MMeetJordan,aRichmondHeightsstudent beginningtheirdayattheUpperSchool. AsJordanwalksthroughthefrontdoors, staffmembersgreetthembyname.A classmatestopstotalkaboutlastnight’s game.Ateacheraskshowaprojectis comingalong.Inadistrictthissize,these momentsarepartoftheroutine—notthe exception.

AtRichmondHeightsLocalSchools, relationshipsarewovenintotheschool day.Withjusttwobuildingsservingthe entirecity,thedistrictoperatesasa close-knitlearningcommunitywhere studentsareknown,supportedand challenged.Thatsenseofbelongingshapes everythingfromclassroominstructionto long-termplanning.

Jordan’sschedulereflectsthebreadthof opportunitiesavailable.Themorning mightbeginwithanAdvancedPlacement course,followedbyahands-onclassthat connectslearningtoreal-worldcareers. Betweenperiods,Jordanmovesthrougha 21st-centuryLearningCenterthatopened in2021.Theschoolfeelsfamiliarand welcoming,whereeducatorsunderstand eachstudent’sstrengths,interestsand goals.Laterintheday,Jordanheadstothe CuyahogaCountylibrary—located directlyoncampus—beforestayingafter schoolforaclubmeetingorpractice.

ADistrictRootedinPurpose

LocatedsoutheastofCleveland,Ohio, RichmondHeightsLocalSchoolsserves acityofapproximately10,000residents andistheonlypublicschooldistrictin thecommunity Thedistrictincludes oneelementaryschoolservinggrades PreK–6andoneupperschoolserving grades7–12,allowingforcontinuityand strongrelationshipsacrossgradelevels.

ProgramsThatDifferentiateandBuild SpartanPride

RichmondHeightsoffersa comprehensiveacademicprogram designedtomeetstudentswheretheyare whilepreparingthemforwhatevercomes next,whethercollege,careerorthe military.Studentscanchoosefrom 14AdvancedPlacementcourses,the EarlyCollegeEarlyCareerprogram, andagrowingmenuofcareer-focused pathways.

Oneofthedistrict’smostdistinctive offeringsisitsAviationcareerpathway, developedthroughapartnershipwiththe MayfieldExcelTECCConsortium. Scheduledtolaunchinthe2026–2027 schoolyear,thefullyaccredited programwillbehostedatRichmond Heights,givingstudentshands-on exposuretoaviationmechanics, aerospacesystemsandhigh-demand technicalcareers.Fewdistrictsofsimilar sizecanoffersuchaspecializedand forward-lookingprogram.

Anotherdefiningfeatureisthedistrict’s co-locatedcommunitylibrary,theonlyoneof itskindinthecountyembeddedwithina schoolbuilding.Thelibraryservesstudents andcommunitymembers,reinforcingtheidea thatschoolsarecentraltocommunitylifeand thatlearningextendsbeyondtheclassroom.

Attheelementarylevel,RichmondHeightshas investedinoutdoorlearningspacesthatinclude acourtyardclassroom,butterflygarden,Safety Townandinteractiveplayareas.Thesespaces supporthands-onlearning,creativityand social-emotionalgrowthwhilegiving educatorsflexibleinstructionaloptions.

ADiverseCommunitywithStrong Outcomes

RichmondHeightsservesapproximately 780students.Thestudentpopulationis predominantlyBlack(87%),with representationfrommultiracial,Hispanic, White,andAsianorPacificIslanderfamilies. About68%ofstudentsareidentifiedas economicallydisadvantaged,15.9%receive specialeducationservices,andjustover 2%areEnglishlearners.

Despitethechallengesmanystudentsface,outcomes remainstrong.Thedistrictreportsa100%graduation rate—almostunheardof—anda92.8%attendance rate.Theclassof2025earnedmorethan$1millionin scholarships,wereacceptedtomorethan2,000colleges anduniversitiesacrosssixstates,and60%were college-bound,34%enteredtheworkforce,and6% enlistedinthemilitary.Thesmallbutmightyclassof 61studentsalsoearned142CollegeCreditPluscredits.

