Editor's LETTER

WHAT IS YOUR favourite winter pastime?

Do you like to take in a show? Grab a bit to eat? Enjoy a massage? Plan an island escape?

Luckily, we cover all of this … and more … in this special issue of the magazine.

Let’s start with our gorgeous cover which showcases Brisbane Fashion Festival.

Taking place in August, this designerfocused event is celebrating its 21-year legacy with an amazing program of on and off runway experiences.

You can read more in the Looking Good section, where you will also find a heartwarming story about the Social Mums Club; a look back at the LeGassick jewellery dynasty and a preview of the upcoming Glow at the Cove wellness promotion.

Our celebrity interview is with legendry actor – and debut director – John Travolta.

While I don’t really know what he does in his free time, it is pretty safe to assume that flying is in there somewhere, given he has 15 jet ratings and 10,000 flying hours.

I mentioned island escapes earlier and we have a couple of very appealing, but very different, options for you in the Travel pages.

Firstly, I write about my recent holiday to Norfolk Island, where we spent some downtime taking in the history, culture and beauty of this nearby destination.

In contrast, Cynthia flew to The Maldives, staying in luxury and indulging in the first-class amenities on offer.

Elsewhere in the magazine, Tony unveils the story behind Craggy Range wines, Marj taste-tests the humble sandwich and Australian country music superstar Tania Kernaghan tells why she loves exploring this big, beautiful land of ours.

We also checkout what’s happening at the Noosa Alive! Festival and bring you some very cute pics of the upcoming 2026 Gold Coast’s Next Top Dogel.

So hopefully we have inspired you to get out and about this winter, but if not, you can always stay at home in the warmth and read all about it instead.

“I wanted to say a huge thank you for a fabulous staycation … we had a wonderful time, some great memories were made,” Kerri said.

“The Emporium is such a cool hotel, and Yugi on Lady Elliott was the best guide. We managed to see one manta ray, plenty of turtles and a plethora of gorgeous fish. The flight up was a highlight and our driver, Michael, also deserves a mention. We feel extremely spoilt, and so grateful.”

John Travolta makes his directorial debut in Propeller One-Way Night Coach, a family adventure film based on a novel also written by the Hollywood star.

HOLLYWOOD LEGEND John Travolta stepped out at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival for the premiere of his directorial debut Propeller One-Way Night Coach.

Clad in a white beret, Travolta walked the Cannes red carpet with his 26-year-old daughter Ella Bleu Travolta.

The 72-year-old wrote, directed and co-produced the movie based on his own 1997 children’s novel.

Meanwhile, Thierry Frémaux, the festival’s artistic director, honoured a visibly moved Travolta with a surprise Palme d’Or just before the screening.

“You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t know it would mean this,” John said.

Following the premiere, the star sat down with his daughter to talk about bringing his debut directorial feature to Cannes and what the festival means to him.

He also spoke about the making of the film, working alongside his daughter and dedicating the movie to his late wife Kelly Preston.

How does it feel to be here in Cannes with your directorial debut? And to receive an honorary Palme d’Or?

I am so happy, I’m so elated.

You haven’t been here for around seven years, right?

Yeah, like eight, I think, or something like that, but what a fantastic visit.

Thierry [Frémaux] set this up, because he loves this movie and he really wanted the world to see it.

And he presented me the beautiful gift of the Palme d’Or so it’s been a gorgeous celebration for the last few days.

And the first time you were here was with Pulp Fiction?

For an actual movie, yes.

I was here other years for different reasons, but I think Pulp Fiction was the first.

About this film, it’s refreshing, because nowadays everything is about being cynical, ironic, otherwise you are not smart enough. And this is so sincere and sweet and apologetic?

Thank you. That’s what I always set out to do.

How did you come up with that approach?

Because a child’s hopefulness and resilience is unique.

And we’ve forgotten what that’s like.

I just looked for the next good thing that could happen, even if I heard interesting bad news, like when Liz [airline assistant character] talks about the concentration camp, or the passenger is scared because of the crash that he almost was in.

You’re looking at darkness and you feel bad for it but you’re resilient, you recover quickly.

And I really wanted it to be an example of what we could regain, to regain that childlike feeling.

But also, it was an era that was different.

It was a specific era of thinkingness [sic], do you know?

There were bad things happening in the world at that time but personal viewpoints were more positive to some degree.

We weren’t so inundated with looking at the dark side of life. >>

How did you keep that attitude as an adult?

That childlike optimism?

Well, I’ve certainly been tested.

But I can’t help it, my nature is to look at the positive.

So even the worst thing can happen, and I will try my best to crawl out of it and look at what could be better, what could handle that, what could solve it.

So I will look at darkness, but I don’t choose to die with it.

Your co-producer Jason Berger said that you were very calm, systematic.

Jason was a great partner in producing this because nothing was impossible.

They say it can’t be done. Let’s find a way it can be done …and we’d find a way it could be done.

Do you know, I said, ‘I’ve got to have that airport in New York, that terminal. It’s Saarinen’s masterpiece’.

‘I don’t know where we’re going to shoot if we can’t but I don’t think we’re going to be able to get it’.

I gave the assignment to him.

He calls, he says, ‘Guess what? We’ve got the run of the terminal. We can use any part of it’.

So we did. We turned one building into seven sets.

It was our studio. It was remarkable.

Everything in this movie reflects a master. Every piece of music was a masterpiece of the era.

That architecture – masterpiece, the clothing – masterpiece, everything was the definitive of that era.

Do you think that Kelly [Preston, late wife] was watching over this film?

She must be because I dedicated the movie to Kelly, to my son Jetty, and to all my brothers and sisters and my mother and father because they were the blueprint, this is why this film exists.

It’s an example of how I viewed life.

Speaking of family, how important is it to be here with your wonderful actress daughter?

Well, we are partners, Ella and I, and we see everything very similarly and we’re very simpatico with what we view, how we view things, the quality of what we’re looking at, we agree on.

So when we entered into this, we were partners.

We did it on the iPhone, we practised different shots.

She played all the characters so we could hand it to the cinematographer and Jason to go, ‘This is what I want. This is how I want the entrance. This is where I want the exit. This is how I want this framed’.

And Ella was quintessential in helping me – ‘Do you like this framing or do you like that framing? What do you think would work better? Maybe we don’t need a side shot. Maybe it’s just the front and the back. Yeah. Okay, good’.

So we spoke the same language, in shorthand.

This threesome here [Travolta, Jason Berger and Ella], we used shorthand to get what we needed.

There was no wasted time, no wasted efforts.

When did you discover that Ella was made for cinema?

When she was eight years old and we did a movie with Robin Williams called Old Dogs

Even as a little girl on cinema, she let the camera do all the work.

She never acted, she was just there and let the camera observe her.

She was breathtaking as a seven, eight-year-old.

And she grew up, and she was equally breathtaking.

So I designed this movie as though one would design the introduction of Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor or Grace Kelly.

I said, ‘I’ve got to do something special’.

So he’s mysteriously looking at this gold curtain and he wants to know desperately what that gold curtain is about.

He flags to a stewardess, and then you see Ella.

And I said, ‘Slow motion, ‘Girl from Ipanema’.’

I was watching, crying and I went, ‘Oh my God, this is perfect’. >>

Ella Blue Tavolta & John Travolta. Photo Getty Images

Ella, what is it like being directed by your father?

ELLA: Oh my gosh, it wasn’t very hard to create a good rapport together.

I mean, it wasn’t very hard to get along because he’s like my best friend.

But I think it was more of a collaborative experience because we were always together, so we would constantly be running ideas off of each other and running things by each other.

Like he said earlier, we flew out to the TWA terminal before even going to film.

And we ran through every scene that we were going to shoot there on the iPhone, and I stood in for all the characters.

So we sort of just knew exactly what was happening going into it.

And I also grew up with all of these stories my whole life, so I was very familiar with these characters and these moments.

So it was so incredible to be a part of that and see them actually coming to life.

It was so incredibly special.

John, how many hours of flying have you done?

Oh, 10,000 hours flying.

15 jet ratings, 747, 707, 737. Gulfstream, Global, Hawker, Citation, Learjet.

Three different fighter-type jets.

Yeah, I’m pretty committed to that.

I go to school three, four times a year for training to keep sharp.

What does flying give you as a person?

It gives me objectivity, I can be not in my head, I can be outward looking, which directing does too.

I don’t have to worry about playing a character and figuring out behaviour and all that stuff.

I’m watching someone else do it, and I can correct and do it, so it’s outward attention, it’s not inward attention.

So how is your dad as a pilot?

ELLA: He’s amazing. I feel the safest when he’s flying, definitely.

And I would always go up to the cockpit when I was young, and he would let me steer a little bit and press different buttons and do different things, he’s the best pilot.

JOHN : I’ve had a lot of training in simulators, that’s where they do the emergencies.

I’m probably over-trained in that, so if an emergency ever does come up, I’m very calm because I’ve seen it for 40 years, 45 years in the simulators.

Because I’m a celebrity, insurance companies, they get a little more sensitive to you knowing what you’re doing, so they kind of throw the book at you, and that’s fine. I’d rather know more than less.

You’re talking about your passion for planes, for directing. What’s the place in your life now for your acting side?

Well, there’s a movie coming out in November, which is pretty controversial.

It’s called November 1963

I play Johnny Roselli, who supposedly, according to the mob, is the one who shot President Kennedy.

It’s an underbelly of the Giacana family and, apparently, this really was the truth of what happened.

So it wasn’t a happy film to film, but it’s a very fascinating and kind of compelling story.

I saw it. It’s really effective, and if this is really true, which by documents it seems like it is, I think it’ll be another level.

It’ll be different than JFK, which was speculative, that movie.

Roland Joffé directed it [November 1963 ], and he’s an excellent director.

So that’s the next film that’ll be out.

Ella and I did another film called Black Tides, with Renny Harlin, who is very good at action movies.

That should be an interesting movie – he thinks it turned out wonderfully – so that’s out this Fall, I think.

Any more directing for you?

Only if it was something I felt compelled with the subject matter.

Generations OF LUXURY

What began as a passion for fine jewellery has grown into one of the Gold Coast’s most respected family-owned businesses, built on a simple philosophy: quality, integrity and relationships matter.

FOR MORE THAN THREE DECADES, the LeGassick family has been helping the Gold Coast community celebrate life’s most meaningful moments through exceptional jewellery, craftsmanship and personal service.

