HOW BEAUTIFUL is autumn on the Gold Coast?

It’s no wonder thousands of visitors flock to our shores at this time of year.

For many it’s an annual pilgrimage to attend the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show that takes place at the end of May.

We have been associated with this iconic event for 19 of its 37-year history … and it seems we both get bigger and better every time.

On the opposite side of the world (and the climate spectrum), I recently spent some time in Ireland and I must say their summer left me colder and wetter than I’ve been for a long time.

Luckily, the warmth of the people and the beauty of the scenery more than made up for the inhospitable weather.

Moving on to the rest of the magazine, our celebrity interview in this edition is the legendary Kiefer Sutherland.

While most of us know him for his work as an actor, he is also an accomplished musician with his third album set for release on 29 May.

The 59-year-old chats to us about his song writing, his Americana roots and why he called the new record Grey (apparently the rainy weather in England was the inspiration for this as well).

Kiefer Sutherland has just released his 4th studio album, simply titled Grey.

IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW from Kansas City, 59-year-old actor/musician Kiefer Sutherland talks about his therapeutic new songs, his escape from Hollywood and his admiration for outlaw country artists.

What made you call your new album Grey ? Is that the state of the world we live in?

No, it’s a comment on the songs themselves – and also where we started recording in England, just outside of Bath.

For the time we had in that studio, which was really only about two weeks, it just rained every day.

I was very moved by this tree that was in the field by the studio, which is the tree on the album cover, and I couldn’t help but notice that it was just grey every day.

And the songs that I was singing and the sentiment of what I had written was kind of grey as well.

Whether it was Down Below or even Simpler Time it was kind of looking back at a happy moment, but from a kind of a grey point of view.

And grey is an interesting colour for me in the sense that nothing’s too bright, but nothing’s too dark; it’s just kind of in the middle.

And I felt in the middle a lot in my life, so it was really just a comment on that.

And you´re coming to the conclusion that ‘life will make you so blind, you don’t know what you’ve got to lose’?

Yeah. And that’s a very grey sensibility, right?

It’s the reflection of looking back on things that can happen but maybe haven’t, and just a sense of – kind of a sense of loss that I think is a true line through the record, and those are kind of drab, grey times.

At the same time a song like American Farmers is very specific about how bad their situation is.

Well, certainly the one I’m singing about is, yes. [laughs] I think if you really get into the specifics of the politics then you would have to talk to someone smarter than me, but the situation – certainly in America – about family farms versus corporate farming, that’s a very big deal.

And how that happened in America is complicated, but also unfair.

I live in a small farming community, and I can see the difference between the advantage that the corporate farms have, because they’re farming on such a large scale compared to the smaller independent farms, and my heart goes out to them.

And that’s where that song came from.

What made you write Rage In Me? Is that commentary about everybody being so angry these days?

For me it was a much more – it wasn’t a comment on everybody else, it really was a song about the overemphasis on anger.

It's hard to say, because I wrote it … how I started to write it was because I was actually angry about something [chuckles], and then by the time I was finishing this song, I was laughing about it, and it was kind of a comedy on how angry everybody gets.

But to be honest about the song, it really is a comment on just how angry everybody is, you’re right. >>

Meaning: music is very therapeutic indeed?

Oh, it has to be.

I think any time you write something, whether you write something in a diary just to be able to get it out, to be able to get pen to paper and get a thought or an idea down, that’s absolutely a huge part of doing it.

You have this thought or this idea that you’ve exercised from yourself, and then all of a sudden you can talk about it.

And I think that is just like if someone has a conversation with another friend, it doesn’t have to be a therapist, but to be able to express yourself is always going to be therapeutic on some level.

Is it like a valve – a way to get things out of your system?

A valve, absolutely, yeah.

And once they’re out in the air, somehow – like Rage In Me is a perfect example; I was cross about something and I was writing about the fact that I was cross about something, and once I started writing about it, I couldn’t help but look at myself and kind of laugh about why I was so angry about something.

And so, it’s a reflection of that.

Does that mean that Come Back Down, about life burning and breaking us, is based on first hand experiences?

That’s a really important song for me on a personal level, and so is that first line: ‘Ain’t it funny how life breaks us, even if you’ve got it made’.

I definitely have it made. I’ve been able to do what I’ve wanted to do – as an actor – for my entire life.

I’ve been able to work as a professional actor and I am grateful for that opportunity, but just because I have that doesn’t mean that I haven’t had friends that have passed away way too young.

