We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. In 2018 the two lifeboats launched 76 times and went to deal with 78 incidents, saving 3 lives and assisting 48 people and 3 dogs. The larger Atlantic 85 Lifeboat launched 50 times and the smaller D-Class, mostly working in Chichester Harbour and the sandbanks off Wittering beach, launched 26 times. Over half of these rescues happened in the summer (JuneAugust) with 24% in the Winter/Spring and 20% in the Autumn/Winter. Weather conditions and offshore winds were features of the three most significant rescues. In February the sea and air temperatures caused a capsized kayaker to develop severe hypothermia with his core body temperature falling to 28 deg C but he survived after hospitalisation. In much warmer weather with strong offshore winds we dealt with two serious incidents involving small inflatables being blown out to sea. In one we saved a 4yr old child when the tether holding the little dinghy broke, and in another we saved a 14yr old non-swimmer when he capsized an inflatable kayak. Perhaps the New Year Resolution should be, to beware of small inflatable toys taken to sea in offshore winds and more generally to know what the wind and tide are doing. On another shout we didn’t find the unicorn we searched for and it turned up off the Nab Tower 24 hours later, but fortunately the ‘rider’ was safely ashore.

A number of beach huts on Hayling Island considered at severe risk of suffering storm damage were moved urgently during December. Havant Borough Council identified 40 beach huts at West Beach, Hayling in jeopardy of being destroyed by the sea. A new site was allocated following approval by Natural England and all beach hut owners were notified prior to the move. Councillor Gary Hughes, Cabinet lead for Contracts and Commercial Services said, “The decision to relocate the huts to another location was not taken lightly. This needed to be completed in order to save them from being destroyed during the winter months by severe storms and high tides. “Timber sea defences at West Beach were removed earlier this year prior to their collapse and a decision not to replace them

“There is currently no funding mechanism available from central government to maintain or reconstruct any coastal defences at West Beach, as there are no residential properties at risk from coastal flooding or erosion at this location. Any new defences would come at a considerable cost and would have to be funded from local council budgets. ”Local ward councillor and Leader of Havant Borough Council, Councillor Michael Wilson added “We have received some positive comments from owners about what we are doing and the care that is being taken to move the huts.” Norse South East is carrying out the moving of the huts on behalf of Havant Borough Council.