MeetingStudents’IndividualNeeds

PersonalizationisastrengthofRichmondHeights. Witha15:1student-to-teacherratioanda1:1 technologyprogram,educatorsareabletotailor instructionandrespondquicklytostudentneeds. Thedistrictalsoboastsafive-starStepUpToQuality preschool,givingitsearliestlearnersastrongstart. Supportisinplaceforstudentswithdisabilities,English learnersandthoseneedingacademicintervention,while enrichmentopportunitieschallengeadvancedlearners.

Social-emotionallearningisembeddedthroughoutthe district.Peer-to-peerprograms,mentalhealthawareness initiatives,andpartnershipsthatprovidetutoring,public speaking,andmentoringensurestudentsreceivesupport beyondacademics.Theseeffortsreflectaholistic understandingofstudentsuccess.

ThePeopleandDepartmentsBehind theWork

Appointedsuperintendentin2024, Dr.MarnishaBrownhasbeenpartof theRichmondHeightsLocalSchools communitysince2014,witha professionalbackgroundthatspans classroomteaching,schoolleadership andstudentsupportroles.

RichmondHeights’successis supportedbyacollaborativeand dedicatedstaffworkingtowardashared goal.Academicandstudentservices teamsfocusoncurriculum,instruction andintervention.Operations, transportation,foodservicesand facilitiesensuresafe,well-maintained environments,despiteagingfacilities. Andtechnologystaffsupportthousands ofdevicesanddistrict-widesystems thatkeeplearningconnected.

Strongfiscaloversightisanotherpoint ofpride.Despitefinancialchallenges relatedtostateandfederalfunding changesandrecentlegislation,the districthasearnedacleanauditfrom theAuditorofStateforseveralyears runningandmaintainsanA+bond ratingfromS&PGlobal,reflecting responsiblestewardshipoftaxpayer dollars.Thedistricthasalsosecured morethan$300,000ingrantsinrecent yearstosupportsafety,wellness,and collegeandcareerreadiness.

CommitmenttoEquityandInclusion

StudentsatRichmondHeightshaveaccess toawidearrayofextracurricular opportunities.Athleticsincludeseven varsitysports,withseveralrecent achievements:

CareerexplorationbeginsearlyatRichmond Heights.Elementarystudentsparticipatein careerdays,whileolderstudentsengagein career-focusedcoursework,guestspeaker series,collegevisitsandindustryfieldtrips toorganizationssuchastheFBI.

Partnershipswithhighereducation institutions,militaryrepresentativesand localprofessionalsprovidementorshipand networkingopportunitiesthathelpstudents makeinformeddecisionsabouttheirfutures.

Thedistrictalsoworkscloselywiththe cityofRichmondHeightsandlocal organizationstohosteventsthat strengthenschool-community connections,fromback-to-school celebrationstofamilyresourcefairs.

LeadingtheWayforPublic Education

RichmondHeightsLocalSchoolshas alsotakenonaleadershiprolebeyond itsborders.AsaleadplaintiffinOhio’s voucherlawsuit,thedistrictis advocatingforfairandconstitutional fundingforpublicschools.Whenthe EdChoicevoucherprogramwasruled unconstitutional,RichmondHeights stoodattheforefrontofthedecision, reinforcingitscommitmenttostudents, familiesandtaxpayerswhoinvestin publiceducation.

A Legacy Built on Opportunity

SanBenitoHighSchoolDistrictoperatesasa single-schooldistrict,withHollisterHigh Schoolservingapproximately3,400studentsin gradesninethroughtwelvefromvariouspartsof SanBenitoCounty

AsoneofthelargesthighschoolsinNorthern California,thecampuseffectivelybalancessize withpersonalconnection.Itsunifiedstructure allowsthedistricttotailorlearningexperiences whileofferingabroadrangeofacademicand extracurricularprograms.

