Get it to go: takeout a short walk from campus SHARON LI
S
Buzz staff writer
ometimes students don’t have time to make dinner or sit down to eat at a restaurant. Luckily, campus offers a variety of food – from tacos to sushi to burgers – that can be ordered and taken to go. All of these locations are in Campustown, so if you want to take your food home, it will still be hot when you get there!
Maize
Maize is a popular spot for Mexican cuisine in Champaign-Urbana. It’s fast, fresh and authentic. Unfortunately, it’s notorious for its small space and crowded dinein experience, and that’s why takeout is a great option. Satisfy hunger pains with many Mexican City style classics. All ingredients are fresh and prepared in-house with many meat and topping options. Maize’s menu features a variety of options. Popular dishes include gorditas with steak, tacos al pastor (pork), sopes and tacos mexica. Maize is located on 60 E Green Street in Champaign and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
Sushi Ichiban
Located on Wright Street between the Engineering Quad and Main Quad, Sushi Ichiban is a great takeout option for a quick meal. Sushi Ichiban has some of the most affordable sushi on campus. They offer lunch and dinner sushi combos and a teriyaki lunch for as little as $5.75. Sushi Ichiban serves a variety of dishes, from classic rolls to chef’s rolls, udon noodle soups, Sashimi and many other Japanese classics. I recommend picking up a meal and eating on the Main Quad for a quick lunch between classes or on your way home for an easy dinner.
Jurassic Grill
Open until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, Jurassic Grill is the perfect place to get late night takeout. Offering mouthwateringly juicy burgers and fries, you can get a made-to-order single patty burger for as little as $3.99 or double patty for $5.49. Jurassic Grill offers your standard lettuce, pickles and tomatoes, but they also offer options like grilled mushrooms, grilled onions and jalapeños free of charge.

Bangkok Thai and Pho 911
For a big and bold meal to go, Bangkok Thai and Pho 911 is the place to go on campus. Offering hearty and spicy southeast Asian dishes for under $10, there’s something on the menu for everyone. Student favorites include pad thai, pho and beef stir fry, but the extensive menu offers even more choices. Spiciness is cus-
tomizable from a level of zero to seven. With hefty servings and quick service, you can enjoy your takeout in no time. Keep an eye out for everyday lunch and dinner specials and you can get meals for as little as $6. Bangkok Thai and Pho 911 is located on 410 E. Green St. Unit 3.

W
hile students on campus may only crawl from Joe’s to Red Lion to Brother’s and just drink Bud Light or Coors at every location, Champaign-Urbana offers a thriving microbrewery scene for beer aficionados.
Destihl
When people think of Destihl, the fi rst thing that comes to mind is often their food. But besides having a great menu, Destihl also doubles as a brewery. The restaurant calls itself a “gastrobrewpub,” meaning it is a pub that serves artisan food and brews its own beer. Destihl has several different beers featured year-round as well as many seasonal beers. Notable is its WiLD SOUR series and a canned Gose style beer called HERE GOSE NOTHIN’. Although the Gose is not brewed in the Champaign location, it is brewed close by in its Bloomington location.
Destihl is located on 301 N. Neil St. in Champaign.
The Blind Pig Co. and Blind Pig Brewery
The Blind Pig Co. and Blind Pig Brewery — better known as Big Pig and Little Pig, respectively — are two of the most well-known bars in Champaign-Urbana. Located on 120 N. Walnut St. in Champaign, The Blind Pig Co. has been serving beer since 2004 and it currently has 27 beers on tap. In 2009, it decided to expand its business and open its own brewery. Blind Pig Brewery is located on 120 N. Neil St. in Champaign, and is notably marked by its large beer garden. At both locations, it has many unique brews such as its Scary Cherry Milk Stout, an imperial full-bodied stout with a slight taste of cherries, and their Hattori Hanzo, a pale ale with aromas of lemongrass and dill. It also has great drink deals. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Blind Pig Brewery has “Mug Night” with $2 off draughts after you purchase one of its branded
Brewery mugs. Draft Magazine listed Blind Pig in its Best 150 Bars in the USA, and it’s defi nitely a local favorite.
every day before opening. The tour costs $10 per person and includes samples of the beers.
Riggs Beer Company
Triptych Brewing opened its doors in 2013, making it newer than The Blind Pig or Destihl. Rather than focusing on the bar aspect of its business, Triptych focuses on its brewing. At Triptych, you can take a tour of its tap room, which is great for those who are looking to learn more about beer or are interested in seeing how it is made. Triptych also offers smaller servings of beer for $1 for those interested in sampling multiple beers. Regular glasses are sold starting at $4. Triptych also bottles its beer. You can fi nd Triptych beer in stores and restaurants all around central Illinois. A short drive from Champaign-Urbana, Triptych is located at 1703 Woodfield Dr. in Savoy and is well worth the trip.
Brothers Matt and Darin Riggs, both University alumni, opened Riggs Brewing Company in June 2016 on High Cross Road in Urbana. The two have combined their military backgrounds with a formal education in brewing to create four brews — the American Lager, Red Lager, Hefeweizen and India Pale Lager — and a seasonal beer option. The tap room seats 95 people and is surrounded by an outdoor beer garden that seats 200 people. From the beer garden, customers can see the test plots of barley and hops that the brothers grow to use in the beers. Local food trucks, including LMK’s Smoking BBQ and Fernando’s Food Truck, are scheduled to be outside the beer garden to sell food. Special events and live music are also scheduled, and can be found on the online calendar. The brewery offers an hour-long tour

