Father and son both born prematurely 33 years apart, cared for by the same nurse By Meryl Kornfield The Washington Post The first few days of a premature baby’s life can be especially hellish for a new mom. But Renata Freydin is resting easier knowing one nurse at a neonatal intensive care unit is there to watch over her new son, Zayne Caldwell, who was born 10 weeks early in January. That’s because the nurse, Lissa McGowan, has a connection to the family. She was
there at the Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, 33 years ago when Zayne’s father and Freydin’s fiance, David Caldwell, was born — early just like his son, the Courier News first reported. “The past 2 weeks have been filled with worries and uncertainty but we can breathe easy knowing my lil nugget’s nurse is the same one that helped the man I love when he was in the same situation,” Freydin posted on Facebook. Freydin isn’t the first mother to be comforted by McGowan’s presence in the NICU. Three decades ago, Caldwell’s late mother, Ida Bell, who called McGowan “nurse Lissa,” became so
attached to her son’s caretaker that she included a picture of the smiling nurse and bundled baby in a photo album, Freydin told The Washington Post. Three decades later, the parents spotted the snapshot. Caldwell pulled his old photo album out of storage after his son was born to see whether they looked similar. But it was Freydin who spotted the other likeness, the nurse. “I saw a picture of her and instantly knew it was her, but he didn’t believe me,” she said. To erase Caldwell’s doubts, the couple brought the picture to the hospital, where three other nurses confirmed it was McGowan. Another photo was taken in the NICU: This time, it was

The term “gaslighting,” or manipulating someone by making them question their own reality, has experienced a resurgence in the past several years because of our current political climate. While there are some political images in the new music video, the scathing lyrics appear to be deeply personal, and about an unnamed unrepentant liar. Given that lead singer Natalie Maines said this album is “the most personal and autobiographical” the group has ever been, and she had a lot to process after her divorce, well ... you can make your own guesses about the subject of the song. Maines, who officially split from actor Adrian Pasdar last year after a publicized legal battle, kicks it off: “We moved to California and we followed your dreams/I believed in the promises you made to me/Swore that night till death do us part/But you lie-lie-
lie-lie-lied,” she sings. “Hollywood welcomed you with open doors/No matter what they gave you, you still wanted more.” The upbeat anthem goes on to eviscerate this person (“Give you all my money, you’ll gladly walk away” ... “Gaslighter, denier, doing anything to get your ass farther ... repeating all of the mistakes of your father”) while acknowledging that their actions were devastating (“I’m broken, you’re still sorry, and there’s still no apology.”) In a news release, the band described the video (directed by Seanne Farmer) as “a nod to the female empowerment movement” which “depicts the militant strength of women through the centuries and the unbreakable bond they create through any of life’s unforeseen circumstances.” The no-holds-barred lyrics should be familiar to listeners: “Gaslighter” is the first music released from the group
since May 2006, when they dropped their extremely candid album “Taking the Long Way,” a response to the controversy that engulfed their careers. In 2003, Maines criticized President George W. Bush on the eve of the Iraq War, telling a London concert crowd, “We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.” The fallout — the blacklisting from country radio stations, lost sponsorship deals, death threats — still looms in country music today, as artists are warned about speaking up about political opinions lest they get “Dixie Chicked.” But even after the backlash, they were largely beloved by fans and the music industry. The multi-platinum selling “Taking the Long Way” won album of the year at the 2007 Grammy Awards, while the fiery single “Not Ready to Make Nice” won song and record of the year. How music helps us get in touch with emotion By Lela Nargi The Washington Post Imagine your favorite song. Now think about the way it makes you feel. Chances are, you didn’t have to think too hard to identify that feeling. And chances are, if you asked a friend how that same song made them feel, they would have the same response. Alan Cowen wanted to know whether people who lived in a place far from our own would respond that way, too. “Emotions are construed by language and culture,” he points out. He thought it was possible that music Americans consider angry would be considered scary by people who live somewhere else. Cowen is a researcher at
the University of California at Berkeley, where he looks at how people express emotions with their face and voice. He organized a study of more than 2,500 people in the United States and China. He and his fellow researchers played them many kinds of music, including heavy metal, rock, jazz and classical. They found that everyone had pretty much the same emotional response to the music. For example, “The Star-Spangled Banner” made people feel pride, while Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” made them feel joyful. But even though people in China and the United States felt angry from listening to a particular song, says Cowen,
“They differed in whether they thought that experience was good or bad.” Past research by other scientists has shown that people across cultures share as many as six basic emotions: fear, anger, surprise, disgust, sadness and happiness. But Cowen’s study identified 13 emotional responses or feelings “felt through the language of music”: amusement, joy, desire, beautiful, relaxation, sadness, dreaminess, triumph, anxiety, scariness, annoyance, defiance and feeling pumped up. Perhaps coolest of all, the researchers created an interactive map of those musical emotions. You can play with it online to see whether your responses match up with
those of the people in the study. Teachers around the world are using this map in their classrooms. It’s helping students find new words to describe their emotions. “They’re going from saying, ‘This is good music’ to ‘This is defiant music,’ “ Cowen says. This ability could help them control their own emotions or better understand other people’s feelings. Cowen says that people who are depressed often “look at facial expressions and see more negativity.” Having different words to describe emotions could be a tool to help them reexamine what they think they see. Humans aren’t the only

