Jennifer Lawrence looks set to earn an Oscar nomination for her intense performance as a mum struggling with post-partum depression in Die My Love. WORDS JENNY DAVIS / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE OSCAR-WINNING ACTRESS Jennifer Lawrence is being tipped to land an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the new film Die My Love. She previously won the Best Actress statuette for her role in Silver Linings Playbook in 2012. Jennifer stars alongside Robert Pattinson in Die My Love, which is directed by Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay and boasts Martin Scorsese as one of its producers. The movie is a psychological drama/thriller, but ultimately a profound exploration of how a relationship can change and evolve. We’ve heard the story that Martin Scorsese read this novel, then sent it to you but when did you start thinking about this as a character you wanted to play? It was clearly an extremely special character. It was really just so profound and powerful, and reminded me of A Woman Under the Influence, [which starred] Gena Rowlands. So I knew the character was very special, but I couldn’t really figure out how to crack the movie, because it was all from inside her head ... it was like her inner dialogue.

So I sat with it for a while, and then it just kind of clicked that it wasn’t meant to be literal or linear – that it was poetry. Once I realised that it was meant to be poetry, then Lynne Ramsay was the only person that I thought of to direct it, because she is a poet. You’re a producer on this as well. Can you talk a little bit about the process of putting it together. We reached out to Lynne and she said ‘yes’, which was crazy. And finding financing was hard, because it’s a female issue, and that is just complex in all societies [laughs]. You know, it’s rated R, and it’s about post-partum depression – people weren’t throwing money at us – so it took a second, but once we had the financing, and Lynne was attached, it’s the only movie I’ve ever been a part of that every first choice of casting said ‘yes’. I mean, Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte, Rob, LaKeith [Stanfield], you know, all of these are our dream list, and they all said ‘yes’. >> issue 112

And I started working with him when I was like 20 so I’m really grateful for that because I don’t think that I got used to just a one way of doing it. I normally just adapt when I get there to what the directors are doing. And I think it’s certainly a lot more fun when you don’t exactly know what’s going to happen that day. I mean, the scene where he proposes, that was written as we were just flipping burgers and then he asked me. But Lynne saw the light in the field and then was like, ‘Go crawl in the field’. There were things like that all the time and that’s what working with a real auteur is like. Music is such a huge part of the film – was that present on set? She’s the only director I’ve ever worked with that plays music on set so that was so cool. She creates a vibe and then you’re kind of living in it. Like when my character, after the wedding, loses it, for lack of a better term. We were about to call action and I’m trying to map out, because also, we were using reversal film stock, which is really rare so you can’t really waste that stuff. So I was trying to choreograph with the camera guys before we started rolling, like, ‘I think I’m going to go over here to the table and then I’m going to kind of go over there’. And then Lynne just came over and started playing this Sleigh Bells song, ‘Infinity Guitars’. And it immediately got me into the headspace. It was really cool.

What was your way into your character and what she was going through? I went back and forth. I mean, it matters if it matters to you, you know? What I love so much about all of Lynne’s movies is that she’s not pushing something. It’s like she’s experiencing something by herself and she’s not really concerned about the audience. She’s very unflinching. So I think what ’s great about this movie is the space that it allows for you to project your experience. Even myself and doing the movie, I had different moments of it where it was like, ‘Okay, this is from post-partum, this is from the way that our relationship has changed since having a baby and being parents and the inequality that

has arrived in our relationship and the captivity’ to, ‘Maybe this is something that she’s always struggled with’. And I think the truth is, it doesn’t matter. I think post-partum was an engine for this rich and deep character study on these extremely interesting characters going through something really extraordinary. Lynne Ramsay, the director, works with improv. She works very impulsively – what was that experience like for you? It’s also like reverse improv, where you memorise five pages of dialogue and then she’s like, ‘I get it. Don’t say any of it’. [laughs] David O. Russell [Silver Linings Playbook etc.] definitely prepared me for staying on your toes.