It doesn’t mean that I have not had loves that have been lost, or that things have happened to my children that I wish I could prevent and stop.

It doesn’t mean that life is easy, and I think in my situation where I’ve been so fortunate, I’m still aware that it doesn’t make it all smooth sailing.

It’s tough and that’s the thing that we have to understand about everybody else, no matter what their circumstance is, they are still trying to get through something.

And I think when we acknowledge that and recognise that, we’re much kinder to other people.

So that song is just really a reflection of an understanding of what humans go through to get from, you know, cradle to grave.

Are you following the outlaw-countrytradition there?

Well, you know, Merle Haggard has always moved me, Johnny Cash has always moved me, Waylon Jennings has always moved me, those artists wrote about things that were honest and real, and it was their perception of life.

In many cases, they would write things that were maybe not very flattering about themselves, and I always respected them for that.

And I’m trying to do my best to follow in the very large footsteps of those writers.

In the sense of: it´s all about honesty?

An effort at it, right?

I think it’s very important to try and be honest, not just when it suits us and when it makes us look good, but trying to be honest even in the times when it doesn’t.

And Come Back Down is kind of a reflection of that for me. >>

Exploding Brilliance

As for Goodbye California: what made you leave California after so many years?

I’ve been in and out of California for at least 35 years, probably 40.

For me it was just a number of things: Covid was a very difficult time for Los Angeles, but I was also – I’m getting older, and I think I really longed for a quieter place and for something that was more simple.

I found a small farm on the east coast, which is back kind of in the area of where I came from, and it was a decision that was not easy to make, because California has been a place that has given me so much.

When I introduce the song I say: ‘This is a fond farewell to a place that made a young man’s dreams come true’.

And I mean every bit of that sentence.

But as we get older, if you’re fortunate enough, your desires change, your wants change, and I found a place that is quiet and makes me happy, and I’m grateful for that.

So, Goodbye California is really honestly a fond farewell to a place that I love, but it was time for me to go.

How has Hollywood and the film industry changed since streaming and Covid?

I don’t think it’s so much about streaming, and I don’t think it’s so much about Covid.

Nothing has been the same after the strike.

I can’t really say who’s to blame for that, but certainly when, 20 years ago I was making 24 in Los Angeles, people were making other shows in Los Angeles, films were being shot in Los Angeles, and now it just seems to be a concerted effort to not shoot in Los Angeles.

I don’t understand why, because I think the best film crews in the world are there.

And I wish I knew more about it, but I don’t. I think it’s very sad, because – as I’ve said before – Hollywood was a mecca for films for the United States, and it’s being dismantled before us, and no one can really explain why.

Well, we’re also lacking great directors like the Rob Reiners and Joel Schumachers of this world, aren´t we?

Well, I think there’re young people coming up that are fantastic filmmakers, and I think that … again … the infrastructure for the industry has changed so much that those people aren’t being given the same opportunities that young filmmakers were given back in the eighties.

I think there’s been so much emphasis on profit and profit margins instead of creating good storytellers, and writers, actors, directors, and really nurturing the industry, that we’ve gotten ourselves into a bit of trouble.

And I have very great hope that every generation wants to be different than the one that came in front of them, so I’m hoping that there are young people – and by that I mean young executives and producers and studio heads as well – that will turn this around.

Hence working with people like Luc Besson in Europe instead?

Well, I mean, I just had the pleasure of working with Luc on a film called Father Joe, and Barthélémy Grossmann who directed the picture and it was one of the best experiences that I’ve had in a very long time.

As an actor you go where the work is, and so yes, I made a film that was in Colombia and I was there for three months, and then I was in Bulgaria for three months, and then Paris for a month, you know?

I’m keenly aware that all of the films that I’ve been doing lately have been not in Los Angeles.

Do you use the downtime when shooting a movie for writing?

For me, I still write songs when I’m moved by something.

As much as I said the songs aren’t really from observations, it always is going to be something I see that moves me and makes me think of something in my heart or in my thoughts, something that can concern me or make me smile.

Those moments are happening all the time, so I might write down a couple lines of something.

I try to write whatever I’m thinking, if something kind of inspires me, I try to write that down right away.

And I might have to come back to it when I have a day off, but I’m open to ideas and writing at any time of the day, any day of the week.

Would you identify as an Americana artist –style-wise?

Yes.

But did you grow up with that music? As a kid of the eighties weren´t you raised on punk, new wave, metal and all that?

I’m absolutely a kid of the eighties.

