DONATE YOUR UNUSED FOOD THIS WINTER AND CHANGE LIVES WITH A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR… Winter can be a hard season for everyone, but it’s particularly difficult for many local families who struggle to make ends meet and have no idea where their next meal will come from. Here at The Directory Group, we want to help those in need, and we’re hoping you’ll join us in providing local families and food banks with food boxes this year. Last year we collected 150 reverse advent boxes, let’s see if we can top that this year! Just a few jars and tins from your cupboard will make a huge difference in providing a reverse advent calendar.
WHAT IS A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR? Unlike the chocolate advent calendar we see at Christmas, reverse advent calendars are designed to give something back to those less fortunate. Each day, you add a non-perishable food item to the box/basket until you have 24 items ready to donate to those less fortunate.
HOW TO TAKE PART? Taking part is simple. All you need is a sturdy box/basket, and then each day leading up to Christmas you add a new item. The idea is that you add 24 items, just like an advent calendar.
WHAT TO INCLUDE? When planning your box, think of staple foods that will feed a family. Items such as tinned and jarred food (including meat), pasta, rice, biscuits, UHT milk, baby formula, fruit juice, and anything else that has a long shelf life (no fresh goods please). Once your box is completed, drop off to our office at 1 Viceroy Court, Bedford Rd, Petersfield GU32 3LJ, or we can arrange to pick it up if you can’t get to us. Nearly 33 years after the Chernobyl nuclear explosion of April 1986, thousands of second-generation children and their parents living on contaminated lands of Belarus and Ukraine are implicated with severe health complications resulting from the deadly radioactive particles dispersed from the disaster. Many of those affected are prone to developing thyroid cancer, bone cancer, leukaemia, a number of other conditions and pass the risk of illness onto their children through DNA and breast feeding. There hasn’t been another catastrophe quite like Chernobyl, but that’s not to say that something can’t be done to help those living in the affected areas. A huge way you can help the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline is to volunteer as a host family for child victims, to give them a 4-week recuperative break away from Belarus and Ukraine. Living with a host family for just a few weeks has been proven to dramatically improve the health of children impacted by the disaster, and the parents of these children are hugely grateful for this initiative. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline have introduced a new project in Belarus called Project S.H.A.R.E (Support, Harmony, Alliance, Rejuvenation, Education) with a vision to bring together families with similar experiences and backgrounds. The project will be based in
Bobrovichi Village, an uncontaminated area untouched by radioactive fall out which hosts a disused school and ancillary buildings. There hasn’t been another catastrophe quite like Chernobyl, but that’s not to say that something can’t be done to help those living in the affected areas. This will be a fantastic alternative facility for those in Belarus and Ukraine who are not able to come to Britain for respite. When complete, many families affected by Chernobyl will be able to visit the new centre, and enjoy a much needed break especially those with children in palliative care. You can help with S.H.A.R.E in a multitude of ways. You can choose to give the gift of your time throughout the year and assist with carpentry, plumbing, first aid, or simply by putting the kettle on. You can also help by donating building materials (new or second hand) and giving away furnishings for the kitchen and bedroom areas. Turkey, stuffing & mozzarella parcels With so many get-togethers, parties and celebrations throughout December, it’s the perfect time to bring out a signature Christmas canapé that you can whip up quickly and wow your guests with. These turkey, stuffing and mozzarella parcels are the perfect festive finger food and won’t take hours to make, meaning you can get back to the party!

The Method...
Lay the turkey breasts onto a foiled baking tray and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle lightly with oil and cook for 30-minutes (or until cooked through). Once cooked, cut into bite-size squares and set aside. Make up your stuffing according to the packet details and set aside. Roll out your pasty into 10 x 10cm squares. You should be able to make 15 squares from your pastry.

Using a pastry brush, lightly spread mustard and cranberry sauce onto each square, and then add the turkey pieces, a slice of mozzarella and stuffing on top.

Fold the four corners the pastry square into the middle to create your parcel, and seal by brushing egg across the top.