ThedistrictservesprimarilyaHispanic studentpopulation,manyofwhomqualify forfreeorreduced-pricemeals.Diversityis consideredafoundationalelementfor thoughtfulplanningandensuringequitable accesstoopportunities.

LearningDesignedforLifeBeyond Graduation

HollisterHighSchooldesignsitsacademic programtopreparestudentsforlifeafter graduation,goingbeyondjustpreparingthem fortests.ThecurriculumincludesA–G alignedcourses,honorsclasses,Advanced Placementofferings,andavarietyof pathwaysthatcatertodiverseinterests andgoals.

CareerTechnicalEducationplaysavitalrole, featuring13pathwaysacrossfieldssuchas agriculture,engineering,healthscience, business,andthearts.Throughcapstone projects,certifications,andhands-onlearning experiences,studentsareabletoconnecttheir classroomeducationtoreal-worldworkand theneedsoflocalindustries.

BuildingMomentuminAdvanced Placement

HollisterHighSchool’sAdvancedPlacement (AP)program,whichhasbeennamedtothe CollegeBoard’sAPProgramHonorRollfor thepastthreeyears,isbuildingreal momentum.Morestudentsaresteppinginto college-levelcoursework,moreareearning qualifyingexamscores,andthedistrictis puttingsystemsinplacetohelpevenmore studentsparticipateandsucceed.

Oneoftheclearestsignsofgrowthis participation.HollisterHighSchoolreached 907studentsenrolledinAPcoursesin 2024–25,markingthehighestenrollment showninthereport’smulti-yeartrendline. ThatincreasemattersbecauseAPclasses don’tjustrepresentatougheracademic option;theyoftenopendoorstoconfidence, collegecredit,andtheskillsstudentsneedto thriveaftergraduation.

Justasencouragingiswhat’shappeningonthe examside.Thereportshowscontinued improvementinthepercentageofAPexamscores earninga3orhigher—widelyrecognizedasa strongindicatorofcollegereadiness.Inthe five-yearperformancetrendchart,Hollisterrises from53percentin2021to81percentin2025, pairedwithanaverageAPscoreof3.2in2024–25. Thoseresultsreflectmorethantest-day performance;theysuggeststudentsareincreasingly preparedtomeetthedemandsofAPcoursework.

Severalindividualcoursesstandoutasbrightspots, outperformingstateaveragesbynotablemargins. Thecoursecomparisontableshighlightparticularly strongresultsinclassessuchasAPU.S. Government,whichposteda100percentpassrate, alongwithhigh-performingoutcomesin APMacroeconomics,APMicroeconomics, APEuropeanHistory,APEnglishLiterature, APSpanishLiterature,andAPPrecalculus.Ina programaslargeasHollister’s,thosekindsofwins helpsetthetoneforacultureofhighexpectations, andtheyoffermodelsworthstudying andreplicating.

HollisterHighisalsopreparingtoexpandwhatthe APjourneycanlooklikeforstudentsearlierinhigh schoolbyintroducingAPSeminarfor10th-grade students,amovethatcouldhelpstudentsbuildthe research,writing,andcommunicationskillsthat supportsuccessacrossmultipleAPcourses.

PersonalizedPathwayswithaHeadStarton CollegeandCareers

HollisterHighSchoolcontinuestorefinehow studentsexperiencelearningbyexpanding academy-basedprogramsandearlycollegeoptions. TheAcademyofHealthScience,launchedinfall 2024,offersafour-yearpathwayintohealthcare fieldssuchaspre-medicine,emergencycare,public health,andsportsmedicine.

Studentslearnthroughprojects,internships,and dualenrollment,supportedbypartnershipswith HazelHawkinsMemorialHospitalandGavilan College.TheEarlyCollegeAcademyaddsanother option,allowingstudentstoearntransferable collegecreditatnocostwhilebuildingconfidence insmall,supportivecohorts.

