Dress Code Reminder ...

Per the Club’s Rules & Regulations (Section 1: House Rules), members are responsible for ensuring they and their guests follow the dress code:

• Formal Areas (Living Room, Foyer, Crystal Mather): Men and older boys 14 and older must wear jackets. Ties are optional.

• Blue denim (including jackets) is not allowed at the Club.

• Gentlemen and boys must remove hats and caps while sitting in a dining area in the Clubhouse.

• Hats must be worn forward in permitted outdoor areas.

• Hats allowed in transit through the Men’s Locker Room.

• Casual Areas (The Terrace, Men’s Grill, Soda Grill, Spoon & Niblick, Flynn Grill, Flynn Lounge, and on the golf course): Appropriate attire includes golf shirts, slacks, Bermudalength shorts, and skirts of similar length for women. Collared shirts for men and boys should be tucked in.

PRESIDENT

ANDREW R. VOLLMER, PRESIDENT

The excitement and energy at the Country Club is apparent as we enjoy the summer season and move past the long, cold winter and spring here in Pepper Pike. The next few months should provide an outstanding member experience, with a fantastic golf course and golf events, racquet events, holiday picnics, swim team and the many children’s events on the schedule.

I’m honored and excited to become Club President, taking over from John Krieger. In total, John has dedicated nine years of Board service to the Club, the last two as President. His sound judgement and leadership have been critical, most notably with the Clubhouse Restoration Project and the creation of the new capital funding plan. I’ve valued John’s mentorship, and plan to continue the positive groundwork led by previous Presidents, Boards and Committees of the Club.

We are fortunate to have a strong, dedicated Board of Trustees at the Club, and their guidance and judgement are essential. I’d like to sincerely thank outgoing trustees Adam Conrad and Jon Pinney for their valued contributions and commitment to the Club and acknowledge Jon Pinney for his additional five years of service as Club Secretary prior to joining the Board. At the same time, we are excited to welcome three new Trustees – Steve Fitzgerald, Matt Ottaway and Tom Weidenkopf. Together, we will work hard to maintain and improve our facilities, services, and member experience.

Speaking of member experience, I wanted to briefly address a few topics. First, the fescue issue. As has been communicated, last September an outside contractor operating a drone misapplied herbicide in certain of our fescue areas. For perspective, approximately five acres out of a total of 35 acres of fescue were impacted. In early May, these five acres were reseeded or sodded, and the results have been encouraging. Turf establishment has progressed well, and the appearance of these areas has improved significantly. We expect continued improvement throughout the growing season as the new turf matures and fills in. Second, you may have noticed the expanded Burke’s Bar menu, which is now exclusive to the Burke’s and patio areas. This change was in response to service issues experienced last summer on a handful of occasions in the upstairs dining areas. The root cause of these service issues was determined to be substantial main menu orders coming from Burke’s and the patio. Finally, with the Clubhouse Restoration Project behind us we are due for a refreshed Member Survey, which will launch in the Fall. The Board looks forward to your feedback and suggestions regarding service and facility priorities, member experience and areas for improvement.

This summer, I hope you take full advantage of everything the Club offers and I look forward to seeing you there. Thank you for your continued support of the Club.

New Year’s Eve Dinner & Kid’s Noon Years Eve

After a wet spring, we have finally been treated to some beautiful summer weather, and the Club has truly come to life. It has been wonderful to see members and their families enjoying everything the Club has to offer. From golf and aquatics to dining and family programming, the energy around the Club has made for an outstanding start to the season.

Our dining venues have been especially busy as members have taken advantage of the beautiful weather on the Dining Terrace and throughout the Clubhouse. The introduction of our new Burke’s Barstyle menu has been well received. The expanded offerings were thoughtfully designed to offer a complete selection while also allowing our culinary team to prepare and deliver meals more efficiently. The initial response has been very positive, and we believe these subtle improvements have enhanced the dining experience for members enjoying both Burke’s Bar and our upstairs dining rooms. Our Wednesday Pizza Nights remain a member favorite, bringing families and friends together for a relaxed evening at the Club.

The golf course has also been bustling with activity. It was exciting to hear so many positive comments following our inaugural Country Day, and our guest events have been equally successful. The Men’s Invitational and Ladies Invitational Day were both outstanding events, with the Ladies Invitational featuring an engaging discussion led by Director of Golf Steve Bordner with U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Angela Stanford. Our Friday Foursome events have also been well received, combining casual golf with Chef Scott’s on-course food stations and a relaxed social atmosphere. If you missed the first event, there are still two more opportunities to join us later this summer.

Families continue to be at the heart of everything we do at the Club. Friday Family Nights have become a favorite weekly tradition, drawing members together to enjoy themed evenings and dinner buffets. Camp Country and our Daily Junior Tennis Camps have also been filled with enthusiastic young members, providing another great way for families to make the most of their summer at the Club. The recent stretch of warm weather has also made for an exceptionally active pool season. Families have filled the pool on these hot days, while our Swim Team and Swim Lessons are off to a great start.

