elcome to Bluegrass Island! We are so excited you have decided to join us for our 10th annual Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival. After such a challenging year and a half, we are looking forward to enjoying a weekend of live bluegrass music with each of you. You are about to be part of one of the premier bluegrass festivals in the country. We welcome back all who have joined us in the past, and if this is your first time with us, you are in for a wonderful weekend. The festivities begin Thursday with a SOLD OUT 2 hour cruise on the Crystal Dawn and meet & greet with your host band, Sideline. The boat will depart from the Manteo Waterfront docks next to Marshes Lighthouse at 3:30 PM on Thursday, October 20th and return at

5:30 PM. The fun continues at the FREE Shindig at the Bluegrass Island Trading Co. at 107 Budleigh St. where Sideline will take the stage at 6:00. VIP pass holders will be served dinner and all festival attendees can check in at the store to get their wristbands allowing entrance to Festival Park. Visit our store where you can purchase all your Bluegrass Island merchandise, music and more! On Friday, we will move just over the bridge to Festival Park. The day begins at 12:45 with Backline playing their unique brand of bluegrass you are sure to love. The day continues with more bluegrass favorites like Amanda Cook Band, more with host band – Sideline, The Dillards, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage followed by Scythian who will have you dancing in the aisles. Join us for the late-night jam with Sideline
behind the Tranquil House Inn and bring your instruments to play along. Saturday starts early with a friendly Cornhole Tournament. You can sign up with Sideline at their merchandise tent beginning on Thursday. The day’s music will start at 11:00 with North Carolina’s own Deeper Shade of Blue followed by the Larry Stephenson Band, Blue Highway and the Lonesome River Band. The Boograss activities and judging of the Costume and Pumpkin Carving Contests will begin at 6:00. Your carved pumpkin must be delivered to the park no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, October 22nd. This year’s IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year and New Artist of the Year, Appalachian Road Show, will take the stage at 7:45 and Sideline will close out the festival with their final set.
After each performance, we hope you will go by the band’s merchandise tents and meet these world-class musicians. While you are here this week, we invite you to shop with our very talented arts and crafts vendors surrounding the entire park. Enjoy all the great food served by some of best restaurants on the Outer Banks and beyond. So, grab your chairs and bring the ones you love to hear some mountain music by the sea. ideline is a pedigreed six-piece powerhouse whose style has set the pace in Bluegrass for over two decades. Founders Steve Dilling (banjo), guitarist Skip Cherryholmes and Jason Moore (bass) can all claim their own historical significance to the genre as members of highly awarded groups, multiple Grand Ole Opry appearances and years of national and international touring. What started as a side project for the seasoned players soon moved to the front and center and they began to record and release albums in earnest. In 2019, Sideline won

the IBMA Song Of The Year Award for their hit single, “Thunder Dan.” To listen to Sideline reminds the fan of why so many people fall in love with Bluegrass in the first place; pulse-pounding drive, songs sung from the heart, perfected timing and dynamics as well as a visceral emotion in the rendering. A band that was started as an off-season fun experiment has become a full-time dream team of players and singers, including its latest additions, Jacob Greer (guitar), Jamie Harper (fiddle), and Nick Goad (mandolin).

BACKLINE
B
ackline is a six piece band out of Spartanburg, SC. They came together in March 2016. Since then, they have hit the ground striving to fulfill their musical goals. They have a sound that is fresh, fun, different, and yet familiar at the same time. Their style of picking has proven to be modern, with just enough traditional flare that it catches the ear of the younger generation of bluegrass listeners. It can be enjoyed by the more seasoned veterans of the genre as well. The group focuses on carefully arranged music and vocal harmonies. This allows them to bring a smooth and vibrant presence to the stage. Having the ability to create their own catalog of original music, but also give traditional covers a Backline feel, the band is looking forward to leaving their musical mark wherever they can. With their roots planted in that good, ole time, mountain music soil, while being watered by today’s more contemporary grass sounds, Backline hopes to branch out and produce a music, like so many have before them, that will stand the test of time in the Bluegrass industry. riginally from Florida, now making her home in the Virginia Mountains Amanda Cook acquired a love of bluegrass from her father who played banjo throughout her childhood. In early 2007, Amanda formed bluegrass group High Cotton with her father and received her first taste of performing, fueling a fire to continue on a professional level. In 2013, determined to create her own sound, Amanda stepped out on her own and released her first solo album One Stop Along the Road. The project made it to the top 150 Roots Music Bluegrass Album Charts for 2014 and 2015 (#61 for 2015 #56 for 2014). The self-released album also brought Amanda significant regional attention and furthered the desire to grow her brand, resulting in the addition of a full touring band. In early 2017, Amanda signed with Mountain Fever Records and recorded her debut album on the

