AS I’M WRITING THIS, I am also making a packing list for our upcoming cruise around Japan … a holiday my husband and I have been planning for months. While we are very much looking forward to the trip, we are also starting to think about our next adventure. WORDS LUCY ALLEN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE What did you think when you got the call from Jason Sudeikis that they were bringing Ted Lasso back with the women’s team? I just thought it was a no-brainer … and everything that I hoped it would be and knew it would be. I’m so proud to be the kind of conduit for all that story to come out. And our girls, our new girls, you wait – they are magic, they really are. The whole season four has come from a thought from Keeley, it’s gorgeous. I just thought how beautiful it was that the young soul of Keeley, who was a little bit lost in season one, is then the instigator of something that is so vast and pushes everyone out of their comfort zone, including Ted, including Rebecca. Rebecca thinking that she’s a feminist, finding out she’s a little bit wonky on that front, which I actually found quite difficult to play because I am so much of a feminist. So I loved that … I loved that kind of sliding door difference between myself and Rebecca. Was there a time when you didn’t think there would be another season? I didn’t think it was going to be any time soon, but I also didn’t think any of us emotionally were really ever going to go anywhere, fully. There would always be a patch that was forever Richmond in us all. So the genius of the women’s team, rippling through Jason’s bloodstream, always supporting women’s sports, feels so right. And it’s so lovely that Juno’s character [Keeley] is the one that instigates that. At the end of season three, your character Rebecca got a boyfriend, and this continues in season four, right? Yes, we’re three years in, and they are settled. She has something that has always eluded her … she has the love and thought of a child ... and it’s come to her in a different way than she thought it might. So, yeah, it’s been really lovely playing something that much further in that’s had time to grow. He’s just wonderful, Matteo [van der Grijn], who plays Matthijs – just a fabulous, fabulous actor. And we have a kind of meeting point as well because he’s very much established in musical theatre and we just immediately got on. So I was very pleased to be back playing scenes with him. It’s a very hard act to follow the loss of our beloved Anthony Head but if I’m going to be with anybody, then he’s just a glorious person. Since you are so musical and talented, do you find yourself sometimes breaking out into song in between filming? Do you know who breaks out into song? Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt and Brett Goldstein, actually. [laughs] They are all musical theatre lovers and they always kind of know musical references. They look at me as if I just have this endless knowledge and I’m like, ‘Guys, I don’t!’ [laughs] They are just so on it with all of that. Brett’s a dark horse in terms of musical theatre. I wanted him to come into my Christmas special and just come on from the wings. Deadpan. Tapping. [laughs] >> issue 116

How much do you love the developing friendship between Keeley and Rebecca? Oh, I think Jason would have a little gentle fight on his hands if this had been diminished in any way … that would have weirded us out. The fact that Keeley is so much part of Rebecca and they are each other’s counsel, completely, in so many different ways. It’s been so beautiful watching the incredible arc that Rebecca’s already had over three seasons, so when you knew you were stepping back into her character how did you find the balance? Well, firstly, I was glad that the balance that has kind of come to Rebecca’s force wasn’t quick. It would have been too soon in season three to see any of that for me. So I’ve always wanted it to be a kind of slow realisation that she could come back to herself and that was okay, and to have lived through the trauma of Rupert and her inability to conceive and all of those things. I’m thrilled that, you know, the writers are – I’m sure people get bored of me saying – that this lot in the writer’s room are just so extraordinary that I could have literally turned up day one of season four having not looked at anything and have signed on the dotted line. That is an entirely unique experience for me. I didn’t need to know an arc. I didn’t need to know where she was going at all. And that’s a really precious, privileged place to find yourself. So I didn’t need to think about the balance or imbalance at all. I’ve loved her arc this season … she has much more of her joy back and doesn’t feel any shame in showing it or enjoying it.

I knew that they have always drawn her so beautifully and I feel it all the time, the privilege of being entrusted with this glorious woman and learning bits and pieces along the way from her myself. And none more so than with the women’s team and fully stepping into her greatness to bring them to the forefront. So yeah, I’ve just loved, loved playing her this season. I didn’t think I could enjoy playing her more than the first three seasons, but I did. The nuance and the undercurrent that you bring to the way that you play Rebecca is fantastic. What have been some of the undercurrents that you’ve really found in bringing her back at this point in her life? I think what I was saying earlier about, you know, allowing herself. She’s been indoctrinated since birth to think that men are superior and is only realising that now. So I love the fact that you see, you know, it’s situation comedy; you see it in a funny way that her mom was saying, you know, women need to know their place and men are superior. It’s fabulous that that is acknowledged there because when I looked at the sides for that, I just thought, ‘My God, I’ve had that in my life’ and it makes me think how many other women will have experienced that. So it was really fun walking through all that bit, and especially with the Alice character. And if you look at the way Keeley influences Rebecca as well, it was beautiful to be able to feed in some of that, you know, calling each other out that Keeley and Rebecca have.