If you took all the things that I listened to as a young person, the fact that I play Americana music would kind of make you scratch your head.

But the truth is, you know, Americana music –and I’m going to isolate country music and blues, which are the two kinds – and then ultimately jazz, but those were the three forms of music that America was kind of responsible for.

Country music was being written by poor white farmers, and blues was the kind of counteraction, which was being written by African American farmers and artists.

But they were both telling their stories of how tough it was in their lives.

And for me, because I want to tell a story musically, the lyric is very important, and that’s really the extension I have as an actor; I want to tell the story with a script and a director, to be able to write either in blues and/or country music, because they’re very similar, the core structures allow you to tell a story.

When I listen to Johnny Cash sing A Boy Named Sue, there is no misunderstanding what he’s trying to tell you, you know?

Whereas when I listen to Kashmir from Led Zeppelin, it’s up for interpretation.

So, the music that I wanted to play, it was very important that I tell you a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end, and is very direct.

And that’s how I kind of landed as an Americana artist, because style-wise it allowed me to tell a story in the song – if that makes sense.

It’s like the perfect tapestry to paint on, isn’t it?

Yeah, for me – for me.

You know, American Farmer tells a very specific story, and so Americana allows me to do that.

I’m a huge heavy metal fan, but if I were to do it in a heavy metal song, the story would get lost.

So yes, Americana suits me just fine.

Have you ever written any metal songs?

No, but every once in a while, I’ll hit the overdrive button on my guitar and I’ll try some of the songs that I’ve written in the heavy metal thing, and it’s pretty funny.

What about giving them to other artists then?

Marine MAINTENANCE

Australian Marine and Property will ensure your pontoon is safe, secure and in perfect working order.

EARLIER THIS YEAR, a family who live on the water in Sanctuary Cove were notified by their neighbour that something drastic had happened to their pontoon.

After a shift in the tide, the entire structure had rotated more than 180 degrees, with their 50-foot motor yacht coming to rest on the rocks in front of the neighbouring property.

On the recommendation of previous customers, the owners called Australian Marine and Property and an action plan was put in place.

“Typically these problems happen over Christmas and the New Year period when owners want to use their boats and no one is at work,” says Andrew Thom, Managing Director, Australian Marine and Property.

“However, we acted promptly and arranged the fabrication of a new pile bracket, made of heavier materials, and a far more substantial gangway.

“The pontoon bracket was re-installed and the new 9 metre gangway was craned into its new home without any problems.”

The team then carried out a full service on the pontoon and replaced other worn bolts and lock nuts.

The boat itself was relatively undamaged, however, it was put on the hard stand for inspection and a new coat of anti-foul.

“The amount of boat traffic on the Gold Coast has increased 10-fold over the past few years and for those living on the rivers and canals it is vital that you have your pontoon inspected and maintained at least every couple of years,” explains Andrew.

Is it time to purchase an EV?

CAN THERE BE ANY Australian adult who doesn’t have a superseded, useless smart phone or smart watch in a drawer?

That’s the curse of fast-moving modern technology and I think of it every time the subject of electric vehicle longevity is mentioned.

This should be a serious consideration as the Middle East oil crisis pushes more Australians into swapping their petrol- or diesel-fuelled vehicles for new electrified power.

We’ve been used to internal combustion cars lasting almost indefinitely.

Electric vehicles, especially those not from traditional heritage manufacturers, I suspect, may well be sold with reassuring 10-year battery warranties but themselves may not designed to stay on the road much longer.

Technology is moving so fast that no-one will want to own an outdated EV and manufacturers will stop supporting them.

When an EV becomes third- or fourth-hand, will it be viable to keep it?

Meanwhile, the oil crisis finally has cracked the reluctance of many would-be EV buyers; new and used sales have been accelerating since the first missiles hit Tehran.

Vehicle longevity is only one of many unfamiliar considerations buyers face.

Here are some other personal pros and cons about the world of battery-electric, plug-in hybrid or mild hybrid vehicles.

• Do your homework to ensure you choose the most suitable car, not just the one you like the look of. Refer to authoritative websites like evcentral.com.

• Do you even need to make the switch? Go ahead if there are other good reasons to change your car, such as incurable unreliability or end-of-lease, but if it's just for fuel-saving how long will it take – years? – to offset the premature changeover cost?

• If you can afford a top-end model, the Federal Government is due to raise the Luxury Car Tax threshold for electric vehicles from $91,387 to more than $120,000, following its recent trade deal with the European Union. Ask an accountant to suggest the best finance options.

