Welcome from Bishop Doran It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Coláiste Chiaráin, a school rooted in the rich spiritual and educational tradition of Clonmacnoise and inspired by the values of faith, hope and community. At Coláiste Chiaráin, students are encouraged to grow personally, academically, spiritually and socially in a caring and supportive environment. Beginning your journey at Coláiste Chiaráin Moving from primary to post-primary is a major milestone in a young person’s life. We understand that this can be an exciting and daunting time for students and their families. That’s why we go above and beyond to make the transition into First Year as smooth, supportive and reassuring as possible. Our comprehensive First Year Programme includes:
Transfer Programme Coláiste Chiaráin invites incoming students to attend our school in June for a bespoke induction programme delivered by our School Completion Team. This programme provides students with the opportunity to: •
Get to know their new school and classmates

Participate in engaging team building tasks
•
Get organised with their lockers and textbooks
Familiarising themselves with the school, meeting future classmates and getting to know some of the teaching staff is very reassuring for students and their parents/guardians.

Student Induction
Student Assessment All Junior Cycle classes in Coláiste Chiaráin are mixed ability. In order to best assess the needs of our students and create classes where each student can reach their full potential, students sit an assessment in advance of the new school year.
On their first day in Coláiste Chiaráin, First Year students take part in an induction day. This gives them a chance to become familiar with the school building and meet their fellow classmates, teachers, tutors, year head and other members of staff.

Mentoring
We value partnership with parents/guardians, holding information evenings both before and after entry to keep families fully informed and involved.
All First Year students participate in our mentoring programme, where they are paired with a senior student who acts as their ‘Big Brother/Big Sister’. Through a co-ordinated programme run by our School Completion Team, friendships are forged and it ensures students always have someone to ask for advice or a friendly face to turn to if required.
Taster Programme Our First Years take part in a taster programme to help them make an informed decision regarding which subjects will best suit their interests and abilities. They get an opportunity to sample the entire suite of 10 optional subjects before choosing 3.
Welcoming Reception From the moment students and parents enter Coláiste Chiaráin, they are greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our reception team of Caroline, Sinéad and Catherine, are available to assist parents, students and visitors with queries or support they may need throughout the school year.
Every First Year class is assigned a caring class Tutor, overseen by a dedicated Year Head, who monitors both academic and personal development.

Curriculum JUNIOR CYCLE
For the first three years in secondary school students follow the Junior Cycle Programme, typically studying 10 subjects - 7 from the core list and 3 optional subjects. Following a taster programme, which gives students the opportunity to experience all 10 subjects on offer, our Guidance Department hosts a webinar for parents and guardians to answer any questions you may have about subject choice. English, Gaeilge and Mathematics are assessed at both Higher and Ordinary level. All other subjects are at Common level. The Junior Cycle is assessed using a combination of continuous and final assessments. During second and third year, students complete a series of Classroom Based Assessments. They also sit exams at the end of third year. Students’ achievements are recorded on their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement and this is presented to students on completion of the Junior Cycle Programme. All Junior Cycle students follow a comprehensive Wellbeing programme. Wellbeing is a combination of PE, SPHE, CSPE and Guidance. CORE SUBJECTS

SENIOR CYCLE In Fifth and Sixth Year, students begin working towards their Leaving Certification. They choose between the Leaving Certification Traditional Pathway (LC) or the Leaving Certification Applied (LCA) pathway. The Guidance Department support students in making this decision, while hosting webinars for parents/ guardians. In LC students choose an average of seven subjects, which must include Gaeilge, English and Mathematics. We have a large, varied range of 22 optional subjects on offer for students to choose from. ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS Our dedicated Additional Educational Needs (AEN) team works closely with students, parents and teachers to ensure all students are supported in reaching their individual potential. We provide a caring, inclusive environment where students receive tailored support to help them succeed academically and socially. Our three ASD special classes, Willow, Hazel & Cedar, provide a supportive and structured learning environment where students are encouraged to develop independence, confidence and life skills while participating in the wider school community.

