fall, the Champaign-Urbana community takes time out of its day to vote on the eventual contents of this issue — the best of the best in these towns. The buzz staff has spent the last few months talking about it, the last few weeks planning it and many, many days designing it. Now, in your hands, is the finished product. This issue of buzz is all about you, the reader. This behemoth could not have been done without you voting on multitudes of categories ranging from the best Indian food to the best place to get a tattoo. We tallied your votes, ranked them, tracked down the winners and wrote about

them. We also added some of our own opinions, for those gems in Champaign-Urbana that don't necessarily translate well into a reader's poll. I hope that these editor's picks highlight things that may have flown under the radar. Moving to C-U as an 18-year-old fresh out of high school is a weird, fun and disorienting experience. It's overwhelming enough just trying to remember the names of all the campus buildings, so it can seem daunting to get out of your comfort zone and explore what else is out there. Joining buzz a few days into my college career gave me the opportunity to venture out into that unknown, and it has infinitely changed my life for the better. buzz opened my eyes to new experiences, places to go and people to meet. I saw that our arts and entertainment community is filled to the brim with talent and with some of the kindest people I have met in my 21

years. I can't tell you how many people I've met through buzz, whether it be fellow staffers, members of the community or just familiar faces at events who have become important parts of my life. I've been with buzz since fall 2015, and while the magazine has been through various incarnations from then until now, we've continued with our mission to showcase the best that these twin cities have to offer. Being part of the community is something buzz prides itself on, and 20 years in, the Best of CU remains a testament to the incredible spirit of interconnectedness here. Champaign-Urbana has so much to offer, so regardless of whether you are a student trying to branch off campus or a local resident looking for weekend plans, I hope this issue helps you find what you're looking for. ekaufmn2@readbuzz.com

The beef brisket is similarly served on either

There will be something for everyone, from spice lovers to adventurous eaters. There are also Americanized options for more lowkey Chinese food eaters. Ordering is simple at Golden Harbor. First, pick your dish and pay at the register. Second,

find a table and serve yourself drinks and grab some utensils. Third, avoid the scale when you get home because the portions are huge and you will stuff your face. The portions are quite large, so it is recommended to grab some friends and share a few dishes family-style. There will definitely be no shortage of food, and you can try a little bit of everything.

people have that here in Champaign,” he said. Maize is also a favorite because of the abundance of options it offers people who have dietary restrictions. off the Main Quad, The Red Herring is a great option for people looking for delicious, plant-based food on campus. The restaurant features an extensive all-vegan menu, making it popular among vegetarians, vegans and omnivores alike. The Red Herring was founded on providing a space for local social and environmental advocacy groups to gather since 1967 and continues to follow these traditions to this day.

The restaurant puts emphasis on using mostly local and organic produce and even grows some of its own food. Holly Curia works as one of the managers and chefs at The Red Herring. "Being able to figure ways to be constantly cycling through seasonal produce to be supporting our local farms, to me, that is a huge obvious sign of growth that we've been able to achieve because supporting local farms isn't as simple as being like, ‘Oh, I'm going to

buy from them instead of this,'” Curia said. “It takes building those relationships, really strategizing your menu to be able to match the seasonal rhythms of food in central Illinois.” The restaurant also hosts weekly international fusion dinners which feature a menu inspired by a different ethnic or cultural identity. Himalayan Chimney is the new winner of Best Indian Food. Run by the same owners as the now-closed Sitara, The Himalayan Chimney is an upscale restaurant located right next to the The Art Theater in downtown Champaign, and its food covers all parts of India and above. The atmosphere of The Himalayan Chimney is intimate, with candles and dim lighting. It’s the perfect place for a date or having a meal with

family and friends. When eating at The Himalayan Chimney, one thing I noticed is they had quite a bit of south Indian food on the menu, which definitely excited me. For those who don't know, much of the traditional Indian food served in restaurants is primarily north Indian food. South Indian restaurants are fairly rare, so if anyone is really missing sambar and other south Indian fare, look no further. In addition to its Indian cuisine, The Himalayan Chimney also offers food from north of the Indian

border, with Nepali dishes. The restaurant has vegetarian and vegan options and includes a special section of its menu for “chicken lovers,” in which all the best chicken dishes are listed. The Himalayan Chimney also occasionally does themed dinners on Saturday nights, including a completely vegan meal and a traditional Nepali thali. It does plenty of promotional nights as well, so the restaurant really makes an effort to cater to the C-U community.

