WELCOME FROM ANDA WINTERS I’m delighted to welcome back The Norwegian Ibsen Company to The Coronet Theatre! This is our second co-production with Kåre and his outstanding team, following The Lady from the Sea in those pre-pandemic days. Kåre Conradi and his team never fail to inspire and have again found ways to use our unique space at The Coronet in new and exciting ways. Under the direction of Norwegian theatre legend Kjetil Bang-Hansen, we’ve turned our slightly derelict performing space into a very derelict theatre set - art imitating life - or something like that. It’s also nice to have When We Dead Awaken back on stage. We put on an all-English version back in 2011, then called Judgement Day, at the old Print Room space. We like loose strands of continuity at The Coronet and Ibsen, Norway and Kåre drop in and out of our lives regularly. It’s always a pleasure.

WELCOME FROM KÅRE CONRADI I love the word flawful. Through life we stumble, we fall, rise and try to regain what we have lost. Try to regain lost life. Ibsen sees us as human beings sometimes better than we do. We learn more of who we truly are, what we hide from others and most importantly, what we hide from ourselves. As the flawful humans in When We Dead Awaken we can lose ourselves and desperately try to find our way back. Moving out of a pandemic we see rubble around us. Many of our fellow artists have left the industry to work elsewhere. They have resurfaced to a changed life. To many of us, the need to ask ourselves who we are, and what we are made of has become more important than ever. It is a great pleasure to collaborate with The Coronet Theatre and Artistic Director Anda Winters. She is an inspiration. I am so grateful for all the brilliant artists and the team involved in this production. I may know many facts on Ibsen, but as a human being I have barely scratched the surface of what he has to tell. So, I am especially grateful that, at the age of 81, our Norwegian national treasure Director Kjetil Bang-Hansen said yes to direct in the UK for the first time. Henrik Ibsen is the most performed dramatist in the world after William Shakespeare, however until recently Norway never had a professional Ibsen Company like The Royal Shakespeare Company or The Globe. Henrik Ibsen´s oeuvre is one of Norway’s most important cultural treasures, so we decided to take a crucial initiative to establish a dedicated Norwegian Ibsen company. Every single one of Ibsen’s plays speak to us still, and the company’s goal is to bring these stories out with great conviction and power. The Norwegian Ibsen Company will present Ibsen´s work to a high professional level, with the country’s leading Ibsen interpreters on stage. The actors will be bilingual, English and Norwegian. The Norwegian Ibsen Company is aiming for independent productions as well as co-productions with an exchange of expertise between artists from all over the world. Andrea Bræin Hovig Maia Rubek Andrea Bræin Hovig has performed since she was a child. She worked with Jon Fosse and Lars Norén, and played the leads in Romeo and Juliet, Iphigeia in Aulis, L’ecole Des Femmes, Chicago and Guys and Dolls. Many roles at the Norwegian National Theatre include leading roles in Ibsen’s The Wild Duck, The Lady from The Sea, Ghosts, and Hedda in Hedda Gabler on all three of the National Theatre stages – a first. She has also performed internationally. She has worked with director Kjetil Bang Hansen several times, most recently as Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac. She has worked on many film and TV productions, written three children’s books, and one novel for young adults. A new novel will be published 2022. Awards include: Friends of The National Theatre, The Kanon Award for films I belong and Hope, and The Film Critic’s Awards in 2014, 2020, and 2021. In 2019 she had major roles in three international films; Hope, Disco and Beware of Children, and was nominated Best Female Actress by European Film Awards for Hope, the first Norwegian speaking actor.
