Recognising the heroic work of our past and present Armed Forces

The nation will salute men and women who form the Armed Forces community later this month. The event taking place on Saturday 30th June is a reminder of the heroic work conducted by current serving troops. Their families, veterans and cadets will also be recognised. Millions of people up and down the country will show their support and get involved with the day, whether that is following the event online, or throwing a party or local community event. You could have a picnic in the park, a themed BBQ or fete. Any support is worthwhile. Locally, support will be shown at HM Naval Base, in Portsmouth. There will also be a community event on Southsea Common on the day. Haslar Marina in Gosport will also have a Paddling Challenge too. Elsewhere in Hampshire, there will be unofficial events happening in community centres and at memorials. A majority include military parades, concerts, fun days and garden parties. The variety of how people commemorate the day is endless. Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Defence, expresses his gratitude on the Armed Forces Day website.

He says: â€œArmed Forces Day is a valuable opportunity to honour our troops who work so hard to keep us safe. Our servicemen and women are on hand every hour of every day to protect us from the threats we face, and I encourage people across the UK to come together and salute them for their tireless commitment.â€?

Overall, nearly 300 community events will take place throughout the UK as the nation thank its servicemen and women. Armed Forces Day is an annual event which takes place on the last Saturday of each June. Its intention is to be a celebration where the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on famous landmarks around the country, such as at civic centres, guildhalls and more. The day provides a morale boost for the troops and their families which is continually valued. Royalty, politicians, celebrities and others will show their support to the Armed Forces. The UK’s best kitesurfing event will return to Hampshire later this month. People will enjoy an exhilarating weekend at the 2018 Kitesurfing Armada Festival, from 22nd to 24th June. Taking place on the beautiful Hayling Island, there will be lots taking place around the arena to ensure festival-goers are entertained for every hour of the day. With live music across two stages, a marquee full of merchandise, a family zone, yoga, hot tubs, pro BMX displays, delicious food, craft stalls, DJ’s, parties, bars and more. Let’s not forget about plenty of kitesurfing too! Whether your intention is to kitesurf all day, or relax with a beer with friends, the festival organisers have you covered. This month’s Armada aims to build on the success of last year’s event, in which 6,000 people enjoyed all what was on offer. As the festival continues to develop since its launch six years ago, Kitesurfing Armada founder, Dan Charlish, says the event is a brilliant way to get people into the summer festival vibe. He said: “We are really looking forward to coming back to Hayling Island to deliver the festival once again. It was fantastic to see everyone enjoying all the live music, watching the kitesurfing and getting into

the summer festival vibe last year. This time around we have got even more great bands lined up. It should be a great weekend.” If kitesurfing isn’t your thing, then that’s okay; there is so much happening, so it is guaranteed to be an entertaining two days for all. The event organisers distribute all funds raised by the kitesurfing event itself, as well as other sponsorship schemes which will be offering activities on the weekend, to a range of brilliant youth and rescue charities – to date raising £180,000. There is no charge to attend the festival, but visitors must register online for their free tickets at: www.kitesurfingarmada.com. More information is available at their website.

VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT ANNUAL SUMMER SHOW Excitement is building for the Bedhampton Summer Show which takes place at the beginning of next month. However, none of it would be possible if it wasn’t for the ongoing support of volunteers in the lead up to the event and on the day itself. The afternoon, which is highly popular across the whole area, reaching communities from Portsmouth to Havant, and areas in between, will take place on Saturday 7th July. Chris Miller, who is the chairwoman of the show, says it’s wonderful to see thousands of people from across the county enjoying what is one of the largest community shows around.

In the lead up to the show, donations would be welcome to support with populating various stalls on the day. On the day itself people are invited to support with setting up the show, from erecting tents to ensuring everything is in the right place, any support would be valued. Chris continued: “Any help we receive is appreciated. It is all worthwhile as we see so many people enjoying themselves. She said: “We are expecting a couple of thousand to enjoy the afternoon which is full of fun activities for people of all ages. Everything that will happen all aims to raise money for charity. School celebrates its ongoing success after positive Ofsted rating The success of a recent Ofsted inspection at Purbrook Park School in Waterlooville has been welcomed by staff and students. The school, which has been rated ‘Good’ by the inspectors, has brought delight to the headteacher Paul Foxley. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our brilliant pupils, parents and staff for their tremendous support during our recent one-day inspection” he said.

“At Purbrook Park, we will all continue on our mission to create an outstanding school.” The report states pupils were unfailingly polite to those visiting, which is a credit to the school. WRITE YOUR WILL & SUPPORT THE ROWANS HOSPICE By writing your will this month you could be supporting The Rowans Hospice. The hospice’s annual Make-aWill Fortnight returns from 4th until 15th June 2018 and aims to ensure loved ones and important items are looked after. During Make-a-Will Fortnight, numerous organisations waive their fee for writing a ‘basic’ or ‘simple’ will to offer their services free of charge. Instead, those writing their will would make an equivalent donation to the Rowans Hospice. Julian Thomas, head of legacy and trust giving the hospice, which supports people with life-limiting conditions said one-third of people over 55-yearsold do not have a will. They said: “As a consequence, when they die, their property and assets such as savings may not be passed on to their loved ones as they might hope and expect. “We would always recommend people to take professional advice when drawing up their will, which is why we are delighted that 14 solicitors and will-writers are making their services available to help their community – and the hospice.” Further information on the work of the Rowans Hospice can be found at: www.rowanshospice.co.uk
