The upgrades to Cub Field include the installation of a turf infield and walk-up areas, concession stands, backstops, bleachers, dugouts, batting cages and box seating along the first base line. The Salem Cubs, of the Cornbelt League, play their home games at the venue. “We feel it’s a great venue for fans,” said Cheeseman, a Salem baseball committee member. “The seating and the atmosphere is very fanfriendly. I think it’s a really good place to enjoy watching baseball.”

They rallied once again to help determine South Dakota’s best small-town baseball fields. On July 21, The Mitchell Republic asked readers to vote for their favorite South Dakota small-town ballparks. More than 1,200 votes were submitted in less than a week and Salem’s baseball field was the leading vote getter, followed by fields in Winner, Parkston, Flandreau and Menno. Here’s a closer look at the top five fields, as voted by amateur baseball fans.

It’s paid dividends as Salem has hosted multiple tournaments across various levels, while a host of people are responsible for assisting with the field. “We’ve got a good group of parents,” Cheeseman said. “All the way from Legion-aged kids all the way to 6 and under. It’s not one person. It’s been a group at all levels and we continue to support it.” Cheeseman said the city has aided in the upgrade projects, but a majority of the money has been raised from sponsors, tournaments and concession stand sales. “We feel we’ve got a really good thing and it looks like it’s going to be that way for a long time,” Cheeseman said. “The system is in place and we’ve got a really good group of particularly parents at all levels. … Salem supports its baseball pretty good.” Cub Field is 320-feet to right and left field and 365-feet to center field. In 2018, the press box was named in honor of Bob McCormick, a longtime baseball statistician and PA announcer who passed away in 2016.
Leahy Bowl
WINNER – Winner’s Leahy Bowl oozes with history. The venue, which was built in 1948, was the home to the Basin League’s Winner Pheasants in the 1950s and 1960s. It was named after Winner High School graduate and former Notre Dame
player/coach Frank Leahy. Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer used to toe the rubber at Leahy Bowl. “There’s been a lot of really good teams that have played there and a lot of really good players,” said Austin Richey, who currently plays for Winner and is treasurer of the baseball association. “Everybody used to host a bunch of players, kind of the college-type players. They would help them out on the farm and that was a way they still got to play baseball.” It’s now home to the Winner/Colome Pheasants of the Sunshine League and the Winner/Colome Royals American Legion and high school teams. At Leahy Bowl, the baseball field sits at the bottom of a hill and spectators can watch games from their vehicles looking down from the top of the hill. It’s 325-feet down the lines and 375-feet to center field. The field’s original 80-foot light towers are still in place. But the Winner Baseball Association has continued to make improvements in recent years. In recent years, it has upgraded bleachers, the press box and plans on adding a new scoreboard in the future. It doesn’t go unnoticed either. The venue has hosted multiple state tournaments and Richey takes note of the positive feedback from fans across the state. “It’s a meeting point halfway for Rapid City and Sioux Falls schools and a lot of our area towns really like to come to Leahy Bowl,” Richey said. “It’s kind of nice where everybody can sit up around the bowl there and not have to be 001603339r1

The Pond
PARKSTON – Mudcats, Bullheads and Rock Bass have all called The Pond their home. At one time, Parkston’s field was home to the three Sunshine League baseball teams. However, just the Mudcats are the lone team still in existence. Parkston’s high school and Legion teams also play their home games at The Pond, which is a popular spot for area’s baseball fans and a regular host for the District 5B amateur baseball tournament. “They like the field and they like coming out having a good time and watching baseball,” Parkston manager Dave Roth said. It’s also ripe with history. The grandstand was moved by horses in 1938 when the facility was originally built and the park hosted the 1968 state amateur baseball tournament. The field dimensions are 320-feet down the lines and 352-feet to center field. In 2014, the park went under significant upgrades. The renovations included tilling, grading, and sodding the in-field, removal of fence and bracing of backstop/grandstand, new backstop netting and concrete sidewalk path to replace rock through grandstand. “It’s a nice park,” Roth said. “We try to keep it up well and everybody likes coming out.”

Flandreau City Park
FLANDREAU – Located on the banks of the Big Sioux River, Flandreau City Park is home to camping facilities, playground and picnic areas. It’s also home to the Flandreau Cardinals, of the Cornbelt League. The park is one mile east of Flandreau and the Big Sioux River sits a few foul balls away from home plate, giving it a unique feel. “We are located right along the Big Sioux River and we have some big mature trees surrounding the entire field,” Flandreau player/ manager Bret Severtson said. “It is just outside of town. So it’s kind of a little more intimate and private setting, too.” The field’s dimensions are 330-feet down the lines and 360-feet to center field. The field features an old wooden grandstand behind home plate and underground dugouts. There are youth fields also on site and Severtson credits Randy Wilts for maintaining the parks during the summer. Flandreau has discussed adding turf in hopes to continue hosting tournaments in the future. “We have a real good community following,” Severtson said. “We have quite a few businesses around town that will do some dollar foul ball nights, $5 foul ball nights just to get a ton of kids down there. … It’s real fun. When we have bigger games and nice nights, we will have fans up and down the lines and grandstands and the bleachers by the dugouts as well.”

