I,SPY

British actor Tom Hiddleston returns to the role of Jonathan Pine for the second season of acclaimed spy-thriller, The Night Manager.

WORDS LUCY ALLEN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

TOM HIDDLESTON IS BACK AS The Night Manager for a second season, almost ten years after the highly acclaimed first season aired.

Based on John le Carré’s iconic novel, the series once again plunges Jonathan Pine [Hiddleston] into a high-stakes world of espionage, shifting allegiances, and moral risk – this time stretching from London to Colombia, where nothing is quite what it seems.

In this interview, the British actor talks about the making of the new season, the challenge of returning to a beloved character and the art of adapting le Carré’s razor-sharp storytelling for the screen.

The Night Manager is back. Why do you think it took this long?

It’s a really interesting story, actually.

We made the first one knowing full well that John le Carré had written a novel called ‘The Night Manager’ in 1993 and he had granted his consent for us to adapt it.

And as we were making it, there were no plans to develop a second season.

We opened The Night Manager at the Berlin Film Festival in 2016 and it was an extraordinary night.

It was the first time we had presented anything to a viewing public who were not part of the creation of the show.

And all of us were there, Susanne Bier, the director, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman, Stephen Garrett, Simon Cornwell, Stephen Cornwell, who are le Carré’s sons, who produced The Night Manager, and le Carré himself.

We went back to the hotel afterwards excited and thrilled with how it had been received.

We sat down and le Carré lent across the table with a twinkle in his eye and said, ‘perhaps we might make some more’ and we all thought, ‘OK, but there’s no more novel. There’s no second book’.

So there began a process of beginning to roll our sleeves up and think about how we might go about it.

He had many ideas but what was complex about it was that world events were moving faster than the process of development.

And we all felt The Night Manager was resonant with the contemporary world, that you could feel that the world we all live in was the world they inhabit.

Then what happened is, we went through the pandemic and David Cornwell (John le Carré’s real name is David Cornwell), he and his wife got rather ill and sadly died in 2020.

But le Carré had communicated his profound trust in his sons and a committed belief that there should be more ‘Night Manager’ before he died.

I was at the memorial service, an extraordinary service in his remembrance, and his sons, Simon and Stephen, at that, it felt completely appropriate, said, ‘You know, Dad loved the show and he would love for us to do more so let’s keep talking’.

It was an amazing legacy for him to leave all of us, I suppose, a tiny part of his extraordinary legacy.

Anyway, not long after David Farr, our great screenwriter, had a dream … genuinely … and it was basically a dream about Teddy, Teddy Dos Santos, played by the great Diego Calva and where he places himself in the story.

So he wrote to Simon and Stephen and said, ‘I’ve had this idea and it’s about going back to Colombia,’ which is where the novel is set.

He wrote to me and it became a really exciting idea so we started to develop it. >>

It takes time to develop six hours of series and to cut a long story short, we knew we wanted to meet the bar and clear it.

We set a high standard for ourselves … if we’re going to go again, it had to be better.

It had to be bigger, braver, bolder, deeper.

We had to risk more. It had to cost more –in terms of spirit.

The new season is grounded in a different time. Who has changed more in the past 10 years, your character Jonathan Pine or Tom Hiddleston?

Oh, I don’t know, probably Tom Hiddleston I would think.

But then that’s the great thing about the new series, the more we realised it would be 10 years, the more we lent into it.

They’ve been 10 extraordinarily complex years in the world.

So much has happened and we’ve all been through them.

The world in some senses is more fragmented and uncertain – or perhaps that’s just a point of view – but there have been so many political changes, cultural changes, environmental changes, untold international conflict, a pandemic.

And we kept imagining if you work at the centre of the intelligence community, those 10 years are going to have been complex.

I love the idea that Jonathan Pine, at the end of season one, a fire has been ignited in his heart by Angela Burr, played by Olivia Colman … that fire will not be extinguished until the end of his lifetime.

And he’s seen behind the curtain.

He’s a field agent now for the intelligence services, for MI6, and there’s no going back.

So there’s a desire to understand the world as it really is, not the world as it appears to be.

There’s that amazing line, ‘A man’s life expands in direct proportion to how much truth he can stand’.

And Pine wants to know the truth.

That’s a great thing I admire about him, which is, you know, many of us probably would be happy not knowing all the truth.

Going way back when you were first offered this role, did you ever think, ‘is this going to help or hinder my James Bond chances?’ – because you were on that list.

Honestly, at the time, I read the script and I was like, ‘I’ve never played a part like this before’.

And it sounds crazy, but I thought, ‘I know how to do this.’

It’s interesting because, at that time in my life, I hadn’t done much contemporary work, as in, I hadn’t done lots of stories set in the contemporary world.

I’d done a lot of period, a lot of elevated genre stuff.

And the fact that this was contemporary and was a thriller, but I just understood it.

I think it was the character himself, the tension between his exterior and his interior, as presented to me in that first episode of the first season.

On the surface, immaculate, charming, collected, capable, calm, like all great hoteliers, a great actor.

So think about the next time you’re staying in a hotel. [laughs]

But also, he’d been a British soldier in the army so there’s this tension between on the exterior, the still water, a kind of effortlessness and immaculate, pristine face and inside a

heart that’s on fire with sort of moral courage and private vulnerability and solitude and pain and trauma.

The way le Carré described him was that he was, ‘The son of a cancer-ridden German beauty and a British Sergeant killed in one of his country’s many post-colonial wars. A graduate of a rainy archipelago of orphanages, foster homes and cadet units. A sometime army wolf child with an even rainier unit in Northern Ireland. A caterer, chef, hotelier, itinerant, collector of other people’s languages, perpetual escapee from emotional entanglement, self-exiled creature of the night and sailor without a destination’.

Who doesn’t want to play that guy? [laughs] What an extraordinary description. That’s chapter three of the novel.

It's amazing you can remember all that.

Obviously, that’s like stencilled into my brain because those phrases are so extraordinary, ‘a collector of other people’s languages’ literally, but metaphorically, you know, someone who speaks Arabic, speaks French, speaks German, speaks Spanish, is able to move between, to code switch, he’s a chameleon.

Someone very skilled at playing other people.

He’s inventing a persona, Matthew Ellis – and Matthew Ellis is also kind of the other side of Jonathan Pine.

He’s expensive. He’s cavalier. He’s reckless and careless and has money to burn and money to waste.

That sort of exercises something in Pine that doesn’t get exercised.

But this ease between things, I think le Carré was fascinated by that, he was fascinated by the masks we wear.

And also in spy thrillers, spies have to pretend to be other people to extract information, they have to seduce in order to betray, they have to lie to get to the truth.

And in so doing, it’s easy to get lost in the maze.

So your performance has to be perfect, way more perfect than a professional actor, because one slip up and you’re a dead man.

I suppose le Carré is asking, ‘Is there a centre to a human being? Or are we just roles that we play?’ You know?

That’s what that passage speaks to ‘a collector of other people’s languages, an escapee from emotional entanglement’.

Emotional entanglement, attachment – I need those things.

I need attachments and I hold them dear.

They tether me to my very ordinary reality, which I cherish and which I love.

So I know who I am, because of my attachments in the world, you know, human relationships with real human beings who have real names – a spy has none of that.

No relationships, no attachments. >>

Few quick questions, do you prefer tv, film acting or stage acting?

All three. There’s no preference.

Honestly, I feel so grateful that I’ve been allowed to do all three.

I think they all keep me honest as an actor.

You know, the camera captures the truth and it has an extraordinary acuity.

It’s so sharp. You can’t lie in front of the camera so that keeps you honest.

But also, you can’t lie in front of a live audience. I love the precision of acting for camera … but I also deeply love the craft of playing the entire story from beginning to end, night after night, and the iterative process of refinement that happens.

You know, you do 90 performances or 150 performances, or actually, I think the longest run of anything I’ve ever done was Betrayal, we did 270 performances.

Betrayal by Harold Pinter is a great play and the reason I know it’s a great play is at performance 270, I was still discovering things about the play, that it was still revealing itself to me.

You talked before about the masks that we all adopt. Do you ever adopt the mask of a character out in the real world? Would you take Jonathan Pine or Loki into Starbucks with you?

Yeah, I don’t know if I’d get away with it.

This is ridiculous, but sometimes people will say, like, I’m at the gas station, right? I’m filling up the car and it’s late and the context is entirely normal, right?

I’ll go and I’ll pay for the thing and I’ll get a snack or whatever and bottle of water and the guy behind the counter will go, ‘Has anyone ever told you you look just like Tom Hiddleston?’

And I go, ‘Yeah, I get that all the time. It’s funny, you’re not the first person to say this’.

They’re like, ‘Am I not the first person to say that?’ and I reply ‘Yeah people do say that’.

Then eventually they say, ‘Are you?’ And I go, ‘No, but people say I do’ … it’s a ridiculous game.

You should be like, ‘I’m way taller than him’?

I should say that. [Laughs]

But to be serious, what’s interesting is that the point you’re bringing up is like, you know, I think probably the privilege I feel I’m afforded as an actor, is that I get to play all of these people.

And that I get to explore myself in all of them.

But it’s an imagined reality so the boundaries feel very safe.

Of course, there are aspects of myself in all these characters, otherwise I couldn’t do it.

Or if they’re not aspects of myself, I’m stretching myself with imagination to get there.

And I find it such an interesting thing to reflect on occasionally, which is that there’s that phrase, ‘The body keeps the score’, you know?

Sometimes it’s a discipline to remind myself that the tears I shed belong to me, they’re my tears, but they are the characters’ imagined tears, if that makes sense.

Or if a character is charming, or openhearted or generous – that’s my heart, that’s my generosity, that’s my charm.

If a character is angry, that’s my anger.

It’s not real, it’s not based in reality, it’s a response to something imagined.

A character like Pine, for example, I find his curiosity is mine.

His desire to understand the world as it really is, not the world as it appears to be, is something I share with him, but I don’t have his resources or his competence.

So the privilege I feel as an actor is that I get to explore the breadth and range of the experience of being alive.

