The decision comes after the tech giant discovered that Gemini’s artiﬁcial intelligence (AI) struggled with certain non-English queries, prompting CEO Sundar Pichai to prioritize a comprehensive solution before unveiling the groundbreaking model. AI’s reliability in handling non-English queries The Information revealed that Google had planned an elaborate debut for Gemini, including a series of events across California, New York, and Washington, speciﬁcally targeting politicians and policymakers. However, concerns about the AI’s reliability in handling nonEnglish queries led to a strategic delay. Google aims to ensure global language support, positioning Gemini model to either match or surpass the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4, a standard the company is reported to have achieved in certain aspects, according to sources.

In a welcome development for prospective homebuyers, mortgage rates have fallen for the fifth consecutive week, providing a slight reprieve in a market grappling with high rates and limited housing inventory. According to the latest data released by Freddie Mac on Thursday, the average rate on the widely used 30-year fixed mortgage dipped from 7.29% to 7.22%, contributing to a cumulative drop of over half a percentage point since the end of October. Despite this decline, rates have yet to fall below 7% for more than three months. Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) The decrease in mortgage rates has prompted a modest increase in purchase applications, with a 5% rise on a seasonally adjusted basis for the week ending November 19, as reported by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). However, overall purchase activity remains nearly 20% lower than the same period last year. Analysts suggest that the trajectory of mortgage rates may hinge on the Federal Reserve’s actions regarding inflation. Orphe Divounguy, senior macroeconomist at Zillow Home Loans, noted that if core inflation and economic activity continue to moderate, mortgage rates could stabilize. However, uncertainties remain, as Divounguy cautioned that higher-than-expected wage growth in November, as indicated in next week’s employment report, could lead to a resurgence in yields.

As of the latest Economist Intelligence Unit’s Worldwide Cost of Living report for 2023, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco continue to hold their positions as some of the most expensive cities worldwide. The report, conducted between August 14 and September of 2023 and based on data from 173 major cities, reveals noteworthy shifts in the global cost of living landscape. New York, a perennial contender for the top spot, now shares the third position with Geneva, down from its tie for first place with Singapore in the previous year. Zurich claimed the first rank, displacing both New York and Singapore, attributed in part to the robust Swiss franc and elevated prices for groceries, household goods, and services, as outlined in the report. Noteworthy factors influencing this trend While Los Angeles secured the sixth position on the list, San Francisco landed in the tenth spot, solidifying their status as some of the costliest places to reside globally. The survey considered various factors, including inflation averages, excluding Kiev and Caracas, and analyzed the prices of over 200 commonly used goods and services. The report indicates a 7.4 percent rise in prices for these goods and services over the past year. Although this figure is a slight reduction from the previous year’s 8.1 percent, it still represents a significant increase compared to trends observed between 2017 and 2021. Noteworthy factors influencing this trend include a decrease in supply-chain issues, partly attributed to China lifting its COVID-19 restrictions in the latter part of the preceding year.