animals that respond to music. Music lessens anxiety in shelter dogs and helps cows produce more milk. So why are humans the only ones who make it? Cowen says that there are parallels to music in other creatures’ noises. A low growl from a tiger, for example, “advertises its body size and strength,” while human parents across all cultures “soothe infants with higherpitched sounds that indicate comfort.” Music, though, is what Cowen calls “cheesecake” for the human brain. It’s something nice we didn’t need for evolution but which “completely transforms how we experience life,” with at least 13 emotions.

Coronavirus: This is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands... By Amy Joyce The Washington Post We have by now all heard the best way to prevent catching the coronavirus is by making sure to properly wash hands. Easy, right? Well, for small children, and their parents, handwashing is not exactly the easiest task. It has to be taught.
It’s especially important now, of course, because even though children don’t seem to be getting hit hard by this virus yet, they are major germ carriers. So teaching them to wash their hands helps not only them but everyone who comes in contact with them. “A lot of us don’t think about it,” says Elizabeth
Meade, a pediatrician and national spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics based in Seattle. It’s so second nature to so many of us, parents often forget it’s a skill they need to teach. “The most important thing is to start early with kids, when they’re toddlers,” Meade says. So how do we teach these amazingly wonderful and absolutely germ-filled little people how (and why) to wash their hands regularly? We make it fun, and let them know this is a regular part of our lives: Look! Parents do it too! It’s important to “make it a habit, a standard,” Meade says. Explain that we always wash before we eat,

after using the bathroom and after playing with animals, for example. It’s not easy to get those little uncoordinated hands to scrub all those germs away (coronavirus and others). The best thing to use is warm water, which has been proven to kill germs more than cold. Soap up, and sing either “Happy Birthday” or “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” for 20 seconds, at least, while rubbing your hands together, covering every surface with suds. You can even make a game out of it, she suggests, to see who can get the most soap bubbles on their hands and between their fingers. Using fun soap, such as those with characters on them, or even soaps that change color when
used long enough, will help encourage kids. “We want to teach them to wash all parts of their hands,” Meade says. (I remember watching my son put soap on his palm, rinse it off, then proclaim “Done!” when he was small.) Washing all parts of their hands means the fronts, the backs, between the fingers, their nails and even their wrists. The other very important thing is to not make this seem like a chore. Have fun, sing along, talk to them, Meade says, about being “germ-busting superheroes” and explain that’s how they can save the world. Sometimes, they are so small, it’s actually uncomfortable to reach the sink and wash hands, so make sure they have a step stool
so they can reach the faucets and water. Hand sanitizer also works, but the CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water above all else. Sanitizer can be used when soap and water aren’t available, but kids still have to get to all the hidden germy spots, so much of the lessons here still apply. And on that note: This is a good time to remember how many germs can live under nails, so keep them trimmed and clean, too. Meade admits that yes, even a pediatrician like herself has to work on this at home. She has a 5-year-old stepson who is “quite reluctant to handwash.” Time to pull out the superhero cape and your best version of “Happy Birthday.”