Hopefully that exploration is something that resonates for the audience, that we all, through art and through stories, explore the breadth and range and the experience of being alive.

That’s why it matters.

It’s why it has always mattered to me as a member of the audience.

I feel other artists and other actors have done that on my behalf and shown me facets of humanity that I didn’t know existed or told me stories about the world and about us as a people, as human beings, that I didn’t know or understand.

Yeah, it’s like the masks in a way, it’s like, not to get too overly sincere, it’s the E.M. Forster quotation, when he talks about connection, ‘That stories that emerge from human imagination, carry the power of connection, only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted and seen at their height’.

I think I’m paraphrasing, but the sense of connection is the only reason for doing anything. And stories connect you to other human beings.

Home GROWN

Justin Armsden’s journalism career has taken him from the Gold Coast, all around the world, and back again.

SET AGAINST THE ROLLING HILLS of Tuscany Italy, it was an immense presence, more captivating than a superyacht moored at Sanctuary Cove Marina.

The Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe combined grunt and grace in one large, shiny package: every line and detail meticulously crafted, every element radiating an inspiring sense of design, propelled with effortless poise by the strength of its V12 engine.

I felt a surge of anticipation.

I was about to experience its splendour firsthand, entrusted with the enviable task of reviewing the Drophead for CNN’s luxury feature show, The Art of Life.

It was a role I could scarcely have imagined when I left the Gold Coast in 1999, bound for London to follow in my father’s journalistic footsteps.

My 11-year journey with CNN International launched me on a wild journey around the world, reporting and presenting from disaster zones, the hype of major sporting events, and, on many occasions, reviewing high-end experiences.

I became an unofficial ambassador for the Gold Coast, championing its virtues wherever my travels took me.

Now, being back in what I truly believe is the world’s best city, I marvel at how it’s transformed into a first-class destination.

For this moment, though, I recall being in the presence of motoring royalty.

When I stopped staring, I started thinking and that wasn’t a good idea.

The reality of what I was facing set in: left-hand drive, navigating the right side of narrow Italian country roads scarcely wider than a matchbox.

Add in a staggering value of $1 million (AUD) brand new in 2007 and my only comfort was that Rolls Royce had graciously covered the insurance premium.

The Drophead Coupe’s contrast with my first car couldn’t be starker.

My 1980 HZ Holden ferried me around the Gold Coast in the early 1990s during my time as a crime and court reporter for the Gold Coast Bulletin and Nine Gold Coast News.

The HZ was a beast, excessively heavy, brutish, and utterly devoid of power steering.

I was young enough to muscle my way through a three-point turn.

No such force was required with the Drophead, it felt light and silky.

It wasn’t long before I was at ease and resting the elbow on the door, in good Aussie driving style.

Seven hours of filming later, I had milked every moment of this unforgettable experience – incident free, I’ll add.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Encounter

There were many stand-out experiences throughout my career, but not all were as glamorous as they seemed.

During one assignment in 2009, I took CNN viewers inside the world of the now infamous Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and his White Party in St Tropez, on the French Riviera.

Sadly, Diddy’s bling came with a sordid underbelly.

If I had a hint of his true nature back then, my helping hand from the tender might have accidently pushed him overboard.

The party in St Tropez was a lifestyle not for the faint-hearted, no expense spared in a grand display of tasteless exhibitionism, where untold extravagance overshadowed genuine sophistication.

Rolex Living Golf

Taking CNN viewers inside the luxury lifestyle wasn’t my main gig; for so long, it was all about the global golf industry.

In 2003, I created CNN’s half-hour monthly feature show Living Golf, sponsored by Rolex.

During my seven-year stint I would go on to host Living Golf, which aired for over 20 years.

CNN and Rolex are two brands with target audiences of high net-worth individuals and travellers, which meant the show’s content ideally focused on the upper tier of the golf economy: from tourism, golf course design, fashion, equipment and interviews with globally known players.

I seriously don’t believe the most creative AI could have devised a better brief for a sports-loving golf tragic from the Gold Coast.

I recruited Sanctuary Cove’s Adam Scott to appear as our professional expert and tips advisor.

Yes, I admit I made that decision based on a great deal of homegrown bias, plus he was a perfect fit for both global brands.

I joined Adam in various parts of America, Europe and at Sanctuary Cove Golf Club for the purpose of filming.

Recording on home soil on the Gold Coast with Adam for CNN was simply awesome.

It was also a thrill meeting his parents at Sanctuary Cove, the incredibly humble and generous Pam and Phil Scott, who provided great insights to his temperament.

Watching Adam on television when he won the Masters in 2013 was the best night of no sleep I’ve ever had.

We spent a lot of time on Sanctuary Cove’s The Pines course filming tips sessions.

Incidentally, I rate The Pines as my third best course I’ve played.

The Old Course at St Andrews is a clear number one after I played alongside Aussie legend Peter ‘Chook’ Fowler in the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which included rounds at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

Second on my list is the Gary Player-designed Ria Bintan Golf Club in Indonesia, accessible by ferry from Singapore.

The transition from dense tropical forest to coast course is unique and breathtaking.

If it’s not on your list of courses to play, I would strongly suggest adding it.

In 2010, I caught up with Gary Player in Abu Dhabi for nine holes and an interview during the opening of the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, where he designed the course.

Gary was a whirlwind of energy, radiating wisdom about both life and golf.

I was so captivated by his presence that I can scarcely recall the details of the golf we played.

A professional photographer caught a shot of us walking the course that captured everything about being in the presence of greatness.

I have that picture framed at home.

There is a long list of highlights during my time on Living Golf : interviewing Tiger Woods and reporting on his journey, spending time with a young Rory McIlroy at his hometown in Holywood, Northern Ireland, hosting CNN’s coverage of The Masters at Augusta, and even playing poor golf in a pro-am at the Dubai Desert Classic with two-time major winner Mark O’Meara and former Formula One champion Nigel Mansell.

Rock star Alice Cooper was fascinating, especially his confessions on how golf and a good wife saved him from alcoholism.

He decided to turn to the clubs instead of the bottle and thankfully the golf bug kicked in.

Though, above of them all was one very special highlight.

Michelle Wie – Trailblazer for Women’s Golf

Michelle Wie’s groundbreaking decision to compete against men at the highest level sent shockwaves through the traditional golf establishment, sparking debate and admiration in equal measure.

Regardless of where anyone stands on the merits of her choice, it was universally recognised as a stroke of marketing genius.

Nike quickly saw Michelle’s potential for global exposure, pairing her remarkable talent with one of the largest sponsor deals ever offered to a young golfer, worth millions of dollars.

And why wouldn’t they.

Aged just 14, Michelle competed in the Sony Open in Hawaii in 2004.

She finished ahead of nearly 50 male competitors in a PGA Tour event.

A simply astonishing achievement that surely inspired countless young female athletes to pursue their dreams without limitation.

Michelle’s presence drew unprecedented attention to women’s golf, making a powerful statement about ability and overdue recognition.

The golf world embraced her, and her rise provided a refreshing counterpoint to the constant media frenzy surrounding Tiger Woods.

We dedicated a Rolex Living Golf show to exploring Michelle’s story in depth, which took me to Honolulu, Hawaii.

After interviewing her parents, it was clear that discipline, both on and off the course, was central to her success.

I interviewed her several times in Dubai during her journey, when she was barely an adult yet already so accomplished, both in her golf game and in her presence.

Now married with children, I think it would be fascinating to hear Michelle reflect on her journey and how she handled the blowtorch of global scrutiny and expectation.

I can’t help but imagine how impactful it would be if Michelle Wie attended the Australian WPGA Championship at Sanctuary Cove’s The Palms course as a guest.

Her insights and experience would be invaluable to the next generation of aspiring young Australian female golfers, offering inspiration and guidance as they pursue their dreams on the big stage.

Good FOUNDATIONS Décor & DESIGN

WITH MORE AUSTRALIANS renovating rather than relocating, interior design is shifting towards spaces designed for longevity through warmer, more expressive homes that prioritise wellness, comfort and long-term liveability.

Softer palettes alongside materially rich finishes are replacing stark simplicity with a renewed focus on creating spaces that feel personal and enduring.

“While creating a sanctuary at home is still key, the way we shape our homes is evolving, with homeowners prioritising spaces that feel warmer, more personal and better aligned with long-term living,” says Renee McGinty, General Manager Marketing, CSR.

“This shift is reflected in the finishes homeowners are choosing, with a growing focus on materials that feel restorative and grounding.

“2026 is also about investing wisely in the home, making changes that are sustainable and can last the distance, rather than becoming outdated quickly.”

From simple updates to more substantial renovations, there are several key architectural and interior design choices shaping homes in 2026.

Considered design choices are shaping interiors.

Materially Rich Walls

Walls are becoming a central canvas for expression, offering the ideal backdrop for art, design and architectural details that add depth, warmth and personality to a space.

“A smooth, expertly finished plasterboard wall can serve as the foundation for textural features, integrated niches or subtle zoning, introducing architectural interest while enhancing everyday living,” Renee says.

Functionality & Comfort

Intimate, cocooning spaces are increasingly sought after in 2026.

Richer, warmer colour palettes paired with textured wall treatments are being used to soften interiors and add depth while reducing sound reverberations in the home.

Acoustic wall panels are emerging as part of this shift, valued not only for their performance but for the way they introduce texture and architectural interest to walls across living rooms, bedrooms, offices and media zones.

Architectural Detail

Softly curved wall niches are emerging as an impactful architectural feature.

Cornices are also seeing renewed interest as part of the move toward subtle detailing.

Rather than being purely functional, contemporary cornice profiles can help soften transitions between walls and ceilings, providing a cohesive look that enhances an overall sense of balance within a space.

Light Filled Homes

Harnessing natural light in the home helps our mood, sleep and overall wellbeing and skylights are becoming an increasingly popular way to introduce its benefits into everyday spaces.

As the light shifts throughout the day, it can enhance design features, cast subtle shadow lines, and highlight architectural details.

In kitchens, skylights are especially effective, flooding the heart of the home with light and making the space feel larger and more inviting.