Øystein Røger last appeared at The Coronet Theatre in the critically praised The Lady From The Sea. A highly acclaimed and experienced actor, he has been a lifetime employee of The National Theatre of Norway (NTN) since 1993. Previous Ibsen parts include: Ghosts, Rosmersholm, A Doll's House, When We Dead Awaken, League of Youth, Love’s Comedy, Lady From The Sea, Brand and Peer Gynt. Awards include: The Hedda Award for Best Actor and The Norwegian Theatre Critics Award, both for To Damaskus. The Norwegian Theatre Director Association Award for Ghost, The Continental Award for Stones in His Pockets and The National Theatre Award. More than 70 productions at NTN include: To Damaskus, An Ideal Husband, Arcadia, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Shakespeare in Love, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Celebration and Cleansed. He is a highly acclaimed performer of Jon Fosse’s plays. He was an Artistic Director of NTN’s studiostage (20002003). Musical credits include The Rock’n Roll Wolf and Chess. TV and film includes: Post Mortem (Netflix Original Series), Oslo 31. August (Cannes Film Festival 2011), Beforeigners, Lilyhammer, Acquitted, Occupied and Struggle for Life.

Ragnhild Margrethe Gudbrandsen is known for her appearances on stage, TV and film. A lifetime leading employee at the National Theatre in Bergen (DNS), she debuted in 1993 in Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, in which she played all the female parts. She has a wide-ranging repertoire, performing in more than 60 productions including; Ibsen’s
Hedda Gabler, Almodovar’s All About My Mother, Jon Fosse’s Dream of Autumn, Trilogy and Wakefulness, Reza’s God of Carnage, Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Awards include outstanding stage performance for Shirley Valentine and The Seagull, and the 2018 nomination for performance of the year for Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. She has a considerable body of work as a singer, narrator, director and has dramatized several texts including a 2018 monologue of Babette’s Feast which she successfully toured in Norway. Ragnhild’s diverse theatrical experience has led to international projects in countries such as Russia, Austria, France and England. Ragnhild will play the part of Mother Åse in The Norwegian Ibsen Company production of Peer Gynt in Norway/ Grimstad/ Fjæreheia, in July 2022.
James has produced and performed in two independent film productions: Tree Keeper (2011) and Storage (2016) which he also co-wrote. Storage won Best Art House Film at the 2017 Stockholm Independent Film Festival. He also appeared in Maze (2017) and Without Name (2016) which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
Luisa Guerreiro Nun Luisa studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, and then furthered her training at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, achieving a distinction in Acting Musical Theatre, and winning The Christopher Wade Award for Excellence.
James Browne Ulfhejm James Browne was born in Cork, Ireland. He started acting after graduating from University College Cork with a Bachelor of Arts in 2005. He studied at École Philippe Gaulier. Theatre credits include: Much Ado About Nothing (The Ocean of Notions Theatre), Night Swimming (Clinic Media), Lipstick (Roundhouse Theatre), The Good Father (Meantime Theatre Company), Richard II (Ouroboros Theatre Company), 18 – 35 and The Scarlet Letter (Conflicted Theatre), Thomas Kent 1916 Rebel (Lantern Productions) and Cleansed (Granary Theatre) TV credits include: Dublin Murders (BBC One), Vikings (History Channel) and Éalú (TG4)
Luisa has an extensive portfolio of work across stage and screen, as both an actress and a movement artist. She is a physical comedy performer on the database for Cirque du Soleil, a puppeteer, vocalist, movement artist and choreographer, advanced stage and screen action combatant, creature performer, and performance capture artist. Previous work in Luisa’s portfolio include; Captain Corelli's Mandolin (Harold Pinter Theatre), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Disney), Horizon Zero Dawn (Guerrilla Games), Josh (BBC 3 Comedy), Dr Seuss's The Cat in the Hat (National Theatre & Young Vic), Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Ubisoft Montreal), The Christmasaurus Live (The Eventim Apollo), Teletubbies (CBBC), Jenna The Great (Amazon Prime Studios) and Tree Fu Tom (CBBC).
