Committee aims to improve Mayor-President La. economy through WISE plan meets with Tufts STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Donations exceeding $1 million from organizations like the Dow Chemical Company demonstrate the clear connection between private industries and higher education. Central to this link at the University is the Committee of 100, a private, non-profit organization comprising of Louisiana’s CEOs and university presidents. Similar to the goals outlined by the Workforce and Innovation for a Stronger Economy plan, or WISE, the Committee of 100’s goal is to address issues affecting economic growth. “Workforce is one of the
most critical areas for all of our members,” said Committee of 100 CEO Michael Olivier. The Committee of 100 plans to host several events around the state to initiate discussions about WISE, starting in August. Olivier said the events will help explain the tenets of WISE to the business community. According to these tenets, 80 percent of WISE funding supports workforce development. Universities in Louisiana have an opportunity to compete for this money, and the number of graduates a given institution provides in a high-demand field will affect the amount for which it qualifies. Under WISE regulations, universities will have to match 20
percent of private donations. Olivier said August’s event will take place in Baton Rouge and be available as a webinar. Representatives from technology corporations like AT&T and IBM will be present. Other host locations will include Monroe, Shreveport, Lake Charles and New Orleans. At the last public WISE council meeting, LSU President F. King Alexander said the Committee of 100’s fall events will give the administration an opportunity to “separate the contenders from the pretenders.”

Med school re-accredited

After 18 months of preparation, LSU Sheveport Health Sciences Center received a full eight-year reaccreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The LCME, formed in 1942 by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association, accredits over 150 institutions in the U.S. and Canada. Without accreditation, the medical school would lose its medical residency programs and federal funding, and graduates would be unable to get medical licensing in most states. LSUHSC Interim Dean John V. Marymont said he was relieved by the news. “To put this in context, full LCME accreditation for us is like crossing the finish line after a grueling race,” he said in a news release. “No one is guaranteed
re-accreditation, and some of the best medical schools in the nation have not been able to achieve what our school has just accomplished.” A group of LCME reviewers visited the campus in January and commended the school for its information technology program. They were impressed the school provided students with tablets for clinical rotations and laptops pre loaded with course work. According to Sally Croom, LSUHSC executive director of communications and public relations, the LCME cited three areas in which the medical school was non-compliant with standards. These areas were: a lack of a formal scientific method component in the first two years of the curriculum, no formal mechanism for assessing the potential risks to students who take elective programs in other areas of the country and the need for more student recreation and relaxation facilities. “We are very pleased with the
overall report and have already begun working on the three areas.”said Chancellor Robert A. Barish in a news release, In the 2014-2015 school year, LSUHSC will begin to offer an evidence-based research component throughout the medical school curriculum, called “Translating Research into Practice.” “Ultimately, our students will benefit from the ability to more effectively incorporate research into their treatment of patients,” Barish said regarding TRIP. The Dean’s office is working on creating a plan to evaluate outside electives before they are offered to students. The school’s officials are also seeking funds to improve the Student Union to accommodate more student activities.
After more than six months of waiting, East Baton Rouge MayorPresident Melvin “Kip” Holden fulfilled his promise to Student Government when he met with President Clay Tufts to organize plans and form a future relationship between the two offices. In his January State of the City address, Holden promoted an initiative to have regular meetings with student government presidents from various universities to learn the viewpoints of young leaders. This initiative, which had seemingly been ignored, became a reality in late May. Tufts said he realized it was going to take effort from both offices to get a formal meeting in place and decided at the end of May to reach out further through SG State Capitol Adviser Brad Guin. “The mayor was very cordial with setting up a time for he and I to meet,” Tufts said. “And from what we discussed, I feel that this is going to be a successful venture between the students and the city.” The meeting between Holden and Tufts addressed several important issues regarding public safety in critical areas such as Tigerland and college apartments, campus development projects focusing on lighting, and a project to better connect Baton Rouge to the campus. Tufts expressed concern for the safety of students in the Tigerland area, focusing on the increasing number of robberies. The mayor agreed and proposed the addition of police units patrolling in the area. Tufts said he and the mayor also discussed the addition of more
standard lighting on and around campus to produce a safer environment and a more uniformed look. “If you look at other campuses, most have the same design, look and type of lighting systems standard across their campus,” Tufts said, “One thing that the mayor and I discussed is the transition to LED standard lighting systems stretching a few miles off of campus.” Holden and Tufts agree the standard lighting of campus will create a more inviting atmosphere to the campus and signal to visitors from the interstate that they are approaching the University. Tufts said the proposed light fixtures would be especially beneficial to the dark areas created by the oak trees and behind the UREC and Sorority Row, which is where a large portion of robberies on campus occur. In the meeting, Holden also brought up the “Sister City Project.” The project is focused on creating a closer relationship between the Baton Rouge and the University. Holden believes a closer relationship among University departments and the city could reap multiple benefits. Tufts said the project is still in the preliminary stages, but he and the mayor agree the project would encourage young job seekers to remain in Baton Rouge through a closer connection downtown and would be a way to showcase the school for recruitment purposes. The details of the sister city project and advancement of other programs are set to be confronted further when Holden and Tufts meet at the end of July. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When Ray Nagin was elected mayor in 2002, there was real hope that he was a break from the city’s sleazy past. Three years later, with his city awash in foul water and rotting corpses, he became something of a national cult hero, raging against the slow, incompetent federal response to his crippled city’s plight. “Excuse my French — everybody in America — but I am pissed,” he shouted during a radio appearance three days after Hurricane Katrina swamped the Crescent City. In the end, though, Ray Nagin turned out to be a feckless mayor and, as a federal judge saw it, a lightweight criminal. “He started out as a rock star and he ended up as just another crass, corrupt politician,” said University of New Orleans Political Science Professor Ed Chervenak. Nagin, a 58-year-old former cable television manager, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for bribery, money