Liebl said the coronavirus impacted the field in a positive way. The home attendance was higher this season and the community was allowed to help with improvements. “We’ve had community groups that actually helped paint the field and change a lot of things,” Liebl said. “It’s been a real good meeting place – especially hosting districts.” The field recently broke the District 6B gate-
money record. The previous record of more than $9,100 was set in Menno in 2005.
The best of the rest
Canova missed the top five spot and claimed sixth in the fan voting. Canova’s field recently installed turf on the pitcher’s mound, home plate, walkways from dugouts to home plate, in front of the dugouts, coaches boxes and around the backstop. The project cost roughly $25,000. The rest of the top-10 included Redfield, Elk Point, Tabor and Chamberlain.

MENNO – Menno’s Lily Pad added something new this season, and it was in honor of a former Mad Frog. Former Menno amateur baseball player Jarud Lang died in January and the team built the Jarud Lang Home Run Porch, which sits behind the right field fence. “It’s very special,” Menno player/manager Ryan Liebl said. “We’ve gotten to enjoy it during districts as players, too. It’s been pretty cool.” It adds to the outfield scene at Menno, which usually has a line of vehicles surrounding the outfield fence on game days. “What’s best about it – especially being a small town – is you can come park anywhere,” Liebl said. “You can sit in the back of your truck anywhere on the field and it’s just a nice little layout for the community.”

State amateur baseball capsules A look at all 32 teams in the Class B tournament By Mitchell Republic It is once again time for 12 action-packed days of South Dakota amateur baseball. The Class B state amateur tournament begins on Wednesday, with 32 teams looking to run the table to Championship Sunday on Aug. 16 at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. A perfect bracket is unlikely, but fans can bank on burgers, beer, raffle tickets and unpredictable baseball will provide the next crop of contenders for the Class B crown. Here is a team-by-team look at the entire 32-team field:

ALEXANDRIA ANGELS Alexandria is back to defend its state amateur championship and is in search of its fourth title in five years. The Angels went 11-2 in Sunshine League, marking the fifth straight year they have won at least a share of the league title and the fourth time they have won outright since 2016. They also captured their sixth District 5B championship since 2012. Alexandria has reached the state final six times in the last seven years, with a total of four championships.

Tyson Gau has led the Angels at the plate and on the mound, racking up a team-high 19 RBIs and a .361 average, while also going 7-0 in eight appearances, with 65 strikeouts and a 0.76 ERA. Peyton Smith is second on the team with 15 RBIs and a team-leading .391 average. John Greicar has 13 RBIs, while Jordan Gau is hitting .328 heading into the state tournament. The 2018 state champions are a part of the state tournament field for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons after deep runs the last two years. Canova nearly returned to the finals a year ago before running out of steam against Garretson in the semifinals. The Gang reached the finals of the District 4B tournament, but lost to Flandreau for the second straight year. Garrett Gassman led the team with a .407 average, while also driving in 15 runs. Justin Miller drove in a team-best 18 runs and scored 18 runs, while hitting .383. Jared Miller also had 15 RBIs and hit .328 this season. Derek Miller struck out 55 batters in 52 2/3 innings, while Trey Krier amassed a 1.32 ERA in 41 innings of work on the mound. The Gang plays Mount Vernon at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
CLARK TRADERS
A mainstay in the state tournament, Clark returns for the 15th time in the last 16 seasons, including the last three. The Traders advanced to the quarterfinals a year ago before falling to Garretson. They reached the District 1B championship game this season, dropping a 7-4 contest to Milbank following a lategame surge. Kyle Braun and Zach Toben have driven in 18 runs apiece, while hitting .403 and .407, respectively. Brent Griffith hit .340 and drove in a team-high 19 runs, including three home runs. Bryce DesLauriers and Tyler Brinka also both drove in 15 runs during the regular season. Toben has also logged 37 2/3 innings on the mount, striking out 31 batters, while Griffith has a 3.42 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. The Traders play Four Corners at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