Obviously, there is this element of what is in her head and what is she experiencing? Was it important for you in the moment to sort of figure that out for yourself and then let the audience decide on their own? Well, in the moment, all of it was real to me. There was no moment when we were shooting where I was aware, like me, Jennifer, was aware that any of it was in Grace’s mind. I’m not sure if that was on purpose because I remember watching it and being like, ‘Oh’. So it’s hard to tell what is a choice. But yeah, for Grace, it is all real and it is all factual. And then I saw it in a bunch of different ways. It was just wild watching it. It was the first movie that I’ve ever made as a mother, like being a mother, and I was pregnant. Then I watched it when I was nine months pregnant. And then I watched it after my baby was born.

How did she help you? Just reminding me... because I would say ‘No one would wake up their baby because they’re bored’. And she’d reply, ‘She doesn’t give a shit.’ And I was like, ‘Uh oh, right. Okay. Yeah. She doesn’t give a shit.’ Even the baptism thing, obviously I would think, ‘Oh, this might be scary for the baby and the baby might not want to get wet. So I ’m not going to get the baby wet’. But to Grace, this is a baptism and this really pure place for her so that is what she would do. issue 112

You’re a mother, you had a two-year-old, you were pregnant. How difficult was it to let Grace go at the end of work days? I never struggle with that. If anything, I struggle with not remembering that I have to memorise lines tomorrow. The hard part for me was that I’ve always used my instincts and I’ve always relied on my instincts. So for, I don’t know how long I’ve been doing this, like 20 years, I’ve just like been like, ‘Oh, well, my instinct is to do this’. But this was the first time I’m playing a mum and I am a mum. So my instincts were confusing me and I had to separate what I would do as opposed to what Grace would do. That was complicated, but Lynne was obviously helpful.

Can you talk about the volatility with Rob? Well, doing fight scenes like that – it requires a lot of trust. It’s like sex scenes – hopefully if you’re with somebody who you trust, you don’t worry about who’s underneath it. I felt like I could just deal with Jackson and I could say whatever I want, without worrying about Rob underneath. And I felt like we could both run, and he gave me a lot more to push up against. Because I think in the script, Jackson is more kind of all galled over by her wins, and he was stronger so that added a lot.

Did that sort of change the way you thought that the audience might experience it too? Yeah. I think it really helped me let go of that part. Because when you work really hard on something and it’s really personal, honest to God, it feels violating that all of you guys have seen it [laughs]. That people will watch it, discuss it. It’s just like, what? So, of course, when a movie is coming out, it’s hard to fight being controlling of that, of exactly how people are going to see it. And I think because I’ve seen it so many different ways, it really helped me let go of that. Every time I get asked the question, ‘What do you hope audiences take away?’ I’m like, I plead the fifth. It’s really about your own projection.

colourful CAREER One of Queenstown’s most talented artists, Angus Watson has been creating vibrant canvases for over three decades. TALENTED NEW ZEALAND ARTIST Angus Watson never planned to be a painter. In fact, for many years in the early 1980s he made headlines in Queenstown for his quirky and highly successful Sound and Light Museum which highlighted Central Otago’s goldrush. However, when a friend asked him for a painting of her hens back in 1988, Angus’s career moved in a very different direction. “From there it took off and soon people were asking for paintings of their animal, their children and anything in between,” he recalls. “I realised maybe I was on to something and I could make a living as an artist.” For the past three decades he has committed to his craft, creating stunning works of art using his preferred watercolour medium. >>

“I’ve been painting for over 30 years and still love it,” Angus admits. “I like to paint most days and I don’t have much of a plan when I start, I just jump in. “Sometimes it’s effortless and other times it’s awful and I have to get rid of it quickly or every time I see the canvas, it depresses me. “When a painting does not work, I often paint over the top if it – upside down.” Although he focuses on landscapes and figure painting, Angus says the subject matter is not important – it is just something on which to hang the colours. “I find colours such fun as they can make you feel great just by bouncing off each other. “I suppose I try to get the essence of a subject as simply as I can, and I find a nice wide brush helps keep it simple.” With his paintings now hanging on walls around the world, Angus still sells most of his work from his picturesque studio in Queenstown, New Zealand however he has a presence online for out of town or overseas buyers. “Painting is my form of meditation and keeps me happy,” he says. “I encourage people interested in seeing and talking about my work to visit my Dalefield studio but it is always best to book an appointment ahead to ensure I am available. “One of the things I enjoy most is meeting people who have a likeminded interest in art.”