To longtime civil rights attorney Mary Howell, who watched the Democrat with cautious optimism during his 2002 campaign, Nagin seemed to promise at least something new. She, like so many others, was wrong.
“I think people were really just kind of worn out by the same old, same old. And he really appeared on the horizon as something that was new and fresh,” she said. “I think it would be fair to say, almost across the board, that for many people he was, his administration turned out to be a deep disappointment — and then a disaster.”
HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — The former public works inspector for a northern New Jersey town who admitted stealing $460,000 in quarters over two years has been spared a prison term. A judge instead sentenced Thomas Rica on Wednesday to five years of probation. Rica had worked in Ridgewood for 10 years before his arrest in January 2013. He pleaded guilty in March to four counts of theft as part of a plea deal that called for probation and restitution. Rica lost his job after his arrest for taking $500 in coins from the town’s parking meter collection room. Investigators later determined that he stole $460,000 overall.

Iran to expand nuclear program The Associated Press VIENNA (AP) — Iran said Wednesday it wants to greatly expand its uranium enrichment program despite Western fears that it could be used to make atomic arms. The position outlined by Iranian nuclear agency head Ali Akbar Salehi appeared to be the most detailed yet of what Tehran wants at its closed-door negotiations with six world powers. It also highlighted the huge obstacles in the way of an agreement
by a July 20 target date, since the world powers want Iran to reduce its enrichment program. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Marzieh Afkham said “substantial differences” remained. Depending on its level, enriched uranium can be used for reactor fuel or the core of a nuclear weapon. Iran says it does not want such arms. It went into nuclear talks last year with more than 9,000 centrifuges enriching uranium and about 10,000 on standby. The U.S.

But Salehi told Iran’s official IRNA news agency his country wants to expand the output of its enrichment program over the next eight years to a level that would need about 190,000 current centrifuges. Salehi said Iran wanted to use 8,000 advanced models to achieve that goal.

LSU baseball hitting coach Javi Sanchez has left the team to pursue a business career, according to a news release Wednesday. The 32-year-old plans to retire from coaching after his
seven-year stint with the Tigers. Sanchez coached LSU to three College World Series appearances and the 2009 national championship. “My daily focus was always to uphold the championship tradition at LSU and to be a piece of this legacy,” Sanchez said in the news release. “Our players have been a joy to recruit and work with throughout the years. They provided my existence as a coach, and I will always value the imprint they
have left on my life personally and professionally.” The Tigers struck out the fewest times of any Southeastern Conference team and ranked in the top five in the league in 10 offensive categories last season. LSU was second in the SEC in slugging percentage and third in batting average and RBIs. The Tigers — under Sanchez’s guidance — led the 2013 conference in hits, doubles and total bases. Sanchez coached outfielder
Raph Rhymes, who led the country with a .431 batting average and garnered First Team All-America recognition. Sanchez began his coaching career after spending four years in the Minnesota Twins’ farm system. He played at Notre Dame under current LSU coach Paul Mainieri.