Hammerhead Coffee opens in Champaign CARA FENG Buzz staff writer
A
new coffee spot has come to Champaign: Hammerhead Coffee opened Saturday, Sept. 17 on the fi rst floor of the new Latitude apartments at 608 E University Ave. Hammerhead Coffee is named after Hammerhead Records, a local record company that signed artists in the Champaign-Urbana area from 1993-2000. In a corner of the coffee shop sits a table made to look like a cassette tape, with “Hammerhead Records” written on the label.
Visitors walking into the indoor sitting area will fi rst see a slick bar table which is dominated by the brand new La Marzocco espresso machine and a lineup of the shop’s beautiful loose-leaf tea selection. Having spent some time café-crawling in America’s major cities, it surprises me to see such a well-equipped café opening here in Champaign. Every step of Hammerhead’s coffee making process involves the choicest of tools, from its water purification system to its drip brewing machine — this place means business, and by business I mean an incredibly dedicated cup of coffee. The menu features lattes and cappuccinos like the ones found at most coffee shops in the area, but other options like pour over
and Chemex coffees are also available. Coffee can be taken to go or served in-house. With wi-fi access, plentiful seating, and an option for a $3.50 bottomless cup of coffee, Hammerhead is a wonderful place to study or chat with a friend. Sofi a Yotis is the manager at Hammerhead. A recent graduate from the University of Illinois, she has been a part of the story from its conception all the way up to the soft opening this summer. According to Yotis, coffee-drinking has been a part of her life since she was young, but it has grown into a passion since then. Hammerhead Coffee aims to bring an excellent coffee experience to the community while also promoting local businesses;
their pastries and confections come from Pekara Bakery, The Scotchman’s Kitchen and Hopscotch: Cakes & Confections. In addition to serving food from nearby businesses, the coffee shop also aims to showcase local musicians from the Champaign-Urbana area. On its website, Hammerhead Coffee promises to “have great coffee, great service, and a great welcoming space,” and it defi nitely lives up to that promise. Come and grab something to eat, work on that midterm project, and enjoy a $0.80 refi ll for brewed coffee while in house.