Italian SOUL

Sovereign Interiors: Reimagining Italian craftsmanship for Australian living.

LUXURY

INTERIOR FURNITURE SHOWROOM and interior designers at Sovereign Interiors bring the soul of Italian craftsmanship to Australian homes.

In collaboration with Italy’s most revered designers and artisans, Sovereign transforms centuries-old techniques into contemporary pieces that honour tradition while embracing the openness and ease of Australian living.

"At this year’s Salone del Mobile, we saw Italian design take on a more soulful, organic edge: curved forms, soft matte finishes, natural stones like travertine, warm timber, and tactile fabrics," said Cayley Scrooby, interior stylist, showroom, and marketing manager at Sovereign Interiors.

"It reflects a shift we’re also seeing in Australia, a desire for refined minimalism that feels grounded, lived-in, and connected to nature.

“It’s a beautiful synergy, where Italian craftsmanship meets the ease and honesty of Australian living."

Elysian Perth Residence

Sovereign Interiors’ most recent Perth project exemplifies Italian minimalism reinterpreted for Australian living.

Designed with signature Italian collections, the residence balances ultra-luxury with family comfort and practical functionality.

"The design brief was to blend timeless elegance with everyday practicality.

“Open-plan living connects the main lounge, dining, and expansive outdoor entertaining spaces, capturing the essence of the Australian lifestyle," says Cayley.

“Rather than simply transplanting Italian craftsmanship, the residence weaves it seamlessly into this way of living; expansive, relaxed and in harmony with nature.

“Each furniture piece was chosen for both sophistication and family comfort, reinforcing the seamless indoor-outdoor connection.”

Designing with Italian Soul

The Reflex Angelo ‘Big Ben’ Dining Suite is a show-stopping centrepiece, crafted with Venetian glass and intricate gold and chrome clockwork gears.

For the Perth Project, the dining suite was further personalised with the client’s choice of

combination of Italian leather and fabric detailing, making it a fully bespoke piece by Reflex Angelo.

The centrepiece turntable rotates like the features of the iconic Big Ben clock, merging sculptural artistry with everyday utility, anchoring the open-plan dining area.

Reflex Angelo traces its origins to the Lucatello family’s Società Vetraria Biancadese, specialising in solid Murano glass and high-end furniture pieces.

Designed by Riccardo Lucatello for Reflex Angelo, the Big Ben showcases traditional Venetian techniques such as expert glass shaping and meticulous hand-finishing, brought together with modern engineering to create a table that is both functional and sculptural.

"This suite represents the fusion of centuriesold Italian craftsmanship with contemporary design thinking, perfectly tailored for the modern Australian lifestyle," said Cayley.

In contrast to the bold presence of the dining suite, the Turri Roma Bed, designed by Monica Armani, brings subtlety, refinement, and intimate luxury to the bedroom.

"Elegant and seductive, ethereal, timeless piece," Armani describes.

"The inspiration came as a journey through the archetypes of Italian architecture, from Ancient Rome with the Colosseum to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (‘Square Colosseum’)."

The bed’s design draws on the semicircular arch, translating precise curves and clean lines into a sculptural yet inviting centrepiece.

"What fascinated me most in the collaboration with Turri is their vision and the mastery of their artisans.

“Bringing my stylistic signature into dialogue with such extraordinary craftsmanship at the highest level was inspiring.

“From this, the Roma Collection was born."

At the heart of the Roma night area, the bed designed by Monica Armani for Turri stands as an icon of contemporary elegance.

Fully upholstered in leather, it envelops the space with its refined presence, while the side panels, embroidered with the collection’s signature motif, embody the perfection of Italian craftsmanship.

In Perth, this vision translates into a bedroom that is both serene and practical, an Italian architectural motif reimagined as a retreat tailored to the pace of Australian family life.

Behind the Scenes of Italian Craftsmanship

Sovereign Interiors works with family-run ateliers in Milan, Pesaro, Venice, and Forlì, where highly-skilled artisans continue centuries-old techniques, hand-carving, inlay work, intricate joinery and precision-stitched upholstery.

"What makes these pieces truly extraordinary is the soul behind them,” says Cayley.

“You can feel the care in every curve, every seam, every finish."

While rooted in tradition, these ateliers embrace innovation.

CNC machinery and 3D modelling enhance precision and durability without compromising on integrity.

The result is pieces that are timeless yet perfectly suited for modern living.

Bringing Italian craftsmanship to Australia requires more than aesthetics.

Australian homes favour openness, natural light and relaxed sophistication.

Sovereign Interiors adapts dimensions, materials and finishes to suit local conditions, ensuring durability for indoor and outdoor spaces, from UV-resistant fabrics to marine-grade finishes.

"We always say: luxury should be liveable,” Cayley explains.

“That’s the harmony we aim to achieve, where beauty doesn’t come at the expense of comfort or functionality."

Australia’s Shift Toward Intentional Design

Australian clients now seek pieces that tell a story, who made them, where, and how.

Modular sofas, sculptural dining tables in natural stone or timber, and elegant storage solutions are crafted to be used, admired, and handed down.

"It’s less about fast interiors, and more about lasting impact, pieces that feel personal, crafted, and considered," Cayley adds.

This shift mirrors the very ethos of Italian design, where craftsmanship and provenance are inseparable from beauty.

By bringing these values into Australian homes, Sovereign Interiors bridges two worlds: the timeless artistry of Italy and the relaxed, practical elegance of Australian living. sovereigninteriors.com.au

Custom CABINETRY

Wood Marble & White – where professional experience meets Australian craftsmanship.

IN PREMIUM INTERIORS, cabinetry is never just cabinetry.

It shapes how a kitchen functions, how a wardrobe flows and how a home feels every day. When it is resolved well, it feels effortless. When it is not, it is noticed constantly.

Wood Marble & White is a premium Australian cabinetry studio where award-winning design and local manufacturing come together for high-quality, carefully resolved projects.

Led by experience, the business was built on the belief that considered design and disciplined manufacturing should never be separated.

The studio has evolved through decades of complex projects, discerning clients and industry recognition, all guided by craftsmanship, precision and care.

In a competitive market where many brands rely on familiar words like luxury and bespoke, Wood Marble & White takes a more grounded approach.

Rather than leaning on descriptors, the studio focuses on clarity of process and control of outcome.

All cabinetry is designed and manufactured in Australia.

This is not simply a point of origin; it is a commitment to accountability.

Local manufacturing allows oversight at every stage – from material selection through to assembly and installation.

Details are resolved in-house. Timelines are managed with discipline. What is designed is what is built. This integrated model is increasingly rare.

While many providers position themselves as design-led but outsource production, Wood Marble & White maintains complete alignment between concept and construction.

Kitchens, wardrobes, bathrooms, wine rooms and bespoke joinery are integrated seamlessly into the home, not treated as standalone products, but as lasting architectural features.

The studio’s projects are often described as calm and refined, an outcome that is deliberate and effective.

Design begins with listening.

From initial consultation through to installation, the process is structured and transparent.

Detailed drawings and material selections are resolved early. Communication is clear. Precision is non-negotiable.

"When people are investing at this level, they expect things to be done properly, without unnecessary disruption," says Owner/Director Peter Kaptein.

This is a philosophy that extends to the studio’s Brisbane presence, where a new showroom has been conceived not simply as a display space, but as a collaborative environment.

Full-scale kitchens, material finishes and functional mechanisms allow clients and design partners to experience quality first hand.

Over nearly three decades, award recognition has followed the studio’s work, yet accolades remain secondary to longevity.

Referrals, repeat collaborations and trusted relationships continue to drive growth.

Reputation has been earned through consistency rather than marketing noise.

Luxury, in this context, is not excess.

It is attention to detail. It is proportion, quality materials and restraint.

It is knowing that the original vision has been delivered without compromise.

In homes where quality and detail matter, cabinetry defines the everyday experience.

When design and manufacturing work together, that experience becomes seamless.

For Wood Marble & White, that alignment is not a feature, it is the foundation.

BespokeAPPROACH

Häcker Australia create high quality European kitchens with a unique Australian flair.

WHEN IT COMES TO KITCHENS, Australians prefer larger designs in more subtle tones compared to their European cousins.

Häcker Australia, a supplier of high-quality European kitchens with a unique Australian flair, knows this well.

The business designs luxury kitchens in Australia that are made in Rödinghausen, Germany, and prides itself on meeting the varying tastes of local customers.

“Häcker’s focus is to provide a range of cabinetry solutions based on each client’s bespoke needs,” explains Häcker Australia director, Clem Rizk.

Clem and co-director Charbel Rizk work with German heritage brand Häcker Küchen to bring its distinctive range to Australian customers.

Founded in 1898, Häcker Küchen enjoys a rich heritage as one of Germany's most prominent kitchen manufacturers.

Today, the family-owned company delivers highly bespoke kitchens every week to over 500 global partners.

As well as delivering European flavour with local needs in mind, the extensive range on offer to Australian clients is what sets the brand apart from competitors.

“Other European providers tend to stick to one style aesthetic as their unique signature, whereby Häcker can provide the full suite of styles from minimalist to full Hamptons/country kitchens,” Clem explains.

The cabinetry styles range from contemporary to coastal, minimalist, industrial or Scandinavian, and are manufactured by Europe’s finest cabinet makers using precision and world-renowned German engineering.

This combination with a luxury Australian aesthetic can be further enhanced with finishes ranging from slate veneer, frosted glass or stainless-steel lacquer finish.

The designer cabinetry is purpose-built for all areas of the home, including new kitchens, renovations, bathrooms, bedrooms, lounge and living areas and dining rooms and offices.

Regional preferences are considered, as when it comes to cabinetry, Australians generally opt for larger kitchen spaces to their European counterparts.

Australians also prefer different colour palettes and designs, choosing paired back cabinetry in shades of white, grey and black, with contrasting colours such as deep greens and light blues, over the bright colours seen across Europe.

As a result, being able to deliver that European flavour with local functionality in mind has been integral.

“Currently, we are seeing an increase in country and Hampton style larger format kitchens,” Charbel notes.