Rebecca allows herself to see the error of her ways. I don’t think she would have done that and then been able to go to Alice had she not had that from Keeley. There are so many things at play that I don’t mean to sound overly modest and humble, but I mean it … it is so unbelievably there for me to pick at and just chomp into, that I’d be an absolute f--king moron if I didn’t play all of those things in a scene. [laughs] I’ve said before as well, being a woman who’s six foot two in heels, characters don’t come along like this very often. And it’s been an absolute joy to be tested with this. I’ve never had something that’s been able to show all the vulnerabilities that we feel all the time. The fact that a woman who’s six feet two in heels doesn’t feel like she has it all together, even if she’s, you know, front-facing so you think she has, it’s just been the most immense catharsis for me. There is never one moment ever when you see something ripple over my face; it’s because I’ve literally been – they’re just nuggets everywhere for me to take up. That’s the joy of brilliant writing … and a writers’ room that was packed with real feminists, in men. The women are absolute forces of nature, but the men are utter feminists themselves. I think you can see it all over the first three seasons but even more so in this season. And it’s really wonderful to see all that come through in the writing and not in a preachy way … it really is a glorious season. >>

You said before that your character is a little bit wonky as a feminist, can you talk a bit more about that? Well, my character thinks she is a feminist and then is thinking, ‘Well, we’re not going to question that we’re going to hire a man’, which is interesting in itself. She has to kind of recalibrate a bit. And you have a daughter, Kitty; has she been an inspiration for you with this storyline? Oh my gosh, of course, of course. And the gift of my little girl has taken me somewhere with my young lady in the show, so yeah. How do you feel about the relationship between men’s and women’s football at the moment? I think the time has come for us to stand together, not stand above, but stand together. The England women’s team are massive – I’m going to swear now – f--king champions and it needs to be encouraged more and more. Grassroots, little kids, and also more than anything, young boys need to be taught that

girls are on an equal playing field with them and encourage boys to think more of girls wanting to play sports. And do you hope this will inspire more girls to take up football? Well, let’s hope so. It has to be done in schools, that’s where it needs to start. I mean, I didn’t play football at school and I know Mary Earps and Leah Williamson and Jill Scott, they all had to struggle to be recognised and taken seriously. If this encourages girls to get on the pitch or encourages girls to get on the court, then, my God, that’s what we want. Finally, what have you loved most about being a part of this special show? The thing I’ve loved the most is I’ve never had the opportunity to play something for so long before so you don’t need to signpost at any point. It’s just something that is breathing, sometimes barely breathing [laughs] in Rebecca’s case

and in Keeley’s case, very privately, they would find moments together. And it can be just a micro expression, just a flicker of something, that even if it’s one person watching by themselves in their bedroom, they’ll go, she’s reacted to that because of something that happened in season one, episode seven and I love that. That’s what I talk about, being so spoilt with the writing, but also the length of time to let something breathe and bubble. You have to just let that undulate out of you. Do you know what I mean? And none more so than this season. It’s been lovely to have that three-year break, to have actual real time to let things gestate. And also, our relationships – just because you guys haven’t seen us doesn’t mean that we haven’t always been in each other’s lives, which is wonderful as well. I’ve just found that getting back into everything with our Greyhounds and our new Lady Greyhounds has just been the most glorious, effortless time … and you will see that on camera.

LONG BEFORE A PIECE of Calleija jewellery catches the light, there is a moment when it exists only on paper. A pencil touches the page. A line is drawn, erased and drawn again. Proportions are considered, gemstones imagined, and every detail refined. What eventually becomes an extraordinary piece of jewellery can begin as nothing more than an idea – one that, through patience, skill and countless hours of design, is brought to life. For more than four decades, Calleija has been creating exceptional jewellery through a distinctive blend of artistry, craftsmanship and meaningful innovation. Today, as an international award-winning jewellery design house, that legacy continues through a talented team of designers who bring their own creative perspectives to the Calleija vision. For Jenna Dickson, Chantelle Green and Hannah Alexander, this is where their story begins. There is something exciting about seeing three women shaping the creative conversation at a jewellery house built on such a strong design legacy. Three designers, three journeys Jenna's connection with Calleija began at 19 when, while studying Fine Art with a major in Gold and Silversmithing, she joined Calleija for university work experience. After graduating, she returned to ask John for a traineeship, beginning at the bench alongside the Master Jewellers. “I have been with Calleija since 2001 and it's been an incredible journey," Jenna says. Her career has since taken her through sales, diamond grading, gemmology and even managing the London workshop, before returning to Australia to focus on jewellery design and valuation. Chantelle first discovered Calleija through the brand's 2008 catalogue. With a degree in Fine Art, she recalls being ‘blown away’ by the jewellery and the way it brought together her two passions.

“I vividly remember thinking ‘this is the most perfect blend between art and jewellery’,” she says. For Hannah, jewellery design grew from her time at the jeweller's bench. During her apprenticeship, she entered a piece into the Diamond Guild Awards, where John was one of the judges. Her piece won its category, and afterwards John told her that if she ever wanted a job, she should come and see him. “When I found myself moving to the Gold Coast, there was only one place I wanted to work,” Hannah recalls. “I have now been part of the Calleija team for six years.” Three different journeys have led them to the same place – a shared passion for creating jewellery that means something.

The influence of John Calleija Working alongside international award-winning jeweller John Calleija has shaped the designers' understanding of exceptional jewellery, drawing on more than four decades of his experience, artistry and expertise. According to Jenna, John's influence has always been about finding your own creative voice. “The most important lesson I learned from John is how vital it is to have a design language,” she says. “Your design identity is akin to a personality, it’s yours and yours alone.” For Chantelle, that philosophy comes down to the smallest details. “Every surface and angle of a creation is an opportunity for the design to be beautiful, nuanced and considered,” she says.