WHERE’S PETE? Nonexsistent Pete Maravich statue sparks debate

On his official letterhead on July 3, Gov. Bobby Jindal openly asked the University why there is not a statue of “Pistol” Pete Maravich on campus — a question Pistol Pete fans have been raising since a statue of Shaquille O’Neal was erected in 2011. Shaq, a National Player of the Year for LSU in 1991 and four time NBA champion, has all the credentials that deserve a tribute, but many have argued that the 900-pound statue shouldn’t be the only statue of an LSU athlete on campus. Danny Brown, author of “Shooting the Pistol,” covered Maravich throughout his career at LSU and said the effect that Pistol made had a profound effect on the University and those who were able to see him play. “I love Shaq to death, and I think he is a remarkable player,” said Brown. “But without Pete, there would have not been a Shaq. Pete, without a doubt, put LSU basketball on the map.” Maravich, who is still the NCAA Division 1 leading scorer with 3,667 points, was named the National Player of the Year in 1970 and averaged 44.2 points per game in an era without a three-point line or freshmen on the varsity squad. “In Pete’s freshman year, the team used to play in the AgCenter, which would hold a little over 9,000 spectators,” said Brown. “At the time, the freshman team would play before the varsity. There would be approximately 5,000 people in attendance for a freshman game, but by the second half of the varsity game it would appear to be closer to 500.” The rise in attendance and MARAVICH STATUE, see page 8

Some coaching hires can be a headache. Others just seem to fall into place. That was the case for Tristan Venables, who was hired last month as assistant coach for the LSU women’s tennis team. Venables spent the last two seasons as a volunteer coach with the Georgia men’s tennis team, and coach Julia Sell called the hire one of the easiest she’s made. “There were a lot of people after him,” Sell said. “The summertime is when jobs open and everybody’s circulating. He was in a volunteer position, so he was looking to get in, and he wants to be a head coach. But once I started speaking with him and our mutual friends, he was on board pretty quickly.” Sell and Venables hadn’t met prior to the hiring, but they had similar expectations and goals for the program. “I had the opportunity to work with two great coaches in [volunteer coach Michael Sell] and Julia Sell,” Venables said. “I just knew it was a great opportunity as well. The program is in a great spot to move up and do some successful things to be up there with the rest of the LSU sports.” Venables helped guide Georgia to the Southeastern Conference regular season championship and a No. 9 final ranking in 2014. He worked under legendary coach Manuel Diaz, whose teams have won four national championships in the last 15 years. The Perth, Australia, native coached for 13 years at Wembley Downs Tennis Club and was captain of the National League Finals team at the 2012 Australian Open. “Tristan’s already been in a system where he knows what it takes to be the best, to produce players that go on to be successful after college, and that’s what we’ve set up here,” Sell said. “As far as his mentality, to me it was kind of a perfect fit for what we’re doing here.” The Lady Tigers greatly improved last season, going 14-14 and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Olivier Sarkozy and one of the Olsen Twins — look, I can’t tell them apart and neither can you. One of the tiny, bite-sized Olsen twins is caught in a bad romance with former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s older, uglier brother Olivier. He looks like her dad, and it’s weird. His daughter is literally taller than Olsen.
To combat this summer’s heat and humidity, the Elizabethan Gallery and the Associated Women in the Arts will provide an artistic experience with its “All Wet” exhibit. Multiple styles of paintings will be featured but all revolve around the theme of water and wetness. Many of the pieces were created by members of the Associated Women in the Arts and can be purchased at the event. Programs and exhibits are held through the year to showcase the skills of the AWA members, like the “All Wet” event. Liz Walker, owner of the Elizabethan Gallery and member of the AWA, describes the event as a “gem” for fans of art and art collectors. “There are a lot of different pieces in this exhibit, and we hope that they all go to good homes,” Walker said. The artists will be in attendance tonight to greet guests and answer any questions about their pieces. Walker said what makes this exhibit stand out are the artists and their connection to the pieces. “Many of the works are by local artists,” Walker said. “There’s something about supporting the community you’re from that makes you feel so amazing.” The Associated Women in the Arts began in 1980 as a group of professional female artists who wanted to display their knowledge and variety of visual art forms. The AWA grew in numbers as it began to create opportunities for its members to display their pieces and hold a forum for the artists to talk about their work. The pieces at “All Wet” range in price, but the Gallery offers layaway and buy-up plans for those who wish to have art but don’t have the full finances. “We never want to prevent someone from acquiring art. Working with our customers creates a relationship with them,” Walker said. The Elizabethan Gallery will open the “All Wet” exhibit tonight with a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will run until August 16.

