As I read the January & February 2021 issue of the Energy Cooperative Times Magazine, I was struck by Director Nelson Smith’s article in which he wrote that “the problems of 2020 were not things we can influence, so we need to turn to the things that we can influence.” As I read that thought provoking message, it occurred to me that the Energy Cooperative Foundation, what we call Operation Round Up, is a perfect opportunity for those of us who are Energy Cooperative members to put Director Smith’s words into action. By adding just pennies to our monthly Energy Cooperative bill, we can exert so much more influence than we could ever hope to do on our own. Those few pennies each month can collectively make a difference to local communities and charitable organizations that are struggling to achieve goals and objectives severely impacted by “things that could not be influenced” during the past several months. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, I am pleased to report that during 2020 the Round Up Foundation made awards totaling $194,048 to 57 public, charitable organizations (501 (c) 3 IRS approved) located in 20 different communities throughout The Energy Cooperative service area. Awards were made based on the financial and/or emergency need of the applying organization and not to support ordinary operating expenses or budgetary
shortfalls. Making those decisions was not easy for Board members. In fact, we were unable to support 16 requests for a variety of reasons. But supporting those deserving organizations was not all we were able to accomplish last year. Because of the generosity of our participating members the Foundation Board also awarded $20,000 in scholarships to 8 area high school seniors to enable them to continue their education at the next level. Three additional scholarships totaling $7,500 were awarded in memory of Bruce A. Sumner and John C. “Jay” Barker, two special men whose lives impacted The Energy Cooperative and the community in significant ways. The Foundation Board members and I extend our sincere thanks to those Energy Cooperative members who saw fit to make a difference last year by supporting Operation Round Up. Supporting the Round Up Foundation in 2021 is one way “we can turn to the things we can influence” as Director Nelson Smith suggested. With gratitude and appreciation,
