary schools hell bent on burning your schools, we ask, is this right? To those countless young people imbibing, snorting and puffing your way to death in the cauldron of drugs, we ask, is this right? To those dancing the waltz of sexual immorality without a care, we ask, is this right? To those lazing around and not putting any effort in your studies or not making any effort to engage in meaningful employment, we ask, is this right? As we part for now, ponder on the words found in Isaiah 30:21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it, when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Take charge of your destiny. Adieu

Real life Music trends and rocks, music lulls and inspires, music is a hobby and a career, yes, music is something all human beings recognize and cherish. It is something close to life itself for actually life is music. From the clarinet to the harmonica; from the orchestra to a soloist; from gospel to secular; from the mp3 player to a turntable, we all cherish our moments with whatever is musical. So, who is a DJ? This deejay or disk jockey has been seen as someone out of our league, the bad boy so to say, that youngster you would not want your teenager to bring home. But are our perceptions of the DJ always correct? Is there some good we have overlooked in our biased conclusions? As lifestyles change, careers diversify and personal interests override traditional popular job options, we have embraced the DJ right into our sitting rooms and acknowledged it is a career option that can be honourabe. As I sat with DJ Macjoj for the interview, at Homeland Hotel on Thika Road, I was comfortable surrounded by very good service. My thoughts went back to my early school days when the teacher asked us what we wished to be after completing school. We each stood up dutifully and with stars in our eyes piped out the list one after the other: doctor, nurse, pilot, engineer and police officer. Then we sat down for our lessons eager to realize those dreams. There is no time being a DJ was cited back in the day. But fast forward, an impressionable kid today will just look you in the face and tell you they want to be a DJ! George Mark Kagoi is a confident focused young man on the move. He was born in Uthiru 87 and attended school in Westlands right from nursery school to completing standard 8 in Westlands Primary School. He proceeded to Nairobi school in the same hood for his secondary education. His family life and school life was stable and he was comfortably shielded from life on the rough edges. After
school, he joined Kenya Polytechnic to study computer Engineering for one year. He then proceeded for attachment at the UON for one and a half years. Throughout this learning phase, he learnt a lot about computers but his heart played a different beat. Way back in high school, he had developed an interest in music and this landed him at Ngong with the system Unit Power House who were quite a hit then. He learnt the basics and on his own went on a marathon practice spree to perfect his act. He also got mentorship from another great person, DJ Mo, who mentored him in 2002/2003 and from there he felt ready to embark on a solo flight. His family was at first hesitant but his determination and consistency won them over and for 12 years he was stationed at Sportsview Hotel spinning what he loved best as he learnt the ropes and bought his own equipment. As his confidence and expertise grew, he started getting involved in media. He appreciates the part Jeff Kuria and Jeremiah Kimani (Refree Mwenyewe) have played in his life. He could now experience a new environment from 2013 and in 2015 upto date he got a contract with Inooro Radio and with it an opening for a wider audience.

• Unique as he plays all genres of music, owns his own home equipment and also doubles as an MC. • Made a wise choice in deciding to follow his passion and invested in powerful equipment sourced from the UK making him independent and reliable.The QSE audio, powered speakers, pioneer mixers and lighting have not let him down. • A DJ is as good as the crowd he establishes a rapport with. He has learnt how to psyche his audience by playing different genres to test the ground; taking the mike and talking to the crowd to jazz them up thus engaging them; inviting ladies to start off the party mood and being professional in all these.

Real Life • He has a wonderful music collection which he updates by checking online what is trending and networking with other DJS especially younger ones to be updated on latest moves. • Has been inspired in the field by DJ Karis Junior formerly at Florida madhouse and currently a businessman. Also DJ Pinye whose positive character, sound business sense and his foray in radio have made an impact. Others are DJ Mo who guided him in his baby steps and DJ stylz. • Has the convinction being a DJ is a noble venture but cautions upcoming DJS that they should never be hyped by the fame but rather perfect the business side of the deal if they have to remain relevant. He cites to the youngsters the importance of discipline. An individual without principles in this field will be kicked out by the impact of alcohol and women. Reaping from this engagement results from progressive building of a brand requiring patience and showcasing of skills to create something worthwhile. • Though he has made it, he is not yet there where he can live large for challenges do rock the boat. Especially with upcoming DJs underquoting and the occasional client who may not pay in time. Fashion & Style Fashion is a big thing in the world today. Fashion has very many sides to it and thus everyone should seek the right information in order to get it right. Modelling entails a fashion model show casing various fashion aspects from a commercial perspective. It is an activity that can earn you some good cash as well as give you a chance to enjoy your hobby. People don’t know that we have many types of Modelling. The three major types are: • Fashion modelling • Commercial modelling • Fitness modelling • Fashion modelling is the most restricting and the models have to be tall, preferably from 5' 8 and above. Fashion models can do editorial print work on magazines or runway modelling. Any model with an interest to do Runway should be aware of runway expectations and they should do good training. • Commercial modelling is whereby models are used for advertising products. This is the broadest type of modelling and anyone can be a commercial model. All sizes, shapes and ages can do this. These are basically the models you see on tv adverts. • Fitness modeling This is for toned and well in shape models who are hired to advertise sportswear or gym equipment. • How to make it in the modelling industry: • Be patient with your work. The Gold in Honey
Whenever we hear the buzz of a bee, we become wary as we think of its sting. However, the bee is our friend as it hops from flower to flower to search for nectar. In its well organized life structure, it creates a substance savoured by many for its sweet taste. Our language teachers taught us the saying, "as sweet as honey". Even in the old testament, King Solomon urged his own kin, "My son, eat thou honey; because it is good; and the honey comb, which is sweet to thy taste." (Proverbs 24:13). But in the same breath, he cautioned that it is not good to eat too much honey (Proverbs 25:27). In matters health therefore, we must know that too much of a good thing is not benefitial, infact, it may become poisonous to the body.

Why Honey: • Honey has numerous components that are a gold mine to our bodies. No wonder that the Greeks call honey the "nectar of gods". Honey consists of nine acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes and protein which is the main component of pollen. • Honey is rapidly assimilated therefore an excellent quick source of energy. It provides a good source of muscular energy necessary for all human action and has great value as a restorative. Thus a good way to beat muscular fatigue and exhaustion. • Honey is rich in enzymes and minerals vital for good health. The high amount of nutrition and medicinal properties in honey has been used for healing purposes since early history. In a world where sports and especially athletics becomes important, honey can help any sportsperson to recuperate rapidly from severe exertion and show less evidence of fatigue. It is useful for arthritis. • Honey can be mixed with other
natural substances for health effects. When mixed with garlic, it becomes one of broad spectrum antibiotics effective for pulmonary infections. Mixed with Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper and citric acid; it makes a very strong concoction with a lot of health benefits. Thus good for diabetes, hypertension, Asthma, arthritis, H-pylori bacteria, fatigue and IBS .