• With technical development moving so fast, it might be wise to buy with a plan to sell long before the warranty expires and secondhand buyer appeal fades faster than an old iPhone.

• EV prices are falling to competitive levels very quickly. Chinese cars and SUVs are excellent value for money, but if you’re looking for ones with character and good dynamic performance, they’re harder to find.

• Don’t feel too pressured to transition to electrification. Your petrol and diesel vehicles will be on the road for decades yet. Remember, trucks, industrial machines, trains and ships still use fossil fuels.

• Investigate the importer’s commitment to aftersales support. More obscure Chinese brands are landing every month (Avatr, Forthing, Lepas, Jetour and more); some are as common and forgettable as toasters and there’s plenty of speculation they won’t survive the long run. Access to trained authorised service dealers and readily-available spare parts is essential. Stick with big brands.

• Fit-for-purpose is the guiding principle in EV purchase. Until charging infrastructure has populated this wide brown land sufficiently, trips to Woop-Woop are risky. But a cheap electric runabout with a range of, say, 400 kms, is a no-brainer for urban and near-city use. Small business operators and tradespersons may find an electric van or ute is ideal for last-minute deliveries or small jobs.

• As the new-sales mix trends inevitably toward e-power, now might be a good time to indulge in a petrol-powered investment-classic –something with solid aesthetic appeal and exclusivity that will never be replaced. Look at the usual list – Australian muscle cars, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari or Mercedes convertibles, or the last-made of anything desirable.

• The ability to conveniently and economically charge your EV is essential. If you have a home garage, you can charge (slowly) from a 240V outlet, or install a fast-charging wall box. Linked to a solar system, preferably with batteries, it can be free. Apartment residents, ask your strata managers what is possible. If your car is street-parked, options are to find public or workplace chargers.

• Some EVs are able to share their spare power with 240V appliances or the main grid.

• Be prepared for an on-line relationship between your car and its maker. Overnight software updates and fixes are common. What happens if you decline these updates is unclear. Meanwhile, the car maker is capturing and monetising your personal and car data.

• You’ll like driving an electric car. They’re fast, smooth, quiet and usually well-equipped inside. Once the charging routine is familiar, range anxiety disappears

EV, PHEV, HYBRID, ICE?

KNOW YOUR WAY around these basic terms when planning for your new car.

Mild hybrid

Popularised by the Toyota Prius since 2009, Mild Hybrid uses a self-charging battery-electric motor to complement a petrol engine when needed or to power the car alone for short distances. Most beneficial in city driving, but economy gains are modest.

Plug-in hybrid

Increasingly popular as a halfway step to full electric, Plug-in hybrid uses a bigger battery that can be charged from an outside source as well as on-board to drive a vehicle for up to, say, 100 kms before the petrol or diesel motor takes over. It provides some pure electric capability and economy benefits while eliminating EV range anxiety, but again, best savings are around town.

Battery electric

Most EVs individually are very good but the industry transition is a work in (slow) progress that limits usability for many drivers. Great around town, but with battery range typically between 300 kms and 550 kms, longer journeys demand planning to chart charging way-points. Charging at home, workplace or public locations dictates convenience and varying electricity costs.

Internal combustion

Oh, wait, we still have these? With more than 100 years’ development behind them, conventional petrol and diesel engines are hugely efficient and reliable, so don’t rush to dump ‘peak internal combustion’, especially for the higher purchase price of electrification.

Why the private register matters

The public market – auction houses, classified listings, dealer websites – captures perhaps 15 per cent of Queensland plate transactions.

The remainder moves through private channels: solicitors, estate managers, and specialist intermediaries.

For this reason, the most accurate valuation of a plate is rarely the last public sale.

It is the last private one.

Take A NUMBER

The quiet economics of a Q – why Queensland’s heritage plates have out-performed almost every tangible asset class in living memory.

QUEENSLAND’S NUMERICAL plates were never designed as collectibles.

They were issued, from 1921 onwards, as a functional artefact of the Motor Vehicles Registration Act – single digits first, then two, then three, and so on.

The state of Queensland could not have anticipated that, a century later, those earliest combinations would become one of the few asset classes entirely immune to new supply.

Scarcity, measured in law

There will never be another Q1. There will never be another Q10. There will never be another Q865.

The register is legally closed.

This, more than anything else, defines the thesis: you are not acquiring a number – you are acquiring an artefact that has already been mathematically exhausted.

