GrammarSchoolstudents,staff,alumnae, andfriendsgatheredforaMassof Thanksgiving.Theoccasionmarked170yearssincea smallbutdeterminedjourneybeganin1855.Onthat day,SrFelicitasMurrayCJ,leftRathfarnham,Dublin, withfiveLoretoSistersandtravelledbystagecoachto Omagh.Theirpurposewassimplebutambitious:to openaLoretoschoolforgirls.
ThefirstclassroomsstoodonGeorge’sStreet.Intime, theschoolmovedtotheLoretogroundsonJames Street,wherethesistersestablishedbothaconventand thefoundationofwhatwouldbecomethepresent schoolsite.Today,theConventHouseandchapelstill standasremindersofthesisters’enduringinfluenceon educationinOmagh,acrossCountyTyrone,and beyond.
Thevisionthatguidedthoseearlyyearscontinuesto shapetheschooltoday.Inspiredbytheeducational idealsofMaryWardandtheworkofMotherFrances, TeresaBall,theschoolcarriesforwardatradition rootedinfaith,scholarship,andservice.Themission remainsclear: “Striving for Excellence, the Loreto Way,” guidedbythebeliefthatstudentsshould “seek truth, love what is good, and strive for excellence.”
