MITCHELL’S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP DREAMS HINGE UPON CONSISTENCY Kernels eye state title in wide-open Class 11AA season should end in the DakotaDome, playing for a state championship. Class 11AA has run through Pierre the last three seasons, but there has been significant turnover throughout the class this season and Mitchell has designs on prying the state championship trophy from the grip of the Governors. “Our goal is to work and compete for a state championship,” MHS head coach Kent VanOverschelde said. “We graduated some critical players, but we’ve also grown and developed. Gaining that experience from a year
ago, you see a level of certainty that wasn’t apparent last year. They’ve worked hard to not only be accountable, but hold each other accountable.” The Kernels have their own holes to fill, including the losses of quarterback Austin Kerr and all-state cornerback Peyton Nash. Still, they have some dangerous threats on offense and defense to take aim at the upper echelon of Class 11AA. Defensively, linebacker Joe VanOverschelde is back after leading the team with 96 tackles in his first varsity season as a sophomore, while class-

mate Tucker Vilhauer was second on the team with 77 tackles and two interceptions from his safety position. Parker Phillips returns at running back, having 1,107 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, while 6-foot-6 wide receiver Ryley Johansen flashed late in the season with 349 yards and three touchdowns on 11 receptions. All eyes will be on Vilhauer, though, as he steps in as Mitchell’s third different starting quarterback in as many seasons, looking to replace Kerr’s 739 passing yards and 571 rushing yards.

After falling to Class 11A opponents Sioux Falls Christian and Dell Rapids last year, Mitchell looks to vanquish both teams — with Spearfish in between — to get off to a 4-0 start before traveling to Yankton on Sept. 25. “We need to find that consistency,” VanOverschelde said. “As much as we worked to improve and get better, we didn’t make those advances during the season. I think there’s some good football teams out there. We look at this schedule as very competitive and we need to work to be competitive.” Mitchell opened the season at Douglas on Aug. 28.

By Nick Sabato Mitchell republic Walking off the football field for the final time last November, the Mitchell High School underclassmen were sour. A season filled with close contests had quickly gone south, as the Kernels dropped three of their last four games, including a 57-7 loss to eventual state champion Pierre in the Class 11AA semifinals. Opponents scored at least 50 points in each of those losses, dropping Mitchell to 5-6 for the year. The Kernels vividly remember those losses and they believe this
“We have to open things up and not get caught in a rut of not trying to squeeze that round nut into a square hole,” VanOverschelde said. “There are multiple guys that have proven to be weapons around the perimeter. Tucker Vilhauer has the ability to open the offense up, but we have to recognize when to make those adjustments.” Mitchell’s state championship hopes may be determined early in the season, as it hopes to pick up momentum in the early portion of the schedule. The Kernels have not won back-to-back games since October 2017 and were not able to establish consistency the last two seasons.

DEFENDING A STATE TITLE Kernel girls welcome target on their back as reigning state champions By Jeremy Karll Mitchell republic All eyes will be on the Mitchell High School girls tennis team as it goes for back-to-back state championships. It played the first South Dakota High School Activities Association sporting event of the year at Hitchcock Park, which sparked a successful start to the year for the Kernels. They expect every team’s best shot after winning last year’s Class A state championship. “There’s going to be a target on our back, but we’re going to wear that target with pride,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. “We have a lot of girls coming back from last
year and there’s a lot of talent on this team. I think they’re up for this challenge, and we’re going to expect all of our opponent’s best effort.” The Kernels have a couple of new faces in a lineup that features one senior, but it’s still an experienced group. Kiersten Bathke will be the senior leader for a team that returns three state champions and features plenty of competitive challenge matches in practice that helped Moller settle on a lineup. Atlanta Stahle will take over Flight 1 from the graduated Kelsey Dahme, who she won a doubles state championship with last season. Olivia Huber,
who won a singles and doubles state championship, will be Flight 2, and her doubles partner from last year, Amber Moller, will be Flight 3. Julia Platt’s first varsity season will start on Flight 4, Bathke will play on Flight 5 and seventh-grader Megan Mastel is Flight 6. The No. 1 doubles pair is Stahle/Moller, while Huber/Bathke will play No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles is Platt and freshman Delaney Degen. “These girls were beating up on each other a little bit,” Moller said. “Some of the best competition they’re going to see all year, and some of the most pressure-packed competition they’re going

ence play. Whether it’s the solid offseason by Platt or the potential of Mastel, he envisions its younger players winning matches alongside its experienced and proven bunch. When asked about the expectations for this group, it came down to
one word — Repeat. “I think if you ask the girls that, they like that feeling,” Moller said. “... This is a really deep team. I think we’re going to put together solid tennis all the way around this year. We’re just going to play one match at a time.”