Ask the designers where a piece of jewellery begins, and there is no single answer. “I personally prefer to design without any specific goal in mind – I need complete freedom,” Jenna reflects. “With freedom comes more creativity.” Her inspiration might come from architecture, nature, a memory or even the music she happens to be listening to. Chantelle's process begins with exploration – a feeling, motif, impromptu sketch or extraordinary gemstone can become the starting point. Several concepts may emerge before the strongest direction is selected and refined into a detailed technical drawing. “Designs for me move into a rough concept stage where several options are explored,” she explains. “This then goes through a process of elimination and refinement until the best option or options remain.” For Hannah, inspiration can come from everyday life, nature, a dream or the moment she sees a gemstone and her mind begins racing with ideas. “The seed of an idea can appear anywhere," she says. “Then come the sketches – sometimes pages of them.” >>

And for Hannah, it is about pushing beyond convention. “John has taught me to design without limits, while also learning the importance of creating a piece that is thoughtfully designed to be beautiful from every angle,” she says. Together, Chantelle, Jenna and Hannah represent the essence of the Calleija design house; individual creative voices, shaped by experience and united by a shared vision. Each sees jewellery differently, yet every creation is brought to life through the artistry, craftsmanship and the enduring philosophy of Calleija.

Once the design has been refined, it begins another journey. The designers work closely with Calleija's Master Jewellers located at the Gold Coast workshop, whose combined experience of more than 300 years represents generations of knowledge, precision and craftsmanship. “Our incredible team works hard behind the scenes to ensure all the elements of a new design are absolutely perfect,” Hannah explains. “Our team sources gems from all around the world, we develop and workshop how a design will be made and function.” It is a collaboration between artist and artisan – between imagination and expertise. And behind every finished piece is an extraordinary amount of time, patience and care. As a team, the amount of work that goes into their pieces can be ‘mind blowing’. This spirit of creativity and collaboration comes into its own in the bespoke process. It is not just about creating something beautiful, but about creating something deeply personal and unique. "That connection makes the work so rewarding and is really our raison d’être,” Chantelle says. “It fuels my passion for design and innovation.”

Understanding what a client is drawn to – and why – is where the most interesting ideas begin. Whether it starts with an Argyle Pink Diamond™, a rare white or coloured diamond, or a gemstone with a story of its own, the design evolves and expands from there.

When a design comes to life Some designs remain particularly close to the designers' hearts. For Chantelle, one such piece is Velocità, a white gold, diamond-set collar bar that became her winning entry in the Diamond Guild Awards in the Diamonds for Men category. It was her first jewellery design competition, and she describes designing a unique piece of men's jewellery as an ‘amazing challenge’. What made the experience even more rewarding was seeing the Calleija jewellers take her concept and bring it to life. For Jenna, one of the most meaningful pieces in her career has a much deeper connection to Australia's diamond history. While studying to become a Jewellery Valuer, Jenna travelled to Kununurra and the Argyle Mine – a ‘bucket list trip’. On returning, Argyle gave Calleija the opportunity to create a design for two remarkable white diamonds cut from the same rough.

The result was Argyle Dreaming™ – a necklace incorporating pink, blue, white, champagne and yellow diamonds from the Argyle Mine, inspired by Barramundi Dreaming, a creation story belonging to the people of the East Kimberley region. “It was an incredibly special piece to design and oversee production of," Jenna says. The necklace took many months to create before travelling the world with the Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender™. It is a beautiful example of what can happen when a gemstone, a story and a designer's imagination meet. For Hannah, a recent creation was the stunning 11.38ct aquamarine and diamond ring, which she designed with inspiration drawn from the gemstone itself. The beautiful aquamarine became the starting point for a design brought to life through a thoughtful interplay of colour, proportion and intricate detail. A standout piece, the ring will feature in Calleija’s new A World Apart campaign.

After completing her medical degree at James Cook University, Dr Tegan undertook her residency at Townsville University Hospital before completing her general practice training. Her broad scope of practice allows her to support patients through many different stages of life and health. Alongside women’s and sexual health, Dr Tegan has interests in skin cancer medicine, including skin checks and excisions, as well as aesthetic medicine procedures. Outside the clinic, Dr Tegan loves making the most of the great outdoors. Fishing, camping and exploring new places are some of her favourite ways to unwind, while tennis and golf keep her active. Our week on Denarau Island became an invitation to experience two very different Hilton properties, each offering its own unique perspective on one of the South Pacific's most loved destinations. Our journey began at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji, tucked away on Sonaisali Island and reached by a short complimentary ferry crossing. Although only minutes from the mainland, the boat tide immediately creates a sense of escape... the pace softens, the crowds disappear and the resort feels wonderfully secluded. Mornings started slowly overlooking the water before exploring some of Fiji's cultural treasures, including the magnificent Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple in nearby Nadi – the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere – and the lush tropical surrounds of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, home to thousands of orchids nestled beneath towering rainforest canopies. Returning to DoubleTree each afternoon felt like coming home. Whether relaxing beside the beachfront pool, enjoying sunset drinks or simply unwinding after a day exploring, it offered an effortless balance between adventure and tranquility. What stood out most, however, was the genuine warmth of the team. Jonez on Ephraim owner-chef, Gary Jones, embraces his life-long passion for food. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE CHEFS WORK IN ALL DIFFERENT WAYS … for some it’s a job, and for others a passion. Even more blessed is the person who not only loves being a chef, but they see food as their calling. Their life is completely enmeshed in their work, their enthusiasm evident in how they perform their role, and in the meals they bring to the table. Working with food gives them purpose, meaning and fulfillment. Gary Jones, the popular owner-chef of Jonez on Ephraim, has been a chef for 56 of his 70 years and hopes to continue for many more. “All my life has been about food,” Gary tells me. “I am passionate about it and the routine of my life is based around it. “I have never wanted to do anything else.” It’s Monday morning, and even though Jonez on Ephraim does not open that night, Gary has been here from 7am creating the extras that help make his food so special, such as handmade pastries, pastas, stocks, brioche and chocolate. He follows the same routine every day, through rain and sunshine, including during lockdown.