IF YOU HAD TOLD ME 20 YEARS AGO – back when I was racing between live crosses for the evening bulletin with a baby on my hip – that my greatest reinvention would arrive in my forties, I probably would’ve laughed. Or cried. Or both. Like most modern women, I’ve lived enough lives for five people: TV presenter, single mum, sports reporter, business owner, wellness student, partner, and most recently – mother again, almost two decades later. Reinvention isn’t something I went looking for. It found me. And like all the best plot twists, it arrived at a moment when I thought I finally had everything ‘sorted’. Life, however, had other plans. A relationship breakdown, a total reset, and a very real identity shift later, I found myself rebuilding from the ground up with a toddler, a teenager, and a determination I didn’t know I had. What most people don’t see when they look at my life today is the chapter that came before it – the one that quietly shaped the woman I’ve become. I walked away from a financially, emotionally and physically abusive relationship, and in the vulnerable aftermath, I found myself stepping into a new one with someone who, like many of us, had a past marked by lessons, missteps and growth. Our beginning wasn’t perfect, but it taught me something invaluable: that people can change, relationships can evolve, and that second chances – offered with clarity, boundaries and self-worth – can lead to something steady, healthy and good. Today, the man I share my beautiful girls with is proof that imperfect starts can still become strong foundations. That experience also shaped something I write about in my upcoming book, Plan B: the importance of holding onto your identity, no matter what season of life or love you’re in. It’s why I chose to keep my last name – not as a rejection of anything, but as a commitment to myself. A quiet promise that my story, my voice and my future would never again be lost inside someone else’s shadow. Time to turn over a new leaf and set fresh goals. But where should we start? Social media reaches around five billion people … and it's full of conflicting and confusing messages about health and diet: superfoods, fasting, eliminating carbs, protein requirements per meal, juice cleanses, and so on. Everyone has an opinion, each containing snippets of information, often out of context, yet packaged to entice us. There is so much data available that it’s hard to discern what is important amongst the sea of static. It’s time to turn away from ‘sparkly ball’ marketing to seek advice from a professional about the key principles we should concentrate on to live a healthier life in 2026. Firstly, dietitian Julie Albrecht says, we need to understand that good health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental and social well-being. “Aging is a multi-dimensional biological process driven by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.

“Aging includes the accumulation of cellular and molecular damage, loss of tissue homeostasis, and the impairment of regenerative capacity, which together contribute to the increased risk of age-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and metabolic syndromes," Julie explains. “Good health is about slowing down and reversing the aging process by supporting how our body functions. “We are most likely motivated to change our health habits because of our external appearance; however good health is more fundamental than that. “It has to do with how our lifestyles and environments influence our ‘epigenome’, or what’s happening to us internally in our cell structure, which represents 80 per cent of our health outcomes. "The other 20 per cent is hereditary.” According to Julie, it is all about changing our mindset to prioritise our health and taking action. “In our lives, we are constantly juggling our commitments to work, family and social connections," Julie tells me.

“Our life plates are often full to overflowing so each of us needs to prioritise our own self-care by identifying the key components that support our health and wellbeing and placing these at the centre of our plate, developing strategies to sustain their central place. “Health care is self-care,” adds Julie. “The human body is resilient. It has the capacity for renewal and recovery if we undertake practices that support it. “We have the capacity to invest in ourselves, to optimise healthy practices so we are as well as we can be.” Your journey will be different from everyone else’s, yet it follows the same principles that increase longevity: • Eat a nutrient dense diet of whole, minimally processed food and drink, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins. Seek an energy balance between your food intake and what is used by your body. (Michael Pollan’s mantra comes to mind: ‘Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.’)