label “Deep Water.” Amanda was excited for her 2nd album project, especially that she and band member Carolyne VanLierop co-wrote the title track Amanda has created quite a loyal fan-base through her palpable delivery of a soul-wrenching song. And her light-hearted, down-to-earth style helps her create an undeniably strong connection with her audience. The Band is made up of the following musicians: Amanda Cook Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Carolyne Van Lierop on banjo and vocals, Josh Faul, upright bass and vocals, Brady Wallen on lead guitar, Troy Boone on mandolin and George Mason on fiddle. This group has played together on and off for years and they have considerable experience playing on stage at numerous venues. The Amanda Cook Band offers a unique style on a great mix of both traditional and contemporary bluegrass.

THE DILLARDS
T
he Dillards are an American bluegrass band from Salem, Missouri, popularly known for their appearance as “The Darlings” on The Andy Griffith Show. The Dillards are notable for being among the first bluegrass groups to have electrified their instruments in the mid-1960s. They are considered to be one of the pioneers of the burgeoning southern California folk rock, country rock and progressive bluegrass genres, and are known to have directly or indirectly influenced artists such as The Eagles, The Byrds and Elton John. In 1972, The Dillards joined Elton John on his first American tour. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin has also acknowledged their influence, particularly in his decision to play the mandolin. We welcome them to Bluegrass Island to share their talent and offer each of you some special Mayberry Memories.

VINCENT her family at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. While they were playing in the pouring rain to empty seats, and what they thought, no one listening — a week later they received a call from Hal Durham, general manager of the Grand Ole Opry at the time, and who just happened to be listening with his family around the corner. Mr. Durham loved what he heard and invited the Vincent family to appear on the Opry. Rhonda’s life of music evolved into a successful career in bluegrass music; after being discovered by Grand Ole Opry Star “Jim Ed Brown,” and later spending what she calls her musical college years recording for Giant Records; and learning about the music business from Nashville’s best like James Stroud, Jack McFadden, and Stan Barnett. It was her pivotal bluegrass album

honda Vincent is a firecracker of talent that powers one of the hottest bands in any genre of music today. From humble beginnings in the tiny town of Greentop, Missouri, Rhonda’s musical heritage traces back 5 generations of the Vincent family. Her dad would pick her up from school each day, and they would sing and play till dinner. After dinner, friends came over, and
“Back Home Again” that transformed Rhonda Vincent into the All American Bluegrass Girl and crowned the New Queen of Bluegrass by “The Wall Street Journal” in 2000. A multi-award winner, with a 2017 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, an Entertainer of the Year 2001, Song of the Year 2004, and unprecedented 7 consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association 2000 – 2006. Her powerful vocal style transcends the boundaries of bluegrass music, as evidenced in her collaboration with Dolly Parton on the Elton John / Bernie Taupin Tribute Project “Restoration” 2018. Her lifelong dream came true when she was invited to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry on February 28, 2020.