Even more extraordinary is the fact that Gary has not had a day off sick since 1978. The son of a Yorkshire coal miner, Gary’s passion originates from his own humble family table in the house where he grew up ... his mother and grandmother preparing wholesome, homecooked food using vegetables, rabbits and chickens from their rambling garden, their meals cooked in an open coal-fired stove. At 14, Gary began work in the kitchen of the local pub, moving to Claridge’s Hotel in London at 17 to complete his chef apprenticeship. He gained inspiration from senior chefs along the way, most notably when he moved to France to work. “I have learned from the best, absorbed so much, and seen many changes the hospitality industry,” he explains. “I gained my passion from working under great chefs in Michelin star restaurants, savouring the taste of the wild, fresh produce from the earth and sea when it came in, learning French techniques of cooking in culinary centres like Lyons and St Tropez.

“I have experienced changes to food culture through my career, from the vibrant freshness of Paul Bocuse’s nouvelle cuisine of the late 1970s to a more scientific approach and embracing of international flavours of the 1990s. “Now it’s a mixture of everything.” So, how has Gary found the inspiration to keep creating through changing trends, the ups and downs of the pandemic and beyond? "Much of the credit has to go to my wife, Belinda," he admits. "We have been married over 40 years and I rely on her help and support to get through. "Plus, I'm over trying to be fashionable,” Gary adds with a laugh. “I go back and try to replicate the exact flavours of dishes such as bouillabaisse or saucisson in brioche that I hold in my memory. “I look at traditional dishes in magazines, experiment with them and make small changes to ingredients. "When Belinda and I travel we dine out in capital cities, and I come back with ideas and tweaks I could make to dishes.

“I also keep focused and take time for ideas to brew ... but you must have good foundations first,” he adds. “Good French technique and knowledge of Japanese cuisine, plus great Italian pasta stands you in good stead. “The freshest seafood from Australia and New Zealand prepared simply shows off the quality of the produce. “We need to have great food to bring people back to restaurants, otherwise we won’t survive." Gary also explains that Australia has a different hospitality structure to both the US and the UK. “We need to pay superannuation, wages, suppliers etc. first before we do anything else, running a tight operation with minimal waste. “Covid presented hospitality with a challenge and taught us to think outside the square, to adapt to survive, to create takeaway dishes that would service our clientele.” Gary talks of the necessity of the owner being fully present and committed to service, how a healthy lifestyle and a sound routine help maintain focus, as well as the ethical integrity of how you run your operation. “I feel disappointed in owners who go broke and don’t pay their bills," he says. “No business goes broke overnight ... flexibility and adaptability help you survive. “If you can’t go into your kitchen and do the dishes, then you shouldn’t be running a restaurant,” he adds. “Why bother owning a restaurant if you aren’t willing to get in and help your staff? “You need to manage your business well so that when you face a challenge, you can adapt and make it work.” Gary also maintains that the hospitality industry in Australia has many advantages. “People go out a lot, and they eat a wide variety of foods,” he says. “We are open to many cultural influences, making our food scene one big melting pot. “Diversity also acts as a crucible for experimentation with food, providing a ‘Wow’ factor in restaurant food, but it’s labour intensive and comes at a cost. “You need strong financial and culinary foundations underneath the glamour.” Though humble about his success, Gary has gained recognition for his achievements in the industry including keeping a Michelin star at Walton’s Restaurant, Knightsbridge in London in 1987, and being awarded Gourmet Traveller’s Restaurant of the Year 1994 for his restaurant San Lorenzo, Perth. After looking back on his career highlights – I ask Gary about his future plans. “The Olympic Games [Brisbane 2032] will be my last big meal,” he replies. “Judging by the incredible turnover in the Sydney Games [2000], the Brisbane Olympics will be a game changer; a huge opportunity that we need to prepare for. “Australia will get international attention from the Games, then investment will follow. “We need to get ready, with transportation, accommodation, staffing, quality of service and food meeting the expectations of international guests. “People will stay here, eat here, play here and spend money here so we need to deliver. “I want to be a part of it, to soak up the ambience of it. “We’re hosting this once-in-a-lifetime event, so we should enjoy it. “Until then, I want to keep cooking, doing service, meeting customers … it keeps my brain going. "It's what I love. It’s my life,” he adds, smiling.

Chinese car a Swedish (Pole) Star THE POLESTAR 5 will change your mind about Chinese cars … if you accept it is Chinese, that is. The 5 is a striking-looking GT-style 4-seater that is due in Australian showrooms about now. Polestar is majority-owned by Chinese brand Geely, but clearly much of its design influence comes from minority owner Volvo, which is itself Geely-owned. Company headquarters are in Sweden, with Volvo, and this Polestar 5 was designed in the United Kingdom ... cars are made in China. The make was only founded in 2017 and has been in Australia for five years, now offering Polestar 2, 3, 4, and 5 models priced from $66,400 to $193,000. I viewed the flagship Polestar 5 during a recent pre-sale Australian tour. It’s spectacularly sleek outside, Swedish-sumptuous inside and unlike any other Chinese car on sale. How buyers respond to a car from China pushing $200,000 on-road remains to be seen.