In an age where many luxury retailers have become part of large corporate groups in an everevolving industry, LeGassick remains proudly family-owned and operated, upholding the values that helped establish the business.

Since 1992, LeGassick has become woven into the fabric of the Gold Coast community.

Engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary gifts, milestone birthdays and family heirlooms have all passed through the hands of the LeGassick team, with every customer who walks through the doors treated not as a transaction but as part of a story.

For many local families, the relationship spans generations, with parents, children, and now grandchildren returning to mark life’s most significant occasions.

The Gold Coast region itself has also changed dramatically during the past 30 years.

Once known primarily as a holiday destination, it has matured into one of Australia’s most desirable places to live, work and raise a family.

A community with an appreciation for luxury, craftsmanship and quality that reflects the sophistication of the region today.

Throughout this transformation, LeGassick has remained committed to sourcing some of the world’s finest diamonds, gemstones and luxury jewellery brands while maintaining the personalised service that only an independent family business can provide.

While jewellery often captures attention through its sparkle and beauty, the true artistry is found in the skilled hands of the master jewellers and designers who bring each piece to life.

The craftsmanship and attention to detail that takes place behind the scenes is what underpins every beautiful piece of jewellery at LeGassick.

Within the LeGassick workshop, traditional techniques meet modern technology to create, restore and maintain treasured pieces that will be worn for generations.

Bespoke jewellery designs begin as quiet conversations, gaining inspiration from a vision, a sketch, a family diamond or simply an idea.

Through collaboration with experienced designers, that idea evolves into a one-of-a-kind piece crafted specifically for its owner.

Jewellery restoration has become one of the most meaningful aspects of the business, with the workshops playing a key role in preserving family history.

Vintage rings, heirloom brooches and treasured family pieces are carefully cleaned, maintained and restored, allowing them to continue their journey through future generations.

These projects often carry significant sentimental value, connecting families to memories, milestones and loved ones.

The workshop also serves as a place where new stories begin, as valued clients celebrate the moments in life that matter.

Custom jewellery design has become an increasingly important part of the LeGassick experience, allowing clients to create pieces that are deeply personal and completely unique.

For every celebration, memory and occasion, the skilled jewellers and designers are able to bring each special piece to life, with meticulous attention to detail and enduring commitment to exceptional quality.

This combination of creativity and expertise is what continues to set LeGassick apart.

Instead, true luxury is found in the experience, the craftsmanship and the emotions attached to a piece of jewellery.

While jewellery trends may change over time, the value of skilled artisanship remains constant.

Every piece that leaves the workshop reflects decades of experience and a genuine passion for creating jewellery that will be treasured for generations.

For the LeGassick family, luxury has never been solely about diamonds or precious metals.

An engagement ring to represent a promise of love. A diamond pendant to commemorate a milestone graduation. An emerald ring to celebrate a 20th anniversary. A restored heirloom to reconnect a family with its history.

These are the moments that give jewellery its meaning.

Today, as the next generation helps shape the future of the business, the LeGassick commitment to excellence remains stronger than ever.

New concepts, evolving designs, and emerging technologies continue to influence the collection ... however, LeGassick's foundation remains unchanged: exceptional quality, expert craftsmanship and genuine relationships.

In many ways, the story of LeGassick mirrors the story of the Gold Coast itself.

Both have grown, evolved, and matured while maintaining a strong sense of identity.

Both continue to embrace the future while respecting the traditions that shaped them.

More than three decades after welcoming their first customers, the LeGassick family remains passionate about helping people celebrate life’s most important moments.

Each occasion represents an opportunity to become a part of someone's story.

And that, perhaps, is the most enduring luxury of all.

Finding YOUR VILLAGE

How local mums are building meaningful connections.

MOST MOTHERS WANT the same thing: to be wonderful mums while also living happy, connected and fulfilling lives of their own – whether they're raising toddlers, navigating the teenage years or supporting adult children.

Yet between work, school drop-offs, family responsibilities and the endless demands of modern life, friendship often quietly slips down the priority list.

Days become weeks, weeks become months, and before long many women realise they haven't made a new friend in years.

The fundamental need for human connection remains strong.

Yet for many women, finding new friendships as an adult can feel surprisingly difficult.

From the northern Gold Coast and beyond, down to the southern suburbs, a group of local women is helping to change that.

Through a growing network of Social Mums Club communities, local club leaders are creating welcoming spaces where connection, friendship and belonging can flourish.

In less than a year, more than 3,000 local mums have connected through the communities, with well over 100 events and meet-ups already held,

alongside hundreds of thousands of interactions with local mums through Social Mums Club's community channels.

The movement began in 2020 when Social Mums Club Founder Kirsty Foster moved from New Zealand to Brisbane.

"Even though I had family nearby, I didn't have any local friends," Kirsty says.

"I wanted that village around me – people who understood motherhood, friendship and connection.

“Then COVID arrived and suddenly it became even harder to meet people."

What started as Kirsty's own search for friendship quickly revealed a much bigger need.

Denise Kennerley, owner of Social Mums Club Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach and Miami, says the community transformed her life too.

"I realised I'd become a creature of habit,” she explains.

“Social Mums Club gave me a new lease on life, helping me step outside my comfort zone, build meaningful friendships and connect with inspiring women.

“That's what drives me to help other mums find that same sense of belonging."

Today, Social Mums Club has helped more than 47,000 mums around Australia connect with friendship, support and community.

Across the Gold Coast region, the growth has been remarkable, bringing together mums of all ages and stages – from women with young children through to mums of teenagers, adult children and even grandchildren.

While the challenges of motherhood change, the need for friendship remains constant.

At a time when human connection is increasingly being recognised as an important contributor to health and wellbeing, creating opportunities for meaningful relationships has never been more important.

From dinners and walks to book clubs, brunches, trivia nights, pickleball and over-50's lunches, the events are designed to cater for a wide range of interests.

More than 95 per cent of events are free to attend and membership is completely free.

But according to Kirsty, the activities themselves are only part of the story.

"The hardest part isn't finding an event," she says.

"The hardest part is actually turning up."

Social Mums Club has developed its own approach to helping women feel comfortable attending events, recognising that for many mums the biggest hurdle isn't finding something of interest – it's having the confidence to walk through the door.

Every event is intentionally designed to help women feel welcome, included and part of the community from the moment they arrive.

For Denise, encouraging women take that first step is one of the most rewarding parts of leading a community.

"It is such a welcoming and caring environment," she says.

"No one should feel nervous about coming along.

“Our mission is to make every woman feel like part of a new family."

Over the years, hosts have heard countless stories from women who almost didn't attend their first event, only to discover friendships and support networks that transformed their lives.

Some members have described the community as life-changing, and in more than one instance, women have told hosts that Social Mums Club changed – or even saved – their life.

One story that recently stood out to Kirsty was attending the 50th birthday celebration of a woman who joined Social Mums Club shortly after it launched.

"The number of people there from Social Mums Club was incredible," she recalls.

"She spoke about the friendships she had built through Social Mums Club, how she'd rediscovered her love of running and developed an incredible support network through people she met in the community.

“It was a beautiful reminder of what's possible when people find their village."

For many women, particularly those navigating the challenges of raising children, caring for ageing parents, career pressures, relationship changes or simply the realities of midlife, having a trusted local support network can make an enormous difference.

And the impact extends beyond the mums who attend.

Social Mums Club also works alongside local businesses that genuinely care about supporting women and families.

From free workshops and information evenings to community initiatives and helpful local resources, partnerships with local businesses create even more opportunities for mums to connect, learn and thrive.

In doing so, they help strengthen both the social and economic fabric of the region.

Local businesses interested in supporting mums through community partnerships can find out more on the club website –socialmumsclub.com/for-business-owners.

At its heart, Social Mums Club exists to improve the lives of mums by creating human connection through social community.

And while the organisation has grown significantly since its beginnings, the mission remains remarkably simple: helping women find their people.

Because every stage of motherhood is easier when you have a village around you.

And sometimes, finding your people begins with a single conversation, a coffee catch-up, or simply having the courage to walk through the door.

Grab A BITE

The humble sandwich has had an upgrade … with many eateries now offering deluxe versions of this menu staple.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE
Tarte Bakery

THE SANDWICH HAS always had a place in world cuisine.

For centuries, people in ancient cultures, from Asia and Africa to Europe, had scooped fillings onto flatbreads of various types.

However, it was not until the 18th century, when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, requested that his meat be served between two slices of bread, that the long-held practice got its name.

Valued for its compact portability and ease of consumption, the concept of eating a ‘sandwich’ spread across the world, adapting to culinary traditions.

In Australia, even within a generation, the sandwich has evolved.

Still convenient, portable, and easy to eat, it has transitioned from being just a working man’s lunch to a gourmet food item.

A few decades ago, it was common to buy a salad sandwich at the deli bar of your corner store, where stainless steel containers of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and beetroot sat poised to supply the next order.

Tinned beetroot was a given, its vinegary zing of flavour adding a bite of acidity to the completed sandwich.

Though economic constraints and pressures from consumers to have fancier food led to the demise of the sandwich bar in the 1980s, the sandwich did not disappear for long.

As a dish, there’s a lot to love about a sandwich.

It’s a nutritious meal, with the potential of utilising items from all the food groups.

However, a sandwich is only as good as its ingredients, their flavours and textures, freshness and quality, and the balance between them.

Yet, within those parameters, the sandwich can take on its own identity, depending on its cultural derivation.

Fortunately for us, the sandwich has recently enjoyed a multinational rebirth, the roots of its heritage encompassing Italy, France, the US and Japan, often with an all-Australian twist.

From meatball subs to Philly cheese steak rolls, from loaded Reubens to katsu pork encased in pillowy white milk bread, we have access to a wide range of sandwiches.

Ditch your soggy lunchbox memories and join us on a journey of some of our best worldinspired sandwiches.

American deli culture has had a big influence on the revival of the Australian sandwich.

The first source was New York delis owned by Jewish immigrants, whose sandwiches introduced us to classics such as beef pastrami on rye, corned beef, and a bagel with lox (smoked salmon).

The second Amercian influence came from Italian corner stores and sandwich shops.

The ‘hero’ sandwich (or ‘sub’) featuring meats, cheeses and vegetables on a long roll was developed in the late 1800s by Italian immigrants in New York, Philadelphia and New Orleans.

