ANDY SWEET EXHIBITION

“

THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA -FIU The Face of America Magazine

The Face of America Magazine

Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980. The exhibition celebrates the legendary photographer’s work in the late 1970s capturing the colorful elderly Jewish community in South Beach, before his death at a young age. Andy Sweet (1953-1982)’s work was almost lost forever, and was rescued thanks to the work of his sister, Ellen Sweet Moss, and her husband Stan Hughes. The exhibition will feature an intimate look inside the artist’s working process, with more than 60 images, plus original photographs that have never been shown, handpicked by Sweet’s family exclusively for this museum show.

The Face of America Magazine

South Beach was predominantly a Jewish enclave in the late 1970s when Andy Sweet photographed the elderly population, and many of the residents were New York transplants and Holocaust survivors. Before preservationists rescued the Art Deco buildings and designated the district onto the National Register of Historic Places, before Miami Vice transformed Miami’s image worldwide, and way before the hip and trendy renaissance of the area, South Beach was home to the largest number of Jewish retirees in America.

The Timeline Book narrates the entire Eagle voyage from inspection, undocking, lunar surface descent, stay, and ascent, to the rendezvous with the command module Columbia in lunar orbit. The book was flown aboard the Eagle and was located precisely between Commander Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Aldrin as they made the historic landing, amidst alarms ringing and with only about 25 seconds of fuel remaining at landing.

AUCTIONED AT PHILLIPS, NEW YORK, 10 DECEMBER 2019 The Face of America Magazine

Phillips to offer Marlon Brando’s long lost Rolex GMT-Master, worn in “Apocalypse Now”, in New York city, on 10 December 2019. It could very well become one of the most expensive watches in the World.

The Face of America Magazine

Phillips’ flagship New York watch auction, GAME CHANGERS will offer what is undoubtedly the most important wristwatch formerly owned by Academy Award® winner Marlon Brando. An iconic Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675, this watch was worn by Brando in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, released in August 1979. With its absolutely superb provenance, it is the watch seen by millions on the wrist of Colonel Walter E. Kurtz – the character played by Brando – and long thought to have been missing. In addition to its role on the silver screen, the GMT-Master being offered at Phillips is made even more extraordinary by the never-before-seen engraving on the caseback, “M. Brando,” hand-engraved by Marlon Brando himself.

The Face of America Magazine

This watch remained in Brando’s possession until 1995, when he gifted it to his daughter, Petra Brando Fischer. The auction this December marks the watch’s first time ever being shown publicly and offered for sale since having been acquired by the legendary actor in the early 1970s.

Meet Claudia Up early in the morning to take in charge of the breakfast at Brewery Gulch Inn, she will host you with the specials. Originally from Mexico city, her parents left the country when she was eleven for better life to Fort Bragg. And now it’s her home maybe more than Mexico City. Does she ever consider moving out? Not sure for her who have not been further than the Wisconsin state. She needs the calm and easy pace this area offers, so maybe later, but not in a big city.

Meet Chef Cooper Bigard Away from the burst of the big cities, he is not racing for a prestigious position but he is racing for the quality of the food. 12 year ago he became a chef in DC. With a French cuisine foundation and Alain Passard as a model he is part of these new chefs who are looking for more simple and natural ingredients. After numerous busy places he worked, he is now the Chef of this incredible and remote ranch where he is free to follow his heart. He is working not only on sustainability, but also on a locally sourced cuisine. For him, it starts by having his own garden where he grows all the vegetables you can find in our plate. This young Chef is definitely to follow as a trailblazer of a new approach of cuisine.

RIVIAN ELECTRIC SUV The Face of America Magazine

The R1T, a 5-passenger pickup truck, debuted at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on Nov. 26, and the R1S, a 7-passenger SUV, was revealed at the automaker’s press conference at Automobility on Nov. 27. With up to 400+ miles in electric range, a wading depth of 1 meter, lockable storage bins that can fit the bulkiest of gear, and the performance and precise control of quad-motor AWD, Rivian vehicles have been developed to help customers get out and explore the world. Both vehicles will be produced at Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal IL.

The Face of America Magazine

“We’re launching Rivian with two vehicles that reimagine the pickup and SUV segments,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. “I started Rivian to deliver products that the world didn’t already have – to redefine expectations through the application of technology and innovation. Starting with a clean sheet, we have spent years developing the technology to deliver the ideal vehicle for active customers. This means having great driving dynamics on any surface on- or off-road, providing cargo solutions to easily store any type of gear, whether it’s a surf board or a fishing rod and, very importantly, being capable of driving long distances on a single charge. From the inside out, Rivian has developed its vehicles with adventurers at the core of every design and engineering decision. The R1T and R1S are the result of all this work and we are excited to finally introduce these products to the world.”