Luce already world’s most expensive new car THE RELEASE OF THE LUCE, Ferrari’s first electric car covered in the last issue, sparked global outrage among traditional sports car fans, but one enthusiast found it irresistible. American billionaire Dr Herbert Wertheim bought the first production example for $US40 million. The sale by RM Sotheby’s during the recent Pebble Beach concours week in California, was said to be the most expensive for a new car at public auction. Meanwhile, opinions about the Luce have softened, with an immediate sell-out of the first year’s stock and early reviewers praising its refined performance and sophisticated design by Australian Marc Newson.

THE NOOSA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE returned in award-winning style for its fourth edition, with 50 fabulous exhibits confirming south-east Queensland as a hub for some of the world’s most exclusive automobiles. A huge crowd packed Hastings Street to see classic concours entries worth millions of dollars, alongside a glittering display of modern supercars. The Best in Show award was won by a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe with its distinctive ‘gullwing’ doors and a restoration completed recently by Queensland’s Sleeping Beauties workshop. However, the crowd-favourite People’s Choice was a rare 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage, the Bond-style coupe appearing in metallic ‘mink’ paintwork with Connolly red leather upholstery after a ground-up restoration from a barn-find discovery. It was entered by Supercars team owner Charlie Schwerkolt.

Amazon makes a ute-turn AUSSIES HAD CULT-ISH enthusiasm for the Subaru Brumby, Datsun 1200 and Proton Jumbuck light utes a few decades ago before they were steamrollered by the behemoth load-carriers we favour today. Well, stand by for a comeback. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has backed the recent American launch of the Slate Truck, a promising return to bare-bones practicality with a modern touch. Selling from around $A36,000, the small Slate ute is electric and its basic specifications include wind-up windows and no radio. The battery gives a claimed driving range of 330kms and the Slate is claimed to carry a 700kg payload or tow 900kg. If a right-hand drive Slate makes it to Australia, sold on-line through Amazon, it’ll answer the dreams of thousands of farmers, tradies and recreational users.

I HAVE COMMENTED several times already about the trend to internet-connected cars and how they offer new ways for manufacturers to exploit drivers. Inevitably this is progressing from software upgrades and data collection to more commercial opportunities: i.e., advertising. BMW has angered American customers with a pop-up ad on their cars’ screens that promoted the brand’s involvement with a new Spider-Man movie. Website TechRadar reported BMW vehicles appeared in product placement throughout the super-hero film, then BMW leveraged this by pushing ‘themed animations and messages’ on to the infotainment systems of connected vehicles. TechRadar said tapping a screen banner triggered a full-screen commercial that also took over the car's audio system and ambient lighting. BMW called it a ‘themed experience’, not an advertisement. It was noted that BMW Australia did not participate in the campaign.

THE FIRST QUESTION that arises upon entering the Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy is, why buy European? The stylish and luxurious interior of this large Korean SUV is as impressive as many German rivals that cost more than this $89,900 model. The Palisade’s appeal should be evident immediately to large families (seven - or eight-seat versions are available) or to corporate users such as luxury hire car operators, corporate chauffeurs or hotels. It sits at the top of Hyundai’s SUV range as a more car-like alternative to its Kia Carnival sibling, which is a genuine people-mover. In styling terms, the Palisade will never be a German alternative, but it’s good-looking; and its bold square-ish body has an imposing American-style presence. At 2.3 tonnes including its big self-charging hybrid battery, the Palisade still pushes along comfortably with a 2.5 litre, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Follow their footsteps For Stuart and Susie Jones, walking the Camino de Santiago was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM LET ME START BY SAYING that this is not my story to tell. And it is not one that is easy to capture in words and images. But it is full of adventure, determination, courage, friendship and walking … lots and lots of walking. I’m talking, of course, about the life-changing and extremely daunting Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trek. Two very good friends of mine, Stuart and Susie Jones, have recently completed this ‘bucket list’ journey, following a network of ancient trails through France and Spain. “We knew it would be challenging but the friendships we made along the way and the sense of achievement when we finished were so much more than we expected. “From beginning to end, It was an amazing experience,” the pair said. >>