SharedClassrooms,StrongerOutcomes

HollisterHighSchoolhasmadeinclusiveinstructiona centralpartofitsacademicidentitythrougha long-standingco-teachingmodel.Inthisapproach, generaleducationandspecialeducationteacherswork togetherinthesameclassroom,ensuringthatstudents withdisabilitiesandlong-termEnglishlearnersreceive high-qualityeducationinrigorousgeneral educationsettings.

Fullyimplementedbythe2019–20schoolyear,this modelhasresultedinhighercoursepassratesand improvedgraduationoutcomes.Equallyimportant, studentsreportthattheseclassroomsfeelmore supportive,andteachersbenefitfromenhanced collaborationandsharedinstructionalpractices.

ThestudentsupportservicesatHollisterHighSchool gobeyondjustmanagingschedulesandtranscripts. LifeatHollisterHighSchoolisdefinedbystudent leadershipandastrongsenseofbelonging.The AssociatedStudentBody(ASB)consistsofover50 studentofficerswhoguidecampusactivitiesand promoteserviceandschoolpride.

InadditiontoASB,studentscanparticipateinmore than60clubsrelatedtoacademics,culture,service, arts,andleadership.Traditions,rallies,andcultural celebrationsenhancethesenseofcommunity,while programslikeUnifiedSportspromoterespect, inclusion,andsharedvaluesamongallstudents.

Our mission is to educate all students to their highest potential so they will have the greatest range of personal options upon graduation.

BuildingCharacterthrough Competition

Athleticsplayaprominentroleinstudent lifeatHollisterHighSchool.Thecampus boasts27varsityprogramsandatotalof 59teams,withnearly1,200students participating.Student-athletesoften achieveacademicperformancelevelsthat exceedcampusaverages,demonstratinga strongbalancebetweenathletic involvementandacademicresponsibility

Leadershipskillsarefosteredthrough initiativessuchastheHaybalerAthletics Captain’sCouncil.

Additionally,studentsafetyisprioritized throughrobustsportsmedicinesupportand well-regardedathletictrainingpractices. Theprogram’sdepthisreflectedinits consistentrecordofleaguechampionships.

SupportingWellnessthroughDailyCare

StudentwellnessatHollisterHighSchool startswithaccesstoreliablenutrition.The schooloffersfreebreakfast,lunch,and suppertoallstudents,availableatmultiple locationsacrosscampusandduring extendedservicehours.

Beginninginthe2025–26schoolyear,the programwillservenearly20,000meals eachweek.Thiscommitment acknowledgesthelinkbetweennutrition, studenthealth,consistentattendance,and theabilitytoremainfocusedandengaged throughouttheschoolday.

StewardshipthatLookstotheFuture

TheSanBenitoHighSchoolDistrict integratesenvironmentalresponsibility intoitscampusplanningandoperations. Forthethirdconsecutiveyear,thedistrict hasbeenawardedtheCaliforniaGreen RibbonSchoolshonor,highlightingits ongoingcommitmenttosustainability ratherthanjustshort-terminitiatives.

Keyfeatureslikesolarenergysystems,drought-resistantlandscaping, bioswales,andrecyclingprogramsinfluencedailyoperations.Through collaborationswithClimatecandPG&E,thedistrictanticipatesover $14millioninenergysavingsoverthenexttwodecades,aligning sustainabilitywithprudentfinancialmanagement.

PreparingforWhatComesNext

TheSanBenitoHighSchoolDistrictisplanningforlong-termgrowth asenrollmentisexpectedtoincrease.Toaccommodatethisrise,the districtismovingaheadwithplansforasecondcomprehensivehigh schoolinHollister,developedwithextensivecommunityinput.The phasedcampusdesignemphasizesfiscalresponsibilitywhileproviding flexiblelearningenvironments.
