WELCOME 2021 was quite a year! In spite of all the difficulties we were determined that our artistic principals would remain unchanged; as an outward-looking, internationally focused theatre that commits to presenting exceptional artists from across the globe. We presented the UK’s largest and longest consistently running season of international, cross disciplinary, digital work, with Coronet Inside Out, and a full Autumn/Winter programme, with work from the UK, France, Korea, Israel and Brazil. In addition, major restoration of this magnificent building was completed, culminating with the installation of a major commission from Gavin Turk on the cupola. Quite a year! For 2022 we will continue to foster the spirit of cultural collaboration which is needed more than ever. As always the work will range across theatre, dance, film, visual art, music, puppetry and poetry. We will celebrate the miracle of artistic attainment with work that includes the 100th Anniversary of T.S. Elliot’s The Waste Land, Ibsen coming from Norway, Becket coming from Ireland via France, and a Festival of work from Japan. We hope you will join us – please read on to find out more. Ballet Black returns to The Coronet Theatre following 2021’s Eightfold with a screening of their latest dance film The Waiting Game. Olivier-award winning choreographer Mthuthuzeli November contemplates the purpose of life in The Waiting Game, an exciting and energetic work infused with a dynamic soundtrack featuring the company dancers’ voices. Ballet Black is transforming the dance landscape by giving a platform to artists of Black and Asian descent as well as to new and established choreographic voices whose unexpected stories and themes come from the heart to resonate with modern audiences. The production is directed by celebrated Norwegian director Kjetil Bang Hansen, in his first production in the UK. It will have a Norwegian/British cast, and be performed in a mixture of Norwegian and English with surtitles. The production will tour Norway after its UK Premiere.

Exactly two years after originally planned, actors Stephen Dillane, Conor Lovett, and award-winning Irish company Gare St Lazare return to The Coronet Theatre with the UK premiere of How It Is (Part 2), the second standalone part of a three part staging of Beckett’s novel, following the success of Part 1 in 2018.

As with all Gare St Lazare work, this production is directed and designed by Judy Hegarty Lovett, with sound designed by their long time collaborator, composer Mel Mercier, and played by Mercier and the 14 member Irish Gamelan Orchestra.

How It Is (Part 1) saw an unnamed narrator in a landscape of mud and darkness with only a sack of tins and a tin opener, as he recounts a journey towards a fellow traveller, Pim, repeating his life as he heard it, uttered by another voice. In (Part 2), he is with Pim, and when a brief honeymoon period ends, violence seems the only way to make sense of their bizarre predicament.

For over 20 years, joint artistic directors Judy Hegarty Lovett and Conor Lovett have explored Samuel Beckett’s work, gaining an enviable reputation worldwide for their distinctive stagings of his prose and novels. Originally written in 1961 in French, How It Is (Comment c’est) was Beckett’s last full-length prose work.

Celebrated Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara returns to The Coronet Theatre with the UK premiere of Tristan and Isolde.

In Tristan and Isolde, excerpts from Wagner’s opera are edited into an original and unique dance piece. Continuously undulating music and body fill the space with a forever modulating melody arising, yet reaching nowhere, such is the impossibility of love and death.

A major figure in the dance world, Saburo Teshigawara has won international acclaim as a choreographer, director and performer for over 30 years. He was last seen at The Coronet in 2019 with his acclaimed production of The Idiot.

RACHEL LONG & STEPHANIE SY-QUIA 15 Feb
Rachel Long is a poet and founder of the Octavia Poetry Collective for Women of Colour, which is housed at the Southbank Centre, in London. Her debut collection, My Darling from the Lions, was published by Picador in the UK in 2020 and by Tin House in the US in 2021. My Darling from the Lions was shortlisted for the 2020 Forward Prize for Best First Collection, The Costa Book Award, The Rathbones Folio Prize, and the Jhalak Prize. The US edition of My Darling from the Lions was a New York Times Book Review, and named one of the 100 must-read books of 2021 by TIME.

Stephanie Sy-Quia is a poet, writer and printmaker currently based in the South of France. Her debut poetic work, Amnion, was a New Statesman Book of the Year and a Poetry Book Society Winter Recommendation. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, Granta, the TLS, the Financial Times and The White Review, among others.

HANNAH LOWE 05 Apr
Hannah Lowe is a poet, memoirist, and critic. She was named a Poetry Book Society Next Generation Poet in 2014 and won a Cholmondeley Award from the Society of Authors in 2020. Byron Wallen ‘one of the most innovative, exciting and original trumpet players alive’ (Jazzwise Magazine) curates a sensational festival of jazz at The Coronet Theatre.
The Coronet Theatre Jazz Festival begins at 7.30pm each night from Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 June 2022. Two bands every night, plus on Friday and Saturday enjoy an extra band performance and our unique underground candlelit bar open until late. Just 1 minute from the underground station in the heart of Notting Hill.
Ten different bands offer a mix of explorations of classic works by Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, innovative new compositions, and live album performances played up close and personal in the historic grandeur of The Coronet Theatre.

An electrifying encounter with the new faces of Japanese art and culture. A young generation of artists, conflating east and west, traditional and contemporary come together in the UK for the first time to present a festival that’s startlingly fresh and exhilarating.