ATHLETIC KERNEL CHEER RAISES ROUTINE DIFFICULTY By Jeremy Karll Mitchell republic Even after a program-high ninth-place finish at the state competitive cheer competition last year, Mitchell High School coach Alisha Lockhart believes her team is even better this year. The Mitchell cheer team has continued to add athletes and will up the difficulty in its routines this season. Even as it has gotten a late start to practicing its routine, Lockhart believes its athleticism will help it continue its ascension up the cheer ranks. “We are athletic. We
just keep getting more and more athletes coming to the program every year,” Lockhart said. “We got high level back-hand, back-tuck, standing tumbling from about nine out of 17 athletes right now.” The athletic background of many of Mitchell’s cheerleaders help them transition to the sport, as the focus turns to adding pep by being “perky and bouncy and smiling at the judges.” It helps them work through a challenging stunt or tumbling pass, per Lockhart. It’s a matter of learning the routine and not pushing themselves to learn

new moves too fast early in the season after a late start. “If we’re not hitting stunts, or we’re missing a tumbling pass here or there, those are all things we can work through,” Lockhart said. “The one thing we can bring — no matter how late in the game we got our routine — is our energy, our spirit and our cheerleader.” The Kernels’ lone home competition is Oct. 10 at the Corn Palace, which Lockhart identifies as a final tune-up before the Eastern South Dakota Conference competition on Oct. 15 in Pierre. The state competi-

“Out of eight years that I’ve been here, it’s nice to see the progression that we’ve been doing through the program,” Verhey said. As much as anything, Verhey hopes the Kernels can make it through the season safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It dances in the state competition Oct. 23-24 at Rapid City Stevens. “I just hope to see them come together,” Verhey said. “And to see the dances on the floor, and get the first critiques from the judges to see what we need to do better.”

MHS GIRLS SOCCER EYES THE NEXT STEP Kernels hosted first playoff match last season Mitchell republic The Mitchell High School girls soccer team has taken never-before-seen leaps for the program in the past two seasons. Now, with a heavy senior presence, the Kernels are using that as motivation to take the next step in the postseason. After qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time in 2018, Mitchell’s follow-up performance was even better. It went 8-5-1 and hosted its first playoff match ever, though fell 3-1 to Sioux Falls Roosevelt. With a roster of 11 seniors, the Kernels haven’t become complacent with their recent success, rather use it as motivation. “They really enjoyed last season with the success we had last year and previously. I think that is moti-

Now we’re in that position, and I think that’s a huge motivator
for them.” For as much of Mitchell’s success will have to do with staying healthy during a 13-game slate, it also has emphasized playing faster and smarter during the offseason. That includes simply having a
better understanding of positioning on the field and their roles. “If we can continue building each game and making ourselves better and working together as a unit, that will be the real key,” Lemon said. “If we
can do that and be able to apply the pressure to the other teams, rather than having it applied to us.” Mitchell has the talent to put pressure on teams. Senior goalie Caroline Titze will play at the University of Sioux Falls
next year, and has recorded 602 saves during her first three seasons. Mia Mullenmeister enters high school coming off a program-record 19 goals scored last season. The gaudy numbers jump out, but the veteran depth is a big reason Lemon believes his team can have a competitive season. Marianna Novak and Macy Kempf provide a strong presence in the middle, and defensively, Brooke Brewster has taken charge. All three players are seniors. “The seniors are an important part of this group,” Lemon said. “They’re the ones that have gone through. They’ve been through the battles as young players, so they kind of know what that’s like.” Lemon expects his team to not be part of many one-sided matches that favor the opposition. “We have a lot of experience coming back,” Lemon said. “So I think we have our sights on a really solid season to be competitive in each and every game.”