“Clients are really enjoying the stately presence of the solid cabinetry mixed with beautiful veined marble bench tops.”

In one recent example of how Häcker's talented designers can assist, a client bought a pied-à-terre (small living unit) in South Brisbane and wanted to change the kitchen to match their aesthetic.

The designers were able to leave intact a Carrara marble feature, while creating a space more suited to the form and function the client was seeking.

“It’s this out-the-box thinking that allows our clients to receive a bespoke service,” Charbel explains.

Häcker Australia has a flagship showroom in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, as well as Glen Iris in Melbourne and Claremont in Perth and its specialist in-house team designs and installs cabinetry Australia-wide.

Customers receive a 10-year warranty for kitchen door fronts and a lifetime warranty for kitchen runners and hinges.

Häcker Küchen is also committed to sustainability principles, developing its entire product portfolio to be climate neutral.

New design hubs are due across Australia in coming months. hackeraustralia.com.au

Farm TO CUP

Where does your coffee come from?

WORDS MARJ OSBORNE

LIKE FOOTBALL FANS, coffee drinkers are tribal creatures … but how well do we know the story behind our favourite ‘cup of Joe’?

Do we know where it was produced or who farmed those beans?

Do we know the difference between a mediocre cup of coffee and a great cup of coffee?

Most coffee sold in Australia is from south and central America, however, two innovative businesses in South-East Queensland are filling the knowledge gap about coffee sources.

Both Willy’s Beans and Old Quarter Coffee source their beans directly from farmers in their country of origin importing the green beans, roasting them, then serving them to customers.

It’s a sustainable business model that cuts out the ‘middle man’, connecting consumers with the farmers who grow the beans.

Jayson Mathiou, of Willy’s Beans, was born and raised on the Gold Coast.

He specialised in physiotherapy, progressing in his career to treating elite athletes, including the Colombian Olympians.

For several years, he travelled the world, visiting over 75 countries.

But it wasn’t until he spent time back in Colombia talking to coffee farmers that Jayson realised how much work went into one great cup of coffee and he was determined to return home to tell the story.

Coffee is a huge industry in Australia, worth close to $20 billion annually.

Most of it is commercial coffee, sold through wholesalers and supermarkets.

Only .5 per cent of the industry is specialty coffee, and this is the sector that Jayson is passionate about; the point where meaning is made.

“There always needs to be commercial coffee, but we need to educate consumers about the difference between commercial and specialty coffee,” Jayson explains.

“Everything must have meaning, otherwise it’s simply transactional,” he adds.

Jayson’s love for speciality Colombian coffee, and the hardworking farmers who grow it, inspired him to start Willy's Beans in Burleigh Heads, where he grew up.

Talking coffee like sommeliers talk wine, Jayson wants to educate us about the difference between a ‘house red’ and a fine cabernet (in this case, single origin specialty coffee).

He’s also talking ‘terroir’ and sustainable farming methods, opening avenues to improve the quality of specialty coffee while educating consumers to help them make better choices.

“We need to understand what happens on a farm level to understand the differences in our coffee cup,” he explains.

“We take care to select farmers with the best sustainable practices to work with and invest in. >>

“For example, one of the farms has 40 per cent of the farm preserved for conservation, harvesting beans from only about 25 per cent of the land to maintain minerals in the soil and to regenerate it for the future.

“Then, at harvest, the farmer only picks out the best beans from his crop, perhaps a 1 in 30 ratio.

“By choosing beans from a farm like this, we get coffee that tastes more like how the farmer intended it,” Jayson adds.

“The Australian market is geared towards drinking coffee with milk, so mostly we are drinking blends, but Colombian coffee is great in its own right.”

Jayson has named his company after the famous Willys Jeep, an iconic vehicle used by Colombian farmers which embodies the qualities of reliability, strength and longevity that he emulates in his company.

You can see the jeep parked in the Willy’s Beans warehouse, a tasting room experience that immerses the consumer in the life of a Colombian coffee farmer.

“We deliver a unique and delicious coffee experience at our Coffee Warehouse in Burleigh Heads that highlights the hard work and expertise of coffee farmers,” Jayson tells me.

“I want to push past the boundaries to inspire us to want better coffee but the push needs to come from this end.

“Most farmers are too small to have a voice. They need us to advocate for them through our choices.”

For Jayson, this means developing the market on one end of the journey, while paying for coffee at the start of the harvest on the other, even though he must wait four months to receive it.

“Coffee builds relationships,” he says.

Relationships were also the key to how partners Yose Le Cerf and Amy Hicks started Old Quarter Coffee.

Having visited Vietnam since their teens, working and living there for periods of time, in the back of their minds was the thought of creating a business that had a social impact; something different to the models of how most businesses were run.

It took travel experience to show them the gap in the market that they could fill.

Yose and Amy have always been interested in coffee.

Yose had visited coffee growers in the southern part of Vietnam, a country where most growers concentrate on Robusta coffee.

Well-suited to Vietnam’s humid climate, cheap to grow, with a high yield of beans per plant, Robusta is predominantly used in the production of instant coffee and to bring depth to espresso blends.

However, most of Australia’s café culture coffee drinkers prefer the lighter, brighter Arabica coffee which is sweeter than Robusta, and contains only half the caffeine.

A turning point for Yose and Amy came when a mutual friend introduced them to Pat and Tam,

who owned a small Arabica coffee plantation in northern Vietnam.

The couple were so impressed with the coffee Pat and Tam grew they decided to import their green beans to Australia, roast them and sell the coffee in a vertically integrated business model – from farm to cup.

They took the leap of faith in 2016, when nobody else was importing and selling Asian coffee, by importing 700kg of green beans from Pat and Tam.

In 2017, the pair opened Old Quarter Coffee in a shed in Ballina’s backstreets, the business name reflecting the atmospheric Old Quarter of Hanoi.

“Our customers love our vision: to pioneer top quality Asian coffees in the Australian market and to change lives through coffee,” Amy says.

“They love to see a humble grassroots business expand; they love that people care."

The couple have expanded their sources to include committed partners in other parts of Asia.

“There are morality issues with any product we consume, including coffee,” Amy tells me.

“Ingredients matter … the coffee we drink should never be at the expense of other people’s livelihoods.

“Importing from Asian growers, the relationship with each partner is bespoke, the farmer sets the price, ensuring that they cover the cost of production plus a margin of profit.”

Bringing Asian coffee beans into a South-American-dominated market has been a challenging journey for the couple.

“It takes time to change narratives.

“When people taste our coffee they love it and it’s exciting because coffee professionals are only now starting to be open to Asian coffee.”

“Also, the consumer market is developing rapidly. There is growth in the communication between coffee growers and consumers.

“Roasters in big cities in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and China are now communicating directly with farmers, leading to domestic and global growth,” Amy explains.

Now operating shops in Ballina, Murwillumbah, Southport and Coolangatta, their annual import has reached 11 tons of beans (2024).

So, what makes Old Quarter Coffee different?

“Every single coffee we import is exclusive to us,” Amy tells me.

“Each one from a small holder farmer, most of whom are from ethnic minorities [who inherently carry a layer of disadvantage].”

Not only is Old Quarter Coffee experimenting with different ranges of coffees in their shop (think Floating Hanoi cold brew with fresh orange zest and a dusting of dark chocolate, or the dairy-free Strawberry Yuzu Matcha Tonic), but they also lead us to mindful consumerism.

Each cup we drink can make a difference to someone else’s life, bringing advantage rather than disadvantage.

And that’s a big call.

Friends WITH BENEFITS

When it comes to quality and taste, Australian wine label Foreign Friends is punching above its weight.

TASTING WINE FOR A LIVING can be a frustrating business: far too many wines are awful, the vast majority are perfectly drinkable yet ho-hum, and a rare few are amazing, yet it’s the latter that keeps the task worthwhile.

It’s kind of like golf or fishing – it’s the perfect drive, the trophy wahoo, that makes up for the dross along the way and keeps you – through so many disappointments – chasing the thrill of something special.

This is a tale of that perfect drive from a most unexpected source.

The story begins in 2016 when two sisters –Crystal and Leila Davis – met Juliette, a young French woman recently moved to Australia.

They realised they were kindred spirits and hatched a plan (no doubt over some terrific bottles) to build a wine brand.

After all, they had the necessary tools: Leila an already accomplished winemaker, Crystal a marketer, and Juliette a wholesaler of some of the best wines on the planet.

The deal was sealed, the wheels in motion, and in 2023 Foreign Friends Wine was born.

I’ve known Juliette for a decade or more; long before Foreign Friends solidified.

She sells me some amazing wines, yet in all of those years I’d had no inkling of this project she was involved with that was bubbling away in the shadows.

Until, last year, when she brought them along for me to try and, while I’m a bit too jaded for my jaw to drop, I experienced an epiphany.

The wines have everything – precision, honesty (more on that to come), deliciousness, gorgeous packaging, and most of all … excitement.

The perfect drive.

Foreign Friends plays with all sorts of varieties, some of them familiar – Chardonnay, Gamay, Nebbiolo perhaps – and some less so, like Savagnin and Pinot Blanc.

But the varieties and resultant wines are very married to the Victorian landscape and the vineyards from which the grapes are sourced.

Beechworth is the place they hold most dear, and over the coming years they hope to focus the brand more tightly on the region.

And when you think about the Beechworth royalty (Giaconda, Castagna, Savaterre, Sorrenberg etc) there’s little reason to question their choice, especially when it comes to Chardonnay.

Right now, Foreign Friends has two Beechworth Chardonnays – Black Springs and Louise.

Why Black Springs and why Louise?

Black Springs simply refers to the Black Springs vineyard.

Louise, however, pays homage to renowned French-American artist Louise Bourgeois.

And that is a theme that haunts the Foreign Friends labels: women who have made their mark.

There is Louise Chardonnay (Bourgeois), Virginia Pinot Blanc (Woolf of course), Ada Rosé (Lovelace), Jeanne Savagnin (Baret), Hilma Barbera (Klint), and Anna Gamay (Atkins).

WORDS TONY HARPER

So, in no particular order, a photographer, a computer programmer, a botanist meets explorer, an abstract artist and an author.