Transfer the parcels onto a baking tray and cook for 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees until the pastry is golden and puffed.
7.
If you wish to freeze your parcels, simply put into a freezer bag before cooking, and take out to defrost the night before you wish to cook them.
Ingredients (to make 15 parcels) 6 large turkey breasts (or vegetarian alternative such as Quorn). 200g sage and onion stuffing (or vegetarian alternative such as mushroom stuffing). 250g of mozzarella 500g pre-made puff pastry (or roll your own) 3 tbsp of cranberry sauce 1 tbsp of English mustard 1 egg

Begin by making an espresso, either with a coffee machine or by adding 20ml of water to 5ml of instant coffee. Set this aside to cool slightly.
Shake for around 30 seconds, and then strain into a chilled martini glass. Sprinkle a handful of coffee beans and crushed ginger biscuits onto the drink and serve. If you’re not a lover of ginger but like the idea of an alternative espresso martini, why not swap the gingerbread syrup for vanilla, peppermint or orange? You’ll still get the lovely kick of coffee, but with a sweetness to suit your own preference!

For the mince mixture, add all the ingredients into a medium pot and bring to the boil and leave to cool at room temperature. Heat the oven to 180oC. To make the pastry, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle attachment, on high speed. With the motor running, add the egg yolk and mix until incorporated. Lower the speed to 1 and add the flour. Mix until dough just starts to clump, but don’t over work it. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board, and gently work to form a ball. Roll the dough out to 5mm thick, and cut into circles 8.5cm in diameter. Line a muffin tray with the pastry discs and fill with mince mixture. Use a 5cm diameter star cutter to cut out stars of the remaining pastry and place on the mince pies. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Leave to cool completely and dust with icing sugar to finish.

1. Keep your door open
It may sound obvious but having an opendoor policy enables staff to feel more comfortable approaching their manager. When staff feel they can talk to those in charge about concerns or uncertainty, there is less room for stress to build up, and everyone is on the same page.

Whether it’s bringing in sweet treats or sending an email to the whole company recognising the hard work of employees, acknowledging when somebody is doing a good job is a great way to keep up morale and inspire hard work to continue.

Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall? You will be now with our DIY stocking instructions Nothing quite beats a handmade Christmas decoration, especially when the whole family s gets involved and makes something special. These DIY stockings are easy to make, can be personalised to your individual style, and will look stunning hanging along the fireplace! Begin by drawing a stocking shape on a piece of cardboard. Depending on how large you want your final stocking to be, we recommend cutting a shape that measures roughly 20x50cm to make a medium-large finished product. Transfer the shape onto your fabric of choice and cut out twice. Stitch the two shapes together either by hand or using a sewing machine (remember to leave the top of the stocking open so you can put your presents inside). Once you have stitched the edges, take your faux fur and cut to the same width as your stocking, and either glue or sew to the top of the stocking. The final step is to personalise your stocking to your own preferences! If you’re a keen embroiderer, you could use embroidery thread to stitch on your own snowflakes, or alternatively you could use other pieces of fabric to create a festive pattern. To hang your stocking, simply attach a piece of twine or ribbon to the top.

A CENTURY ON, PETERSFIELD REMEMBERS Residents of Petersfield stood united in silence with millions around the country and beyond, in a tribute to those who gave their tomorrows for our today. This year’s Remembrance Sunday service in Petersfield was one of the biggest in the town’s history as it coincided with the centenary of Armistice Day. One-hundred years have passed since the guns finally fell silent, ending four years of futile battle. An assembly of uniformed organisations gathered at Swan Street car park at 9.45am while the Churcher’s
College band started playing in The Square at the same time.The parade started at Swan Street and was led by the band from the Training Ship Active as well as veterans, Combined Cadet Forces of Churcher’s College and The Petersfield School, the Air Training Corps, Petersfield police cadets and members of Scout and Guide organisations. After the outdoor service in The Square, the parade then proceeded to the War Memorial in the High Street where the Roll of Honour, listing all those from Petersfield who died in wars since 1914, was read out.

THE DIRECTORY GROUP CREATIVE TEAM ATTEND THE PETERSFIELD SCHOOL CAREERS FAIR It was fantastic to hear so many of them were interested in media, graphic design and journalism, and the team were able to offer information about their own backgrounds, and how each of them came to join The Directory Group.
On Thursday 1st November, The Petersfield School organised a careers fair for year 9-11 pupils who are in the process of considering their GCSE/A Levels and beginning to think about what they’d like to do as a career in the future. The event, held in the school sports hall, hosted 30 organisations connected to various careers, including The Directory Group, who were representing publishing and the different aspects of this field including graphic design, social media, journalism and photography. The creative team from The Directory Group consisting of graphic designers Zoe and Emma and content manager Lucy attended the event, ready to speak about their various roles and how they got there.