C-U restaurants offer great meals at good prices Watson’s Shack and Rail
SAM SMITHSON Buzz staff writer
As
a college student spending most of your time in class rather than working a job with a paycheck, you often weigh the price of a meal over its quality. However, sticking to a small budget when eating out in the ChampaignUrbana area does not have to resign you to fast food. There are many places offering unique dishes for a reasonable price.
I don’t know if I’ve met a person on this planet that doesn’t like a little bit of fried chicken. Dishes and ingredients go out of fashion — we’re looking at you, kale and fancy cupcakes — but fried chicken has been a crowd-favorite for literally hundreds of years. The folks at Watson’s got the memo, and have been delivering incredible chicken at more than reasonable prices for almost a year now. A dark meat platter with one side will run you $11. While I won’t argue that the price point is close to a place like Cravings, fried chicken made by one of our best local chefs made with delicious, locally produced chicken is a steal at prices like those. The restaurant is located on Neil Street in downtown Champaign and offers alcoholic slushies, sandwiches and an impressive list of side dishes to go with the fried chicken.
Cracked
LILY KATZ THE DAILY ILLINI
Cracked food truck outside of Joe’s Brewery.
A staple of CU’s food truck scene, Cracked has been a great choice at both noon and midnight for many years. Whether you’re a Vegasm lover or a Sloppy Jose fanatic, Cracked has plenty to offer to all. And, at about $6 dollars a sandwich, you don’t have to break the bank to get whatev-
er you want. Cracked also offers various types of tater tots, including parmesan truffle tots and sweet potato tots. Look out for the truck outside of Joe’s, on Goodwin and Oregon, and at Mathews and Springfield.
Big Grove Tavern
I know what you’re thinking: “Big Grove? Cheap? No freaking way.” Well, we would argue that value is more than just the lowest number next to a dollar sign, it’s bang for your buck. And what a bang a brunch at Big Grove is. Its reputation for quality, well-sourced food comes through in their unpretentious brunch menu that features comforting favorites like Chilaquiles ($12), Fried Egg BLTs ($9), and French Toast Bread Pudding ($9). And, for an added kicker, they also offer $8 all you can drink mimosas with the order of any entrée. Now that’s what we’d call bang for your buck.
Cravings
Cravings offers exactly what a good lowdollar Chinese place should: lightning fast service, large servings of great food and, most importantly, a low price tag. You want to talk value? How about a heaping pile of Mongolian beef and rice ($6.25) slung out in a matter of minutes?
TIFFANY ZHANG THE DAILY ILLINI
One of Big Grove Tavern’s appetizers is the Tavern Poutine, composed of house fries, tender beef brisket, demi glace, cheddar curds and sunnyside egg. Wham, get eating. Not in the mood for beef? How about some of that good Moo Goo Gai Pan? Oh yeah, the combo platter is only $6.50. Something else on the side today? Four crab rangoons? That’ll be $1.99. Thank you, and I know you’ll come again.

It’s a date: places to take your significant other HOLIDAY TANG Saff writer
C
ollege is a place where romantic encounters happen. If you think you may have already met the love of your life or you are holding out hope that you’ll meet them soon, these restaurants will help you have the perfect date. Choosing the restaurant can set the entire tone of your date. Do you want a fun atmosphere with lots of people and music, or mood lighting and quiet conversation? If you are looking for a fun restaurant with great food, try the Champaign location of Black Dog Smoke & Ale House. Located in the old train depot on Chestnut Street, this second branch of the Urbana restaurant opened in 2015. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., but be aware that sometimes certain meats will be used up before the end of the day. Because the meat is prepared ahead of time to achieve the delicious flavor, once the day’s supply is out, there is no more. Luckily, whether you order the burnt ends, brisket, pulled pork or really anything else on the menu, it is delicious. The side dishes are arguably just as good as the meat. The Mac & Cheese and Blackdog Cornbread are some of my favorites. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cheerful. Patrons have the choice of sitting at the bar or at a table. While it may not be a traditional date experience, it will be fun and both of you will leave feeling stuffed. If your date has just gotten back from
a study abroad trip and is missing the European cafes, try the Bread Company on Goodwin Street in Urbana. The family owned restaurant has been open for over 30 years and offers seating indoors and outdoors. All the bread served is freshly baked, and the Swiss cuisine is wonderful. The lunch menu features sandwiches, including a portobello sandwich with brie cheese and raspberry aioli that is to die for. The dinner menu includes pasta, pizza, fondue and more. After dinner, treat your date to chocolate fondue and a cup of coffee while you chat in the cozy interior of the restaurant. Sharing is caring, and splitting tapas at Radio Maria’s in downtown Champaign may be the way to your date’s heart. The restaurant has been in Champaign for 20 years and describes itself on its website as “a hot spot of art, fi ne dining, and a good time.” The interior showcases the work of its owners, both of whom are alumni of the University. The menu offers tapas — appetizers made popular by their famous place in Spanish cuisine — and full-sized entrees. For a unique date idea, go to brunch at Radio Maria’s. The omelettes, sandwiches and sour cream coffee cake are all ways to start the day off right. While the true success of a date depends on the chemistry between the two individuals, local restaurants can provide a wonderful atmosphere and give the date a solid foundation. A great meal never hurt anyone, either.