Also known as the Way of St. James, there are 12 main routes to choose from, ranging from 90 km to 1,800 km. Stuart and Susie decided on the Camino Francés, an 800-kilometre trek commencing in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France and finishing, as they all do, in Santiago de Compostela, Northern Spain. (I visited this spiritual city several years ago and was visibly moved watching the relief and the elation of the pilgrims as they completed their quest so I can only imagine how rewarding it would be to actually undertake the feat.) For both Stuart and Susie, the Camino proved to be so much more than simply a walk – it was an experience that challenged them physically but gave them something special in return. Often covering up to 35 kilometres a day, the Currumbin couple experienced periods of deep reflection, deep connections and a personal sense of achievement that can never be diminished. But be warned, this is not a pilgrimage for the faint hearted or one you can undertake on a whim. The pair spent months trekking through the Gold Coast hinterland, pounding the local beaches, working on their fitness and generally preparing their minds and bodies for the arduous 34-day journey. “We wanted to embrace the true essence of the Camino and disconnect from technology as much as possible,” Stuart explains. “We both have jobs, family commitments and a busy lifestyle at home, so it was nice to be able to unplug and just go with the flow for a few weeks.” Rather than using luggage transfers, Stuart and Susie sought the full experience of being pilgrims – carrying everything they needed, staying in albergues, monasteries and churches – some communal and some privately owned – and accepting whatever each day brought. "There was also something incredibly special about the simplicity of life on the Camino," they explain. "The solitude when walking alone with your thoughts. The camaraderie that developed with fellow pilgrims. The landscape completing changing every day. "Tiny villages, ancient bridges, beautiful old churches, magnificent cathedrals and historic cities all became part of the journey. "And, perhaps most importantly, the people you meet along the way." By its very definition the Camino takes its nomads on a roundabout journey, travelling through picturesque mountains, endless plains, narrow roads and more well-worn paths. It also throws many challenges in their way, including, in one very daunting moment for Stuart … losing his hiking boots. “Day one started with my shoes accidentally being taken by someone else so I had to walk for a few days in a pair that didn’t fit until we got to Pamplona and I could buy new ones,” he says. Although it may have been an inconvenience at the time, looking back it was a small price to pay for memories that will have such a poignant impact on your life for many years to come. “There was a story doing the rounds about a tall Korean man who had my shoes and at one stage we met a girl from Kansas who was telling us that ‘some Aussie bloke is walking the Camino in shoes half a size too small’ … she couldn’t believe it when she realised she was actually talking to the man himself – ‘The Shoe Guy’.” It was these types of encounters that allowed the couple to forge strong bonds with their fellow travellers and to continue to reach outside their comfort zone day after day, mile after mile. For Stuart and Susie, after 31 years of marriage, the journey also offered something they knew it would provide – the rare opportunity to step away from their daily demands, without the distractions and routines of everyday life. While their three adult children remained at home, the Camino gave the couple precious time to reconnect not only with each other, but with themselves and with the world around them.

What surprised Stuart most was the depth of the connections they made along the way. People who were complete strangers could become part of your journey within hours. A conversation over a coffee, sharing a meal, walking together for a few kilometres or simply offering a word of encouragement could seem insignificant at the time, yet somehow leave a lasting impression. “The Camino has a strange way of reminding you that the little things are often the big things,” Stuart says. Looking back, Stuart believes it was one of the greatest experiences of his life. “It wasn’t just the number of kilometres, the mountains, the blisters or the long days. “It was the people we met, the stories we shared, the places we passed through and the memories we created together.” And after over three decades of marriage, walking more than 800 kilometres side by side with his wife left Stuart with a simple realisation. “Sometimes the greatest journeys aren’t about where you are going – they’re about who walks besides you, and the people you meet along the way.” While there are countless other tales to share, as I mentioned earlier, this is not my story, so I want to give the last word to Susie, who walked the path in honour of her mother, who sadly passed away late last year. A devout Catholic, she had always dreamed of completing the Camino de Santiago and, while Susie was growing up, often spoke to her about the meaning of the pilgrimage and what it represented. Walking the Camino was therefore not only a personal journey for Susie, but a way of honouring her mother and fulfilling, in some small way, a dream they had shared. “We did it Mama and we are stronger now,” she says. “Buen Camino, you have changed my heart forever.” >>

18 May 2026 Day 8/9 of the Camino de Santiago and we are starting to feel like turtles – carrying our entire lives on our backs while slowly meandering down tiny country roads across Spain. The daily routine now consists of walking for a few hours, dramatically discussing muscle pain, then immediately rewarding ourselves with coffee, pastries, beer or whatever is closest at the next café, bar or restaurant. At this point we are halfway between pilgrims and a travelling food and wine tour that walks between venues.

21 May 2026 Day 10, 11 and 12 of the Camino. We’ve reached peak Camino efficiency: coffee, walk, coffee, eat, walk, laugh, walk, wine … The scenery is stunning, the company is brilliant and nobody judges you for having a beer before noon because apparently it is ‘part of the culture’. I could get used to this pilgrim lifestyle.

27 May 2026 Officially past the halfway point with 370-odd kilometres to go. Small blisters … big laughs … ice cold beer … red wine … crunching gravel under our boots for mile after mile … endless skies … good company … deep conversations. The days somehow blur together into a perfect routine of walking, eating, drinking and pretending we know exactly where we are going. Have the basic Spanish vocab sorted for coffee and afternoon drinks … priorities. Ordering food is more a point and nod situation.

8 June 2026 The Meseta is behind us and the mountains are back, which suits me just fine. We’ve entered the final 100km and, strangely, everything feels relaxed. The days have settled into a simple peaceful rhythm of walking, chatting or just being lost in your thoughts. The biggest surprise has been the people. Our Camino family has shared every step, meal and bottle of wine along the way. It’s hard to believe we’ll be saying goodbye in just a few days. The Camino really does mess with your sense of distance – 100 km used to sound ridiculous, now it seems like walking to the corner shop.

12 June 2026 Camino complete. Today we walked into Santiago, received our official pilgrim certificates, attended the Pilgrim Mass and were lucky enough to witness the magnificent Botafumeiro swinging through the cathedral. A fitting end to an unforgettable 34-day journey. Over the past month we’ve crossed mountains, open fields, forests and everything in between but the real highlight has been the people. Thank you to everyone who shared a meal, a laugh, a story, a bottle of wine or a few kilometres of conversation. Some friendships will last a lifetime, others only a few days. The Camino is a lot like life, some people walk beside you for the whole journey, others only for a short stretch. Either way, enjoy the moments you share. The Camino may be finished but the memories and friendships will walk with us for a very long time.