Classic Italian sandwiches featured traditonal combinations such as salami with provolone and roasted peppers, prosciutto with fresh mozzarella and basil, and mortadella with sopressata and marinated vegetables.

Just as menus across the US absorbed elements of their cultural milieu, ‘delis’ around the south-east corner of Queensland and the Northern Rivers of New South Wales each have their own interpretation of the term ‘delicatessen’ as well as their own version of the ‘sandwich’.

Joe’s Deli in Pacific Fair Broadbeach fuses American and Italian influences together in one menu.

Many classic sandwiches from across America are represented, some with a twist.

From the Famous Meatball Sub to a Lobster Roll, a delicious selection of sandwiches, subs and piadinas take pride of place.

John Draper, owner of Junior’s Deli in Mudgeeraba draws his inspiration from ‘New York deli meets the quintessential Aussie pub’. From Japanese ingredients to American melts and cold cuts, each dish is a melting pot of flavours.

The deli is famous for its New York-style Philly cheese and steak sandwich, and for John’s hands-on approach.

Taking Aussie multiculturalism in his stride, John makes his own pickled eggs, cucumber pickles and sauces, brining and cooking his chicken and meat himself.

Sandwiches from Janus Deli in Molendinar fuse elements from several countries.

Their Moo-licious is a classic Reuben, while another of their signatures, the Janus Delight, features Italian meats, mortadella, leg ham, salami and provolone cheese playfully mixed with kiwi yoghurt dressing sandwiched between slabs of Turkish bread.

The menu at the tiny but atmospheric Palomino’s Deli in Tugun hinges on three sub sandwiches: the Egg Roll at breakfast time, followed by the Italian or American sandwiches filled with your choice of meat, plus cheese, pickles and dressing.

Nico. Deli & Shop at Kirra is also a tribute to the Italian sandwich.

With six delicious panini options on their menu, from mortadella to salumi, the main Italian cold cuts are covered, with one vegetarian option, the Caprese. >>

Junior's Deli Side Piece Coffee

Luna’s Deli in Coolangatta honours the owners’ French and Argentinian-Italian roots.

From the comforting Croque Monsieur filled with layers of Bangalow ham, gruyère, Dijon and velvety béchamel to handmade focaccia sandwiches, menu items are filled with the best ingredients, local where possible or imported.

George’s Deli in Kingscliff fuses Filipino flavours from the owners’ heritage with classic American deli traditions.

Their menu reflects this fusion of cultures, from their homemade pastrami Reubens to ubefilled doughnuts.

Their focaccia, toasties and burgers are all packed with fresh, local ingredients.

Mama G’s Deli, which the Gambaro Group opened in Coolangatta in June, is intent on ‘doing the simple things properly’.

Its sandwiches are filled with cured meats and fresh produce from the local area.

When Aperitivo opened in Currumbin Valley in 2021, the Gold Coast was introduced to real Italian sandwiches, owner Matteo Secci baking sourdough panini, focaccia and pinsa daily.

Though the Seccis were to sell Aperitivo two years later, diners had come to appreciate and seek out the artistry of a great Italian sandwich.

For some of the best Italian sandwiches, visit Piada Co in Burleigh Heads.

Their combination of prime Italian fillings folded in freshly made-in-house piadina (Italian flatbread) is unbeatable.

Think Birria Pulled Ragu, a sandwich of slowcooked beef, provolone and pecorino cheese with caramelised onion dipped in a tasty birria consommé and you get the picture.

The birria can even be ordered gluten-free. There are also two dozen extra ingredients that can be added to your sandwich.

If you want a ‘round-the-world’ experience under one roof, the crew at Breadwinner Sandwiches in Kingscliff is waiting for you.

Their most popular sandwiches are the Caesar Sanga (Italian-Mexican), Banh Mi (French-Vietnamese), Meatball with vodka sauce and pecorino (Italian-American) and Salumi Focaccia (Italian).

Kennedy’s in Tweed Heads also takes an eclectic approach to sandwiches, bringing us toasties, signature sourdoughs (house-made pinsini flatbreads wrapped around Italian fillings), as well as moreish hawkers (filling served on a hawker roti).

Our only complication at Kennedy’s is deciding on which ‘sandwich’ to order.

Tarte Bakery and Tarte Beach House both give us a twist on French bistro classics, including toasties, sourdough sandwiches and subs.

While the Five-cheese truffle toastie speaks French, both the Korean Philly Cheese Steak and the Miso Chicken Sandwich have travelled a long way from their origins, taking an Asian holiday on the way.

Japanese sandos made a late entry into Australian culture.

Conceived in the 1930s to allow geishas to snack without disturbing their makeup, the sando became a popular food in Japanese convenience stores.

Katsu, a panko-crumbed pork cutlet sandwiched between two crustless pieces of pillowy soft shokupan or milk bread, is an adaptation of the French côtelette.

Japanese investors who visited the Gold Coast in the 1980s and 1990s founded restaurants, introducing us to their food.

Sushi became our first widely accepted Japanese food item, the sando following in its wake.

Using fresh, high-quality ingredients is a foundational principle of Japanese cuisine.

This philosophy extends to the Japanese sandwich, where the freshness of the bread, vegetables, and proteins is paramount.

Sandos are always made to order from fresh ingredients sourced daily.

From a traditional Tamago (boiled egg) sando to a rich filling of Wagyu Beef, Goya in Broadbeach offers a different range of sandos.

Or try Chanoyu in Nerang, where a Pork Katsu or Chicken sando is on offer.

You’ll also find many varieties of sando at Bobby Bang’s in Nobby Beach from Wagyu or Panko-crumbed prawns, to their delicious Shokupan French toast topped with whipped cream, strawberries and hojicha caramel.

Harajuku Gyoza offers sandos as a special promotion, including a fried fruit sandwich, its soft textures of cream and strawberries contrasting to the crispy fried bread.

While Cycho’s Buffalo Wings’ chicken sando is less traditional with its crusts intact, local students may choose to eat one of their hearty sandwiches to bring good luck before exams (as the Japanese believe).

Another take on the traditional sandwich, toasties are the quintessential comfort food.

They have evolved from the ubiquitous ‘ham, cheese and tomato’ toasted sandwich available at road stops to dripping multi-cheese fillings sandwiched between tasty doorstops of sourdough.

Some of our best toasties are available at MC’s Sandwich House in Burleigh, Janus Deli in Molendinar, Sidepiece Coffee in Varsity, and Milk Money Espresso in Robina, where your sandwich has its own dipping sauce.

You can still find a traditional salad sandwich at Mermaid Hot Bread , or less traditional versions on the wide-ranging menu at Delightful in Tweed Heads, among the loaded options at Breadwinner Sandwiches in Kingscliff and at Piknik in Burleigh (known for its plant-based offerings); however, it will be a more luxe experience than the ‘grab and go’ sandwiches some of us remember.

From truffles to French cheeses, and sauerkraut to Green Goddess dressing one message is clear: sandwiches aren’t what they used to be.

RESPECTED HOSPITALITY operators Max and Amanda Alfieri are set to make a highly anticipated return to Sanctuary Cove, announcing the upcoming opening of Zio Italian Enoteca.

After a five-year hiatus from the precinct, the former owners of popular Italian restaurant Ioesco will bring their signature passion for Italian food, wine and hospitality back to the heart of the Marine Village, creating a welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike.

Located in Building Four on Masthead Way, along the village’s picturesque main thoroughfare, Zio Italian Enoteca will offer seating for approximately 70 guests, with both indoor and outdoor dining available.

“We are incredibly excited to return to Sanctuary Cove and to be part of Mulpha’s vision for the future of the Village,” said Amanda and Max.

“We look forward to contributing to the vibrant dining and lifestyle experience that makes Sanctuary Cove such a unique destination.”

Zio Italian Enoteca will offer a carefully curated selection of local and international wines, paired with traditional Italian antipasto-style offerings including freshly sliced cured meats, artisan cheeses, crusty breads and seasonal accompaniments.

As the venue settles into spring, the menu will expand to feature a broader range of authentic Italian specialty dishes inspired by the couple’s extensive travels.

“Sanctuary Cove has always been home to us,” said Max

“Zio Italian Enoteca gives us the opportunity to share the flavours, traditions and discoveries we have experienced across Italy.

“From regional wines to time-honoured food traditions, we hope to bring a little piece of Italy to the Cove.”

Scheduled to open in late winter/early spring, the new venue aims to create an authentic and relaxed European-style experience, celebrating the connection between food, wine and community.

“We are particularly excited to reconnect with our local community while also welcoming visitors from around Australia and overseas who come to experience everything Sanctuary Cove has to offer," said Max.

“We are also looking forward to inviting our guests into a space that reflects our love of Italy, its people, wines and traditions.

Lasting LEGACY

Meet the driving force behind New Zealand’s Craggy Range wines.
WORDS TONY HARPER

FROM WHERE I SIT it seems like moments ago, but the truth is that 27 years have passed since I answered a phone call from a close friend that proved seminal.

It didn’t really seem so at the time: she had been speaking to someone, a friend, who wished to learn the machinations of the wine game; growing, making, selling and tasting, with the end-dream of starting a winery. Hmmm.

It was a paying gig, so I accepted, but – at least for a wee while – I wasn’t expecting a great result.

How wrong I was.

On January 5th 2003, Craggy Range held its grand opening at its stunning Giants Winery in Hawkes Bay, and the very few doubts I still harboured (most had been well and truly vanquished) evaporated completely.

Not because of the grandiosity of the event (and it was very grand: Dame Kirk Te Kanawa, Tim Finn, Sir Edmund Hillary), but because of the tasting that was held for the wine press earlier to show off the new Craggy Range wines, in particular the inaugural release of the Icon range.

It completely enthralled the audience for the sheer grandeur of the top wines and the audacity to attempt such boldness, intensity and style from vines that were barely out of pre-school.

It was a hard and immediate lesson to me as to what can be achieved with the resources, vision and an unshakeable commitment to doing things as best they can be; not according to the book, but according to the drive to have it done.

And that, in a nutshell, is the Craggy Range philosophy.

To rewind, the young lady I was lucky enough to have helped learn the industry for a while was Mary-Jeanne Peabody – a fiercely devoted mother and wife, a kind and generous friend, and a sharp intellect that could, had she wished, have done little more than enjoy her family, her leisure and a fabulous social life.