The Face of America Magazine

The foundation of the R1T and R1S is Rivian’s skateboard platform, which efficiently packages the battery pack, drive units, suspension, braking and thermal system all below the height of the wheel, leaving the space above for occupants and their gear. Beyond the packaging benefits, this architecture delivers a low center of gravity that supports the vehicle’s agility and stability. The suspension features dynamic roll control and adaptive dampers along with ride-height adjustable air-suspension – allowing the suspension to be adjusted for highway comfort, on-road performance or off-road capability.

URWEK AMC ATOMIC CLOCK AND WATCH

The Face of America Magazine

In creating the AMC Atomic clock and watch, URWERK has created a physical marriage between two approaches to chronometry. AMC is not just a fascinating combination of atomic, and mechanical systems; it brings together the two branches of watchmaking in one hybrid device, successfully bridging an existential chasm that has divided horology since the creation of the first piezoelectric oscillator.

The Face of America Magazine

The URWERK AMC is a hybrid timekeeping construction that consists of two autonomous, but linked, systems. The first part – the Atomolith - is a fixed base unit, a 35kg aluminium-housed atomic clock with roughly the same dimensions as a midsized computer tower. The second part is a mobile unit, a purely mechanical watch that can be worn on the wrist or securely docked within the base unit.

The Face of America Magazine

When worn, the accuracy of the mobile unit is dictated by its 4Hz (28,800vph) mechanical oscillator and the conditions it is subjected to. When docked, the mobile unit is synchronised with its base unit, via a complex and ingenious system that senses any timing discrepancy between the two and chronometrically aligns the mechanical movement of the wristwatch with the high-accuracy atomic clock.

VOCIER SUITCASES The Face of America Magazine

How did this young, innovative luggage brand begin? It all started with a question: How can I travel with a suit without it looking like I slept in it? Michael Kogelnik and Vinzent Wuttke started their early careers in investment banking and therefore made frequent business trips. They decided to create the best possible suitcases and travel bags with the frequent business traveler in mind.

The Face of America Magazine

From the beginning, the idea behind the VOCIER luggage brand was to combine utility with style. VOCIER luggage had to ensure that even the most delicate suit would arrive at its destination safely and wrinkle-free, ‘’But we also wanted our travel bags to be hand-made with the finest fabrics and softest leathers in Europe,’’ says Michael.

HOMES

NOLLA CABIN BY NESTE

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY CABIN The Face of America Magazine

Nolla cabin – a sustainable summer cottage built in 2018 – was envisioned by Robin Falck and developed by Neste to explore sustainable living. To make sure continuum applies the trend of sustainable living, Neste is organising a competition where people don’t need to travel to experience the Nolla cabin, but can rather build their own cabins. In total, 12 lucky winners can obtain the blueprints of the Nolla cabin.

The Face of America Magazine

Nolla, the Zero Cabin, was designed to have as small an environmental impact as possible. The prototype of the A-framed cabin was built on the idyllic Vallisaari island in Finland. Neste’s objective was to prove that modern luxury experiences do not have to take a toll on the environment. The cabin’s energy supply was made entirely renewable: electricity is generated by solar panels, whilst the Wallas stove, reserved for cooking and heating, runs entirely on Neste MY Renewable Diesel™. The fuel is made 100% from waste and residue raw materials, and has about 90% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel.

The Face of America Magazine

In the competition, the prize itself is a set of blueprints of the cabin and all building and materials must be organized by the winner. The idea of the competition is to prove that the Nolla cabin can be built anywhere from local materials and that it suits any environment. All entrants have to do to win is to post a picture of a scenery they wish to enjoy out of the unique triangular window. Entrants should post the picture on Instagram using the hashtag #mynolla along with a short explanation of what they would use the cabin for. The best entries can be seen at: neste.com/journeytozero/ zerotravel.

Warmth is the best way to describe Osteria57. Thanks to the Restaurateur Emanuele Nigro’s vision, this restaurant has this warm feeling of enjoying good food and good company. By opening this restaurant in Sept. 2017, Emanuele wanted to pursue his vision of offering New Yorkers a different kind of menu, combining seafood choices with tasty vegetarian dishes, as well as vegan and gluten free options. Emanuele works with a selection of healthy ingredients to which he proudly adds vegan and gluten free options. His creations are inspired by traditional Italian cuisine and foreign inspirations brought back from his several travels in Central America, Brazil and India. We love the back-room, with walls completely covered with a rich tapestry made of plant motifs, foliage and enigmatic animals. With a long bar, and an experienced mixologist, this “place of miracles” (the name of the tapestry) is the room where the journey starts. It is great for parties and private events.