CREATIVE TEAM Kjetil Bang-Hansen Director Kjetil Bang-Hansen is one of the most revered and accomplished directors in Europe. During a career spanning over 60 years he was appointed Artistic Director of The National Theatre of Norway, been the recipient of every major theatre award in Norway and many in Europe, and published several books and writings about the art of theatre directing and stagecraft. He has directed When We Dead Awaken twice before, in 1990 at Theatre National de Strasbourg and in 1994 at Nationaltheatret in Oslo. His many productions include Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and A Doll’s House; Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Coriolanus; and contemporary British work by Harold Pinter, Michael Frayn and David Hare. Dramatizations of novels include Fjodor Dostojevskij's Crime and Punishment and Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander. Kjetil has undoubtedly made one of the most significant contributions to theatre in Norway in the last century as he continues to create new work and direct. Mayou Trikerioti Set and Costume Designer Mayou Trikerioti is a designer and dramaturg. She trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and University of Kent in Canterbury and has since worked in the UK and Greece at major theatres and festivals including the Greek National Theatre, the Ancient theatre of Epidavros, the Young Vic, the Rose Theatre in Kingston, and the Garrick and the Harold Pinter in the West End. She works on all scales grand and small, and her portfolio ranges from plays that enjoyed successful runs of two+ years to one-off, site-specific performances and from West End shows to fringe gems. Since 2007 Mayou has been designing for film and
movies that have opened at major film festivals including Venice Film Festival, Berlin and Toronto IFF. Mayou recently designed costumes for prolific director David Cronenberg’s forthcoming feature Crimes of the Future. Mayou also enjoys working on community art projects that engage local youth and residents. She is one of the founding members of Change of Art, a community arts project created by a group of theatre practitioners and artists and Wapping Open Studios. During the pandemic, she created an international Facebook group Reinventing the Performing Arts post COVID-19 in order to connect theatre professionals and problem solve what is happening right now globally and hosted global zooms. She graduated from the University of Winchester with a BA(Hons) in Stage Management and Performing Arts and RADA, gaining a Merit after studying a Postgraduate Diploma in Stage Electrics and Lighting Design. Amy made her West End début with Tooting Arts Club in association with Cameron Mackintosh as the Lighting Designer for their critically acclaimed Sweeney Todd. She won the 2015 Knight of Illumination Award in the Musicals category for this show. The show transferred to New York in 2017 where Amy received nominations for the Lucil Lortel Award and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design. She was nominated for an Office Award for her work on Babettes Feast at The Print Room and was a shortlisted artist for the Arts Foundation Award 2018. Recent theatre credits include:
Rockets and Blue Lights (National Theatre); Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner (Royal Court Theatre) (Co-design with Jessica HHY who lit the original production); The Boy with Two Hearts (Wales Millennium Centre) Peter Gregson Composer and Sound Designer Peter Gregson is a renowned Composer, Cellist, and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist with his fifth studio album ‘Patina’ released in late 2021. His music is regularly sought out by the most exciting choreographers and dance companies in the world, recently including Theatrehaus Stuttgart / Gauthier Dance, Joffrey Ballet, PA Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, and Ballet BC. Amongst his film credits, Roger Michell’s ‘Blackbird’ (starring Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon) and the late Alan Rickman’s ‘A Little Chaos’ as well as the Soundtrack for the popular video game ‘Boundless’ receiving critical acclaim. His music has featured on some of the most popular TV series - from Netflix’s hit ‘Bridgeton’ to HBO’s ‘The New Pope’ by Paolo Sorrentino. Brands including Balenciaga, Burberry, Dior, Ralph Lauren, Pat McGrath have all featured Gregson’s music in recent campaigns and runway shows. As a cellist, Gregson has premiered works by composers including Steve Reich, Gabriel Prokofiev, Jóhan Jóhannsson, Joby Talbot and many others. He has performed all around world, from The Royal Albert Hall in London to a jazz club in Beijing; from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to Capitol Studios in Hollywood, which was filmed and released in January 2021.