Kernels feature 13 underclassmen in 2020 By Nick Sabato Mitchell republic Compete to win. That is the mantra that Mitchell High School boys soccer coach Ken Novak will relay to his team through the course of the season, and if they do, he believes they can improve upon last season’s 2-11-1 record. The Kernels have a unique blend of youth and experience this year, with 10 players that saw game action returning, but they only have five seniors and one junior on the squad. That should set up opportunities for new talent to step into important roles. “Winning is sometimes so difficult to achieve for many reasons,” said Novak, who is entering his sixth year as MHS coach. “If we finish the season — and even a game — and we feel like we put things together, I think we are going to get in the ‘W’ column and we’re going to have sense
that we’re building and going in the right direction.” One of the players not returning is last year’s leading scorer Daniel Durta, a foreign exchange student that led Mitchell with six goals last season. Durta’s firepower must be replaced and Novak believes it will happen through a variety of different players. Jamison Wear returns at midfield and the sophomore not only has the ability to create opportunities for his teammates, but he also has the leg to finish on his own. Senior Skylar Kurtenbach will factor in as an attacking midfielder, as will eighth-grader Easton Neuendorf. He saw time as a reserve last season and Novak spoke highly of his soccer instincts and his ability to find holes in a defense. Sophomore Kaileb Hubbard and freshman E.J. Novak both have strong legs at midfield that
should add some striking ability for the Kernels. “We do have that power to switch the ball,” Novak said. “We can switch that ball and cross fields pretty quickly. That’s to our advantage, especially if we can attack from the flank, so we can spread (opponents) out in the attack third.” Mitchell must also replace Trevor Lambert in goal and will do so with a pair of players, including sophomore Logan Oehlerking, who is tabbed as the new starter between the pipes and will be backed up by freshman Caden Olegario. An experienced back line will be helpful, with senior Levi Gebhard returning at centerback, as well as junior Wyatt Haibeck at fullback. Senior Cameron Gauger returns as a defensive midfielder. While the Kernels are young in a variety of areas, they have a roster that features five freshmen, three eighth-graders and

COMPETITION PUSHING KERNEL VOLLEYBALL Returners, transfers jockeying for playing time
By Ryan Deal Mitchell republic New faces abound for the Mitchell High School volleyball team. The Kernels return just two starters, but they received two all-state transfers that will bolster the lineup. Mitchell graduated seven seniors off last season’s 4-23 team. With a brand new roster, Mitchell coach Deb Thill said there’s plenty of learning and evaluating strengths and weaknesses of the group. But it also means healthy competition for spots.
“The competition level is high in our gym right now because everybody obviously wants a starting role,” Thill said. “Pretty much every position is up for grabs. So that’s been why our level of play has been so high and we have some very talented kids that have developed as they are getting older.” The two returning starters are senior setter Katy Sebert (498 assists) and junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Sarah Sebert (389 digs). Ethan’s Cameryn Logan and Wagner’s Elizabeth Tyler transferred to Mitchell in the offseason.
Logan, a senior hitter, was a second-team all-stater last season. She recorded 381 kills, 318 digs, 68 aces, 56 blocks and 32 assists for the Rustlers. Tyler, a sophomore hitter, was an allstate honorable mention selection last year. She logged 350 digs, 213 kills and 57 aces for the Red Raiders. Tyler’s mother and long-time Wagner head coach, Amy, joined the Mitchell school district in the offseason. Elizabeth Tyler and Logan both bring versatility to Mitchell’s lineup, said Thill. “Cameryn is the type of player that she could play any posi-
tion for us on the floor,” Thill said. “She’s really athletic and she’s bringing in that power game for us. Lizzie could play defense. She can play offense. She’s also a versatile player for us. They’ve known people from our team for years and years. They played club together. So it was an easy transfer for both of those two.” As always, the Kernels will hang their hat on ball control. In addition to Sarah Sebert’s 389 digs, Katy Sebert logged 230 digs. “We have some very good serve-receive kids,” Thill said.
“We have some great servers and if we can keep our setter Katy in system, of course then that just tends to be successful on the offensive end.” On the offensive end, Logan, Tyler, Kazlyn Schulz, Kaspen Alm, Kaitlyn Christensen, Taylor Haring and Mariyha Turner project to produce points. Thill expects Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Washington to be among the contenders in the state. Watertown, Aberdeen Central and Huron are among the Eastern South Dakota Conference favorites, said Thill.