While the start of the season has been exceptional, there is still plenty to look forward to. We have an exciting lineup of events remaining, including the Men’s and Ladies Member-Member tournaments, Country Fest, and our always-popular Member-Member Dinner Dance. We also look forward to welcoming members to two special Dinner Under the Stars experiences on the Event Terrace, including the return of our popular Farm-to-Table Dinner and a new Martha’s Vineyard-inspired evening.

Thank you for making the start of the summer so enjoyable. Seeing the Club filled with members, families, and friends is what makes this place so special. We look forward to sharing many more memorable experiences with you throughout the remainder of the season.

MADDIE DOLCE, HEAD SWIM COACH

Things are going well for swim team this summer! We started the season with many young swimmers who had never been on swim team before. Now, we are about 2/3 of the way through the season, and swimmers are making so much progress. By this point, swimmers have learned all of the competition strokes, diving, and other rules of the sport.

One thing I’m proud of is our team’s sportsmanship. Throughout the season, we have had team conversations about what it means to be a good sport. I have noticed kids cheering for their teammates, giving high fives to opponents, and trying their best at every swim meet. I have enjoyed watching this great work as the swimmers develop and grow, but it’s hard to believe the season is almost over. After this week, we have one more dual meet and then it is time for Championships!

FOOD & BEVERAGE

SCOTT RYAN CEC, AAC, EXECUTIVE CHEF

With another summer in full swing, the Club is busier than I have ever experienced in my seventeen seasons. Our Culinary and Service teams are performing at an exceptional level, and we have been fortunate to retain many of our returning staff while also welcoming several new team members who have strengthened our operation.

We are preparing for another mid-summer menu refresh, along with a few exciting updates to Burke’s. The transition to eliminating à la carte menus at Burke’s has been a tremendous success, helping to reduce ticket times and improve the speed and consistency of service.

We also have several Dinner Under the Stars events on the calendar. Our first dinner will showcase the flavors of Martha’s Vineyard with a seafood-focused menu, followed by our popular Farm-to-Table dinner featuring as many locally sourced ingredients as possible from area farms.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to try our wood-fired pizzas yet, they have been a huge hit on Wednesday evenings on Burke’s patio and have also become a popular take-home option.

Before we know it, I’ll be planning our fall cooking classes and the next series of popup restaurants, and I look forward to sharing those details with you in the coming months.

As always, I look forward to seeing you around the Club. f’s Grill chef’s gri

MAH JONGG DINE & PLAY

Mah Jongg is alive and well at Country! Our active Mah Jongg players hosted a Dine & Play event in May where members were able to get together, enjoy a delicious buffet, and take part in some friendly competition. CLEVELAND SUPERSTARS

The Country Club turned in a historic performance at this year’s Cleveland Superstars, earning a second-place overall finish among 12 participating clubs. The result marks the Club’s best finish since capturing the championship in 1994.

Country’s success was fueled by strong performances across the board, including a runner-up finish in softball, a third-place finish in swimming, and fourth-place finishes in both volleyball and tennis. The team also added a sixth-place finish in golf, showcasing the depth and consistency that kept Country in contention throughout the three-day event.

The team also claimed a victory in the three-hole golf shootout, a standalone event that does not contribute to the overall Superstars standings but was a fitting highlight to an already impressive weekend.

More than the final standings, this year’s Superstars highlighted the camaraderie, competitive spirit, and pride displayed by every member who represented the club. Congratulations to all of the participants for helping deliver one of the most successful Superstars campaigns in more than three decades. Their effort and teamwork made for a memorable weekend and a result The Country Club can celebrate.

GREENS

MATT

POWELL, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

As we enter the heart of the golf season, our team has been working hard to establish a solid agronomic foundation and fine-tune the details to set us up for a great summer of golf. This foundation started with the spring aeration of greens, tees, and fairways. Additionally, we applied fertilizer to all playing surfaces to feed the turf and prevent crabgrass and grubs throughout the season.

As our team reached full staffing in June, we completed the remaining spring projects, addressed additional details, and began fully preparing the course for daily conditions. Our fescue recovery plan has been a major focus for our team over recent months, with new seed/ sod being established in affected areas. The areas have shown continued improvement as seeds have germinated once we received consistent temperatures. We were only able to apply our spring herbicide to areas without new seedlings to prevent injury to the juvenile turf. As the new turf matures this season, we will be able to begin addressing weeds that pop up. Controlling weeds and incorporating seed into any areas that have yet to fill in will be the ongoing theme for the remainder of the year. With all of this in mind, it will still be important to keep carts out of all fescue areas to help preserve them and allow for full recovery.

Bunker maintenance is a critical focus for our team each year (over 3,000 labor hours) as we strive to deliver consistent conditions throughout the golf course. Our annual bunker detail program includes replenishing sand to maintain optimal depths and firmness, ensuring predictable ball lies and playability for all members. We refine bunker edges and lips to preserve the original design contours and minimize sand washout or contamination. Additionally, the team inspects and maintains drainage systems within the bunkers to promote quick recovery after rainfall. Targeted weed control and vegetation management around bunker perimeters further enhance

their appearance and playability. These detailed efforts take place as we build the staffing necessary to provide uniform, highquality bunker conditions that complement the overall course experience.