The cafe offers a bit of everything, from coffee to sandwiches. It is hard to imagine how it has such an extensive menu but still manages to make everything so satisfactory. Aroma isn't limited to just food: Local artists work hangs on the walls and the cafe

even holds open mic nights. Aroma's management said they “feel honored” to even be considered as C-U’s best bakery. Management also wanted to clarify they are more closely aligned with a coffee shop than a bakery, saying “coffee is our thing.” Likewise, they wanted to be sure to pay homage to the bakeries that provide them with half of their baked goods: Rick’s Bakery & Cafe in Urbana

This year, the John Street sandwich joint has ended the long reign of Merry Ann’s for Best Drunk Food. Known for classics such as the Fat Milf and the Fat Frat, its combination of creative names and

stuffed sandwiches really helps it stand out from your typical sandwich joint. No matter what sandwich you get, expect it to be delicious and filling. The combination of fries, mayo and grease will be more than enough to satisfy any hungry drunk. Whether you order in or take out, the food comes fast. The portions are the size of a full meal, with such a wide variety of ingredients wrapped up in between two slices of bread, calling a hotdog a

sandwich wouldn’t be the wildest interpretation of the word. Finally, no discussion of Fat Sandwich would be complete without mentioning the long-standing and famous food challenge it harbors. The food truck is typically stationed at Matthews and Springfield avenues near the Engineering Quad or on the corner of Goodwin Avenue and Oregon Street near the Krannert Center for Performing Arts. The food truck offers a wide variety of break-

fast sandwiches and burritos, all made on the spot from the grill. “I definitely recommend that Hungry Chief. For customer favorites, that one is pretty popular, plus the Sloppy Jose,” Daniel Krause, Cracked's manager, said. The Hungry Chief includes scrambled eggs, smoked chorizo, hash browns, green onions and pepper jack cheese, all wrapped up into a warm breakfast burrito. For the second year in a row and two years after it almost shut down, Jarling’s has been voted the best dessert in Champaign-Urbana. Jarling’s menu remains as exhaustive and wonderful as it’s ever been. Its signature Snowstorms seem to come in every flavor combination under the sun, and that’s just

one part of its delicious selection of sundaes, shakes, floats and more. And these sweet treats have no age restrictions. Owner Tom Siegel notes that even among the countless people who visit Jarling’s, “it is especially heartwarming to see people of all ages, from babies to those in their golden years.” When accepting this award last year, Jarling's promised to do “our best to reach out to more of the community,” and it has

achieved that goal in the time since. As thanks to the community that brought it to prominence and later saved it, Jarling’s hosts Fundraising Days at the Cup, which Siegel explains as “a program to help the nonprofits in our community.” Since the program’s birth, the custard shop has donated over $7,000 to nonprofits. Milkshake” is definitely a bold claim. Just as Buddy the Elf’s “World’s best cup of coffee,” or Michael Scott’s “World’s Best Boss” have proven, these titles are often subjective. So when I went into the iconic Courier Cafe to try one of its beloved milkshakes — I tried chocolate — I was extremely skeptical. After trying one, however, I can certainly understand the opinion of the masses: The Courier Cafe’s milkshakes are incredible. It is

no wonder this place has won the title of “Best Milkshake” two years in a row. Fans of thicker milkshakes will love the creamy yet thick texture of these handcrafted shakes. I was even getting small chunks of chocolate with each sip that enhanced the overall experience. Chocolate lovers will be pleased to know that hot fudge can also be added for only $1 more. The factor that sets The Courier Cafe’s shakes apart from the rest, though, is the rich flavor. Their shakes are packed with an incred-

ibly rich flavor that isn’t rich enough to be too much, but is enough to give you so much pleasure that you might think you’re in heaven. Each sip of the $5 milkshake blew my mind to the very last drop. The Courier Cafe also offers delicious homecooked meals that would be great preceding your shake. From a large breakfast menu to a dinner menu where every item looks splendid, you will surely have a great meal in this hometown favorite restaurant.