You’d assume there are more to come; an Amelia perhaps, Ita, Diana, Margaret, Joan.

It’s a deep, deep well to draw from.

Of the two Chardonnays the Black Springs is the more gregarious; richer, perhaps more complex, more ‘made’.

While Louise, I reckon, is finer, more subtle and perhaps sitting more neatly into a classic ‘Beechworth Chardonnay’ persona (if there is such a thing).

They are both terrific, confident expressions – siblings with similar facial features but different builds – that (despite costing $60 and $70 respectively) are terrific value for premium Beechworth Chardonnay.

Yet for me it is the Savagnin and Gamay that speak loudest of the Foreign Friends range.

Savagnin – a grape indigenous to eastern France and responsible for the great Vins Jaune of Jura – has found a small yet growing foothold in Australian vineyards and it is capable of producing some brilliant dry whites.

Crittenden Wines on the Mornington Peninsula makes a jaw-dropping version of Vin Jaune.

sherry-like styles of the Jura, but as a dry white it performs brilliantly.

And there is plenty of texture behind the crisp acidity and the kind of lemon-pith, Asian spice flavours.

It’s a wine that could be delicious and simple if it were in other hands, but here it is layered, satisfying and beguiling.

The Gamay is similar in the way it overlays complexity and structure on top of bright, generous fruit.

Gamay is the grape behind Beaujolais, and while the whole Beaujolais region has moved on from the bright, simplistic lovely jubbely, candy cane versions of Beaujolais Nouveau (and now produces a range of startlingly brilliant, structured reds) this is a different beast.

It smells and tastes of Gamay, but it has a definite Aussie edge in its plushness, and slightly briary notes.

Is it good? Yeah, it’s brilliant, and shares the same kind of swagger and self-confidence as the rest of the range.

Ditto the Hilma Barbera: crunchy acid, very bright, plush vibrant fruit and an unmistakable Aussie DNA.

My earlier comment on honesty refers to the

They reek of both variety and place – nothing overworked or pretentious, but each and every one of the wines comes with a polish, an energy and an appeal to intellect that sets them well apart from the pack.

For an Australian wine brand Foreign Friends is in the upper echelon.

And for a very new wine brand it is really quite astonishing.

The production is small, the price is moderate if you consider what you are buying, and you’ll need to search hard to find it in your local wine shop (but it can be found).

In a pinch the wines are available on the Foreign Friends website.

love of adventure

Coastal road trip

Byron beaches, Lexus luxury and relaxation at Raes are the perfect combination for a weekend getaway.
WORDS ANGELA ORAM

NEW YEAR, NEW ADVENTURES … and 2026 kicked off with some amazing weather in South East Queensland, perfect for exploring our beautiful slice of coastline and hinterland.

My husband and I were road tripping in style, heading to Byron Bay in the Lexus NX 350h – courtesy of the team at Lexus Australia.

An exhilarating hybrid electric vehicle with the combined power of 0 to 100km/hr in 6.3 seconds, this luxury model proved to be the ideal travel partner.   >>

Sanctuary Resort Shoppe

Anyone who has crossed the infamous invisible line from Queensland to NSW understands the quite sudden change in road surface quality, however, our Lexus glided into our neighbouring state without us even noticing.

Following a friend's recommendation, our first stop was at Cubby Bakehouse located on the Tweed River at Chinderah.

This was hubby’s chance to try reverse parking the vehicle.

Great external cameras and an easy turning circle made this a simple job.

Coffee and cakes on board, and we were bound for Byron.

A stunning poolside guesthouse at Raes on Wategos was home for the next two nights.

Wategos Beach is perfect for a quiet couple’s getaway.

Securely park the car and you can wander between the beach, Raes Hotel and the guesthouses and nearby walking tracks.

We love the buzz of Byron Bay, but were looking forward to some quiet time, and this stay delivered.

Only a minute’s walk from the hotel on the beach, the guesthouses are at the top of the hill as you drive into Wategos Beach.

The guesthouse lobby feels like a luxurious beach home.

Stylishly furnished with large comfy chairs and a welcoming fireplace, it was obvious this accommodation was designed for relaxing and reconnecting.

Dining tables are strategically scattered around the lobby to allow for private conversations and to take in the views.

There are two pools on the property, one perfect for lazing and dipping, the other for

anyone wanting to do some laps to work off the cocktails they’ve been sipping.

Our room was huge, and the comfortable beach-home feel we experienced in the lobby carried through to our accomodation.

Large French doors opened onto our private terrace, where we could enjoy the morning sun in the outdoor lounges.

A gorgeous pale sage green clawfoot bathtub was the centrepiece of our bathroom and the king bed was draped with quality linen.

Located on the beachfront, Raes dining room is a stand out.

The restaurant is intimate, with stunning views of the water and lush gardens.

The windows open so you can hear the waves and birdlife, and we felt welcome and indulged from the moment we walked in.

The tasting menu consists of tasty pieces of art on a plate with delicious drinks to complement them.

We liked that the paired drinks weren’t listed so there were a couple of unexpected surprises.

It was also great to see some Australian wines included.

Use of the infrared sauna at the spa was part of our package.

As someone who has jumped on the infrared train, I loved starting my day with a good sweat.

The spa itself feels like a Mediterranean escape, tranquil and unique.

This was our first stay at Raes and we appreciated how much they had to offer in a location just a little outside of the hustle of bustle of central Byron.

Wandering between the guesthouses and the hotel was easy and being able to make use of the facilities at both is a bonus.

Rae's also use Lexus vehicles for airport transfers and to deliver guests to nearby tourist sights and landmarks.

E-bikes available at the guesthouses mean you can also make your way into the central area without worrying about parking.

If you’re like us and can’t go to Byron Bay without a trip to the lighthouse, then the bikes are an easier option than the thighburning hike.

Raes has so much to offer for a getaway, but the staff and the thoughtful little touches make it truly special – a freshly brewed pot of tea beside our bed when we returned from dinner, slippers by the bedside, warm lighting at night and relaxing music during the day.

Full of good food and great memories, after three days, it was time to head home.

We decided to do a little more exploring before we were jolted back to reality.

Following a couple of local tips, we decided to make a stop at Broken Head and Suffolk Park as we drove out of Byron.

Long beaches, wide roads and beach shacks made us feel like staying another couple of nights in one of these laid-back locations.

We decided to keep that up our sleeve for another time and made our way back to the Gold Coast.

Once again our Lexus delivered us to our destination in style and comfort.

At only a little over an hour from home, a trip to Byron Bay or the surrounding areas is a perfect weekend getaway.

We didn’t realise how much we needed a break until we were there.

These moments to rejuvenate and reconnect are important at any time of the year so treat yourself and take Lexie along for the ride. >>

Reef and Retreat

From the pristine waters of Lady Elliot Island to the quiet luxury of Emporium Hotel South Bank.

OUR YEAR OF BACKYARD adventures continues.

This time my husband and I were fortunate enough to experience the 3-day Reef and Retreat package offered by Emporium Hotel South Bank and Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, which included a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef.

The perfect mix of nature, outdoor activities, education and luxury, this getaway began just up the road in Brisbane, where we enjoyed an overnight stay in the spectacular Emporium Hotel. >>

WORDS ANGELA ORAM

It was an early start the next morning, with a private transfer from the hotel to Redcliffe Aerodrome for our trip to Lady Elliot Island.

This mind-blowing coral cay island is situated in a highly protected ‘Green Zone’ 85km northeast of Bundaberg.

It can be reached from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast by small plane in approximately 80 minutes.

Like us, I’m sure many locals are unaware that the Great Barrier Reef is so easily accessible on such a well-organised day trip.

Flying north over picture-perfect coastline, an abundance of marine life can be seen in the waters below.

Then, as you approach the landing, the excitement builds when you see the size of the reef you’ll soon be up close to.

Your time ashore is fully guided, with snorkelling gear, a glass-bottom boat trip, towels, reef shoes and an island tour included.

Lunch features a delicious buffet selection of prawns, salads, hot dishes and desserts and beer and/or wine.

While in the water, hubby and I swam alongside green, loggerhead and hawksbill turtles, and were surrounded by the most amazing, colourful fish.

We also saw some beautiful coral reefs and marine life, and both hubby and I agreed that snorkelling at Lady Elliott was by far the best we’ve ever experienced.

In fact, the island has been recognised as the #1 snorkelling destination in the world by Lonely Planet, and it’s easy to see why.

The island’s birdlife is also spectacular and attracts birdwatchers from all over the world.

After a day in this paradise, you will feel like you’ve seen and experienced the best the Great Barrier Reef has to offer, and you might just be right.

A world-leading and award-winning leader in eco-tourism, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort has been family-run and operated by Peter Gash and partners since 2005.

Power is generated on the island, there is a desalination plant for water, all waste is treated on Lady Elliot, and there is an island restoration project in place.

If a few days at one with nature in the comfortable resort accommodation on the cay is of interest, we could see how a trip to the island wouldoffer different attractions at different times of the year.

Turtle hatching in summer, whale watching in winter as well as snorkelling all year round.

With our memory banks full we flew back to Brisbane, where staying at the Emporium meant our day continued into the night with drinks and tapas at The Terrace Rooftop Bar. >>

Emporium Hotel South Bank

As mentioned earlier, the package offered was the perfect mix of luxury and adventure.

The steam room, cold plunge and sauna at Emporium Hotel South Bank are worthy of a day spa, while the infinity pool deck is the ideal spot for enjoying a morning coffee.

Facing east, the kiss of the sun to start your day is the perfect treat.

This is also the on-trend place to sip an afternoon cocktail while admiring the view, then as night kicks in, you can watch the cityscape come alive with a stunning lighting showcase on the other side of the river.

Since returning home, we’ve shared our encounters with many family members and friends.

This is always a good indication that what we experienced was something truly special.

Q & A

Media Personality and seasoned traveller Damien Anthony Avery-Rossi loves discovering new sights, new destinations and new friends.

What do you enjoy about travelling? Experiencing new people, places, sights, scents, tastes and the prospect that anything can happen – I always find it really exciting.