This sounds a little crass, but it’s pertinent to the tale: the Peabody family was and is incredibly successful, and when its collective decided to create a winery, wine brand, one (or more) vineyard/s and all the trimmings, that’s exactly what happened.

“My father (Terry Peabody) tells a lovely story of returning to Brisbane from an extended overseas work trip,” Mary-Jeanne explains.

“Mum and I had prepared him a nice meal (I remember crab mornay in the mix) with some lovely wines.

“He says he woke the next morning with jet lag, a hangover and knowing he had made a promise to Mum and I that he couldn’t break.

“Over dinner we had told Dad we wanted a business that we could be involved in (Dad’s consisted of recycling, waste management, and trucks: great businesses but not very female friendly in the early 1990's).

“I pictured a hobby farm in the Yarra Valley or similar, but, once Dad got his head around the idea, a hobby farm was never an option.”

Which is why Craggy Range wines began – and continues to be such an incredible force –and why Mary-Jeanne never managed to potter around that hobby farm.

For the past two decades I have watched the fledgling winery become a one of New Zealand’s most lauded producers, and a definite player on the world stage (in such a short, short time).

And the tutor has become the tutored.

Mary-Jeanne talks of the search for a vineyard site, eventually settling on Hawkes Bay, and a patch of land on an old river bed that has become one of the most important places in New Zealand for wine production: the Gimblett Gravels.

“Mum and Dad started a global search for an established winery,” she says.

“It took them to beautiful parts of the world including Bordeaux, Burgundy and The Napa, but it didn't take them too long to realise that either they would never see a return on investment as prices were crazy, or they would be inheriting someone else's problems.

“We realised we wanted to start from scratch and do it properly, planting our own vineyards and developing our own winery.

“In 1994, Dad went to New Zealand for a truck show (at the time he had Western Star trucks).

“His New Zealand truck distributor also owned Montana Wines and took Dad to Kumeu River Winery on the edge of Auckland.

“Wines of such quality so close to the major city really resonated so he came home and said we are going to look around NZ.”

Part of the puzzle was, of course, engaging the right people, and they found that in Master of Wine, all round wonderful human being, and incredibly gifted viticulturist and winemaker, Steve Smith.

Steve, I believe, was pivotal to the early success of Craggy Range, and while he is no longer with the company, I doubt his influence will ever be forgotten.

“We met Steve in NZ in 1995 and travelled to different areas,” Mary-Jeanne recalls.

“We drove to the top of Te Mata Peak and looked down on a bare piece of land and knew we had found the home of our yet to be named winery.

“Such a beautiful site that sits at the end of a mountain range – Craggy Range.

“In 1997 an area (now an appellation based on soil type) known as The Gimblett Gravels became available and we tendered on a bare parcel of land that had previously been owned by a cement company who wanted to mine it for the gravel.

“The belief was that these incredibly stony soils would act something like an electric blanket for the grapes, heating up in the day and retaining heat at night, giving the ability to grow warmer climate grape varieties, specifically the Bordeaux varieties and Syrah.”

I remember telling Mary-Jeanne they were mad; that those grapes would never ripen in New Zealand.

I was very, very wrong.

While the Gimblett Gravels vineyards are important to Craggy Range, and form the core of the Hawkes Bay wines, the family has established a very important vineyard in Martinborough for the production of (mostly) Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The wines from this vineyard are extraordinary, and the Aroha Pinot Noir a testament to the claim that Martinborough sits comfortably amid the world’s best Pinot Noir vineyards.

But the Craggy Range story has only just begun, and these few words only scratch at the surface of what has already been achieved.

Mary-Jeanne’s plan of a Yarra hobby farm kind of morphed into something much bigger, much grander, much more important.

And foundations have been laid for many generations of the Peabody family.

“Some years ago my parents put Craggy into a 1,000 year legally binding trust,” Mary-Jeanne says.

“I think it's one of the most amazing things they have done.

“For my family it means we are here forever and are fully committed to Craggy Range.”

A love of adventure

Pretty as a picture Norfolk

Island offers visitors a warm welcome and a relaxed vibe.

WITH SO MUCH UNREST and uncertainly around the world many travellers are looking for destinations closer to home … and I recently discovered a real gem.

Located just off the Australian mainland, Norfolk Island is the perfect blend of proximity, history and natural beauty. >>

Our relaxing weeklong escape started with a short midmorning flight from Brisbane (no passports required but be aware that departure is from the International Terminal) which saw us disembarking a couple of hours later to blue skies and balmy weather.

Our first introduction to the laidback Norfolk lifestyle came when – instead of herding us into queues – the custom officials wandered through the arrrivals hall, greeting visitors, chatting with returning locals and checking our disclosure cards.

The chilled vibes continued as we made our way outside to be greeted by our host Phil and the little red Daihatsu Rocky that was included as part of the accommodation deal.

He quickly explained the basics of the road rules … 40kph inside the cattle grids (more about this later); 50kph everywhere else except the school which maintained a 30kph limit all day long … then we followed him at a very sedate pace to our new home base at The Ridge.

We were travelling with a good friend so the two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage, complete with a sun-drenched balcony overlooking the stunning views, suited us perfectly.

There was also a fully-equipped kitchen, which meant we were able to self-cater some of our meals.

Purchasing provisions can be quite expensive (understandable given the island’s remote location), so we chose to eat out most evenings.

From the local cafes to the clubs and restaurants, the food on offer was fresh, tasty and affordable.

I had prebooked an orientation tour for our first morning and it was certainly money well spent.

Not only did we learn a lot about the history of Norfolk, we also got an insight into the general layout of the island and the areas we wanted to re-explore. >>

Norfolk Island Cemetery
Captain Cook Lookout

The historic area of Kingston was our first port of call.

From the Military Barracks to Govenment House, the perfectly preserved sandstone buildings and cemetery site serve as a poignant reminder that Norfolk started its life as a penal colony.

But there are no crowds ruining your photos, no hordes of school children rushing around … just wander at your own pace, have a chat to your fellow toursts, pick the brain of a knowledgeable local … and if all else fails just give yourself over to the sounds and sights of the sea.

Another aspect we loved about the island was how close you are to everything.

If you miss something, it is easy to jump back in the car and retrace your steps. … every road leads to the edge of the island so you literally can’t get lost for too long.

And the entire place is just so pretty … head along any of the winding tracks and you are sure to discover another picturesque bay, lush green valley or crashing view of the ocean.

I mentioned the cattle grids earlier … and there is a very good reason for this.

Whether they are grazing by the side of the road or blocking your passage as you drive by, cows have absolute right of way.

Therefore you will find the grids at all the entrances to the main village to ensure people and cars can go about their business without being held up.

At any given time there are 230 beasts roaming freely around the island … but they are well outnumbered by the free-range chickens that also call Norfolk home.

It makes for a very bucolic scene whichever way you look.

So how did we fill our days … quite easily as out turned out.

Mornings were a relaxed affair … brekky and a cup of tea in the cottage before heading into town for a more bracing beverage.

Then it was on to another lap of Kingston … or a drive around the picturesque coastline (Emily Bay was a favourite) … or a wander through the 100 Acres Reserve.

One particularly active day saw us complete a leisurely nine holes at the local golf course. With its windswept fairways and scenic ocean outlook, this was honestly one of the nicest settings you could hope for when you are a hacker like me.

The showers often rolled in after lunch so we would head back to home to read a few chapters, enjoy a friendly game of cards or just wait for the rainbows to appear so we

could take yet another shot of our particular pot of gold.

The renowned Fish Fry was something else I had booked before we left … and again it proved to be a wise move.

From the delicious fresh seafood to the cracking entertainment and stunning clifftop setting, this was great night out.

For anyone interested in art, culture and history, the Cyclorama exhibition was another must-see.

Housed in a specially built building, the spectacular circular mural depicts the island’s past … from the departure of the earliest expeditions through to the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders who still have a proud heritage on the island today.

What was our favourite part of Norfolk?

Our travelling companion would probably say the magnificent Moreton Bay fig trees that line the road near the 100 Acres Reserve, Derek really enjoyed The Bounty Story experience at the local theatre and I could not go past the breathtaking scenery at Captain Cook Monument and Lookout … but realistically everywhere you looked were picture postcard views, welcoming faces and that relaxed vibe that you want from an island holiday.

With pristine white sand, crystal-clear seas and a bespoke collection of luxury villas, SO/Maldives is the perfect place to hit the re-set button.

BOARDING OUR NEW A330Neo en route to the extraordinary SO/Maldives, the friendly smiles of the Malaysian Airlines crew brought my stressed mood back to calm, and I settled into my private cabin-like flat-seat bed, longing to arrive at my destination and just chill.

But first satay... served ceremoniously with drinks before each meal in the business class cabin, the flavours prepare you for the delicious Asian-inspired dishes on offer.

Settling in with a comedy, a blanket and a snooze was the perfect preparation for a much-needed head-space break in the Maldives.

Landing at the brand new, locally art-inspired Velana International airport in Male –after a 50-minute stopover in Kuala Lumpur – the relief continued with no crowds, super-fast immigration (prefilled using an easy online form) and luggage promptly out and on the trolley.

Then it was on to our modern launch, heading for a quick 20-minute boat ride to nearby SO/Maldives. >>

WORDS CYNTHIA DAMMERER

We arrived in the darkness, but the lights on the soft blue waters illuminated fish, small black-tipped reef sharks and crystal-clear views to the white sand.

Delivered to the door in a buggy by my butler, the first impressions of the room were pure rockstar.

A colourful coral reef made from edible sweetness, champagne chilling in the ice bucket and an outdoor private garden pool, surrounded by immaculately raked sand, that led me on a 30 step walk along a short treelined path straight to the sandy lagoon.

Inside the very spacious villa, the bath was an enormous circle of anticipated pleasure, with a view of the pool and lagoon and a huge fabric embroidered umbrella suspended above.

After sinking into late night slumber with the relaxing sound of heavy rain on the roof, I awoke to muted sunshine but deliciously warm, humid air as I stumbled down the sand and into the welcoming sea water.

Sitting there for over half an hour, just floating and letting myself be gently moved back and forth with the pull of the water,

I imagined the daily life of seaweed or marine creatures feeling this rhythmic and calming motion … if only.