“She plays soccer and then she runs on her own time, which is really admirable because she’s getting after both of them and she gives both sports 110 percent,” Buschbach said. “Regardless of what’s going on, she’s always practicing and she’s super dedicated. The Kernels bring back a mix of both young and old runners committed to the program. “They are looking really strong,” Buschbach said. “So it’s pretty exciting to approach the season knowing that these kids are stronger than they have been in years past.” While the roster is loaded with underclassmen, the veteran runners set the bar for the program. On the boys side, it starts with senior Lucas Moller. He was Mitchell’s best finisher at state last season in

IMPROVED KERNEL SOFTBALL RAISES EXPECTATIONS Mitchell to rely on experienced pitching during 2020 campaign By Jeremy Karll Mitchell republic The Mitchell High School softball team won’t be short on experience this season. Mitchell finished 3-27 last season, but hopes a 10-9 upset win over Harrisburg in the state tournament can spark better results in 2020. The Kernels also swept Sioux Falls Washington in the beginning of the year. Kernel coach Craig Krcil has higher expectations for this group, which could show as well as anywhere in the pitching circle. “We had a tough year last year. We won a couple of games against Sioux Falls Washington, and we did go into the state tournament last year and knock off Harrisburg, which was a surprise,” Krcil said. “The team kept getting better and better last year. If we can stay healthy and keep everybody strong, I think we’ll probably look at a .500 to plus season.” The Kernels have flashed its speed during the first couple of weeks of practice, and while Krcil has seen improvement at the plate, he emphasized his pitching staff as the team’s backbone. It returns its
top-two pitchers, Keirstyn Krcil and Jacey Linke, who combined to pitch 117.1 of 129 possible innings last year. They combined to strike out 41 batters. “I think we’ve got a pretty solid pitching staff,” Krcil said. “We have a couple of girls who have been pitching now for the last five years.” The pitching staff — and Kernels as a team — will be tested out of the gate. After opening the season at home against Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Mitchell travels to Sioux Falls Washington, Aberdeen and Rapid City in August. It won’t play at home again until Sept. 1 when it hosts Sioux Falls Lincoln. It will give it a chance to show its speed, improved hitting and the strong defense up the middle that Krcil touts. He points to Keirstyn Krcil, who led the team with 30 hits, Kassidy Overweg and Ally Barlean as three players who the Kernels expect to guide it at the plate. Barlean and Overweg had 15 and 14 hits, respectively, while Krcil hit all three of MItchell’s home runs. Mean-
while, Kathleen Nash (28) and Camryn Krogman (24, including a team-high seven doubles) both had at least 20 hits, as well. With an experienced bunch back, the Kernels are taking the season game-by-game. “All we need to do is improve every game,” Krcil said. “That’s all I expect. Let’s get better every game.”

positives, including a tight-knit unit that has experience playing together. “It’s good and bad — they all get to play and have playing time,” Van Zee said. “But if one of them is sick or something happens, we’re going to be in trouble. … It’s going to be tough, but we’ll see what we can do this season and hopefully we can get more girls in next year.” The Golden Eagles will rely heavily on their defense this season, displaying a knack to rally to the ball and come up with timely digs, led by senior Erica Thompson and junior Keely O’Neill.

By Nick Sabato Mitchell republic Mitchell Christian has a small roster, but it is looking for big results on the volleyball court this season. Despite eight rostered players for the roster for the 2020 season, the Golden Eagles are looking to build on the gradual improvement from last season. Since the program’s last winning season in 2015, Mitchell Christian has increased its win total in each of the last three seasons, including a 7-13 mark last fall. The Golden Eagles lost one starter from last year’s squad, which gives the team hope they can not only match their 2019 win total, but tack on a few more this season. “A lot of these girls have been playing together for a long time,” Mitchell Christian head coach Cara Van Zee said. “Just to have that trust together and team bond, that really helped them last year. I hope to continue to see that this season.” Turning Mitchell Christian into a consistent power has been marred simply by a lack of students in the school, according to Van Zee. The school has an average daily membership of 33.79, ranking 162nd out 180 high schools in South Dakota. Even more troubling, is at least two grades in the school currently without girls. As Mitchell Christian attempts to attract more students, Van Zee must work with the players she has. While a small roster presents obvious challenges, she also believes that it also brings