Airlines offer flexible travel options to adapt to spread of coronavirus By Drew Jones The Washington Post As the coronavirus outbreak has spread, global travel has become a topic of concern. U.S. airlines have responded by suspending travel to various destinations through the spring, and many large conferences and gatherings around the world have been canceled altogether amid a steady rise in new infections. To help quell travelers’ worries, airlines have begun changing their policies to create flexibility in bookings.
If you’re planning — or have already scheduled — a trip for the near future, here are your options. American Airlines American announced that it will waive change fees up to two weeks in advance for travelers who have purchased tickets for flights between March 1 and March 16. That’s on top of the alreadyin-place no change fee for trips that have been scheduled from Feb. 24 to April 24 for Italy, South Korea, Hong Kong, Wuhan and the
rest of mainland China. JetBlue JetBlue will suspend change and cancellation fees for new flights booked Feb. 27 through March 11. The policy runs through June 1 in an effort to anticipate the spread of the coronavirus in the event that it expands into one of JetBlue’s travel areas. “While authorities have not issued any travel restrictions to the locations we fly, we want to give our customers some peace of mind that we are ready to support them should
the situation change,” said the airline’s president and chief operating officer, Joanna Geraghty, in a statement. Alaska Airlines Alaska is offering a “peace of mind” waiver for travelers who have purchased tickets from Feb. 27 through March 12. Alaska will allow customers to bank any travel costs associated with canceled tickets as long as the future trip is completed by New Year’s Eve. Alaska will also step up its cleaning procedures for its planes and has issued
new sanitary policies for flyers that include cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer and cutting refills on single-use beverage cups. Delta Air Lines In addition to suspending travel from the United States to Shanghai and Beijing, Delta is giving customers the option to make a onetime change without any fees for those whose plans included Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and all locations in Italy, including such popular locations as Bologna, Milan, Rome, Turin and
Venice, through April 30. United Airlines After expanding flight suspensions to Asia, United is allowing refunds for flights, even nonrefundable tickets, purchased for Wuhan, China, from Jan. 22 through March 29. For travel to mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Northern Italy through June 30, United is waiving the change fee and any difference in fare for the same cities as the original ticket.
Authorities advise health workers about facial hair and masks to prevent coronavirus spread By Lateshia Beachum The Washington Post Mutton chops, chin curtains and the ever-popular beard have to be shaved off the fighters against coronavirus in the United Kingdom, the Press Association reported. Leaders of the University Hospital Southampton National Health Service Foundation Trust sent an organization-wide email about shaving beards so masks can properly fit on their faces, according to the PA. Derek Sandeman,
medical director of the trust, passed along the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for which styles of facial hair are acceptable. Staffers sporting the daring Dali look or choosing to look more rugged with long stubble have been requested to opt for more acceptable styles, such as a soul patch or “walrus,” as noted by the guide. Toxins can bypass facial hair and enter a person’s respiratory system. “While human hair appears to be very thin to the naked eye, hair is much larger in size than the particles inhaled,” according to the CDC. “Facial hair is just not dense enough and the individual hairs are too large to capture par-
ticles like an air filter does.” Even day-two fuzz can decrease the amount of protection one receives from a mask, the agency warned. Hospitals in the United States could be facing a possible mask shortage partly because of federal rules that require them to be tossed out after each use, The Washington Post reported.

Tesla on the hunt for new location Company looks to open Cybertruck plant in central US By Dana Hull Bloomberg Elon Musk announced Tesla is scouting locations to build its indevelopment Cybertruck in the U.S., likely triggering a state-by-state competition similar to one he set off six years ago. Tesla will add a factory to produce both the electric pickup and the Model Y crossover for customers on the East Coast, the chief executive officer tweeted Tuesday. He didn’t elaborate on which states Tesla is considering beyond saying it will be somewhere in the cen-
tral U.S. By publicizing Tesla’s plans to construct a factory for the truck, slated for production late next year, Musk, 48, is repeating a strategy used in 2014 to score a $1.3 billion incentive package from Nevada. The state lured the company’s massive battery factory there after Musk held a bake-off in which Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas were the finalists that came up short. Musk unveiled the Cybertruck in November and pitched it as a radically different option from the highly lucrative pickups produced by
Ford General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. A botched demo in which Tesla’s design chief cracked supposedly shatter-proof glass generated enormous buzz and prompted the company to sell T-shirts featuring the broken windows. Tesla shares were little changed at $645.38 as of 9:35 a.m. Wednesday in New York. The stock is up 54 percent this year. Government incentives will play a role in Tesla’s decision-making on a plant location, along with logistics costs, access to big, talented workforces, and quality of life, Musk told the Wall Street Journal in an email. TechCrunch reported the company is in talks with officials in Nashville, Tennessee, citing a source familiar
with the discussions. The battle between states will play out as U.S. President Donald Trump, who’s vowed to revive the American auto industry, looks likely to face off against Joe Biden, the vice president in the Obama administration, which backed General Motors and Chrysler through their 2009 bankruptcies. Trump praised Musk in an interview with CNBC in January, calling the South Africa-born CEO “one of our great geniuses” and predicting he would build “a very big plant in the United States.” Tesla recently completed construction of its newest plant in China and started delivering locally assembled Model 3 sedans to consumers in January. It’s also planning a factory near Berlin.