The

curve, since 1998

By tracked transactions across the private market, verified Queensland heritage plate sales have compounded at between 11 and 14 per cent annually since 1998.

Over the past decade, that curve has meaningfully outpaced both the ASX 200 (including dividends) and premium Brisbane residential property.

The explanation is straightforward: each transaction occurs against a shrinking pool of willing sellers.

Most early plates are held generationally –passed between parents, children and estates – and most transactions are off-market.

Price discovery is slow, but the direction is uniform.

Since 2007

In 2007, Q Plate Sales acquired a single portfolio of 486 three-digit Q-series plates from the then-dominant dealer in the Queensland market.

That transaction consolidated, in a single afternoon, a pool of heritage plates that had sat largely dormant for more than 50 years.

Nearly two decades later, approximately 150 of those sets remain under Q Plate Sales’ stewardship – each catalogued, each crossreferenced against the 1923 List of Motor Owners in Queensland, and each held for the right custodian rather than the first buyer.

Every plate they release is accompanied by verified provenance: the name of its original motorist, the vehicle it was first attached to, the suburb in which it was registered, and – where the archive allows – the period photograph that places it there.

Q Plate Sales is not a listings website.

They are a Brisbane-based firm that has, for nearly two decades, taken the long view on an asset class most people still misfile as a novelty.

A position, not a purchase

The right Q-plate is not a consumer object. It is an artefact with a defensible provenance, a verifiable scarcity, and a market that has moved in only one direction for 30 years.

ONE OF THE FEW CONSTANTS in the Gold Coast hospitality scene is change.

For those of us invested in the industry, seeing these occur is much like watching a game of chess, with owners or chefs moving the pieces around to new locations on the board.

When former Willow Dining restaurant owner Ian Banghal closed his intimate date night venue in Burleigh Heads at the height of its success, it was a surprise to see him open a new establishment, Rise & Set Restaurant and Café, on the edge of a light industrial estate in Coombabah.

Not only was it a departure from his proven 10-year operation model, but the move also took him from a tourist-dominated locale to an underserviced local area where the café is frequented by the same regulars daily.

To Ian, affectionately known as ‘Chef Choi’, Willow was a dream come true.

As a child growing up in the Philippines, he had spent a lot of time in his mother’s fine dining restaurant, sleeping under the tables, tablecloths brushing the floor around him like the branches of willow trees touching the riverbanks.

In his own little secret world – where the smells of food arriving at the table floated beneath the tablecloths – he was entranced.

Observing the interactions of restaurant life and the people who worked there, he eavesdropped on conversations, all the while dreaming of one day owning his own restaurant.

Even while training and working as an architect in the Philippines, Ian kept his hopes alive, owning a small restaurant before travelling across Europe and studying the culinary arts in Germany.

Ian’s long-held dream of working in a kitchen came to fruition after he emigrated to Australia in 2009 with his friend (and soon-to-be-wife) Anna, who he credits as being his main support, his ‘builder of hope’ and a fundamental element in his success.

In 2015, he opened his own humble restaurant, ‘Willow Dining’ in Burleigh, with his sister as his first employee.

Over its 10-year lifespan, the venue increased in size and popularity from having just a few tables to being the top-ranked local restaurant on Trip Advisor.

While every restaurant and restaurateur is unique, in Ian’s eateries we can see a marriage of both his architectural and culinary skills.

“We could call it ‘foodchitecture’,” Ian tells me, describing his unique ‘double passion’ approach to his restaurants.

Invested in the building structure to the point where he even made the bricks for Willow himself, Ian saw Rise & Set in his mind’s eye long before he opened it.

“I pictured the new venue and put myself in the place of a guest,” Ian explains.

“I even planted these plants at home and watered them each day before they were replanted out here,” he adds.

With its soaring raked ceilings, timber and brick faҫades and eclectic mix of furniture, there’s a welcoming cosiness to the café.

Fanned by gentle breezes and surrounded by greenery, the stunning architectural space is balanced by a collection of rustic objects d'art.

As diners, we feel relaxed and comforted by this familiarity, spending time with friends without feeling the need to move on.

Having visualised many of the dishes before creating them, Ian rises at 3am to begin preparation for the day, overseeing each dish during service before it leaves the kitchen.

There are hints of Willow’s tapas-based food on Rise & Set’s menu.

Lamb Kofta has morphed into Lamb Kofta Salad, Croquettes are common to both menus, while Jerk Chicken has gained a Southern marinade.