CLEAR LAKE SLOUGH SHARKS Clear Lake is making its third consecutive appearance in the state tournament. The Slough Sharks dropped a 10-0 contest to Menno in the first round of last year’s tournament. They dropped their first game of the District 1B tournament to Lake Norden this season, but reeled off a pair of wins to clinch a spot in the tournament. Clear Lake beat Hamlin 11-1 and then took down Castlewood 6-5, scoring three runs in the eighth inning, thanks to a game-winning two-run single by Harrison Wookey. The Slough Sharks play Hartford/Humboldt at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
CROFTON (NEB.) BLUEJAYS Crofton will make its 12th straight state tournament appearance this season, a streak that goes back to 2009. The Bluejays have reached the semifinals five times, with three trips to the finals from 2010 to 2012, including capturing the 2011 state championship. Crofton took home the District 6B tournament championship with a 6-2 win over Wynot (Neb.), 6-2. Tyler Zimmerman drove in two runs and Ben Hegge fanned eight batters in the win. The win was preceded by a 4-2 win over Freeman and a 10-5 victory against Menno during the tournament. The Bluejays play Salem at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Jake Rausch and Jamison Klein combined to allow one run on five hits in the win to go back to the state tournament for the first time since 2017. Irene had been to the tournament 13 of the previous 14 years. The Cardinals play Redfield at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks are back in the state tournament for the third time since 2011, with the last appearance coming in 2018. The Gamecocks topped Madison 9-6 in a District 5B contest to clinch a spot in the tournament, winning back-to-back games after losing an opening round game to Salem. Chad Morrison leads the team with 10 RBIs and has hit .306 this season, while Joe Hanisch has a .370 average and nine RBIs. Drew DeMers leads the team with a .371 average and has scored 10 runs this season. Cole Barthel has a 2.68 ERA in 37 innings on the mound and Tyler Renken has a 3.81 ERA in 26 innings of work. The Gamecocks play Clear Lake at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Kimball/White Lake capped the regular season by sharing the Pony Hills League title with a record of 10-2. The Nationals claimed the No. 1 seed in the District 3B tournament, but championship dreams were dispatched after a 3-1 loss to Four Corners in their first game. KWL rebounded with a 17-2 win over South Central to clinch a berth in the state tournament. This year’s state tournament appearance is the fourth in the last six years and second consecutive for the Nationals. Last year, KWL fell to Tabor in the first round, 6-5, in 13 innings, despite a 12-strikeout, 221-pitch performance by Zak Wallner. The Nationals play Larchwood (Iowa) at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

They clinched a trip to the tournament in a 13-hit performance to beat Menno 7-5 in the District 6B tournament. MADISON BRONCOS Madison punched a ticket to the state tournament on its third attempt in the District 4B tournament. The Broncos dropped tight games to Dell Rapids PBR and the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks with a trip to the state tournament at stake, but finally broke through with a resounding 10-0 win over Lennox in their final attempt. It will be Madison’s fourth consecutive berth in the state tournament and its 11th in 13 seasons. Heith Williams hit .476 in the district tournament, driving in six runs, while Greg Biagi hit .346 with five RBIs, including a pair of home runs. Jacob Giles pitched 25 1/3 innings with a 1.42 ERA in three appearances. The Broncos play Groton at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Wynot reached the finals of the District 6B championship game, falling to Crofton (Neb.) in a 6-2 contest. Crofton rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score five unanswered runs to take the title from Wynot, which won the championship in 2019. The Expos play Elk Point at 1 p.m. Sunday.

State tournament COVID-19 precautions left to fans to uphold Social distancing measures encouraged, but not required

recautions to prevent COVID-19 at Cadwell Park will be evident, but not allencompassing. The South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association State Tournament is returning Aug. 5-16 in Mitchell through a global pandemic, which means precautions will be in place in an attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but don’t expect it to hinder the experience that so many have come to enjoy. Expect signs and announcements encouraging social distancing throughout each game of the tournament, but don’t anticipate workers demanding 6 feet of separation in the bleachers. Hand sanitizing stations will be prevalent and face masks are encouraged but not required. The pleas for social distancing practices and precautions appear to be an even exchange for the chance to host the state amateur tournament with minimal restrictions in the eyes of Jim Johnston. “We’re trying to make it as safe as possible without infringing on anybody’s rights,” said Johnston, the state tournament chairman. “Everybody is responsible for what they do in regards to social distancing and protecting themselves. We’re going to encourage people to do that, but hopefully they’ll take responsibility to keep themselves safe during the tournament.” Throughout the amateur baseball season, Johnston has noticed a willingness for team spectators to sit together and he anticipates much of the same for the state tournament in Mitchell. The hope, however, is for fans to be respectful of another fan’s desire for social distancing when seated in the grandstand behind home plate or in