Maintaining healthy playing surfaces is a cornerstone of our summer agronomic program. Our team employs targeted practices to support the turf through periods of heat and stress, ensuring greens, tees, and fairways remain resilient and provide excellent playing conditions. Careful course management during peak summer months helps prevent excessive wear from becoming apparent on the playing surfaces. Our team monitors traffic patterns closely and implements strategies to distribute play and protect high-use areas, thereby preserving overall course quality and condition for the enjoyment of all members. Thoughtful course care by members and staff is also essential to these efforts.

Our team will monitor moisture levels regularly and hand-water dry areas as needed throughout the day. This is a necessary practice to maintain uniform moisture levels while maintaining proper turf health during summer stress. Supplemental handwatering is also used to compensate for our aging irrigation system, which may not provide sufficient coverage. Non-disruptive cultural practices such as spiking, venting, and topdressing are periodically performed to allow oxygen into the greens’ profile and maintain root health. These practices also break up surface compaction, allowing water to infiltrate while preventing it from sealing off. These small changes to our maintenance practices/ traffic patterns allow us to reduce the wear the greens experience daily.

We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on the golf course this summer!

RACQUETS

CHRIS KLAMPE, DIRECTOR OF RACQUETS, USPTA P-1

Greetings racquets enthusiasts! I hope this article finds you well. I have seen so many of you down on the courts, whether it’s the tennis, pickle, and yes, even paddle courts. I can’t believe how popular summer paddle has become. When asked why the new popularity for the once cold weather only game, the players have sited three different compelling reasons. One, it’s too fun of a game not to have for an entire 3-4 months. Two, it’s great exercise and you will sweat like no other during the summer on those aluminum courts. And, finally, the players feel like they are still obtaining momentum in their skills and simply don’t want to take the break interrupting their “gains”. In my opinion, summer paddle is the time to try all the new things you may need in your game but are afraid to work on mid season. Paddle is a game of error management, and it’s tough to work on new facets that may create errors. Whether it’s working on a particular shot, a distinct strategy, or even a new grip that is the foundation of a skill you haven’t mastered yet, this is the time to work on things of this nature.

We had a great time last week with some members of Beechmont Country Club. Despite the insane on court temps of a measured 112 degrees, the ladies from both clubs competed and socialized and had a wonderful time being across the net from new people they don’t see very often

With weeks to go before the kids start panicking about the first day of school, we still have quite a few activities left down on the courts. Moving the signups to the club website and app have been a very convenient way to stay on top of events, and a clever way to manage your activities at the club. If you still haven’t figured out how to take advantage of the app and its abilities, feel free to reach out and I will help you. It’s a very intuitive process, and once you spend a little time on it, you will see events and signups you may have missed along the way this summer. Please see the advertised content and make sure you sign up for the next event before you miss out!!!

FITNESS & WELLNESS GROWING VEGGIES

Summer is one of the best times to be active in Cleveland. Between all the local farmers markets and Metroparks, there are plenty of ways to stay healthy and fit while enjoying the outdoors.

Summer fitness doesn’t have to mean a gym. It can mean exploring trails, visiting farmers markets, taking a family bike ride or swimming. Staying active in the summer can be fun, refreshing and a great way to build healthy habits. The best summer fitness routine is often the one that doesn’t feel like exercise.

Make outdoor activity part of your lives during our most beloved season here in Cleveland.

A Few Friendly Reminders

Per the Club’s Rules & Regulations (Section 13: Fitness Center), members are responsible for ensuring they and their guests follow etiquette and dress code rules for the Fitness Center:

Cleanliness

Please clean up after yourself.

Use sanitary wipes to clean equipment before and after each use. Use screen wipes to clean all monitors.

Used towels should be placed in the appropriate bin.

Water cups should be discarded in a waste basket. Bring a clean pair of shoes to change into before beginning your workout.

Electronic Devices

Talking on cell phones is strictly prohibited.

Members must use headphones when using electronic devices to watch television or listen to music.

Growing vegetables as a family can be a fun way to spend time together, teach kids where food comes from, and enjoy fresh produce.

START SMALL

Begin with a few easy vegetables rather than a large garden:

Lettuce

Cherry Tomatoes Radishes Zucchini Green Beans Snap Peas

These are generally forgiving and produce results fairly quickly.

CHOOSE A GOOD LOCATION

Most vegetables need: 6-8 hours of sunlight daily Good drainage Easy access to water

Dress Code

Attire should be tasteful and reflective of the Club’s conservative traditions.

• Neat, clean, and appropriate athletic attire is required. Shirts and fitness tops must cover the midriff.

• Shorts must be of an appropriate length.

• No torn or tattered clothing is permitted. Proper athletic footwear is required while using the Fitness Center.

• Open-toed shoes and sandals/flip-flops are not permitted.

Pair headphones with equipment whenever possible. The volume on the televisions should be kept off to avoid disrupting others.

If yard space is limited, raised beds or large containers work well.

SIMPLE FAMILY GARDEN PLAN

A beginner garden might incude:

2 Tomato Plants

1 Zucchini Plant

1 Row of Green Beans

1 Row of Lettuce

A small patch of herbs such as basil & parsley