Snapping out of it – and into a smart coverall – I headed to art class.

I do not have an artistic bone in my body, so the teacher had his work cut out, but the result was astounding to me.

When guided, the perspectives and framing of the sea, clouds, palm tree and beach produced a surprisingly positive result, which now sits proudly on my bar as a daily reminder to relax, SO/style.

The range of cuisines offered on this tiny island are huge, from eggs benedict (my way) to Maldivian curries and delicate seafood dishes at Citronelle Restaurant or Lazuli Beach Club, where you can dine inside or in the warm sea air right on the sand.

Walk the runway to an array of Middle Eastern inspired delights served at Hadaba, with a side of stunning evening lagoon and sea views.

If you want to ease into your evening, you can enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail at the bar extending right over the water.

Aiming to deliver a more personal dining experience, the staff are cultivating an evergrowing garden to supply fresh produce.

While still in its infancy, their careful nurturing is already producing a ready supply of instant greens and herbs.

It would be wrong to miss taking a cooking class here at SO/Maldives.

The enthusiastic chef pre-prepares everything, setting it out on tables on the edge of the sand, overlooking the sparkling blue lagoon.

The basket of six different chillies immediately captures my attention and envious passers-by are drawn by the smell of fragrant garlic, ginger and spices as we prepare our traditional Maldivian curry base, to which we excitedly add a huge, whole, locally caught lobster.

Then we settle into the calming prep of Mashuni, a traditional Maldivian tuna and freshly grated coconut salad, hand mixed, and served with chapati.

We were encouraged to present it in our own style, and then sat and feasted on both dishes, in what was one of the most delicious and balanced meals I’ve tasted. >>

A sunset cruise followed, zipping about with spinner dolphins performing twilight acrobatics.

A glass of champagne in hand, watching the sun sink ceremoniously behind the neighbouring islands concluded a busy but remarkably relaxing existence on this tiny dot of sand caressed by the warm Indian ocean.

The next day followed a similar theme.

Sleep in, stroll to breakfast, seaweed float, then a visit to the cool kid’s club to invoke childhood memories with a tie-dye class.

A strong, emotional feeling of love surprisingly washed over me when choosing a tiny t-shirt intended for my new grandson, that I would create for him by selecting coloured dyes and applying them randomly to the shirt.

One day soon he will grow into it and I can tell him the story behind it.

Embracing the ‘me-time’ feel of the place, I also made time in my ‘busy’ schedule to enjoy a treatment in the serene wellness camp, which features a bespoke spa with hamman, steam room and sauna and state-of-the-art gym.

I stayed in a private pool beach villa, on the sand, with easy access to the sea.

Friends booked their accommodation in overwater villas with direct access, via a grand staircase, to the sea and a private pool, with sublime sunset vistas, and a daily dose of sea air and views of rays, small sharks, fish and the occasional floating fellow guest.

Everything in this idyllic location always seemed so muted.

The soft waves lapping, the gentle cool-vibes music playing on speakers along the edge as I walked on the sandy tracks, the local voices, the quiet hum of a distant seaplane, or the splash of fish and dolphins jumping in the ocean or the lagoon. It was a gentle, but stark, reminder of how harsh and noise-filled our daily lifestyle can be.

I was thrilled to be able to hit the mute button in the Maldives.

Q & A

Recording artist and TV presenter Tania Kernaghan

shares a deep connection with the people and places of Australia.

What do you enjoy about travelling?

Most of my travels take me around Australia, and I feel incredibly fortunate to see so much of this beautiful country. What I love most is discovering the spirit of a place through the people who call it home.

Every town has its own personality, history and unique charm.

From the outback to the coast, I've found that the real magic of travel lies in the conversations, connections and communities you encounter along the way.

I have always said, ‘it’s the people and the community they create that make a town great’.

What has been your most memorable travel experience?

For over 14 years I have been a TV Host for the lifestyle caravan and camping program, What’s Up Downunder.

Most film shoots saw me either towing a caravan or driving a motorhome as we travelled to the various towns and regions we were showcasing on the program.

One of the more memorable trips was travelling the Peninsula Development Road to Cape York, our destination being Bamaga, near the very tip of Queensland. It was an adventure that took us through some extremely remote and breath-taking landscapes.

The road was full of corrugation and a lot of the time we travelled in the tabledrain to avoid the rugged conditions.

I was towing a caravan so I had to have my wits about me.

When we arrived and I stood at the northernmost tip of Australia's mainland and looked out across the Torres Strait it was one of those 'pinch me' kind of moments.

I never dreamed in a million years that I would be standing there.

If you are thinking of adding this trip to your bucket list, try to plan your journey just after the road grader has been through, it will surely make the road conditions more enjoyable.

Is there a particular place on your travel ‘bucket list’?

Yes, Uluru.

Window or aisle seat?

Window because of the ever-changing view ... some of my greatest ideas come to me gazing out the window at 30,000ft.

What is your most essential travel item? My pillow.

How do you pass time while in transit?

Listening to podcasts and music and on longer flights I’ll catch up on the latest movie releases.

Car, coach, plane or ship?

Definitely a car and my favourite seat in a vehicle is behind the wheel.

The reason I really enjoy driving is that it gives me the opportunity to take my time and also stop in small country towns and discover hidden gems along the way.

What is your favourite landmark?

The Pinnacles in Western Australia are really a sight to behold.

The limestone pillars, some standing up to 3.5 metres tall, look almost prehistoric particularly at sunrise or sunset.

I always wanted to visit them because my grandfather (Pop Roberts) was born in Geraldton, not too far from The Pinnacles.

He often told my mother stories about the thousands of spires rising up from the golden desert sands, to me it sounded fascinating.

What do you always do before you go?

Check the weather forecast so I pack the right clothes.

Cape York
The Pinnacles
Cradle Mountain

Is there one piece of travel advice you can share?

Be present and enjoy every moment whether you’re travelling for work or pleasure.

What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have ever tasted?

One of the most interesting dishes I have eaten would have to be a Camel Pie from the Birdsville Bakery.

I was curious to try it, at least once.

What is one destination that everyone should see in their lifetime?

Cradle Mountain in Tasmania would be high on my list. It's one of Australia's most beautiful natural wonders, but if you time your visit just right, you may be lucky enough to see the Aurora Australis – the Southern Lights.

Watching ribbons of pink, green and purple light dance across the night sky is nothing short of mesmerising. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

How has technology changed the way we travel today?

In many ways it has made travelling easier however, the dehumanisation of so many aspects is something I am not fond of.

What is your favourite Australian destination?

Queensland Outback … the people, the landscapes, the sunsets and the sense of community are unlike anywhere else in the world.

Every visit feels like coming home.

What have you bought on your travels that you really enjoy?

A JBL Flip speaker … I take it on all of my trips these days. I start the morning off with a playlist of ‘instrumental chill’ music and go to bed at night, unwinding to 528Hz or someone like Jack Jezzero.

Where have you just returned from and where to next?

I have just returned from emceeing an event in Mount Isa and next I am on tour heading to Victoria for shows kicking off in Ballarat and Horsham. I would like to add, this has been one of the more difficult interviews I have ever done because the questions open up a lifetime of wonderful memories and experiences and destinations that could fill a book. Far too many to include here, however, I hope this article has inspired you to see more of this country –Australia – that I love so much.

Behind THE WHEEL

Chris Nixon takes a look at what’s new in the world of motoring.

Ferrari Luce lights up a new direction

IF FERRARI’S GOAL was to secure massive global publicity, its controversial new electric vehicle called Luce certainly achieved that.

Not since Jaguar dumped its entire range, changed its revered badge and previewed its forthcoming EV in lurid colours has the automotive world been so outraged.

A four door ‘sedan’ – a Ferrari first – with a round-ish shape some likened to a pull-along Hoover, the Luce is like no Ferrari before it.

The Italian icon has been synonymous with the sound and drama of its V12 and V8 engines, but says the Luce is a car for a different, younger generation.

If Ferrari's existing typical owner base is 95 per cent male with an average age of 52 and four Ferraris, the Luce’s target buyer may be a 25-year-old tech company founder who is attracted by new and different things.

And the Luce includes anchor points for two baby seats.

In breaking with a tradition stronger than almost any global brand, as it did already with the Purosangué SUV, the test will be whether the Luce appears as anauthentic Ferrari in the spirit if not the form of past models.

Time will tell, but I’ll bet our local dealers are taking enquiries already.

Footnote: Ferrari engaged outsiders to design the Luce, including renowned Australian Mark Newson.

Pooh corner

CHINESE ELECTRIC vehicle brand Aito is looking to back its million-vehicle sales goal with some unconventional in-car features.

It’s evaluating whether to add an odourless toilet stored beneath a seat.

"When you've got to go, you've got to go," a company executive said.

Unstoppable Suzi

WANT AN unstoppable car for your kids?

The reliability of Suzuki vehicles is legendary.

Years ago when Holden sold a little hatchback called the Barina, which was simply a re-badged Suzuki Swift, an executive informed me the car cost the company a mere $6 a year in warranty claims.

Nothing has changed, apparently.

A recent survey ranked Suzuki first among 29 car makes with the lowest warranty claim rate.

The survey company said Suzuki’s simpler engineering and restrained technical complexity contributed to much stronger long-term reliability.

Pajero returns

AN OLD FAVOURITE is returning to our roads late this year as Mitsubishi announces the coming launch of its fifth-generation Pajero wagon, to be built in Thailand.

For many years a staple of the Australian off-roading scene, this time the rugged and reliable Pajero will face its traditional mid-large rival the Toyota Prado plus a fast-growing array of Chinese 4WDs.

Is your car a spy device?

SO-CALLED CONNECTED CARS are becoming common, allowing manufacturers to connect with owners over the internet for various purposes including software updates.

You might think that’s a good thing until you read that domestic spy agency ASIO has warned Canberra politicians against having sensitive conversations in connected cars.

ASIO deputy director-general Lisa Alonso Love told a Senate estimates hearing that members of parliament and public servants should avoid sensitive or classified discussions in any connected vehicle, noting that a networked car creates additional ‘vectors’ for data collection.

Although this warning could apply to all connected cars, the implication here is that Chinese EVs are the ones to watch.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the US moved earlier this year to ban the sale of Chinese-connected vehicle software and hardware.