CUBS RETURN EXPERIENCED YOUTH, EYE CLASS A GIRLS STATE TITLE CHAMBERLAIN — The Chamberlain girls cross country team has hovered near the top of Class A standings in recent years at the state meet and it is not likely to change this season. The Cubs placed third last season and they return each member that competed in the state meet this year. In fact, none of those runners will be a senior this season, including sophomore Ally Hough and freshman Kinsey Evans, both of whom placed in the top15 a year ago. Armed with a plethora of young runners that are continuing to mature, Chamberlain is not only eyeing another top-three finish at the state meet, but to push West River powers Custer and Hill City for a state championship. “We’d like to believe that, it’s our girls’ goal (to win a state title),” Chamberlain first-year coach Holly Evans said. “... We changed our schedule a little bit, so we’ll see Custer and Hill City in the middle of September. It’ll be nice to see a month before state if that’s a realistic goal.” Hough has posted back-to-back top10 finishes, including a fifth-place finish a year
ago in 19 minutes, 30.35 seconds and is aiming to contend for an individual state championship this season, although the top three finishers — Lennox’s Ali Bainbridge, Custer’s Abby Cutler and Lead-Deadwood’s Sara Jones — all return. Evans, meanwhile, took 13th in 20:05.21 and is looking to move into the top-10 this season. But it will be up to the remaining runners to push the Cubs over the top. Sophomore Ella Phillips is coming off a 40th-place finish, while freshman Angelina Lopez took 80th and junior Samanth Peppel is looking to improve upon placing 97th. “Ella Phillips moved up quite a bit from her eighth grade year to her freshman year, so I’m hoping to see that again,” Evans said. “... Depth is what we need. We need those fourth and fifth runners to step it up.” Ethan/Parkston’s Lindsey Roth finished eighth in the Class A meet last year as a sophomore, running to a time of 19 minutes, 39 seconds. Winner Area’s Sidda Schuyler placed fourth in 2018, but an injury kept her from competing last season. On the boys side,

Chamberlain’s Dominic Santiago had a disappointing ending to his sophomore season. He was shooting for a topfive finish at state, but an injury during practice was aggravated during the race and he finished 68th and is not looking to rectify that this season. Santiago’s teammate Declan Tveit took 36th as a freshman last season. Winner’s Kade Watson was seventh last season in 16:52.53, while Ethan/ Parkston’s Riley Endres was 35th.

The Cubs and Trojans both return their top golfers after each teams earned top-10 finishes last season. Parkston posted a fourth-place finish last season, finishing just behind third-place Madison by five strokes. Sioux Falls Christian and Tea Area took first and sec-
ond, respectively. Quinn Borman headlines Parkston’s returners. The junior tied for 10th place last season with a twoday total of 168, including a 78 on the opening day. Payton Koehn, who finished 16th last season as an eighth-grader, returns after shooting a 171 at state last season. Junior Matt Ehler took 59th last season. Chamberlain captured ninth place last season and returns two
golfers that finished in the top20. Senior Drayton Priebe carded 171 and tied for 16th place. Senior Cameron Caldwell shot an 86 on both days for a 172 and finished in 20th place. Freshmen Dakota Munger (56th place) and Sandler Wiekamp (75th) also return from Chamberlain’s ninth-place team. This year’s Class A state golf tournament is Oct. 5-6 in Hot Springs.

PUSHING FOR THE POSTSEASON
DWU football making adjustments during shortened offseason
It’s a balance of excitement and caution for the Dakota Wesleyan University football team. It feels the urgency of a Sept. 12 season opener at Hastings (Neb.) approaching but knows it has to change how it prepares during an already unconventional season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tigers didn’t have any players opt-out of the season, which saw their practices start on Aug. 15. DWU is trying to limit exposure at much as possible to start practices. It changed its meeting schedule, allowing one group to go to the field to stretch while another group finishes a meeting. “Hopefully if we don’t have any symptoms or positive cases, then we can kind of assume that our guys are pretty good,” DWU coach Ross Cimpl said. “If we can do that, then we can gradually increase what we’re doing in practice, in terms of running plays.” Cimpl acknowledged the sense of urgency built from a lack of fall camp and shorter offseason, especially considering new offensive coordinator Steve Schneider has been with the team for three practices. Schneider last was the head coach at Peru State (Neb.) in 2019, but will take over play-calling duties for the Tigers this season. He and quarterbacks coach/pass-game coordinator Lance Burrell will work together in developing a new passing attack centered around base concepts. It’s not a complete overhaul from when DWU ranked fifth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in passing yards per game (191.6) and passing touch-