What has been your most memorable travel experience?

I think it would have to be my very first solo trip as an 18-year-old taking the train from Paris all the way down to Athens (including one very arduous boat ride from Brindisi, Italy to Patras, Greece that put me off long ferry boat rides for life).

The whole trip was such an adventure and the first time I was out in this crazy world on my own.

Is there a particular place on your travel ‘bucket list’?

India is right up there and it’s looking like I will be hosting a major fashion event in New Delhi early next year –can’t wait.

I’d also love to return to Rio de Janeiro – and the Maldives will always be on my bucket list no matter how many previous visits.

Window or aisle seat?

Depends, if it’s a new destination then window for sure for the incoming view but if it’s somewhere I fly to regularly, like Los Angeles, then definitely the aisle (I hate having to crawl over someone when they’re sleeping … awkward).

What is your most essential travel item?

My leather backpack – so many handy pockets.

How do you pass time while in transit? In the Qantas Club Lounge if there is one … or any airport bar will do.

Car, coach, plane or ship?

Ship for sure.

I have always loved cruises … it’s really the easiest way to travel and see multiple destinations with the least effort.

I also love the social aspect of cruise ships as well.

It’s always seemed funny to me that many people are of the belief that cruises are for the blue rinse set – I think there’s good fun to be had by all ages.

What is your favourite iconic landmark? I’d have to say the Pantheon in Rome. There is something about it – and the Piazza della Rotunda in which its located –that just transports me to another time. I could sit at a cafe there for hours (and have).

What do you always do before you go?

A nervous wee.

Is there one piece of travel advice you can share?

In larger airplanes with a 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 configuration, sit on the right side of the plane (when seated looking forward) as the passengers exit much more quickly than those on the left-hand side.

It only took me about 40 years of travel to work that one out.

What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have ever tasted?

For my 28th birthday, some friends hosted a party for me in El Salvador and while there they insisted I try a very popular Salvadoran dish … bull’s balls (as in testicles).

They wouldn’t take no for an answer and while I can’t say I enjoyed them I was glad not to wuss out.

Main Beach, Noosa
Ritz Paris
The Pantheon, Rome

What is one destination that everyone should see in their lifetime?

I’d have to say The Maldives, as the setting is the stuff of pure fantasy travel posters.

The white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters are unsurpassed and you always meet an incredible diversity of travellers there.

It’s such a remote destination (and the prices aren’t for the faint hearted) so those who do manage to get there really want to be there and we’ve made the most fascinating new friends on our visits.

How has technology changed the way we travel today?

It’s just made it so much easier to be able to book travel and accommodation from your smart phone and have most of the documents right there in your phone as well.

I’m sure one day soon passports will also be accessed on our phones which will be so handy.

As someone who is always worried about losing or misplacing my passport I will certainly welcome that.

Do you have a favourite hotel?

I think it would have to be the Ritz in Paris.

I hosted a recent ‘big’ birthday of mine in Paris (my favourite city in the world) and we stayed there as it had always been a bucket list item.

The hotel is so glamorous and the service was exceptional.

It truly exceeded my very high expectations.

Can you name your favourite Australian destination?

It would have to be Noosa.

My husband Jason and I have been fortunate enough to move here from Brisbane six months ago.

I fell in love with Noosa on my first visit to Australia in 1990 and have been in love with it ever since.

It’s just so beautiful with its amazing beaches, the National Park, the fantastic weather, the world-class dining scene – and the community has been incredibly welcoming.

I’m also a massive fan of NOOSA alive!, a brilliant 10-day annual arts and cultural festival established by renowned playwright David Williamson and his wife Kristin in 2002 that takes place every July.

Where have you just returned from and where to next?

We just returned from Phuket in Thailand (which was fabulous fun as always).

Next trip will be Margaret River for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday celebration.

The whole family is renting a beautiful beachfront home with a stunning view of the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives

On COURSE

A landmark year for women’s golf at Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club.

WITH TWO CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES, a proud legacy of hosting elite tournaments, and a community of members deeply connected to the game, Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club (SCGCC) enters 2026 with renewed purpose and anticipation.

From 19 to 22 March, The Palms golf course will welcome the 2026 Australian WPGA Championship, marking a significant moment for the Club and for women’s golf in Australia.

The return of the Championship carries particular meaning for the SCGCC members and team.

After the disappointment of the 2025 cancellation caused by ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Club has worked with the WPGA Tour of Australasia, PGA of Australia, Mulpha Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast to ensure the event

returns stronger, more resilient, and more celebratory than ever before.

The result is a standalone tournament that will bring world class golf to Sanctuary Cove and showcase the Club on a national and international stage.

The field is already shaping into one of the most exciting in recent years.

Australian major champion Hannah Green will make her Australian WPGA Championship debut at the Sanctuary Cove event, joined by rising star Steph Kyriacou, whose international success continues to position her as one of the most compelling young talents in the sport.

Their presence reflects the growing global stature of the Championship and reinforces Sanctuary Cove’s reputation as a premier venue for elite women’s golf.

The Palms golf course has undergone significant enhancement works over the past two years, including the reopening of the third and tenth holes and continued progress on the broader rejuvenation and enhancement program.

As the tournament approaches, the course is entering peak condition, with final preparations focused on delivering a layout that challenges the world’s best while showcasing the natural beauty and strategic character that define The Palms golf course.

Beyond the thrill of the competition itself, the Championship will bring a vibrant program of activity to the community.

As part of the Gold Coast Festival of Golf, Club members will enjoy exclusive opportunities throughout the week, including dedicated member functions, coaching clinics with marquee players and the rare chance to play

the professionals’ course the day after the tournament concludes.

These experiences reflect the Club’s commitment to ensuring members remain at the heart of every major event hosted at Sanctuary Cove.

The staging of the Championship is a testament to the passion, professionalism, and collaboration of the Sanctuary Cove team, members, volunteers, and partners.

It is an opportunity to showcase the Club’s world class facilities, its commitment to excellence, and its role in supporting the continued growth of women’s golf in Australia.

While Sanctuary Cove prepares to welcome players, spectators, and the global golf community, for the Club, it is a privilege to bring world class golf to their members’ home course. sanctuarycovegolf.com.au

THE LEGENDARY racing car driver Sir Jack Brabham loved cars and aeroplanes, so perhaps he could not have imagined a greater tribute than an airliner painted with the image of the unique machine in which he won the Formula 1 World Championships for drivers and constructors 60 years ago.

Sir Jack died as one of the Gold Coast’s most famous residents in 2014, but Alliance Airlines founder Steve Padgett has remembered the anniversary of his good friend’s achievements with a spectacular green-and-gold livery on one of its newest Embraer E190-100 aircraft.

Priceless Brabham racer remembered.

The eye-catching Embraer will go into service on Alliance’s regional charter and contract routes around Australia.

Its sides feature impressive 10.9 metre images of the famous Repco-Brabham BT19 V8 in which Brabham – in 1966 – became the only person in Formula 1 history to win the driver’s and constructor’s championships simultaneously in a car of his own manufacture.

It was his third driver’s title.

Only one Repco-Brabham BT19 was built and this priceless artefact of Australian sport now is in the permanent custody of the equally-iconic car parts company Repco, which will send it on a national tour.

It’s hoped the schedule will include the fourth annual Noosa Concours D’Elegance on July 18 – where Alliance’s Steve Padgett is one of the organisers.

The Concours organisers have already confirmed it will feature eight other Brabham racers in a special display.

Now established as one of Queensland’s most prestigious motoring and social events, the Concours will line Hastings Street, Noosa, with 50 specially-selected cars of the finest classic, performance and luxury pedigree, worth tens of millions of dollars and vying for Best of Show and other honours.

A further display will feature the latest supercars from several brands, while visitors also will be able to enjoy premium events including wine dinners, guided art tours and showcases by a number of local Queensland fashion designers.

It takes a lot to build a winning grand prix car or paint an airliner from nose to tail, but the results will provide a fitting tribute in 2026 to Australia’s greatest motorsportsman. noosaconcours.com.au

EV TYRE TEARERS

BATTERY-ELECTRIC CARS save money on ‘fuel’, but did you know they have a big appetite for tyres?

American authority Automotive World recently reported that EVs can wear tyres 20 per cent to 50 per cent faster than conventionallypowered cars.

The reason? EVs push more power through the tyres and they’re hundreds of kilos heavier.

Buying the correctly-specified tyres for EVs is important.

FERRARI TURNS ON THE LUCE

LUCE, FITTINGLY MEANING ‘light’ or ‘illumination’ in Italian, has been revealed as the name of Ferrari’s first electric car, which will be unveiled in May.

The name, along with interior concepts created by famed designers Sir Jony Ive and Australian Marc Newson, was announced as Ferrari rolls out a staged launch of the most revolutionary car in its history.

Until a few years ago, enthusiasts might have thought an electric Ferrari was incomprehensible, but then the Italian icon rolled out its Purosangué SUV, proving it was able and willing to adapt to the major trends in the car world.

Little else is known yet about the Luce, but fans can expect that its electric motors will make it among the fastest roadgoing Ferraris ever.

FAKE MOVES

IN AMERICA, fake signs are tricking autonomous or self-driving cars into making dangerous manoeuvres.

University trials revealed altered road signs containing commands like ‘turn left’ overrode the vehicle's AI sensor data and context awareness.

Autonomous vehicles such as Los Angeles taxis take directional data from multiple sources, not just cameras, but the problem of malicious road sign wording clearly needs more work.

Drone systems operating viewing from overhead rather than at ground level have also proved vulnerable to mis-identifying vehicles.

City SLICKER

The Hyundai Inster EV is small in stature but big on value.

WHILE THE BROAD TRANSITION to electric vehicles in Australia remains limited by battery capacity and availability of charging points, there’s one environment where the technology is right at home already – in the city.

Short journeys, easier access to chargers, very nimble performance and zero contribution to exhaust or noise emissions make small batterypowered cars ideal for urban use.

Higher purchase costs appear the most limiting factor.