None of this will surprise anyone who remembers that in 2018 the Federal Government cited security concerns when banning Chinese tech giant Huawei from taking part in the rollout of 5G mobile infrastructure.

A new LEAF

The Nissan Ariya EV combines smart design and superior quality.

BACK IN 2010, Nissan launched the Leading Environmentally Friendly Affordable Family Car.

Known otherwise as the LEAF, it was the world’s first mass-produced, zero-emission electric vehicle.

So you would imagine Nissan would now be ahead of the EV game. What happened?

As ground-breaking as the LEAF was, rivals including Tesla soon matched it and Nissan took until 2022 to launch just its second EV, the Ariya.

Make that late-2025 in Australia, by which time the LEAF had exited our showrooms.

Available in four grades priced between $55,840 and $71,840, the Ariya is the only Nissan EV offered here while other makes are throwing their models into the Australian market in unprecedented numbers.

Just 104 Ariyas were sold this year to the end of April.

Nissan says it's playing a waiting game for better conditions while concentrating on hybrid versions of its SUV/4WD range.

It isn’t cheap for a small-to-medium SUV (a fraction smaller in overall dimensions than the Toyota RAV4), but the Ariya stands out for its smart design and premium, traditional Japanese quality.

It won a gold Australian Good Design Award last year, something that can’t be underestimated when many Chinese SUVs sport almost-invisible looks.

The range comprises models called Engage ($55,840) and Advance ($59,840), which have single-motor, two-wheel drive and 63 kiloWatt batteries giving a nominal 385 kms driving range.

Next up, Advance+ ($63,800) has an 87 kW battery and a healthy 504 kms range.

Evolve e-4ORCE ($71,840) has the same battery but two motors almost doubling power plus 4WD.

Every version is very well equipped, the features list starting with items including twin digital screens, automatic lights, wipers and mirror dipping, LED headlights, rear-view camera, wireless phone charger and navigation.

The Evolve e-4ORCE boasts the year’s most unnecessary feature, a power-sliding centre console lid.

Inside and out, the design and finish is elegant and crisp, without pointless embellishment.

It’s roomy inside, with a full-width flat floor.

The Ariya’s a good drive, EV-silent and smooth, of course.

There’s a notable difference in acceleration between the Evolve e-4ORCE and the three lower versions.

I found the ride comfort a little stiff – others mightn’t – but the roadholding and corner grip are excellent for an SUV weighing around two tonnes.

Overall, the Advance+ appears to be the best combination of price versus comfort/convenience features and EV performance.

It’s a smart looker outside, while the vehicle's interior design, quality and comfort are right on the money.

All cars carry a 10-year vehicle warranty, 8-year battery warranty, 10 years roadside service and fixed-price servicing.

Market FORECAST

Early signs emerge of how the Budget is impacting the property market.

THIS YEAR’S FEDERAL BUDGET has definitely thrown a spanner in the works for the property market by upending everything that buyers had banked on for years to make an informed decision.

While the reasons for changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount continue to be debated, the early impacts on an already softening market are starting to emerge.

Forecasts of property price corrections following the Budget changes have been rife as some investors look to sell, although others may be locking in for the long term to preserve their grandfathered tax benefits.

Anecdotal evidence even suggests that landlords who are sticking with their investments are looking to increase rents to cover rising costs, but firm evidence of this could be months away.

The most recent data from SQM Research offers the first insights into the post-Budget trends emerging, notably a 10.4 per cent month-on-month increase in national property listings to 258,803 dwellings in May.

This highlights a spike in the number of property owners looking to sell.

SQM says national listings are now 0.8 per cent higher year-on-year, making it the first annual increase in available housing stock in more than a year.

Brisbane listings increased more than any other capital in May, up 18.5 per cent over the month to 16,973 properties, but stock levels were still marginally lower than a year earlier – down 1.1 per cent.

Perth listings were up 16 per cent to 15,230 dwellings, making May the third consecutive month of increases.

Still, the figure is 9.8 per cent below May 2025, which SQM says indicates a ‘meaningful easing’ in one of Australia’s tightest housing markets.

Brisbane and Perth have been among the strongest property performers in recent years, and this is reflected in listing numbers yet to breach 12-month highs.

But Sydney, where listings rose 14.8 per cent in May, and Melbourne, up 10.7 per cent, also saw a flood of new housing stock hit the market, pushing them to be 11.6 per cent and 12.1 per cent higher respectively year-on-year.

The SQM data is in tune with the latest price growth statistics from Cotality which show a flatlining in May for property values nationally as more homes hit the market.

Cotality’s national Home Value Index sat at zero per cent in May as the housing cycle continued to weaken across most markets, led by Sydney and Melbourne, which were down 0.9 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively.

Both the Sydney and Melbourne markets have been under pressure for some time, and the latest data confirms this.

In comparison, Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, Hobart and Adelaide each recorded gains in May ranging from 1.5 per cent to 0.5 per cent.

Cotality research director Tim Lawless sums up the two-speed price data succinctly.

“While the speed of value change remains very different from city to city, the direction is becoming more consistent, with most markets losing momentum as demand-side headwinds intensify,” he says.

It’s an opinion shared by Louis Christopher, managing director of SQM Research, based on his analysis of property listings.

"May's data points to a market that is losing momentum,” says Mr Christopher.

“National listings recorded their strongest monthly rise in some time and have moved back into positive annual territory for the first time in over a year.

“When supply returns this quickly while prices stall, it is usually an early sign that the market is at turning point, keeping in mind April recorded a seasonally low level of listings."

According to SQM, the asking price for houses nationally was unchanged in May compared with April, but unit asking prices rose 0.7 per cent.

Combined dwelling asking prices rose just 0.1 per cent, although they were still 10.4 per cent up on the same time last year.

"The flat national price reading masks what is actually happening across the major capitals,” says Mr Christopher.

“Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide all recorded monthly falls in combined asking prices.

“The only markets still rising are the three smallest – Canberra, Darwin and Hobart.

“With five of the eight capitals now declining month-on-month, the moderation we flagged earlier this year is broadening.”

The market easing, which broadly began with the latest cycle of interest rate increases, is also reflected in a 5.1 per cent lift in distressed listings nationally to 3,847 properties in May, led by Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland, which were all up around 9 per cent.

“The annual figure is still negative, but year-on-year comparisons lag; the monthly trend is what matters here, and it is rising,” says Mr Christopher.

“The ACT is already 38 per cent above where it was a year ago.

“We are watching this closely as an early indicator of mortgage stress.

"This is consistent with the more cautious view we have held since March.

“With inflation sticky and rate relief pushed further out, the larger capitals – Sydney and Melbourne in particular – remain the most exposed.

“The balance of risk has clearly shifted to the downside, and the next few months will confirm whether May was the inflection point."

Harmony A VISION OF

Esperance Hope Island celebrates a new chapter as demand accelerates.

WHAT BEGAN AS A VISION for luxury waterfront retirement living is now firmly a reality, with Esperance Hope Island moving into its next chapter.

With strong demand and fewer homes available, the community has quickly shifted from launch to a near sell-out success.

Stage 1 is now fully sold, while Stage 2, ‘Essence’, is over 90 per cent sold.

Construction on Stage 3, ‘Harmony’, is now powering ahead with the opportunity to secure a home at this prestigious waterfront community becoming increasingly limited.

Reside Communities CEO Glen Brown said the community’s rapid progression from launch in 2023 to today reflected both market confidence and the strength of the offering.

“The response to Esperance has been exceptional,” he said.

“To see Stage 1 fully sold and Stage 2 –Essence – now down to its final apartments really reflects the certainty people have in both the location and the community.

“Buyers recognise quality, and they move quickly when they see it.”

Glen added that the strong momentum was now carrying into Stage 3 as construction progress continues to reinforce buyer confidence.

With just a limited number of residences remaining in Essence (Stage 2) and early sales already recorded in Harmony (Stage 3), opportunities within the Esperance community are becoming scarcer.

“There’s a real shift once people can physically see the building taking shape,” Glen said.

“Harmony has now topped out, scaffolding is starting to come down, and the lower levels are nearing completion.

“It’s no longer conceptual – it’s tangible, and that’s when we really start to see buyers lining up.

“As we move closer to completion later in 2026, we expect demand to continue to strengthen,” he added.

“For buyers who have been watching the project, now is the time to act.”

Comprising 77 apartments and nine villas, Stage 3 continues the architectural and lifestyle direction established in earlier stages of the community.

It also introduces additional features, including its own pool and barbecue area.

Residents already enjoy a suite of five-star amenities, comprising a resort-style health club, indoor therapy pool, gym, yoga and Pilates studio, cinema, café and bar, private dining room with

caterer’s kitchen and wine storage, hair and beauty salon, and library – all designed to bring convenience and connection into everyday life.

In addition, the Podium Green creates a vibrant community hub, complete with water features, walking paths and lush lawns, plus a boardwalk running the full length of the 150-metre canal frontage.

David Frost and his wife Caroline made the move to Stage 2 just over a year ago, after more than 30 years in their family home.

“We were starting to think about downsizing, but we weren’t particularly keen on a traditional retirement village,” David said.

“When we came into Esperance and saw the apartments, the layout, the feeling of the place – we were taken in straight away.

“We actually put a deposit down that same day.”

Today, their two-bedroom apartment offers elevated views across the water, with the everyday convenience of Hope Island Marketplace just across the road and the vibrant lifestyle hubs of Sanctuary Cove and Paradise Point only minutes away.

“You’ve got everything at your doorstep,” David explains.

Artist Impression Only

“Shops, cafés, dining – it’s all right there. It just makes life very easy.”

Equally important is the sense of community.

“We’ve made plenty of friends,” David said.

“We use the pool and the gym, play table tennis with another couple, and do ‘Meet and Greets’ in the cafe once a week.”

That lived experience has played a significant role in driving demand.

What’s more, the buying journey is evolving to match, with new ways for prospective residents to experience Esperance before making their move.

A new suite of high-end digital renders and immersive ‘flow tours’ are also set to launch soon, allowing buyers to virtually walk through Harmony (Stage 3) residences and explore refined finishes ahead of completion.

Together, these experiences are transforming how buyers engage with the project and accelerating decision-making at a time when availability is becoming increasingly limited.

For those considering their next move, the shift is clear. Esperance Hope Island is no longer about what’s coming, it’s about what’s already here and not missing out.