Summer Fest highlights Shakespeare and families TOMMY ROMANACH · Staff Writer
The Swine Palace began its run of two shows for its annual Summer Fest event with a performance of “Romeo and Juliet” Tuesday night at the Reilly Theater. This is the third year the department has hosted Summer Fest, with shows playing at the Swine Palace and the Reilly Theater. “Romeo and Juliet” runs until July 13, while the second show, “The School for Lies,” runs from July 22 to July 27. Associate Managing Director at the Swine Palace Karli Henderson said the goal is to continue to produce shows year-round. “Historically, the Swine Palace has onand-off produced the work in the summer, but this is our effort to continuously produce throughout the year,” Henderson said. “While these shows are produced more minimally than other shows, we still found it important to give a theater offering during the summer”
“The School For Lies,” written by David Ives, was adapted from Molière’s “The Misanthrope,” but the department mostly produces Shakespeare plays. Other than “Romeo and Juliet,” the Summer Fest has featured two Shakespeare plays in each of the last two years. Henderson said Baton Rouge does not have many other places showing Shakespeare, and Summer Fest plays an important role in supplying the city with classic works. “History has shown over the last few years that people in Baton Rouge seem to be interested in classical work and want a little more of it,” Henderson said. “And this really is the only Shakespeare game in town. I don’t think anybody else is producing Shakespeare in Baton Rouge.” Henderson said the plays are also structured toward family friendliness and said she
brings her own children to see “Romeo and Juliet.” Summer Fest achieves the department’s goal of keeping productions running throughout the year. Henderson said the productions are important not only to the community, but for the students who are getting real-world acting experience. She said the main goal of Summer Fest is to bring older works of theatre to the Baton Rouge residents. “The goal is to bring these classic pieces of theatre alive for our Baton Rouge community,” Henderson said. “It’s to get those pieces out there and to the people.”

The women’s game is definitely hard-hitting and very physical, there’s just a little

NBA turning head coaches into afterthoughts MALLETTE ME TELL YA Joe Mallette Contributing Writer The NBA coaching carousel over the last few seasons has been spinning out of control. The life of an NBA coach has become more like that of a professional gambler — hoping to land in a city with a roster or salary cap space that can keep their spot the table. The days when a coach was given the time to build and shape his team are gone. In today’s NBA, the only coaches that
are safe are the two conference champions. In any sport, the best teams that win the most championships all have one thing in common: quality leadership. Eight of the last 10 NBA champions have had coaches who were at least in their fifth year. Erik Spoelstra was only with the Miami Heat as a head coach for four seasons when they won the 2012 Finals, but Spoelstra had been an assistant on the team since 1997. Spoelstra — along with Gregg Popovich, Phil Jackson and Pat Riley — had the time to build and grow their teams for at least five
years before taking home a banner to hang in the rafters. The other two championships came to Rick Carlisle and Doc Rivers, who were in their third and fourth seasons with their teams, respectively, and who had senior leadership on the court in Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Garnett. Since 1990, 16 of 26 championship trophies belong to two coaches: Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. In the last 26 seasons, the majority of the titles have been split between three teams: the Bulls, the Lakers and the Spurs. Each team also had two things in common: an iconic superstar
player and a hall-of-fame coach who commanded their star’s respect. Phil Jackson led Michael Jordan to six titles with the Bulls and helped Kobe Bryant win five with the Lakers, becoming the molder of two of the greatest players in the sport. Gregg Popovich has a relationship with Tim Duncan that may be that closest player-coach pairing the NBA has ever seen. The last three seasons have all seen at least one coach lose his job after taking his team to the playoffs. The Warriors, Nets (twice), Hawks, Celtics, Clippers, Grizzlies, Nuggets and Magic have all
separated themselves from coaches that had made it into the top half of the league. With the exception of the Celtics, all of these teams were left out of the playoffs, often before they picked up these coaches. In an age where superstar players are causing teams to leverage millions of dollars in cap space for a chance to court them, head coaches are an afterthought.