The Hub provides new cuisine, nightlife ISABELLA JACKSON Supplements editor

ing in fall 2016, The Hub successfully combines a fun atmosphere, great food and an extensive list of beers and cocktails. My mom was in town for a short visit on Saturday and I wanted to try someplace new for lunch. The Hub was a great decision. The exterior of the building looks very similar to other apartment buildings in the area — boxy, silver and towering over most of the other buildings on the block — but upon walking inside, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bar and dining area complete with multiple televisions and a second level with additional seating overlooking the restaurant. The menu was not overwhelmingly large, and offered everything from burgers to salads to sandwiches to mac and cheese. The menu also featured an appetizer list, called “shareable,” and five other entree options. I tried the Mushroom Swiss burger, and my mom ordered the Siracha Chicken mac and cheese All of the burgers are served with a knife stuck through the middle of the bun which makes for a unique but practical presentation. The knife was sharp enough for me to cleanly cut my burger in half, without dragging any of the toppings out onto the plate. It was clear that the Mushroom Swiss burger was very fresh and well-prepared. The toppings were flavorful without overpowering the burger itself, and the arugula kept the cheese from turning the bun soggy. The Hub Sauce was flavorful, but muted enough not to detract from the other toppings. The burger was good, but the Siracha Chicken mac and cheese blew me away. The
dish combines grilled chicken, bacon, broccoli and a lot of cheddar cheese for a spicy, rich flavor. Also on the mac and cheese menu are The Uptown, which combines ricotta, a cheese blend and tender short rib, and the Hub Favorite, with pepperoni, sausage, bacon and cheddar cheese. The mac and cheese options are served in a skillet. Considering how rich the dish is, the portion is very large. The cocktail menu contains colorful drinks with memorable names, such as the brilliantly purple Prickly Pear Margarita or the Fighting “Illini” Mojito. The food is a little pricier than most other campus bars and burger joints — most items, including the burgers and mac and cheese run between $9 and $12. With some dishes, the mac and cheese in particular, the portions are rather generous. My mom took home enough of the mac and cheese for a second lunch, which she generously donated to her hungry college student. It was just as delicious reheated. Parking for the restaurant is located south of the building with just fourteen spots. For those coming from campus, it would probably be easier to walk to the restaurant. On its website, The Hub expresses that it wants to be the place students come to hang out after class or a game or “to just get away from the daily grind for a bit.” By staying open until midnight during the week and 2 a.m. on Saturdays, The Hub may become part of the Champaign-Urbana nightlife.