Winning DESIGNS

The 2026 Australian Interior Design Awards showcase a considered collection of projects.

PRESENTED BY THE Design Institute of Australia and Architecture Media’s InteriorsAu, the Australian Interior Design Awards highlight the depth and calibre of interior design.

Now in its 23rd year, the awards are widely regarded as the industry’s leading benchmark for excellence and innovation, celebrating interior design both nationally and internationally.

Recognising outstanding work across residential, commercial and public sectors, this year 228 projects made the awards shortlist, showcasing a considered collection of projects that demonstrate creativity, authenticity and thoughtful design.

Entries were evaluated across a range of sectorspecific categories such as residential, retail, hospitality, public, workplace, and installation design, alongside awards for Sustainability Advancement and Emerging Interior Design Practice categories.

“The high calibre of entries again surpassed expectations,” stated The Australian Interior Design Awards jury.

“While diversity, flexibility and adaptability were evident across all categories, the projects that stood out showcase great innovation and a sense of authenticity best expressed through exquisite materiality and detailing.”

Some of the Queensland projects on the shortlist included Alexander and Co for LiTO and Haven at the Mondrian Gold Coast, J.AR Office for Marlowe and Golden Avenue Brisbane and Studio Plenty for Bar Monte Newstead.

Tasmania’s The Forest by Woods Bagot took out the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design at a Gala event held at the Sofitel, Sydney.

The Forest is the University of Tasmania’s flagship Hobart campus, providing an innercity hub for learning, research, collaboration and community.

Hospitality Design was awarded to two projects, with J.AR Office named joint winner for the Australian bistro Marlowe, which was also awarded Best of State for Queensland.

The Australian Interior Design Awards jury described Marlowe as ‘one of the awards’ most unique projects to date [with a] juxtaposition of contemporary furniture and nostalgic styling [making the] apartment-turned-restaurant a truly evocative and theatrical head-turner’.

The Australian Interior Design Awards remains the only interior design awards program in Australia that is 100 per cent peer judged.

Italian Leather Living: introducing Gamma Arredamenti at Sovereign Interiors. Artisanal EXCELLENCE

IN AN ERA INCREASINGLY defined by immediacy, there remains something profoundly luxurious about objects created slowly – pieces shaped not by speed or convenience, but by craftsmanship, heritage and a commitment to enduring beauty.

While much of contemporary design has shifted toward transient trends and mass production, true luxury continues to be found in the rare objects created with intention; pieces designed not simply for a season, but to remain relevant, admired and deeply lived with for decades.

It is within this grounded philosophy that Gamma Arredamenti, one of Italy’s most distinguished leather furniture houses, has quietly built its reputation over the past 50 years.

Exclusively represented in Australia by Sovereign Interiors, Gamma represents a particular understanding of luxury furniture design – one rooted not in excess, but in material integrity, artisanal craftsmanship and a deeply personal approach to the way furniture is created.

Founded in Italy and celebrating its 50th anniversary, Gamma has spent decades refining a craft few manufacturers in the world continue to execute at such a high level: the art of handcrafting exceptional leather furniture entirely tailored to the individual.

Because true luxury has never been about owning more – it has always been about owning better.

Every Gamma piece begins within the workshops of Italy, where highly skilled artisans continue a generational tradition of leather craftsmanship that has remained central to the country’s design identity for decades.

Yet while heritage defines the foundation of the brand, what distinguishes Gamma within the luxury market is the extraordinary level of customisation offered with every individual piece.

Unlike conventional furniture production, Gamma approaches each design as something deeply personal.

Every sofa is handcrafted to order, allowing complete control over dimensions, modular

configurations, stitching techniques, seat comfort, arm detailing, metal finishes and – perhaps most importantly – leather selection.

The result is furniture that feels less like a purchased object and more like something commissioned; a piece carefully considered around the architecture of the home and the lifestyle of the individual living within it.

Among Gamma’s most recognised designs is the Vincent – a beautifully balanced sofa that captures the effortless sophistication synonymous with contemporary Italian design.

Relaxed yet sculptural, understated yet quietly commanding, Vincent reflects the principles that have long defined exceptional European furniture design: generous proportions, remarkable comfort and a refined visual restraint that allows the quality of craftsmanship to speak for itself.

It is luxurious without feeling performative –elegant in a way that feels entirely natural.

Yet perhaps the true artistry of Gamma lies not in its silhouettes, but in its extraordinary relationship with leather itself.

At Sovereign Interiors, the experience of selecting a Gamma piece extends far beyond aesthetics.

The process is approached with the same level of consideration one might expect when commissioning a bespoke garment or selecting fine leather accessories – centred around understanding not only how a piece will look, but how it will be experienced over time.

The brand offers an extensive collection of leathers spanning a remarkable range of textures, finishes and grades, each designed to respond to different lifestyles while maintaining the unmistakable beauty associated with Italian craftsmanship.

For contemporary family homes or high-use living spaces, Grade C and Grade E leathers offer exceptional durability while retaining the softness, richness and character expected of premium natural hide.

Practical yet beautifully refined, these leathers allow luxury to exist comfortably within everyday life.

For interiors seeking greater warmth and tactile softness, Vintage Grade F leather introduces a more relaxed material expression.

With a beautifully velvety finish reminiscent of aged suede, it creates depth and softness within a room, offering a quieter and more intimate interpretation of luxury.

At the pinnacle of Gamma’s collection sit the remarkable Grade H and Grade J nubuck leathers.

These are materials selected not simply for visual beauty, but for sensation.

Exceptionally soft beneath the hand, deeply nuanced in colour and extraordinarily refined in finish, they create an immediate sensory connection – embodying the kind of understated

sophistication increasingly associated with the world’s most respected luxury houses.

Inside Sovereign Interiors’ showrooms, this selection process becomes part of the experience itself.

Leather samples are handled carefully, subtle stitching variations studied closely and material combinations considered with remarkable precision, allowing every decision to feel intentional.

Because exceptional furniture should respond not simply to aesthetics, but to life itself.

Will the piece sit within a formal entertaining space designed for occasion, or within a home centred around relaxed everyday living?

Is durability paramount, or does the experience of touch take precedence?

Should the final aesthetic feel architectural and structured, or warm, organic and inviting?

Each answer shapes the final piece.

This is where Gamma’s craftsmanship becomes particularly compelling.

Its furniture possesses the unmistakable language of luxury, yet remains entirely liveable – beautiful, but never delicate.

Sophisticated, yet designed to be used and admired every single day.

For Sovereign Interiors, Gamma Arredamenti represents something increasingly rare within modern design: furniture created with soul, shaped by heritage and defined by permanence.

For over five decades, the Gamma artisans have quietly perfected the balance between artistry and comfort.

Furniture designed not simply to occupy a room – but to become part of the life lived within it.

Timeless, deeply personal and unmistakably Italian.

Quiet REFINEMENT

Calmness at the water's edge: Alexandra Buchanan Architecture's Hope Island Residence.

THERE IS A PARTICULAR quality of light at play on Queensland's Gold Coast waterways – diffuse in the early morning, sharp and relentless by midday, softened again at dusk to something almost amber.

It is a light that tests architecture, and architecture that ignores it rarely ages well.

The Hope Island Residence, completed in 2025 by Alexandra Buchanan Architecture, does not ignore it ... it is shaped entirely by it.

Situated within the canal network of Hope Island, the 407-square-metre home is one of the more considered responses to waterfront living to emerge from South-East Queensland in recent years.

Where many canal homes reach eagerly toward the water with glass and spectacle, this build is more considered in its approach –restrained at the street, generous at the water’s edge and precisely calibrated in between.

The house is organised as a series of sculpted volumes arranged along the canal frontage.

Living spaces unfold toward the water through a layered sequence of indoor and outdoor environments, each one drawing the occupant a little further into the landscape.

Terraces, covered external rooms and integrated planting extend daily life outward, and the boundary between architecture and water is dissolved almost entirely by expansive glazing that captures the canal's shifting light throughout the day.

That openness is earned, not assumed.

The street elevation delivers this feeling by doing the opposite – deliberately restrained, private and grounded, it protects the home's interior world from the public realm.

The contrast is quietly dramatic: approach the house from the street and you encounter a calm, composed facade; move through it toward the water and the whole world opens up.

The material palette – off-form concrete, natural stone, timber – anchors the project in its coastal setting without reaching for novelty.

These are materials that will weather and age with dignity, that carry tactile weight and read honestly in both harsh sunlight and overcast conditions.

Deep overhangs and recessed openings manage the subtropical climate without mechanical intervention, shading interiors at the right times of day and easing the transition between inside and out.

What sets the project apart is how completely the interior design, landscape and architecture are integrated as a single resolved system.

Joinery, planting, spatial sequencing and material choice all work from the same skillset – calmness, openness, a sense of place –producing a home that feels inevitable rather than designed, as though it simply belongs here.

That kind of resolution is rarely accidental … it is the product of a particular way of practising.

Alexandra Buchanan founded her Brisbanebased studio in 2011, and in the years since has built a practice defined less by a visual signature than by a set of values – narrative, context and what she describes as a long-term, ethical approach to architecture.

Registered in both Australia and the United Kingdom, she has guided the studio's growth across Brisbane and Melbourne, leading a multidisciplinary team of architects, interior designers and Passive House-accredited designers.

Her process, by her own account, begins with listening.

Projects emerge from close observation of clients, sites and place, and the design that follows favours atmosphere, proportion and material expression over gesture.

The result tends to be architecture that is quiet and yet expressive – work revealed in moments of discovery rather than announced on arrival.

The Hope Island Residence is exactly that kind of project.

Sustainability and passive design principles are woven throughout Alexandra’s thinking, and at Hope Island, they manifest not as a checklist of features but as a fundamental orientation toward climate, light and material responsibility.

The architecture performs because it is conceived around performance – shading, ventilation, thermal mass – rather than because technology has been bolted on afterward.

Beyond the studio, Alexandra contributes to the architectural community as a mentor and juror and is an active member of the Australian Institute of Architects in Queensland.

She advocates for accessible, research-led design and remains committed to thoughtful leadership and ongoing education – a posture that places her practice in dialogue with the broader discipline, not apart from it.

The Hope Island Residence is the kind of project that rewards time.