• Move more each day. Try to make exercise a sustainable and enjoyable part of your routine. But let’s start at the beginning when – after an amazing few days in Istanbul – we boarded the Viking Mars to start our Ancient Adriatic Treasures cruise. As luck would have it, we had sailed through Scandinavia on the same ship last year – and the Cove Travel team were able to secure us the exact same cabin for our 15-night adventure. This made our first day on board super relaxed and we took very little time to become reacquainted with her beauty and amenities. One thing that never changes on Viking are the friendly faces and the attention to detail … your favourite wine is on hand as soon as you get to the dinner table, the off-shore excursions run like clockwork and the nightly entertainment is world-class (a big shout-out to our new friend Harry, who didn’t just sing his heart out but declared we were his favourite Aussies every time we ran into him). Our first port of call on this particular journey was the ancient city of Troy where we disembarked for our tour to Gallipoli. Anzac Cove, Lone Pine Cemetary, the New Zealand Memorial at Chunuk Bair… every site seemed more significant and more touching than the last … and each one was a poignant reminder of the many lives lost on this beautiful stretch of Turkish coastline. Of course, a visit to this part of the world wouldn’t be complete without exploring some ancient ruins so the following day saw us in the well-preserved city of Ephesus. Renowned as the home of the Temple of Artemis – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – this once thriving metropolis boasts an awe-inspiring collection of excavations that date back to the 10th century BC. Meandering through the archaic remains of temples, theatres and terrace homes, we were constantly struck by the ingenuity of the early Romans and Greeks. Next came the 'Island Hopping' leg of our voyage, with stops in Rhodes, Crete, Athens, Olympia and Corfu – all beautiful, all memorable and all special in their own unique way. Naturally, The Acropolis was a highlight but, as a sports tragic, the real standout for me was Olympia. Celebrated as the spiritual home of the Olympic Games, the expansive archaeological site evoked a real sense of wonder at the accomplishments of those early athletes – not to mention the skills required to construct the various arenas and stadiums that are still evident to this day. The magnificence of the architecture and the age-less beauty of the buildings was a recurring theme throughout all our shore excursions. This was particularly evident in Kotor, a picturesque seaside town in Montenegro where ancient city walls still protect residents from the towering Dinaric Alps that surround the bay. It was here that I endured a very spectacular (and terrifying) experience when we undertook a pre-booked excursion to Mount Lovćen. >>

Encountering switchback after switchback, I held my breath as the coach slowly wound its way up the extremely steep and extremely scary side of the hill also known as Black Mountain. (Google later informed me that this was one of the 10 most dangerous roads in the world). Admittedly, the view from the top was absolutely stunning, however, it is not something I would do again anytime soon. Thankfully calmer days awaited with Croatia next on the agenda. Here we enjoyed two very special – but very different – experiences on the water. The first, a speedboat ride around the towering medieval walls of Dubrovnik, the second a long lazy cruise up the Cetina River in Split. We also explored both cities by foot and once again marvelled at how well preserved these centuries-old settlements remain. Then it was on to our final destination and the departure point for this cruise, Venice.

After fascinating tours of the nearby islands of Murano (for the glassblowing) and Burano (linen, lace and colourful houses), we enjoyed a few days taking in the sights and sounds of this iconic city. It had been over three decades since my last visit and I was amazed at how little had changed … St Mark’s Square was still buzzing with tourists, the canals were still awash with vessels of all shapes and sizes and a ride on a gondola was still top of my priority list. As with most holidays, the abiding memories are the random little vignettes that unfold along the way. MOTORING JOURNALISTS can get blasé about all the different cars they drive … we move on from one worthy but unremarkable offering to the next. Most mainstream cars don’t differ much and too few stand out. But I was reluctant to hand back the Genesis GV70 SUV. This car pulled plenty of attention. Many people asked what make it was – few had heard of the Genesis brand – and admired its classy appearance in satin-finish charcoal paint and lush leather interior. I believe first impressions of cars count a lot with prospective buyers; this Genesis was a hit. So what are you getting when you’re buying a Genesis? The Genesis make is a luxury offshoot of the Hyundai industrial group – everything from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis cars to ships, heavy equipment and oil refining – and is only 10 years old.