The café’s signature dish, the Asian Breaky, stands like a little warrior against hunger, a tower of chorizo patty on a base of Adobo rice topped with roasted tomato, pickled papaya, fried egg, sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, crispy hay and dried shallots.

It’s a reinterpretation of the famous Asian Chorizo, which was served at Willow on a photogenic trio of hanging skewers.

With a compact but encompassing menu spanning both breakfast and lunch, the main commonality between Willow Dining and Rise & Set Restaurant and Café is the labour of love behind each plate, with sauces made in house, secret ingredients pimping the flavour, and stunning presentation leading to gasps of delight as the food is served.

While the kitchen is Ian’s domain, his staff are the team that builds the dream.

These are the people he fed during Covid, delivering groceries to their doors.

In turn, they become part of a family.

“Some employees who started as juniors with us are now professional physiotherapists, teachers and nurses,” he says.

Many keep in contact with Ian, acknowledging the role he has taken in mentoring and supporting them.

“We have an extended family relationship with our former staff.”

So much so, that when Ian opened Rise & Set, some of his employees moved to the northside of the coast to be closer to the café.

While the physical environments and menus of Ian’s restaurants have been distinctively unique, it’s the people (both staff and diners) who make his spaces special.

“Both regulars and tourists dated, married, celebrated their anniversaries and the birth of their children at Willow," Ian tells me.

“They become friends, and events in their lives touch you,” he adds.

“It’s not just about the restaurant but about the relationship with customers.

“At Rise & Set we see the same faces every day … we know their orders and how they like their coffee.”

Now with his own family of two sons, it’s with the extended restaurant family in mind that Ian considers the future.

“I want to open another café so that staff can have reliable jobs, so I can help more people and spend more time with my family.”

In the meantime, he hopes to extend the café’s hours to weekend evening trading to cater for birthdays, family celebrations and christenings, just as he did at Willow.

From the comfort of willow trees beside the river to a restaurant café that welcomes us from the rise of the sun until it sets, Ian has envisaged his eateries as places of community.

And what does he get back in return?

“When customers talk to you and you interact with their lives, it makes the dedication worthwhile,” Ian says.

Take a road trip along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

IT’S BECOME SOMETHING of a tradition over the past two decades that whenever Derek and I travel to Europe we always end the holiday in my spiritual home – and his actual childhood home – Ireland. >>

The visits start with a few days catching up with family in the beautiful coastal city of Wexford before we head off to explore a little more of the country we both love.

Our most recent visit was no exception and this time I had a few items to tick off my bucket list … the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher and the city of Galway.

Of course, Ireland has a way of throwing in some unexpected treasures as well, so my advice to anyone travelling to the Emerald Isle is to allow plenty of time to wander down country lanes and follow any tourist route signage that takes your fancy.

Our road trip started with a leisurely drive, via Waterford and Cork, to the historical town of Killarney in County Kerry.

This picturesque hub was bustling with tourists and we joined the throng, ducking in and out of pubs to enjoy a refreshing ale and traditional live music.

We also made the easy trek to the towering Torc Waterfall and spent time wandering through the magnificent grounds of historic Muckross House.

The following morning we were up bright and early to circumnavigate the Ring of Kerry.

As you can imagine, the scenery in this part of the country is stunning and there are plenty of lookouts, rest stops and photo opportunities signposted along the way that allow you to take in the views and get that perfect shot.

As much as I love sightseeing, I love my football more, so finding somewhere to watch the State of Origin was high on my priority list.

Opening the door of the Roughty Bar in the quaint village of Kenmare, I was delighted to see the game being shown on a screen in the corner.

I’m sure the gruff locals did not have watching a NSW vs Queensland game with two die hard Aussies on their bingo card that day … but they seemed to enjoy it and joined me in celebrating when the Blues won.

I made my way back to the car with a spring in my step (although my Maroons travelling partner was not so happy) and we hit the road to continue our journey.

The first day of summer saw us rugged up in puffer jackets, scarves and beanies as we battled

the icy temperatures and ferocious winds of the appropriately named Wild Atlantic Way.

The miles passed by in a blur of beauty and I lost count of how many times I asked Derek to stop so I could take one more photo of a picturesque view, an ancient ruin or a cute flock of sheep (their colourful painted coats just make me smile).

Needless to say, we bypassed the windswept Trump Golf Course in favour of a Guinness pie by the fire in the pretty seaside town of Ballybunion, although we did brave the cold to make an unplanned stop at Ardfert to explore a ruined church that caught my eye as we drove past.