Water jugs, which are traditionally provided by Avera Sports Medicine, will not be in each dugout this year and teams will be tasked to bring their own. The number of entrants in restrooms at a given time will also be limited and there will be signs designating proper distancing in concession stand lines. Tournament workers will not be required to wear masks, but 50-50 ticket takers will be wearing masks when they stroll through the grandstand during games. The SDABA encouraged players to stand outside the dugout prior to the season, and even though dugouts at Cadwell Park are 40 feet long, it will still be encouraged. “With pick-up players and Legion players, you can have close quarters (in the dugout),” Johnston said. “Players will be allowed to stand outside the dugout, so everybody on the team can practice social distancing. That will create a ground rule problem that we’ll have to resolve. In the past, only the on-deck hitters were allowed outside the dugout.”

the bleachers along the baselines at Cadwell Park. “Every fan deserves the right for social distancing,” Johnston said. “If someone sits down next to them and they want them to move a little further away, I hope everybody will be a good fan and heed that advice. Every fan has the right to expect that they’ll be safe and everybody around them is practicing social distancing. I think everyone will respect their right to do that to protect their family. I don’t see it being a big problem.” In addition to the SDABA guidelines implemented prior to the season – which include social distancing in dugouts and during mound visits, wearing batting gloves and not sharing equipment – there will also be some minor precautionary measures at Cadwell Park. Tournament staff and volunteers will receive temperature checks upon entering the park, and while fans are not required, they can request to have their temperature checked at tournament headquarters. There will also be eight hand sanitizer dispensers around the park, as well as in restrooms and dugouts.

Angels prep for another state tourney run Alexandria brings deep pitching staff, timely hitting to Cadwell Park

LEXANDRIA – Alexandria is rolling along. Its annual goals are being checked off, but for the reigning Class B champion, the final one is still five wins away. The four-time state champion since 2013 clinched a state tournament berth with a 13-5 win over Parkston in the District 5B tournament, and then won a second straight District 5B title in an 8-1 win over Platte. Those were goals one and two. Goal No. 3 starts when the Angels (15-2) take on Lesterville at 1 p.m. Thursday during the Class B state tournament at Cadwell Park. “Not to be overconfident, but (making the state tournament) is the goal every single year,” Alexandria manager and catcher Chris Marek said. “... And obviously Goal No. 3 is to continue competing and try to win a state championship.” Whether the Angels kick off this decade with another addition to its dynasty largely rests on its pitching staff tasked with potentially pitching five games in 11 days. Even without longtime ace Trever Vermeulen, Alexandria is still oozing quality depth. Canova’s 12-5 win marks the only team to score more than five runs against the Angels, and that outing can be masked by how early in the season the June 3 game took place and the 11 games it allowed three or fewer runs since (five shutouts). They are giving up 2.6 runs per game this season. Tyson Gau (0.76 ERA / 65 strikeouts) has a sub1.00 ERA in 59 innings and Ethan Davis (1.23 / 48) acts as the team’s No. 2 pitcher in 44 innings, even if his numbers suggest a second ace. Jed Schmidt has pitched 15 four-hit shutout innings, while Jordan Gau (3.21) and Craig Lasley (3.60) each have tossed double-digit innings. No matter who the Angels put on the mound, the mixture of pitching talent and sound defensive play has forced swing and misses for Sunshine League bats all year. “I think every top-end team success starts with their pitching staff in the state tournament,” Marek said. “Having quality arms that can get

We’re a team that is good offensively and strong defensively, but we’re built around quality pitching depth.” The Angels have supported its pitchers with 6.9 runs per contest and added Corsica/ Stickney power bat Luke Bamberg for their state tournament run. He hit .304 with a .484 on-base percentage and four home runs with the Horned Frogs this year. It’s an addition that should make the Angels even more dangerous with runners in scoring position, an area that Marek feels has improved this year. While the team’s .280 batting average and .390 on-base percentage is down from last year (.303/.393), the timely hits have gone up. Peyton Smith (27), Tyson Gau (26) and Jordan Gau (20) all have 20-plus hits, as Tyson Gau leads the team with three home runs. “It’s more consistency with hits with runners in scoring position and hits with two outs,” Marek said. “By the numbers, we’re actually no better this year than we have been in the past, but I would say from an assessment myself, it’s timely hitting.” Hitting better with runners in scoring position,

The Renner Monarchs were nearly untouchable in the state tournament during the 2010s, but in the new decade, it split into two teams. Renner won six straight Class A state championships from 2013-2018 before the Sioux Falls Brewers ended the run last season. Some of its players joined the Class B 38 and over Bullets, leaving an opening for the Brewers to repeat or another Class A squad to emerge. The Bullets’ success has carried over to Class B, as it defeated Larchwood (Iowa), 9-8, in the District 7B championship game. Renner is 13-5 overall and 9-0 against Class B teams this year.