Think of it as Korea’s equivalent of the Toyota luxury division Lexus. So while the Genesis name is relatively new, it’s backed by one of the world’s biggest car makers (and a 5-year warranty). Although Australian sales are still modest, the Genesis line-up of two sedan and three SUV models is enjoying good wraps for looks, luxury, quality and overall technical prowess. And not to say value for money. The mid-size GV70 may be considered an alternative in specification to European SUVs such as the Audi A5, BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC, but beats them on value. Almost unusually in this era of rising hybrid and battery car sales, all but one of the GV70 range is petrol-powered. Prices start from $78,700 and rise to $100,200 for the range-topping 3.5T Signature Sport with V6 engine as reviewed (the EV costs $132,800).

If you think that the GV70 is a good looker, it’s even better inside. Seat upholstery is sumptuous quilted leather and other surfaces are finished to a similarly high standard. This is a very inviting and comfortable cabin. Well-equipped, too. A single, 27-inch screen dominates the fascia with infotainment and instrument graphics, which can be selected to suit personal preferences for what, how and where data is displayed. There’s a bright and clear heads-up display that projects information such as speed and directions on to the base of the windscreen, perfectly in the line-of-sight. Choosing the 3.5T Signature Sport delivers all the fruit, as car salesmen say. In the case of the Genesis, this means more than fancy baubles – there’s some seriously ingenious tech here.

Any buyer heading for a German showroom should take a swerve into Genesis before deciding on a purchase.

DESPITE CONTINUING scepticism about electric vehicles, the shift is clearly happening. But buyers are increasingly avoiding the sudden change from petrol to electric by choosing hybrid models, an intermediate solution in which the two power sources are paired to reduce fossil-fuel consumption and emissions without having to forsake the range security of the service station pump. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) sales surged 130.6 per cent year-to-date to the end of November, while sales of petrol cars fell 9.5 per cent. That proves we’re gradually becoming more used to the EV concept, even if still reluctant to take the final step to full transition. In a further boost, owners of PHEVs and EVs will be able to reduce their home electricity bills through the Federal Government’s new Vehicle-Grid Network, which will allow spare battery power to be sold into the national grid. Using car electricity to power houses or 240 Volt devices is already becoming increasingly popular.

A year of growth ahead, but it's likely to be more subdued. WORDS NICK NICOLS

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR brings into focus the fortunes of the property market over the past 12 months, and what we can expect in 2026. The short answer is more of the same as in 2025 – another year of growth, although the consensus is at a slower pace. Of course, the past year was aided by some big levers, namely three cuts to the official cash rate and an accelerated federal government first-home owners initiative in the form of a 5 per cent deposit scheme. The pushbacks to growth in 2026 are fairly evident. Stubbornly high inflation could lead to a hold on interest rates, at best, and a potential increase, at worst. However, some analysts are still forecasting a possible cut this year, which highlights the level of uncertainty ahead. The other pushback is the mix of local market dynamics that have led to big gains in the smaller capitals over 2025, while our two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, continue to lag.