a bathroom on campus can be tough, particularly when there are so many nasty ones around campus — have you seen the bathrooms in Foellinger? Have no fear, though, because you can always count on the Illini Union to have a clean toilet waiting for you. The Union is the perfect location for the

best bathroom. It’s right on the Main Quad — at the north end, to be exact — so you’re bound to pass it on your way to class. Or, if you need a bathroom break in between classes and can’t stomach the building you’re in, just head to the Union. It’s close enough that you won’t be late. There are plenty of bathrooms in the building, but the best one, by far, is the Union

basement. I’ve never seen a toilet clogged or a mess made, and it’s a bathroom that doesn’t stink. Instead, it smells like cleaning products. It smells clean. You can always count on the basement bathrooms to be neat and tidy. Now, these aren’t the most decorated bathrooms, like you’d find in the English building. It’s a simple, gray aesthetic and looks a little drab. But don’t mistake its lack of decoration

Worner wins Best Server in ChampaignUrbana for her work at The Clark Bar in Champaign. She has worked there for the past five years as an assistant manager, server and bartender. She also is responsible for the bar’s marketing and social media. Her work there is a family affair, as her mother, Lynda Worner, has owned and operated The Clark Bar since it opened its doors nine years ago. Lynda has owned the building the bar lives in and the various other establishments it has previously housed, most recently Basmati Thai, for over 17 years. The Clark Bar has become known for the strong sense of community it fosters and Taylor’s various contributions have played a large role in making it happen. “Taylor always makes you feel welcome right

when you walk through the door. Her warm personality and ready smile makes everyone feel like family,” said John Lindell, a Clark Bar regular. “Plus, she pours a stiff drink.” Back in February, Taylor told The Daily Illini that she appreciates the wide range of people who are drawn to the bar, most likely a result of the diverse musical acts that are booked to perform there. But she also acknowledged the way those who frequent the bar on the regular have come together, something to which she credits her mother and the family-oriented environment Lynda has established as the owner and founder of the bar. “Everybody always calls us their ‘Cheers’ bar because everybody knows everybody, and everybody feels very at home,” Taylor said. kmp2@readbuzz.com

The UrbanaChampaign Independent Media Center can help, which is located near the Lincoln Square Mall. Though its exterior is a little rundown, don’t let that fool you. Inside, it holds a great community of people who strive for excellence and creativity as their overall goal is to

unite people through most media outlets. The UCIMC was founded in 2000 by artists and activists; it could be described as a grassroots YMCA for the arts. Once you walk into its doors, you’re met with beautiful pieces of art on the walls to remind you of its mission. Even if you don’t have formal training with the arts, the UCIMC offers things from community storytelling to yoga; however, if you’d like to learn, the UCIMC could definitely

teach you. It has a lot of opportunities to listen to live music, which is great for those who don’t necessarily like the bar setting. You’re even able to rent out space for any type of meeting. For a small town meeting place, it has accomplished a lot with only two paid employees and 1,023 volunteers (of which it is always looking for more). For example, there have been $22.5 million in funds brought up for the community center. The UCIMC has

growth and development of Champaign-Urbana’s comedy scene can be attributed to the work and passion of Jesse Tuttle, along with his brother Justin. Jesse’s title of Best CU Personality is well-deserved, as he took what was initially just a weekly open-mic night at a local C-U bar to what has now become a comedy hub of Central Illinois, attracting comedians from all over the country. Jesse’s work in cultivating the area’s stand-up scene stems from his desire to create a fast-paced comedy show that keeps audiences entertained from start to finish, week after week. Jesse hand-picks the performers each week, ensuring they can deliver for audiences and come armed with well-rehearsed and high-quality material. Jesse had little prior experience in organizing comedy events, and

his knowledge came from watching other shows and choosing the elements he liked best to incorporate into his own shows, to make them as unique and entertaining as possible. He has opened for over a hundred nationally touring shows and has become a widely known comedian in the area in his own right.