Chinese manufacturers are starting to drive down prices as they introduce new small cars, but meanwhile buyers can pay up to an astonishing $60,000 for a Fiat Abarth 500e.

Hyundai’s Inster is a far more practical proposition than the tiny Fiat.

Priced between $39,000 and $45,000 (plus on-roads) for its three versions, the Inster’s still expensive for its size.

But its charms are very tempting.

The Inster is a boxy, funky-looking, fourdoor hatchback.

Its compact dimension – 3825mm long – make it brilliant for darting through traffic and parking in tight spots, yet inside it’s surprisingly roomy for four adults.

The so-called Standard Range version provides a 42kW battery, a front-drive motor with 71.1kW of power and 147Nm of torque.

Claimed range of 327 kms should be ample for many weekly commutes, but if more is needed the Extended Range and faux-SUV Cross Extended Range boost this to 49kW, 84.5kW, 147Nm and 360 kms.

Nominally offsetting the high price tag, Insters need service only every two years or 30,000 kms and there’s a 5-year warranty.

The battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 kms.

The Inster is well loaded with safety gear and driving aids, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot alert, tyre pressure monitoring, GPS speed sign recognition and LED headlights with automatic high-beam dipping.

Driving around town in the Inster is an almost addictive experience.

Weighing a light (for battery cars) 1400kg and combined with that electric-motor pulling power, it roars up hills at undiminished speed.

It darts into traffic gaps on just a touch of accelerator, reminding me of the best traits of a classic Mini Minor.

Although it has no gears, a similar slowing effect is achieved through regenerative braking.

All electric cars have this system where energy produced during braking is used to top up the battery.

In the Inster, the amount of regen can be adjusted in several steps from maximum to nothing by using gearshift-like finger paddles on the back of the steering wheel.

When driving, it’s possible to use the brakes very little or not at all, depending on the amount of regen selected.

Lift the accelerator and the car slows as though it’s been braked.

This takes some familiarity, but when combined with the sharp acceleration available this little car becomes hugely enjoyable.

Another bonus to the experience is the absence of engine noise.

Again, ideal for commuting: there’s no idling engine or acceleration growl, maybe just a small amount of road noise through the tyres.

Add in a handy turning circle of just 10.6 metres.

The Inster isn’t luxurious inside but it’s very smartly designed and has everything needed for a comfortable, calm and efficient week’s commuting.

There’s surprisingly good knee and head room, although the gap between the front seats feels a little tight.

This is a small electric car done extremely well.

A satisfactory test drive and maybe some hard-nosed price bargaining could make it an ideal choice for anyone who doesn’t want to drive their EV to Uluru.

Market LEADERS

Brisbane and Hobart have emerged as the standout property markets of the past 25 years.

THE FIRST QUARTER of the 21st Century has been a boon for the property market in Australia and despite siginificant gains across the board, just two capital cities have emerged as the standout performers over the past 25 years based on capital growth.

Market analyst Propertyology has identified Brisbane and Hobart as the top property markets since 2001 with capital growth of 760 per cent and 700 per cent respectively.

That compares with the national average of 560 per cent, a solid figure that reflects the wealth generated for those fortunate enough to be locked into the property market over this period.

With around 67 per cent of households either owning or paying off their home, that means seven out of 10 Australian households have experienced a significant increase in wealth over the past 25 years.

According to Propertology, a typical house in Australia was worth just $210,000 in 2001, but by the end of last year, the combined capital city average hit $1.18 million.

The Queensland and Tasmanian state capitals are among 16 markets that have beaten the national average, with regional areas Cessnock (880 per cent), Byron (845 per cent), Noosa (800 per cent), Tweed (780 per cent) and Bega (780 per cent) even outpacing Brisbane and Hobart.

In comparison, the laggards have grown at a third of this pace with Mt Isa identified as the worst market after recording growth of just 250 per cent, followed by Kalgoorlie (300 per cent) and Alice Springs (320 per cent).

The percentage differential from top to bottom in this detailed analysis reflects the cyclical nature of property, challenging local conditions and

several major setbacks that have hit the broader market since the turn of the century.

“Property markets in literally every Australian jurisdiction experienced multiple lean years over the period,” says Simon Pressley, the head of research at Propertyology.

Notably, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008 led to a major market correction that lasted for years, while more recently there was the disruption from COVID-19 and the subsequent boom led by a surge in postpandemic immigration.

Even Mt Isa had its buoyant times at one stage, with Propertyology noting that the mining town posted gains of 110 per cent in the wake of the GFC and was among the top performers between 2006 and 2010, sitting just behind Port Hedland (200 per cent) and Karatha (155 per cent).

The resources boom, which at the time was responsible for a two-speed economy, was a golden era for Queensland and Western Australia and a critical factor in this growth.

Meanwhile, the prized markets of Sydney and Melbourne have emerged as capital city underperformers over the past 25 years with gains of 540 per cent and 485 per cent respectively – although it must be noted that they did come off a higher price base than both Brisbane and Hobart.

Sydney and Melbourne started off the first quarter of this century on a weak note with gains of 55 per cent and 65 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2005.

Mr Pressley notes they were the only capitals to fall short of producing gains of 80 per cent or more over this five-year period, while Hobart and Brisbane had gains of 145 per cent and 120 per cent respectively.

Weak local conditions have continued to take their toll on Melbourne which finished off the 25-year period as the worst performer of all capitals with growth of 20 per cent between 2021 and 2025.

However, Mr Pressley sums up the past five years as a game changer for the Australian property market when buyers threw out the rule book on how to live their lives and where to buy.

“The considerable challenges associated with being cooped up in COVID cocoons created an enforced circuit breaker from the rat race routine,” Mr Pressley says of the pandemic-led boom.

“Meanwhile, every level of government threw unpresedented amounts of money at the economy.

“People engaged in lateral thinking and households reevaluated their core priorities.

“It drove new habits, with lifestyle quality at the forefront.

“Despite its lowest population growth in over 100 years, Australia saw an all-time record high 644,000 properties purchased in 2021.”

The Propertyology analysis puts into perspective the current national property boom which, according to research group Cotality, is set to continue in 2026.

Cotality’s head of research Tim Lawless notes that there is ‘very little downside risk’ priced into expectations for the market this year with 87 per cent of respondents to an industry survey expecting dwelling values to rise, while only 3.5 per cent expect prices to fall.

A healthy cohort of nearly half of respondents, or 44 per cent, expect price growth of more than 5 per cent nationally this year.

In a final note, Propertyology points out that capital growth may have boosted the wealth of Australian households over the past 25 years, but it has been equally rewarding for state and federal government coffers.

“During the first year of the last 25 years, buyers were taxed $6 billion in stamp duty charges on real estate conveyances,” says Mr Pressley.

“The size of that ‘mobility restriction tax’ progressively increased to an estimated $30 billion in 2025.

“Moreover, capital gains tax and land taxes (both of which are only payable by property investors) increased from $9 billion to approximately $50 billion in 2025.”

Vision REALISED

From blueprint to waterfront reality: Marina Point Apartments ready to welcome residents.

AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING, consultation and construction, the vision behind Marina Point Apartments is entering its most tangible phase yet.

With settlements just around the corner at Hope Island’s newest waterfront community, finishing touches are now underway as developer Rick Sheida and his team prepare to welcome the first residents.

Internally, the transformation from construction site to completed residences is all but complete.

Lobby furnishings have been installed, common areas are being detailed and cleaned, and the hoist that once defined the building’s construction phase has now been removed.

For builder developer Rick Sheida, the milestone represents more than the completion of its first building.

It marks the realisation of a long-held vision to create an exclusive, waterfront residential community defined by space, outlook and amenity.

“To see the scaffolding come down, the interiors complete and the lobby come to life is very rewarding,” Rick said.

“The vision for Marina Point is no longer conceptual.

“It’s ready to be lived in and soon to be thoroughly enjoyed by our first ever residents.”

Imminent home owners Timothy and Kerri-Anne said the decision to purchase a property within Marina Point marked a significant life transition.

“For us, this isn’t just an address – it’s the start of a new chapter,” Kerri-Anne said.

“What really struck us about Marina Point Apartments was the Hope Island location.

“When we were talking to the sales team, we realised we were becoming part of a community, not just purchasing an apartment.”

Having previously explored other off-theplan opportunities without committing, the couple said the experience at Marina Point felt markedly different.

“We had spoken to some other developers and it just wasn’t the same,” Kerri-Anne said.

“Here we didn’t feel like we were being sold a unit off-the-plan.

“We were being sold a lifestyle and that was really important.”

For Kerrie-Anne, confidence in the builder and developer was critical.

“I work in the property industry and hear so many horror stories, so ensuring there was a quality developer behind the project was essential,” she said.

Transitioning from their larger family home, the couple do not see themselves as compromising.

“The size of the unit is fantastic and exactly what we need for this stage of our life.

“We say we’re not downsizing, but rightsizing,” Kerri-Anne said.

“The lifestyle is exactly what we wanted and we expect it’s going to be like living in a resort every day.”

Timothy, who previously worked in the navy, said the waterfront location was a natural drawcard.

“I’m in my happy place when I’m beside the water,” he said.

“We have all of these amazing facilities so I’ll be able to get back into swimming, go to the gym, sauna and live in a really nice environment.

“I can’t wait to move into our apartment, sit on our balcony and just watch over the water.”

While attention is firmly on the upcoming settlements of Building 1, activity across the broader Marina Point site remains at full pace.

Construction of the second stage is progressing steadily, with concrete slab pours now occurring on a regular program.

The year ahead is expected to deliver significant structural advancement, with 2026 shaping up to be a defining period for the waterfront community.

As the most eastern-facing building within the Marina Point masterplan, Building 2 is set to capture the most expansive river views available and will also overlook the future private marina.

Designed with boating enthusiasts in mind, the marina will offer bridge-free access to the ocean and deep-water berths capable of accommodating flybridges, catamarans and vessels up to 25 metres in length.

Adding to Marina Point’s progress, two- and three-bedroom display apartments are also now complete and available for private viewings.

Both configurations are north-to-water and feature high-end finishes.