The big winner of 2025 was Darwin, the capital that is often forgotten because of its size and remoteness. Property researcher Cotality’s National Home Value Index reveals Darwin enjoyed a year of massive price growth by rising 17 per cent in the 12 months to the end of November. Perth came a strong second at 13 per cent with Brisbane not far behind at 12.8 per cent. Sydney and Melbourne were up 5.1 per cent and 4.2 per cent respectively. Cotality’s research director Tim Lawless says the divergent growth trend between the country’s biggest cities and the smaller state capitals has been playing out each year since 2023. “The skew towards the mid-sized capitals is especially evident in Perth, where listings are holding more than 40 per cent below average, buyer demand is elevated and the 2.4 per cent monthly rise in dwelling values has added just over $21,000 to the median in November, roughly $5,000 per week,” he says.

Darwin is currently seen as the most affordable of Australia’s capital cities and that is attracting both investors and owneroccupiers who are willing to make the move to the far north. However, should the past year’s price gains be sustained, the affordability gap for Darwin could close quickly, just as we have seen elsewhere in recent years – with Brisbane a prime example. After years lagging Sydney and Melbourne and leading the pack in terms of capital city affordability on the east coast, Brisbane’s median value of $1.015 million at the end of November, based on Cotality’s measure, sits well above Melbourne’s $823,495 and below Sydney’s $1.269 million. PropTrack’s Home Price Index tells the same story as Cotality’s Home Value Index, namely that Perth, Darwin and Brisbane are the nation’s top-performing capitals. According to PropTrack’s methodology, Perth, with an increase of 15.5 per cent, edges out

Darwin and Brisbane in the growth stakes at 14.1 per cent and 13.7 per cent respectively. PropTrack also points out that Western Australia, up 13.2 per cent, and Queensland, up 12.5 per cent, led the regions. The usual culprits are behind the gains, which PropTrack puts down to ‘lower interest rates, increased borrowing capacities and a recovery in sentiment’ – supporting a ‘reacceleration’ of the property market in 2025. The 2025 gains were well ahead of forecasts offered by many analysts a year ago. Dr Shane Oliver, AMP’s chief economist, is one analyst who admits he got it wrong at the end of 2024 when he forecast subdued price growth of 3 per cent for 2025. This compares with national price growth of 7.5 per cent, according to Cotality’s data – or more than twice as much as the respected economist had expected. “Historically rate cuts have been associated with an upswing in property prices unless

there has been a recession and sharply rising unemployment,” says Dr Oliver, adding that 2025 was no exception as prices started rising from the first official rate cut in February. But the AMP chief economist is confident the pace of growth will start to slow in 2026, particularly because the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) appears to be at the bottom of its interest rate cycle and as more analysts contemplate a potential increase in the official rate this year. Dr Oliver also says the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s (APRA) efforts to cut back on risky or speculative lending and affordability is ‘now worse than ever’. So, he sees both the interest rate uncertainty and APRA’s actions likely to dampen demand this year. “On the interest rate outlook we think another RBA rate cut (in 2026) is still possible, but it will require a run of softer inflation numbers back below target and higher unemployment,” he says.

“And given the early stage of the economic recovery it’s arguably too early to expect the RBA to raise rates. That’s more likely a 2027 story. “Either way this will leave mortgage rates at their cycle low, well above their record lows seen in 2021 of around 2 to 3 per cent. “As such, the buying capacity of home buyers is expected to remain below the levels seen in 2021-22. “This will limit the upside in property prices.” Dr Oliver is forecasting property prices to grow between 5 and 7 per cent in 2026, although he cautions that housing affordability, which is ‘deteriorating from already very poor levels’, remains a big factor that will keep a lid on gains. “With FOMO running hot in the boom time cities of Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide they are likely to remain the strongest over the next six months,” he adds.

Homeowners are seeking sanctuary, spaces that support well-being, clarity, and calm. Practical organisation, thoughtful storage, and functional planning are essential, not after thoughts. Let’s take a closer look at how this context is shaping the 2026 design trends: what is emerging, what is fading, and what continues to define timeless design.

Colours and Materials

Green is at the forefront of interiors, from bold emeralds to soft sage and the dusty serenity of pale eucalypt. These earthy shades offer grounding and sophistication, pairing naturally with warm whites, which are replacing stark, clinical tones. What’s Out for 2026