ACADEMIC MENTORING Student progress is carefully monitored throughout the year to ensure every learner is supported and challenged appropriately. Our academic mentoring programme, titled “Aim Higher” uses regular assessment data to help students stay focused and achieve their academic goals.
STUDY SKILLS Students are supported in developing effective study habits and organisational skills throughout their time in Coláiste Chiaráin. Workshops, classroom strategies and guidance support students in becoming confident, independent learners.

CANTEEN - Our school canteen provides
students with a welcoming space and a variety of nutritious food options each day. The canteen supports healthy eating and offers students an opportunity to relax and socialise during break times. All students are welcome to attend Breakfast Club, which is open every morning before school, providing free tea and toast, for students arriving on-site early.
LIBRARY The school library is a valuable learning resource that encourages reading, research and independent study. Students have access to a wide range of literature, study materials and quiet study spaces to support their learning journey.

Coláiste Chiaráin LINKS WITH THE COMMUNITY Coláiste Chiaráin values strong connections with the local community. Through partnerships with organisations, charities, businesses and sporting groups, students are encouraged to become active, responsible and engaged members of society.
SCHOOL TOURS School tours provide students with valuable educational, cultural and social experiences beyond the classroom. Students have opportunities to participate in both national and international trips that enhance learning and create lasting memories.
CLUBS AND SOCIETIES A wide range of clubs and societies allows students to explore their interests, develop talents and make new friendships. Participation in extracurricular activities helps students build confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging within the school community.
MATHS SUPPORT CENTRE Our free after school Maths Support Centre provides students with extra support in a friendly and encouraging environment. Students can receive help with homework, revision, problem-solving and exam preparation from experienced maths teachers. The centre helps students build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics.
AFTER-SCHOOL STUDY Supervised study is available for students with two options (1 hour or 2 hours): 4pm-5pm/6pm Monday to Thursday and 1:30pm-2:30/3:30pm on Fridays. A teacher is available to support students during each session.

Transition Year Programme The Transition Year Programme is a unique one-year optional programme. It promotes the personal, social, and educational development of students. It prepares them for their role as autonomous participative and responsible members of society. TY encourages selfdirected and independent learning. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable skills including critical thinking and creative problem solving. Another highlight of TY is the annual musical production. Students have the opportunity to take part in a large-scale performance, whether on stage as actors, or behind the scenes in roles such as stage design, public relations, costume, or make-up. This project builds teamwork, creativity, and confidence.
A Year of Growth, Discovery & Opportunity Below is a list of the various activities and programmes that our students could partake in. Each year we seek student feedback to adapt and evolve our programme which could include - Car & Driver Safety, Horticulture, First Aid, Mini Company, Forensic Science, Young Social Innovator, Gaisce, John Paul II, Mentoring, Coding, GAA Coaching Course, GAA Future Leaders, Media Studies, Scifest, Personal Development to name but a few! A key element of TY is the work placement programme. Each Friday, students engage in work placements, giving them the chance to explore areas of personal interest. This experience not only opens doors to future career possibilities but also fosters a strong sense of accountability and responsibility.

Clubs and Societies Our students thrive through a wide-ranging extracurricular programme that nurtures their talents, develops their skills and helps them form lasting friendships. Situated on a 28-acre site with a state-of-the-art PE Hall, Fitness Suite and external sports facilities, including an astro pitch, GAA and Padel facilities, we are proud to offer a rich and varied programme of activities that supports the development of well-rounded, confident and passionate young people. The transition from primary to post-primary school can be challenging, but participation in clubs, societies and sports helps students feel confident in their new surroundings and builds a strong sense of community. We actively encourage students to take part in a wide range of co-curricular activities that complement their classroom learning. Our students have achieved recognition at local, regional and national levels through participation in Writing contents, Debating, Public Speaking events, Science and Mathematics competitions.