Our next destination was a very special one for Derek as we tracked down his father’s family home in Listowel.

It is still owned by the O’Connell clan, although unfortunately no one was there the day we called in.

We did, however, meet several locals who knew the name and were very happy to share their memories with a couple of far-flung Australian relatives. >>

After an overnight stay in a cute B&B and a terrifying ferry ride across the Shannon Estuary, we wound our way up to the iconic Cliffs of Moher.

In a stroke of Irish luck, the sun came out at the just right time and we spent an enjoyable few hours taking in the majesty and natural beauty of this very popular tourist attraction.

Then it was time to head to our last stop on this trip … Galway. I had done a bit of research and decided it would be nice to stay on the seafront at nearby Salthill.

With its pretty promenade, lapping waves and thriving restaurant scene it was definitely a lovely place to spend a couple of nights.

What I hadn’t factored in was that we would completely bypass the city centre itself, which meant we didn’t have a chance to see any of its well-documented sights and nightlife (I guess that means it is on the itinerary next time).

Instead, we spent our time relaxing and driving further along the coast to check out some of the places that Derek visited when he rode his bike through the region a few years ago.

Fond memories for him and new experiences for me.

A friend back home had also suggested we take a tour of Kylemore Abbey if we were in the area and I am very glad we took her advice.

Set against the wild beauty of Connemara in County Galway, this stunning lakeside home was built in the 1860s by politician and businessman Mitchell Henry for his beloved wife Margaret.

Tragically she died a sudden death when she was quite young and, in the decades that followed, the Benedictine nuns made Kylemore their home.

Wandering through the restored rooms of the Abbey and the accompanying Victorian Walled Garden was one of the highlights of our entire trip and a wonderful way to end this particular Irish adventure.

What do you enjoy about travelling?

Experiencing different countries and cultures, the world is an amazing place.

What has been your most memorable travel experience?

I think travelling to Slovenia for a tournament in 1991.

We had flown to Munich and planned to drive there but when we arrived at the rental car desk we were told we were not allowed to drive to Slovenia as it was still recovering from a Civil War.

We ended up taking a dodgy old rattler train through the night which was quite scary, at every stop there were police with machine guns checking the train.

We did make it but it is not an experience I would want over.

Is there a particular place on your travel ‘bucket list’?

Croatia, I have never been there and have heard so many amazing stories.

Window or aisle seat?

Aisle every time ... I am not a great sleeper on the plane and like to get up and stretch and move about during long haul flights.

What is your most essential travel item?

Eye mask, ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones.

How do you pass time while in transit?

Watching TV shows and just mindless binging after I am caught up on emails and work stuff.

Car, coach, plane or ship?

I have been on a couple of cruises which I really enjoyed so for a holiday it’s a ship. For work I don’t mind, just the quickest way possible.

What is your favourite iconic landmark?

Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge – when you have been overseas for many months there is no better sight to see when you come in to land in Sydney.

What do you always do before you go?

Stretch and hydrate.

Is there one piece of travel advice you can share?

Be prepared and do your homework about your destination.

What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have ever tasted?

There is not much I don’t eat, and its great travelling and experiencing food from other countries… I could never bring myself to eat frog legs though.

What is one destination that everyone should see in their lifetime?

My favourite cities are Barcelona, Rome and Prague, I would say everyone should try to see them at some point in their lives.

How has technology changed the way we travel today?

Enormously, when I first started travelling there were no mobile phones or internet so no Google maps.

Do you have a favourite hotel?

To me hotels symbolise work, so I don’t really have a favourite one.

On holiday I prefer to book an Airbnb as I have stayed in hotels pretty much my whole life.

Can you name your favourite Australian destination?

Yamba in Northern NSW is just magical. It has great beaches, fishing and it isn’t too commercialised, plus I love being close to the ocean as it’s my happy place.

Where have you just returned from and where to next?

My last five weeks were at the NSW Open at Wollongong, The Australian Womens Classic at Magenta Shores on the NSW Central Coast, the Womens Australian Open in Adelaide, the Australian Womens PGA Championship at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast, a 2-day event in Wagga Wagga and I am now in a small country town in NSW called Holbrook where we will have our last event for early 2026.

Supply SHORTFALL

The demand fuelling the Gold Coast’s surging rental rates.

AVERAGE RENTS have almost doubled for Gold Coast homes over the past five years in one of the biggest increases of any city or region nationally.

New research shows the surge has been driven by a supply shortfall that has failed to keep up with demand from a population growing at a faster pace than Sydney.