It was an immediate “on the job training,” as they had a TV show, radio show, and made their first recording when Rhonda was 5 years old. She picked up the mandolin at eight, the fiddle at twelve, and learned a valuable life lesson as a teenager performing with

ashington DCbased Scythian (sith-eeyin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit as well as a name in the Bluegrass/ Americana Festival Circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led The Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing,
jumping around or hoisting glasses.” For over 12 years they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1,300 shows all over the united states, Europe, Canada and as far away as Australia. Founded by brothers Alexander and Danylo Fedoryka who are first-generation sons of Ukrainian immigrants, Scythian from the start has been a search and love for the “old time, good time music” of many cultures. They were inspired by a tale told by

their 92-year-old grandmother of a roving fiddler who came into her farming village every six months or so. Once he was spotted, messengers were sent to all the outlying fields and mills and worked ceased; everyone gathered in the barn where they danced all night and danced their cares away. This spirit is what has motivated Scythian from its inception and their success as an independent band is due largely to their finding a resonance of soul amongst kindred spirits that span all ages and races. This spirit
took them from the streets to playing for the US president on St. Patrick’s Day and its the enthusiastic response they receive that

orth Carolina can once again be credited for producing great bluegrass. Hailing from just east of Charlotte, Deeper Shade of Blue includes Jason Fraley (mandolin/vocals), Troy Pope (guitar/ vocals), Frank Poindexter (dobro/vocals), Scott Burgess (bass/vocals), and
Steve Wilson (banjo). The band has been together for 21 years, has self-produced six albums, had a very successful 2018 release with “Steam,” on Mountain Fever Records, and are back in the studio wrapping up their next album now, due to release in 2021. A quick search on Facebook or YouTube will

no doubt prove why this band has been a favorite in bluegrass for so long. With their signature tight harmonies, dynamic instrumentation and energetic stage show, they’ve been lauded as one of the best touring groups in the industry and one that festivals have added to their lineup year after year.

STEPHENSON BAND
H
ighly regarded, as one of Bluegrass music’s most recognizable and finest high lead and tenor vocalist, Larry Stephenson has been headlining festivals and concerts for 30 years. He formed The Larry Stephenson Band in 1989 while living in his home state of Virginia. Larry’s crystal-clear tenor voice has provided a musical home for some of the finest sidemen in contemporary bluegrass history. Many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and RFD-TV has

made The Larry Stephenson Band a fan favorite across the US and Canada. The group is led by Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame member and 5-time Society for The Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) Male Vocalist of the year. They also inducted Stephenson into their Hall of Greats in 2018. With numerous IBMA and SPBGMA nominations and awards, Larry records on his own label, Whysper Dream Music.
BLUE HIGHWAY
n 2021, the highly-esteemed bluegrass band Blue Highway celebrates 27 years of touring, with four of the original members still intact. The band has earned a collective 28 IBMA Awards, 6 SPBGMA Awards, one Dove Award, plus three Grammy nominations. The band was nominated for IBMA’s 2020 Vocal Group of the Year and Song of the Year Awards. Blue Highway’s #1 album Original Traditional was nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Blue Highway was voted the Favorite Bluegrass Artist of All Time by the readers of Bluegrass Today in April 2016. As momentum continues to build for the quarter-century strong powerhouse band, Blue Highway is rolling on with a rich legacy and three powerhouse songwriters, instrumentalists and vocalists in Tim Stafford, Wayne Taylor, and Shawn Lane, whose harmonies soar over the dynamic banjo of Jason Burleson and the tasteful Dobro of Gary Hultman.

ince its formation decades ago, Lonesome River Band continues its reputation as one of the most respected names in bluegrass music. Five-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year, and winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, Sammy Shelor leads the group that is constantly breaking new ground in acoustic music. With two stellar lead vocalists, Jesse Smathers (guitar) and Adam Miller (mandolin), and the impressive talents of Mike Hartgrove (fiddle) and Kameron Keller (bass), the band seamlessly comes together, performing the trademark sound that fans continue to embrace.

ppalachian Road Show combines the award-winning talents of lead singer and banjoist Barry Abernathy, tenor singer and mandolinist-extraordinaire Darrell Webb, Grammy Award winning fiddler and producer Jim Van Cleve, and legendary upright bassist Todd Phillips. On guitar is Zeb Snyder, a young phenom who has taken acoustic guitar circles by storm. The group seeks to honor the music, traditions and history of the great Appalachian people and regions, as much as it does to forge its own fresh musical and entertainment trails – each endeavor infused with an authenticity and vitality borne of their Appalachian roots.