hile students and locals alike may flock to popular restaurants like Black Dog and Papa Del’s, Champaign-Urbana offers many wonderful dining options off the beaten path for the adventurous eater.
Huaraches Moroleon
Tucked away deep in residential Urbana, far from the eyes of casual campus eaters, Huaraches Moroleon embodies the hidden in hidden gems. Right on the intersection of Philo and Washington streets, Huaraches is as unassuming as it is delicious. There’s not a bad choice on its menu, but its namesake dish is a must try along with its ridiculously good margaritas. And, as an added bonus, most of its dishes hover around the $7-9 range, more than reasonable for the best
Caribbean Grill
The story of Caribbean Grill is a story of hidden potential. Chef and owner Mike Harden didn’t come from a traditional foodservice background. Harden graduated from the University with a B.A. in business, followed by an MBA; however, after realizing his love of cooking and entertaining, Mike opened Caribbean Grill in 2010. After five years of doing catering and weekly meals out of the Refinery (talk about hidden), Caribbean Grill’s food truck burst on the scene with an incredible showing at the 2015 Taste of Champaign, and has seen steady growth since. It’s still not a household name but, with their food, we doubt it will be hidden much longer. The menu includes Jamaican jerk chicken, jerk meatballs and beef patties, along with sides such as rice and beans and fried plantains.
Sushi Kame
If you want the best sushi in C-U, look no
further than Sushi Kame. A little out of the way of the main stretch of major restaurants in downtown Champaign, Sushi Kame has been a secret well-kept by locals for years. Sushi Kame offers all of your basic sushi restaurant dishes, but the quality and value outpaces some of the flashier sushi joints in town. On top of that, the chef’s specials are always inventive and the service is excellent.
Fusilli Tony’s
A rare bird to see on campus, Fusilli Tony’s is known for its unfussy Italian-American fare including Italian beefs, pasta and its specialty: the “Sloppy Giuseppe.” You have to be vigilant to snag yourself any of Fusilli Tony’s food — the truck does most of its business at events like the Food Truck Rally and the Champaign Farmer’s Market, with the occasional stop in downtown Champaign or by Carle. So, keep your eyes on their Twitter and Facebook pages for a chance to steal a bite.

Campus coffee shops are both convenient and cozy HARRISON LINDHOLM Staff writer
P
eople often speak of soulmates. I always thought this was a falsehood. There was no way that someone out there was specially made for me! This is how I went through life this way until one fateful day. Destiny found me, and I have been in love, deeply in love ever since. The day I drank coffee for the first time was the day my life changed. Coffee, that hot, dark, steamy liquid that smells oh-sogood. When a cup is made, its aroma diffuses into all available space. There are many places to get your coffee fix in the area, and it is important to anyone who appreciates this wonderful beverage to find a favorite spot to pick up a latte, cappuccino or black light roast. Starting with the basics, there is the store everybody knows: Starbucks. If you have awaited the return of the pumpkin spice latte, Starbucks is located in the Union, in the Illini Union Bookstore, on Green Street and on Oregon Street by Krannert on campus. It may be hard to scrape together five dollars of pennies from between the couch cushions in your apartment, but once that handmade iced ven-
ti soy vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso hits your taste buds, you will be in heaven. If you are more interested in local flavor and a great atmosphere, you can go to one of the Espresso Royale locations on campus. The company has coffee shops on a few other campuses in the Midwest, but keeps its local coffee shop feel due to the laid-back personality of the workers, the quirky atmosphere of the décor and the locally-purchased baked goods served at each location. College students love Espresso Royale’s daily deals. One of the best deals is the $2 café lattes on Wednesdays, but customers also enjoy free flavor shots, $3 mocha on Mondays and $2 chai lattes on Fridays. Another great option is to go to Caffe Paradiso on Lincoln Avenue. It has many great coffees there for your caffeine needs, but a special part of Paradiso is the tea varieties it serves. It has a full tea bar, including classics like Chamomile and more unique flavors, like the peach blossom tea. The atmosphere in Paradiso is all that a frequent coffee shop patron could want. There are many places for you to sit and plenty of space to study. It provides free wi-fi, and the workers there make you feel as if you are being invited into their home.
Coffee and tea are served in ceramic mugs. Although this shop may be far for students living on the Champaign side of campus, it is always worth the walk, and in the winter, a hot cup of tea will warm you up quickly. Of course, as any college student living on a budget knows, buying coffee every day can get expensive. If it is between 3-6 p.m., you may want to get your coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts to take advantage of the 99 cent iced coffee. This deal is a must for any caffeine fanatic. At any other time of the day, Dunkin’ is a good option; it has many different food items in addition to the coffee. Besides the obvious donuts, an assortment of breakfast sandwiches are offered including the fried chicken sandwich. These sandwiches and donuts make Dunkin’ a much more savory option for a quick bite than many other fast food places. Whether you start every day off with a fresh cup of coffee or you only become an addict during finals week, there are many places to go when you need your fix. It is important that you find your place in this big coffee network, but no need to fret; all of the options are sure to leave you satisfied.