According to data from property research group PropTrack, the median advertised rent for houses on the Gold Coast has risen 72.2 per cent since 2021 after a 9.4 per cent increase in the 12 months to February this year.

The five-year growth rate is second only to the 94.7 per cent increase recorded by the outback north of Western Australia which is home to the resource-fuelled economies of the Pilbara and Kimberly regions.

The latest PropTrack data positions the Gold Coast as Australia’s 10th most expensive rental market for houses with a median advertised rent of $930 a week, and well above Brisbane in 15th spot with a median rent of $850.

The Gold Coast sits behind seven Sydney suburbs, including the country’s most expensive rental market, the NSW capital’s eastern suburbs,

where the mean advertised rent hit $1,595 –up 61.1 per cent over the past five years.

Analysis of the data by REA Group senior economist Eleanor Creagh provides key insights into the reasons for the rapid growth in rental rates on the Gold Coast, and why the situation is unlikely to ease any time soon.

“Rather than simply being a lifestyle rich coastal market experiencing a surge in rent prices, the Gold Coast is emerging as one of the most expensive and fastest growing rental markets in the country,” says Ms Creagh.

“Rapid population growth combined with housing supply that has struggled to keep pace helps to explain the low vacancy and the near doubling in house and unit rents seen in the past five years.”

Ms Creagh points out that the Gold Coast’s population has grown 11 per cent since before the pandemic, a rate which is four times faster than Sydney’s.

With a population that is likely to hit 730,000 residents by mid-2026, up from about 700,000 last year, the researcher says the city is now ‘comfortably the largest non-capital city urban region in Australia’.

“Population growth of that magnitude has had significant housing implications,” says Ms Creagh. Unfortunately, housing approvals have not kept pace, which underscores the growth in rental rates across the Gold Coast.

Analysis from PropTrack shows that the Gold Coast is suffering from a massive housing shortfall that has progressively become worse in the past few years.

The market shifted from a surplus of supply to a shortage in 2023 with the shortfall in housing blowing out further in 2024.

“The data suggest that since June 2019, the Gold Coast has underdelivered housing by around 3,400 dwellings relative to population growth to mid-2024, under the assumption of 2.5 people per dwelling,” says Ms Creagh.

If population growth is maintained, and should housing approvals continue their negative trend, Ms Creagh says the Gold Coast’s current shortfall will not only persist but ‘accelerate sharply through 2025 and 2026 to a cumulative shortfall of over 8,000 dwellings’.

The downturn in supply has been coming for some time despite what Ms Creagh describes as a ‘solid pace’ for construction of about seven dwellings per 1,000 residents each year on the Gold Coast.

“That hasn’t been enough to keep up with population growth,” she says.

“Further we saw a sharp drop off in building activity on the Gold Coast, from around nine homes per 1,000 residents in 2020 to closer to six by 2022.

“That downshift in supply came just as population growth surged, which is why we’re now seeing a large housing shortfall emerge.”

Critically, the Gold Coast market is burdened by its reliance on apartment projects to meet its housing goals, with the high-density sector accounting for about two-thirds of total approvals.

PropTrack points out that that while detached houses usually take a year from approval to completion, apartment projects typically require 2.5 years.

“At this point, a recovery in approvals won’t immediately resolve shortages because of construction lags, the market is likely to remain undersupplied for several years,” says Ms Creagh.

“This shortage explains the sustained upward pressure on rental prices and home prices, with Gold Coast house rentals now some of the most expensive in the country.”

Adding fuel to the rental growth fire is the Gold Coast own success story, or at least the city’s economic strength as part of the broader South-East Queensland region which has collectively seen its population swell by 300,000 over the past five years.

“Increasingly, the Gold Coast is functioning less like a tourism driven market and more like a major urban labour market integrated with South-East Queensland,” says Ms Creagh.

“Improvements in connectivity, interstate migration and a more diversified economic base have broadened the city’s appeal beyond its traditional role as a tourism or lifestyle destination.”

The diversification of the Gold Coast economy, long heralded by the City of Gold Coast as a key platform for future-proofing the city against the boom-bust property cycles of the past, has led to a surge in jobs across the health, education and professional services sectors.

“These structural changes help explain why the rental market has tightened so markedly,” says Ms Creagh.

“When large population inflows occur and housing supply cannot respond at the scale required, rents and prices tend to respond quickly.

“Supply is increasing, but it is not yet enough, fast enough, or always in the right form to fully offset strong population driven demand for housing.”
