WATER Safety Clare have paused the use of a pinger to deter Dusty the Dolphin from entering shallow waters of White Strand in Miltown Malbay. Following strong backlash and significant media attention, a public meeting took place on Monday evening regarding the use of a National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)-licensed acoustic device to discourage the lone dolphin, Dusty from entering shallow waters while training for young lifesavers aged eight to 14 was taking place. In a statement to The Clare Echo, a spokesperson for Water Safety Clare confirmed they had “decided to temporarily suspend the use of the
acoustic device (pinger) while the concerns and reservations of other stakeholders are given further consideration”. A review is now taking place. Michael Barrett was among the group of residents to air their concern with the use of the pinger which can hit 145 decibels. He said people have been part of the problem in domesticating the popular dolphin but felt other methods could be explored. “Come up with another plan or deploy another device or method like a net.