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN we just need to get away; when our bodies are longing for a break from routine, when we crave some ‘me’ time or new experiences. However, the thought of a long-haul flight leaves us anxious (even before we start talking about the planning and the cost). That’s when it’s time for a short holiday close to home, maybe even in our own city. The rise of the ‘staycation’ is a revolution in how we view leisure time, providing many of the mental and physical benefits of a traditional vacation without the price tag, stress and time involved when travelling overseas. The Gold Coast is a well-known destination for world travellers. Its 70 kilometres of sandy beaches and rolling surf, theme parks and fabulous fresh Henschke food attract about 15 million visitors annually.

Some tourists travel thousands of kilometres to relax, enjoy outdoor adventures or attend cultural events in our city. For many people, the worst thing about travel is the journey itself. The complications begin when we try to clear several weeks of work to make the most of our long-haul flight. On the other hand, by choosing to take a short break close to home we can reduce our stress levels and avoid airport queues, uncomfortable flights, language barriers and complicated trip logistics. In light of this, we recently decided to take an overnight break at the Hilton Surfers Paradise, one of the Gold Coast’s most luxurious hotels and apartment complexes. Located on Orchid Avenue, this hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of town.

It is a short walk from the famous surf beach, shopping, dining and entertainment, precincts and within a block of the G:Link tram, which can take us from Helensvale to Burleigh Beach. We arrived at the Hilton in no time at all, and entered our one-bedroom suite, settled in and relaxed. Through floor to ceiling glass, we could see from the skyline of Surfers Paradise through to the hinterland, with glimpses of the ocean a block away. There was little preparation for this staycation. Forget months researching and planning, booking flights, hotels and attractions. Our accommodation was booked in just a couple of minutes, a few things thrown in an overnight bag and we arrived relaxed, ready to spend time together.

Though we could have explored further, it was cool outside so we just took a short walk before returning to the hotel – and with room service available we didn’t even need to leave our suite again. For those looking to explore further there was a compendium of activities, linked to a QR code in our room, including nearby attractions, local events and hotel services. Head to the hotel’s Deck Bar for poolside cocktails, or book into the relaxing eforea spa, which offers rejuvenating treatments for the face and body. There are four pools, a spa, a sauna, two fitness centres, a mini cinema and an Executive Lounge in the hotel, so there’s no need to even leave the premises. Ms Margot’s Bar & Eats, in the foyer area of the hotel, offers coffee, breakfast and all-day tapas-style dining, drinks and signature cocktails overlooking the street. We enjoyed a high tea here, facing out to the parade of passersby on Orchid Avenue. The three-tier high tea stand includes both savoury and sweet treats, from Peking duck spring rolls to fresh scones with jam and cream and gourmet chocolate bon bons. We settled for barista coffee, which is included, noting that bottomless sparkling wine is available for an extra charge. Following this special treat, we spent the afternoon relaxing in our room, taking a walk to Surfers Paradise beach before dinner.

Just as our short break fitted us, others can tailor a staycation to suit themselves. It doesn’t matter whether you focus on your own wellness, physical or mental health, or check out your area according to your interests and priorities, the secret is to be as active (or inactive) as you like … this is your time. As locals living at the foot of the hinterland, we don’t go to Surfers Paradise very often. This staycation allowed us to check out the beachside locale while minimising our carbon footprint and investing money in the local community. Our hotel room offered serenity and quietness away from our hectic life. It was also a great opportunity to disconnect from technology, recharge, reconnect and make a fresh start. The mini-getaway also focused our attention on ourselves, the real reason why we were taking a holiday in the first place. Even a couple of days away gave us the chance to take a break from routine. We relaxed without feeling locked into a self-imposed packed itinerary, as we often do on trips and cruises. Priorities are different on a staycation. You can turn the focus on you rather than on the external environment. Without the costs associated with long haul holiday travel (such as visas, baggage fees, flights and insurance) we have more money and time to spend on ourselves.

We stayed in house for our meals, dining in Catch Restaurant, the hotel’s signature eatery. It’s a sedate environment serving a classic menu, the focal point of its sustainable seafood and steak offerings being a seafood platter for two. We ordered local oysters and prawns followed by a West Australian half Lobster Thermidor, and a 300g Wagyu rump MBS7+ accompanied by a potato galette and red wine jus. It was a great steak, cooked – rare as requested – to perfection. We indulged in the hotel’s signature buffet breakfast, served daily at Catch Restaurant. It carries extensive options, from hot dishes to freshly made pancakes, muffins and breads. For me, there’s no going past freshly cut fruit and berries with yoghurt to start the day. With an 11am checkout, there’s no rush to leave. We could take our time and enjoy a final walk before heading home. Our staycation at the Hilton Surfers Paradise provided us with a stress-free way to take a break from routine, unwind and recharge without travelling too far. We may not have been amazed by wonders of architecture or ancient culture, but sometimes the little, achievable joys of life are exactly what we need. Palm Court is the place to be for trivia, a pre-dinner drink or high tea. Located forward on deck 12, you are welcomed into a light and open space with some of the best views on the ship. I always choose a window seat when flying as you get the best views of countryside, particularly before landing.

I always carry a good book on flights.

How has technology changed the way we travel today? Technology has definitely improved the way we travel. The Internet allows us to research destinations and the wonderful opportunities they offer.

What is your favourite iconic landmark?

I would have to say the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Its famous wrought iron lattice tower is incredible … and enjoying lunch or dinner halfway up is superb.

Always travel with a reputable agent or tour group therefore knowing you will be safe in any circumstance.

What is one destination that everyone should see in their lifetime? Everyone should visit Paris and the surrounding Champagne country when possible.

My favourite hotel is the Westminster Paris. Comfortable spacious rooms and walking distance to almost everything.