Dinner delivery options for when leaving the house is too much work ANDIE SCHERER buzz staff writer
My
favorite social interactions are those in which a delivery man knocks on my door and says, “Here’s your food!” And I say, “Thank you, kind sir. Many blessings upon you and your fi rst born child.” So yes, I do like food of many flavors, colors and varieties — but I especially like it when it is delivered straight to my door. Here are just a few of the top restaurants in the Champaign-Urbana area that will deliver to your own door upon request (and a delivery fee).
DP Dough
DP Dough is the essential late-night delivery option. You know what I’m talking about; it’s for when you stumble home at 2 a.m. — obviously, just because you’re naturally clumsy — and need something to satisfy your greasiest, cheesiest, sauciest cravings. You’ll wake up the next morning to the empty box on the kitchen counter and reminisce over the short-lived affair you shared with that precious calzone. DP Dough has been gracing college campuses with its enormous variety of calzones all over the United States since 1987; the University of Illinois is one of those blessed campuses. Ben Wyatt from “Parks and Recreation” fondly describes the calzone as a “delicate little dough pocket fi lled with tomato sauce, cheese and seasoned meat.” He would defi nitely endorse DP Dough if he wasn’t a fictional character. Among the most popular choices are the Roni Zoni, BBQ Chicken Zone and Buffer Zone. Choose the Construction Zone to build your own calzone or you can check out the rest of the menu online. Its open until 1 a.m. on Sunday, 2 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 3 a.m. Thursday and Friday so you’ll have plenty of time to get your fix.
Insomnia Cookies
It’s all in the name here, folks. Open until 3 a.m. every day, nothing will put you to sleep faster than a dozen sugarhigh inducing cookies from Insomnia. Okay, that’s not true. But if you’ve got a late-night sweet tooth (or anytime, really), Insomnia is for you. In my experience, Insomnia cookies also make fantastic Valentine’s Day presents for your significant other, just in case you happen to be studying abroad 3,000 miles away for the semester. There’s no better way to show your love or appreciation like a warm box of treats. Of course, there are the classics: Choco-
late Chunk, Sugar Cookie, Oatmeal Raisin and Snickerdoodle, but sometimes you’ve got to step up your cookie game. Try ordering one of their Deluxe Cookies; these include Triple Chocolate Chunk, S’mores, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. One extra tip: you’ll need a fork for the Deluxe cookies. They’re honestly too much gooey delight for your hands to manage. If you have one of those “go big or go home” attitudes, throw some ice cream in the middle of two cookies and order yourself a Cookiewich. Check out the rest of the menu online, and go crazy, pal.

Champaign-Urbana has an abundant supply of Chinese delivery options. Deciding which restaurant to order from can be perhaps one of the most difficult, argument-inducing decisions you will face in the realm of delivery food. Do not fear, for here comes your solution: BoBo China. Let me fi rst start by saying that the food is not delivered in simple styrofoam, but instead in charming Chinese takeout boxes. Admit it, you love those too. I cannot even begin to tell you how huge of a selling point this is for me. But if the presentation doesn’t convince you, the food is pretty legit. You can’t go wrong with General Tso’s orange chicken, but prepare yourselves to dive deep into their extensive menu to fi nd exactly what your heart desires. I prefer white rice over the fried rice; it’s a classic choice. Find their menu online, but make sure to order early; they close at 9 p.m.
DP Dough delivers pizza and calzones with a variety of toppings.
Can’t decide what to order? Sometimes you’ve just got to wing it. And when that happens, go for Wingin Out. It claims that its all about saucy wings, and they it does not lie. Oh, the sauce galore. Try its variations on the classic, buffalo sauce, ranging on the hotness scale from mild all the way to intense (not for the faint of heart). If buffalo sauce isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Its also has Caribbean Jerk, Parmesan Peppercorn, Kickin’ Ranch and Teriyaki — just to provide a slight glimpse into your bountiful options. Undeniably its most popular sauce, Honey BBQ, is a blend of Sweet Honey and BBQ. It will take your taste buds hostage and you won’t mind. Check out its full line of sauces online. It’s probably not socially acceptable to drink these sauces by the gallon, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t want to try.
BoBo China’s General Tso’s chicken is served with white or fried rice.
