aith and politics have always shared a complicated relationship in the United States, a nation founded on both religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Today, that relationship is more visible and contested than ever.

he word “cult” conjures images of secret rituals, robed ceremonies and devotion to an oddly charismatic leader. But in ancient Greece 3,000 years ago, cults were not extremist groups. Instead, they were ordinary religious communities, woven into daily life and civic tradition.