Car, coach, plane or ship?

I like travelling on small group ships, particularly luxury barges that cruise canals etc.

What is your favourite Australian destination?

My favourite destination in Australia is Orpheus Island which offers an all-inclusive luxury hideaway on the Great Barrier Reef housing up to only 30 guests.

What have you bought on your travels that you really enjoy?

I purchased the softest Mongolian cashmere sweater in Paris. Many folks ask me where I found it every time I wear it.

THE MASSIVE DISRUPTION to the property market since the May Federal Budget is undeniable, but amid the haze that has sidelined homebuyers and investors in recent months the fall in prices hasn’t shifted the dial for renters. Reports of a slowdown in buyer activity nationally since the Federal Budget have varied with some markets hit harder than others. Future price fall predictions also vary wildly, with the reality being that analysts are unable to agree on where the bottom lies and when the market will return to growth. This matters because a drop in household wealth due to falling house prices affects consumer sentiment and economic activity more broadly. But while the trend during this lull is creating more of a buyer’s market, for tenants it is still a landlord’s market as housing supply constraints persist and show no signs of waning.

Recent data from Domain reveal the capitals saw an acceleration of rental price increases in the June quarter with Sydney posting its strongest quarter in four years. Sydney rents were up $50 for the June quarter to a record $850 a week, followed by Darwin which was up $40 to $760 and Brisbane, up $20 to $700. That comes as Domain found Sydney house prices in the June quarter fell 2.9 per cent to a median of $1.35 million, while in Darwin prices rose 2.8 per cent to $491,302 and Brisbane edged up just 0.1 per cent to $947,261. Melbourne’s median fell 2.5 per cent to $898,875, with house prices remaining flat for the previous 12 months, but rents still managed to increase by $5 a week to $600 in the June quarter – up 1.7 per cent for the year in Australia’s softest capital city market.

House price weakness that emerged in Sydney and Melbourne following last year’s interest rate increases accelerated in the aftermath of the Federal Budget and clear evidence of that came with the Commonwealth Bank’s full-year profit result released in August. Australia’s largest home lender revealed in its 2025-26 annual results that loan applications had fallen 15 per cent since May, with the blame levelled at higher interest rates, the Federal Budget changes and tighter lending rule assessments. The drop was also echoed by Westpac which reported a 20 per cent fall in loan applications since May and NAB’s 15 per cent fall since March. Weaker consumer sentiment and buyer uncertainty over where the market is headed have amplified the pain in Sydney and Melbourne. This has even affected the high-demand markets of Brisbane and Adelaide where monthly negative growth emerged in July. However, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) offered a sobering assessment of a new emerging dynamic for the property market in its quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy released in August, and it’s probably not good news again for renters.

While the headlines from the August statement focused on a potential pause to increasing the official cash rate for the remainder of the year, the RBA warned that the tax changes are likely to weaken the incentive to build new homes by driving a sharper decline in established property prices. A key reason for this is the high cost of construction as the broader market downturn reduces the financial incentive for developers to commit to new residential buildings. “Housing prices are assumed to continue to decline gradually for a period, reflecting the tightening in monetary policy earlier in the year, tax policy changes and the general economic environment,” says the RBA. “Lower housing prices weigh on household consumption by reducing household net wealth and spending related to housing turnover. “Weaker housing prices also reduce the incentive to build new homes, although this channel is expected to be smaller than it has been historically given the large pipeline of work yet to be done.” Effectively, the RBA estimates that the changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax will worsen the property market’s supply situation. That may also be bad news for first-home buyers who are more likely to buy into an apartment project or house-and-land subdivision due to a raft

of state and federal financial incentives that direct them to new builds. Anecdotal evidence shows that the current price falls are being felt most at the top end of the market, rather than the affordable sector, which skews the overall price fall statistics. Similar evidence shows that investors looking for better returns are turning to cheaper existing dwellings that may be cashflow positive, supported by rising rental rates, or affordable new homes to take advantage of negative gearing incentives. That puts them head-to-head in the market with first-home buyers. The problem is that the national build-to-sell pipeline was already falling well short of demand before the latest Budget changes. The restriction now in effect on self-managed super funds (SMSF) to borrow for property investment appears set to exacerbate this problem. The federal government’s own target to build 1.2 million homes between July 2024 and June 2029 is currently running about 112,000 homes short of trend. An August report released by property advisory and research firm Charter Keck Cramer revealed an annual apartment shortfall of between 13,000 and 21,000 dwellings across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra in the past six months, with the Gold Coast the only major market forecast to build enough to meet demand.

The report also points out that the new SMSF rules put a significant amount of future apartment supply at risk of not being delivered. Charter Keck Cramer’s State of the Market report for the first half of 2026 warns that the tax changes will not lead to a ‘one for one’ replacement of investors moving from established into new stock. “Investors will now fully reconsider all investment decisions including moving into other asset classes,” says the report. “Secondly, there is now a disincentive for new stock, which loses the new dwelling tax benefits upon resale, and which the market will need to price in.” The Charter Keck Cramer report is critical of the SMSF changes, arguing they are based on ‘incomplete data and a fundamental lack of understanding of the new housing market’. “Discussions with our residential valuers shows that SMSF investors make up around 20 to 30 per cent of off the plan buyers of buildto-sell apartments in Melbourne or Brisbane and the buyer pool has now disappeared,” it says. “The impact of these changes will be that build-to-sell apartment supply decreases even further. “This will lead to further rent and also price increases and will have the opposite impact to what the government is trying to achieve.”