A lot of different things we can do, and there’s a lot of positives to that,” Cimpl said. “But we just felt like with the time frame and turnaround we’re going to have, we’re going to have to narrow that focus a little bit and really just vary maybe those base concepts that we’re doing so guys can learn it a little bit quicker, be able to execute it a little bit quicker.” It’s one of the many adjustments Cimpl has needed to make. The coaching staff is figuring out how many modifications need to be made to the playbook. Still, it’s much easier to make adjustments on the field, rather than trying to explain something over a summer Zoom meeting. “Having some Zoom meetings with players throughout the summer trying to introduce them to things that are going to happen, but you never really understand it until you get here,” Cimpl said. “We’re in it now, and that’s good. That’s a positive
that we’re actually seeing how it’s going, but we also have to be available to make adjustments and changes.” On the field, the Tigers are allowed three hours of physical activity per day, but with the hope of avoiding injuries and gradually improving their conditioning level after an extended time off, they’re only practicing for half of the allowed time. The shorter practice times have Cimpl preaching to his players about playing with the right level of intensity, and the desire to have fewer mistakes on assignments prior to Week 1. But being able to practice and prepare for a scheduled season isn’t something every football player — at any level — can say. And DWU knows that. “There’s always energy the first practice, but obviously everything is different right now,” Cimpl said. “For our guys to be able to No. 1 still have opportunity to play games, I think our guys understood that. From a physical standpoint, we’re taking things a little slower than we probably normally would.”

DWU hopes athleticism outweighs youth in bid for GPAC volleyball tourney By Nick Sabato Mitchell republic New faces will not slow down the progression of the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team this fall. That is how head coach Lindsay Wilber feels after reaching the 20-win plateau in 2019, but losing six key contributors from the squad, including All-American outside hitter Rebecca Frick. She also feels the Tigers are in position to qualify for the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament after narrowly missing out two years in a row. Armed with what Wilber calls the most athletic team she has assembled during her time at DWU, the GPAC tournament is once again the goal when it opens the season in a triangular against Valley City State and Mayville State on Sept. 5 in Valley City, North Dakota. “(The GPAC tournament) is always right there,” Wilber said. “... That’s always our next step and the girls know that. This year is going to be odd with who is playing this week and next because of COVID. It’s going to be interesting.” DWU had four players play in all 117 sets a season ago, but only defensive specialist Danielle Burns returns this season. Burns finished third on the team with 360 digs as a freshman, behind seniors Rebecca Frick and Mallory Cooper. Of course, replacing Frick is the big challenge after she finished her college career second on the school’s all-time list in kills (1,750) and digs (1,465). Mariah Gloe, who appeared in 98 sets last season as a freshman, will step into the starting lineup fulltime after notching 90 kills last year. Jadie DeLange is in her second year with the program after transferring from Division II Black Hills State University, and posted 224 kills in 99 sets last season, while Chaydon Metzger tallied and Mitchell native Mackenzie Miller will battle for the starting job at right-side hitter. third on the DWU all-time list in assists (3,289), must also be replaced and that will be tasked to sophomore Madeline Else. Northern State transfer Hanna Reiff is also expected to play a significant role as a defensive specialist. A pair of 6-foot freshmen step into the starting lineup at middle blocker in Ady Dwight and McKenzie Buisker. Dwight, a Langford native, was praised by Wilber as the most athletic player she has ever coached. “I’ve been really pleasantly surprised how they’ve meshed together already,” Wilber said. “It’s so fun to watch. We only have two seniors on the team and one junior, so we’re super young, but super athletic. It’s going to be fun to watch their progression, because they’ll get better every match.” If the Tigers are hoping to reach the GPAC tournament for the first time in school history, they will have to avoid skids like the three-game losing streak to end 2019 and grab wins in five-set matches. DWU dropped three five-set matches last season, which Wilber pointed to as a contributing factor for missing the postseason. “We should have been in the tournament last year,” Wilber said. “It’s very realistic.”