It will not shout at you from across the canal. But sit on one of those covered terraces in the late afternoon, with the light moving across the water and the concrete warm from the day's sun, and you will understand exactly what this architecture is doing.

It is doing what the best residential architecture always does: it is making a life feel larger than it would otherwise be.

ExpertARBORISTS

Tree Essence is redefining what it means to care for trees on the Gold Coast.

DRIVE ALONG ALMOST any street on the Gold Coast and you will find them – those towering canopies that turn suburban roads into green corridors, the century-old figs anchoring local parks, the palms that frame the beach skylines.

Trees are woven into the identity of this city.

Yet how often do we stop to ask who is genuinely qualified to look after them?

Tree Essence is a Gold Coast-based arboricultural company operating across South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales – and in a market where the term arborist is effectively unregulated, it has built its reputation on something that cannot be faked: genuine expertise, rigorous professional standards, and a holistic approach to tree care that puts long-term outcomes ahead of the quickest or easiest solution.

“Obviously trees don't exist in isolation – and neither does good arboriculture," says Jamie Montgomery, AQF Level 5 Arborist and Tree Essence Founder.

“We look at the whole picture: the soil, the structure, the site, the long term. That's what separates tree care from tree cutting.”

A Holistic Approach to Tree Care

What sets Tree Essence apart from most tree service companies is not simply what they do, but how they think.

Rather than arriving at a site with a predetermined outcome in mind, the team applies a holistic lens – considering a tree’s structural condition and its value to the broader landscape before any recommendation is made.

That means a tree that a less considered operator might remove is often retained, treated and managed.

Where structural cabling systems can be installed to reduce failure risk in a co-dominant or compromised tree, that option is explored before removal is considered.

Where soil health is a contributing factor – as it so often is in compacted urban environments – targeted treatments are used to support root function and long-term tree vitality.

Tree Essence is a Qualified Contractor with both the Queensland Arboricultural Association (QAA) and the national peak body, Arboriculture Australia – affiliations that carry genuine professional development obligations and ethical standards, and that signal a commitment to the industry well beyond simply turning up with equipment.

Full-Spectrum Capability

Tree Essence offers an end-to-end range of arboricultural services that few operators in the region can match under one roof:

• Formal arborist reporting for builders, developers and commercial clients navigating council approval processes.

• Visual Tree Assessments (VTA) for structural health and risk evaluation.

• AS 4373-2007 compliant pruning – including corrective, formative, canopy reduction and clearance works.

• Structural cabling system installation to retain trees that would otherwise require removal.

• High-risk removals including large-scale and technically complex dismantling with specialist rigging and lowering systems.

• Stump grinding and site clearing.

• Soil health treatments including Trichoderma inoculation and soil injection with an in-house developed formula.

• Palm care and installation, including craneassisted large-specimen works.

• Wildlife habitat box fabrication from salvaged site timber.

• Artificial hollow creation using specialised tooling – an environmental option for trees a client needs to address from a safety standpoint.

• Storm response and emergency works across residential, commercial, rural and institutional sites.

That depth of capability matters because tree management challenges are rarely simple.

Having a company that can assess, treat, retain, remove, report and rehabilitate – and move fluidly between those modes on the same site – delivers outcomes that fragmented contractors cannot.

An Environmental Option

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Tree Essence practice is the genuine environmental agency it offers clients who are faced with difficult decisions.

When a tree must be addressed for safety reasons, Tree Essence presents options that most companies simply do not have the tools or expertise to offer.

The first is artificial hollow creation: using specialised tooling, the team can carve functional wildlife hollows directly into a standing dead tree or retained trunk – creating habitat for possums, owls, gliders and microbats where a removal would otherwise have erased it entirely.

The second is habitat box fabrication.

When a tree is removed from site, Tree Essence can mill the timber from that same tree into handcrafted wildlife habitat boxes, which are then installed on site or across the broader property.

The material comes from the tree itself, then the habitat goes back into the landscape – it is a closed loop that transforms a loss into a lasting ecological contribution.

Together, these options mean clients are never left with a simple binary between safety and environment.

Tree Essence makes it possible to honour both.

“Every mature tree is an ecosystem in its own right," says Jamie.

“Our job is to understand that ecosystem – and protect it wherever we can.”

A Track Record Built in the Field

The relationships Tree Essence maintains speak to the kind of company it has become.

Southport State High School has been a client for more than a decade – a relationship spanning routine annual canopy management through to rapid storm response when significant weather damage occurred across the site in 2025.

That continuity of care, and the institutional trust behind it, is not something that happens by accident.

At a rural property in Beechmont following a major storm event, the team managed a full site recovery – assessing structural failures, installing cabling systems to retain compromised trees wherever viable, and then transitioning into an ongoing annual management program.

The preference, wherever structurally sound, is always retention over removal.

The Reporting Standard Builders and Developers Rely On

In Queensland, the term arborist carries no formal regulatory protection – in theory, anyone can use it.

What matters for council submissions, development approvals and compliance processes is the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level behind the signature on the report.

Tree Essence’s principal holds an AQF Level 5 – a Diploma of Arboriculture – the highest tier of formal arboricultural qualification in Australia, and the benchmark required for expert-level reporting accepted by Gold Coast City Council and other planning authorities.

Formal arborist reports produced for builders, developers and commercial clients address Australian Standards including AS4970-2025, provide actionable Construction Management Plan recommendations, and are written to the technical standard that planning processes demand.

For project teams managing development timelines, it is the kind of capability that removes uncertainty from the tree compliance process entirely.

The Right Call for the Gold Coast’s Trees

The Gold Coast is a city in constant tension between development pressure and the green infrastructure that makes it liveable.

Getting that balance right requires tree professionals who understand both sides of the equation – who can recommend removal when it is genuinely necessary, retention and treatment when it is viable, and who bring the credentials, tools and holistic judgement to make that call with confidence.

Whether you are a homeowner with a tree causing concern, a body corporate managing mature trees and maintenance, a builder or developer requiring a councilready arborist report, or a business looking for a long-term tree care partner – Tree Essence is the call worth making first. treeessence.com.au

Our friendly team of tree care professionals, led by a qualified level 5 arborist, adheres to the highest safety standards to expertly care for your trees.

Whether you are creating a glowing outdoor space with fairy lights, maintaining the health of trees and palms through tailored treatments such as pruning and soil injection or if you’re needing the safe removal of hazardous trees, we bring care and expertise to every tree.

Featuring the STARS ALIVE! Talent Quest, live music, food trucks, kid’s activities and a sunset performance by inaugural STARS ALIVE! winner Sari Abbott, and surprise Golden Guitar winning guest artist, this promises to be a fitting finale.

Heavy, aching legs?

Many people put it down to age or being on their feet - but it may be an early sign that your veins aren’t working properly.

Blood can begin to pool in the legs, causing pressure, swelling and discomfort.

Modern treatments are often minimally invasive, with little downtime. A proper assessment can help to determine the cause.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

This is a good time to make changes at work and financially, especially in the first week of July and mid-July. Opportunities and fast transformation can arise, but you must keep communications on an even keel to avoid disruptions. Be prepared to be flexible and to avoid risk-taking. The total solar eclipse in Leo on August 13th kick-starts a new chapter in your personal life.

Stars

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

July and August are excellent for bringing a sense of excitement and exploration into your life. You may be drawn to travel or to take up fresh projects. Both the new moon on July 14th and the eclipses on August 13th and 28th bring a fresh understanding of a person or an environment – or both! As you’ll be drawn to fresh experiences, it’s important that you remain grounded.

ARIES

21 Mar – 20 Apr

It’s all change for you now and you’ll need to exercise caution both financially and with your communications. And when you do, you could excel. You may encounter a wonderful opportunity financially as July brings the chance to re-imagine this important aspect of your life. What’s more, the eclipses on August 13th and 28th could bring a transformation in your love life.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

July takes you towards a fresh arrangement in your personal life, which may involve a surprise. Mercury retrograde until July 23rd will provide you with a deeper understanding of your circumstances and will enable you to make choices. Be careful with communications until mid-August. August’s eclipses will encourage you to reorganise the way you share some duties or finances.

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

This is an excellent phase to look at your loyalties and affiliations in a new light. You’ll find an ingenious way to move forward. For some, this will mean new arrangements at work; for others in your personal life. If money has been tight, a fresh budget could work. The eclipses taking place on August 13th and 28th could also open doors to a new relationship with a fresh social group.

SCORPIO

24 Oct – 22 Nov

Be prepared to consider a fresh chapter in a personal or professional relationship. Focus on being positive so that you create an acceptable outcome. The new moon on July 14th will refresh a situation that subsequently opens doors. For some, this will be in your career and for others, at home. The eclipses on August 13th and 28th will also help to transform your relationships.

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

Stability and security are important qualities and yet it’s important to avoid allowing stability to stifle your personal growth. So this winter, you’ll appreciate the opportunity to invest in your love life, family or a property. You may also view some of your shared responsibilities, investments or duties in a way that can deepen or improve a key relationship.

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

It’s time for a fresh perspective! You’re no stranger to trying new things, but if you see that some of your daily routine is lacking in structure, it’s important to create some order over the next two months, especially in relation to your home or family life. In August, you may experience a development that will ultimately positively impact your daily work or health schedule.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

The saying ‘be positive’ can sound easier than it is! But mastering this ability to be optimistic in July and August will benefit you, as you may otherwise find this phase a little chaotic. If you decide to open new doors, you’ll experience a potentially healing development, either at home or within a relationship. Be positive – and your love life could thrive too.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

Use your ability to be practical, as you may be drawn to alter your status at work or in your personal life. And, while new opportunities are likely, the new moon on July 14th may appear intense. Some Taureans will already experience a surprise development early in July. Another intense phase is likely between August 13th and 28th. Keep your feet on the ground for best results.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

In July, you’re likely to experience something new, which may also be a surprise, so be prepared to be realistic. Mercury retrograde in your money zone until July 23rd will be an excellent time to review your finances. Mars in Gemini until August 12th will be motivational, and the eclipses in August will bring fresh focus to travel and relationships, which you’ll appreciate.

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

Increased energy and optimism will keep your mood positive. However, you’ll need to take extra care with communications to avoid conflict arising during July and August. The Cancer new moon on July 14th will encourage you to exit a phase you’ve outgrown, so be prepared to take the initiative. Keep an eye on your budget in August; you may even consider developing a fresh approach.