The well-appointed apartments also include European appliances, butler's pantries, furnishable balconies, expansive bedrooms and floor-to-ceiling glazing that flood in natural light.

Development and Sales Manager Reza Niari said the generous proportions have strongly resonated with local buyers accustomed to detached homes.

“There’s a genuine sense of scale when you walk into these apartments,” Reza said.

“The ceiling heights, the width of the living areas and the connection to the water create a feeling of openness that’s difficult to replicate.

“Often people have to sell down their statement pieces of furniture before moving to an apartment, but that’s not the case here.

“Marina Point’s units have been carefully designed so that heirloom furniture and larger pieces of art can still be accommodated.”

Reza added the countdown to Building 1 signals the culmination of years of groundwork.

”Seeing Marina Point transition from vision to reality and knowing our residents will soon be enjoying the lifestyle we set out to create is extremely exciting,” Reza added.

“It is going to be a very busy few months but we are confident about what lies ahead and we’re looking forward to delivering on our promise.”

As a gated masterplanned community, Marina Point lies across 2.2 hectares with 370m of absolute water frontage and will feature four buildings upon completion.

Marina Point’s Wellness Pavilion is already complete and features a 25m lap pool, golf simulator room, yoga studio, fully equipped Technogym and infrared sauna.

Additional resort style amenities include a Resident’s Club on the water’s edge, BBQ facilities and more than one hectare of landscaped gardens and green space overlooking the water.

Limited apartments remain with prices starting from $1.3 million for a three-bedroom configuration to more than $4 million for 319sqm penthouses – all with two or three secure car parks.

The Marina Point Showroom is located onsite at 72 View Line Terrace in Hope Island, open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. marinapointapartments.com.au

SpatialAWARENESS

Feng Shui Master Kelly McCloskey explains how intentional design and ancient wisdom can set the tone for the New Year.

AS WE WELCOME THE NEW YEAR, many homeowners undergo a familiar ritual: decluttering cupboards, refreshing interiors and creating space for new beginnings.

While most observe these traditions instinctively, Australian-based Feng Shui Master Kelly McCloskey approaches them with strategic precision, blending classical Chinese philosophy with contemporary design to shape environments that support prosperity, wellbeing and long-term performance.

Recognised as one of the country’s leading Feng Shui practitioners and an internationally accredited Master with the International Feng Shui Association, Kelly has built a reputation for elevating Feng Shui beyond decorative symbolism.

Her work spans premium residential homes, commercial developments and high-value property portfolios, where she advises on how the built environment influences both lifestyle and investment outcomes.

Kelly’s pathway into Feng Shui was not born from spirituality, but from property performance.

Across nearly two decades in the real estate industry, she began noticing recurring patterns.

Certain homes repeatedly cycled through owners experiencing similar challenges: financial pressure, relationship strain or ongoing health concerns.

While architectural quality and location remained strong, something deeper appeared to influence the occupant experience.

“In real estate, we focus heavily on location and finishes, but far less on how a home actually performs for the people living in it,” Kelly explains.

“Time and again, I saw beautiful properties in blue-chip locations linked to financial stress, relationship breakdowns or health challenges, and that’s when I realised design alone isn’t enough.”

This curiosity led her to formal classical Feng Shui training and, in 2013, the launch of her consulting practice.

Now operating under her own name, Kelly McCloskey has redefined the discipline for a modern audience, replacing superstition with spatial analysis, environmental psychology and strategic planning.

Having recently stepped into the Lunar New Year, the art of Feng Shui presents an opportunity to reset the energy of your space.

Kelly shares her top tips for preparing the home this new year, one with a surge of bright, fiery vitality.

Rather than dramatic renovations, she emphasises subtle yet intentional adjustments that align with the annual energetic cycle.

Clearing physical clutter remains foundational, as stagnant items can mirror stagnant momentum in life.

The living and dining areas are considered energetic hubs of the home, shaping both movement and mood.

Clear, open surfaces allow energy to circulate freely, supporting a feeling of ease and possibility.

Introducing a small number of intentional accents, such as a sculptural piece, living greenery, fresh flowers or a gently scented candle, helps cultivate warmth while maintaining balance and flow.

She also encourages reviewing bedroom layouts, particularly bed positioning – as this space directly influences rest, relationships and long-term health.

Similarly, Kelly often assesses home offices to ensure they support clarity, focus and financial growth.

Another cornerstone of her approach involves analysing Flying Star charts, a classical Feng Shui method that maps energetic patterns across a property each year based on its orientation and construction period.

By understanding where supportive or challenging energies fall, Kelly tailors recommendations such as material changes, colour balancing or subtle spatial shifts.

Designing for Flow and Opportunity

Central to Kelly’s philosophy is the concept of flow, how energy, movement and natural elements travel through and work harmoniously to support daily life.

Natural light, in particular, plays a powerful role in this equation.

Thoughtfully placed windows, skylights and reflective surfaces can invigorate a space, while poor lighting can stagnate energy and affect mood.

“The windows are the eyes of the home," Kelly explains.

She encourages homeowners to observe how light moves through their property across the day, using it as a guide to activate or soften different zones.

Entryways also hold significant importance, acting as the energetic gateway to a home.

For Lunar New Year, Kelly advises ensuring entrances are clear, welcoming and well-maintained, symbolically allowing new opportunities to enter.

“Your façade and front garden play a pivotal role in Feng Shui,” she explains.

“Energy behaves much like people – it’s naturally drawn to beauty.

“A well-kept garden and entry don’t just look good; they actively invite opportunity and momentum into the home.”

A New Year, A New Alignment

Kelly’s advice increasingly resonates with developers and property investors who recognise that well-considered design extends beyond aesthetics.

By integrating Feng Shui principles early in planning stages, projects can optimise spatial functionality, market appeal and long-term asset value.

As households welcome the Lunar New Year, Kelly encourages Australians to view their homes as active partners in shaping the year ahead.

“Your environment genuinely sets the tone for your life,” she says.

“We spend more time in our homes than anywhere else, and when that space isn’t working with you, progress can feel slow or stalled despite your best efforts.

“When a home is properly aligned, it removes friction and allows momentum to build, supporting clearer thinking, stronger wellbeing, healthier relationships and improved financial flow.”

In an era where design increasingly prioritises wellness and performance, Kelly’s work spans design reviews, construction audits and pre-sale optimisation strategies, ensuring homes not only look exceptional but feel intuitively aligned for future occupants.

These patterns highlighted the link between environment and experience, inspiring her to pursue classical Feng Shui as a strategic tool.

Today, as an internationally accredited Master, she applies evidence-based Feng Shui to enhance performance, functionality, and long-term value in premium projects, helping individuals and businesses optimise spaces for success, wellbeing, and abundance. kellymccloskey.com

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

Choose to invest in yourself now, as your efforts will succeed. Consider ways to boost your health with a less stressful schedule. This could also boost your work and finances. You'll be drawn to focus more on your home life or a property in April, although you must avoid overspending. A key relationship is due for change. Romance could thrive on April 11, 12 and 24.

Stars

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

March sees you altering some of your shared duties and commitments, such as the space you share at home and your finances, including your tax commitments. It's likely you'll begin a fresh arrangement in a shared matter at work, especially around the new moon on March 19 and the full moon on April 2. Be prepared to consult experts and advisors if you feel this is necessary.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

Find ways to pace yourself, as it is likely to be a busy time. March and April have much to give you, such as a fresh opportunity or a lucky break. Early March will be ideal for romance, so be sure to plan a date. Expenses, especially to do with a property, will merit attention. Ensure you avoid gambling, both financially and emotionally, especially in early March.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

Developments at work could take you into fresh territory, so be prepared to consider options and to negotiate your terms. This is potentially an expansive time for you, in which you could move forward. You may even be surprised by developments, especially towards the end of March. If your love life has been at a standstill, this too could progress, so be proactive.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

This is an excellent month to broaden your influence in whichever field you would like to. You may even be surprised by opportunities that boost your status and options that can improve finances. However, some developments in these areas and at work may be triggering, so ensure you maintain perspective. The full moon on April 2 brings a fresh chapter at home or with family.

CANCER

22 Jun – 23 Jul

You're in a strong position to attain treasured goals, so be diligent and trust in your luck. Above all, be positive, as the more dynamic you are, the better your months ahead will be. Mid-March will be a good time for romance and the arts, so organise activities that open your heart. April brings the chance to spruce up your environment, and some lucky Crabs will enjoy a trip.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

Romance and key commitments take the focus now. If you're single, you may meet someone significant. Top dates for romance are March 7–9 and 20–26. You may even be drawn to make a personal commitment. Couples will gain the chance to reinvigorate their relationship, although some may see that separate paths are viable. Work can progress now, so be proactive.

LIBRA

24 Sept – 23 Oct

You'll appreciate regaining a sense of direction as your outlook improves. Jupiter will enable you to make tracks both at work and financially, so keep an eye out for opportunities. A favourable development at work or a fresh health schedule will help boost energy. The Libran full moon on April 2 will encourage you to look for more balance in your usual routine.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

The key to peace of mind now is to find the balance between your working hours and home time. Another key is to focus more explicitly on your health and wellbeing, or that of someone close. This is also a good time to consider how to establish a better slush fund for household expenses so you are not caught short. March 5–9 and April 11–18 will draw you to romance.

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

Opportunities to broaden your horizons will arise, but you must be sure to choose your activities carefully. You will gain from bonding with those you love by undertaking an activity such as a trip, a family get-together or simply a change of pace early in April. However, strong emotions are also likely around the full moon on April 2, so maintain perspective where possible.

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

Pluto's planetary aspects could make this an intense time. Nevertheless, it is also a good period to make big changes if you wish. You're best to avoid rash decisions and to seek expert or trusted advice whenever needed. If energy levels have been low, you'll be pleased to regain your mojo, which could lead to improvements both in your love life and at work.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

The lunar eclipse on March 3 may draw out strong emotions in you or someone close. You may simply realise that you're ready for change in a key personal or business relationship. Be realistic, and make methodical plans. You'll be drawn to invest in yourself. A financial development will require focus and could mean better cash flow, but also potentially higher expenses.
